To be honest, I don’t need care videos. I know there will always be beginners in the hobby, but I’m at the point where I just enjoy learning as I go. Watching you experience your plants day by day is how I learn!

Personally, I love realistic care videos. Like, when things go wrong. When plants don't look perfect. It helps me stay satisfied with my collection so I don't get caught up in this instagram perfection of it all. Or even when planty people lose interest in their collection for a period of time. I think it helps make it more relatable.
Thanks for the long video! Made my sick day better :)

Fern, you certainly know more than a beginner plant person! You’re kinda like a bookclub for plants. Plant people always want to “talk with” other plant people to either get ideas or confirm what they are doing is ok. I feel you’re doing great.

I love the long videos where you walk us through what you're doing and thinking! The thing about plant care videos is that plant care really differs based on where you are and what your conditions are. I really enjoy your style and feel that you do a great job of showing what plant care looks like and how you take care of your plants, rather than just talking about generic plant care. And really, you generally walk us through why you do what you do and that's how I personally learn best :). I guess I'm just saying, do what feels best for you, it's your passion for plants and what you do that keeps me coming back 💚

I like when you do videos where you're trying stuff out for the first time and take us along with you as you learn.
Care videos are difficult because it really depends on where you are and what you're environment is like so any you offer can only based on you're own experience and growing conditions.
Its nice to have a mix of chores, plant hauls and fave plants for the month.
I also like when you're real with us and let us see when things aren't going so well as well as when they're going great ❤

I would love to see themed care videos where you chose say 5 philodendron or 5 Hoya from your collection and discuss how the care between “similar” plants varies. I think it’s really helpful for both beginners and people who have been in the hobby for a while to watch a video and say “ok I know I want to get a large leafed philo, let me watch this video and see which one might be best for the conditions in my home and my care routine.” Seeing what plants other people find easy or have struggled with is really helpful. You already do this in some of your videos, but it would be fun to dig a little deeper into the details of a small number of plants at a time.
Your plant imposter syndrome is very relatable, but you have years of valuable experience to share! However feels the most fun and authentic to you will work for us 😊

I have to disagree with the comment about you not doing educational type videos anymore! I always come away from watching your videos having learned something new. You teach as you go, in a casual way, and I really like that! I actually tend to avoid videos that are strictly instructional😂 because I like the laid back/lifestyle feel while also gaining new knowledge of different plants things. ❤🤷🏼‍♀️

Something that might be interesting for us to watch can be your reflection on what you wish you knew when you were a beginner plant parent, and what you used to do that you don’t anymore (either because it doesn’t fit your routine anymore, or it doesn’t work anymore, or because you have learned something new).
    I L O V E your long-term projects videos.
Another way I learn a lot from you is when you randomly share facts about plants or plant care (as you did by explaining why you cut the roots from the pole). Those facts really stick with me and help me out.

Fern!! I think you were commenting about *my comment* to you about missing the more informative videos. 1st - in no way was it a critique (as you said)! I LOVE your channel. and I love the "showing your collection" videos. For me, a suggestion and something I would REALLY appreciate is to include (briefly) the background info, how-to's, experience, etc while talking through your various collection and chore videos - so if we're looking for more information on a specific plant, it might be easier to find it within your new videos, whatever format it happens to be. I hope this makes sense. I'm a digital editor, so time stamps with plant titles are something I would suggest - especially if you talk about that plant's needs (in your experience). It must be a lot of work and very time-consuming but making libraries of your old videos that list the plant names would help and be a reason to go back and watch, (again and again) and. drive traffic back to older videos I also don't think there's any expectation that you're the most experienced expert on the internet, but one can tell you're clearly extraordinarily successful with aroids, so it's natural to be drawn to your channel and to want to learn about how you did it. Anyway - keep it up!

I enjoy these long form, plant chore videos. It’s a realistic look into the hobby. Most care info can be found with a good google search… you could always do like a info page at some point during your videos listing how often you water this plant, soil/substrate type, fertilizer used, etc.. but honestly i enjoy these types of videos. I get my plant chores done while you do 😂

Hi Fern! So I have to say, I was never really into plant chore videos and preferred videos where I could learn more about my specific plants. If I was spending time on YT, I wanted to learn about issues I might be having etc. and it was harder to find specific type videos. I’ve watched a lot of yours, and others while repotting plants, or can’t sleep… and realized I learn a Ton from all your different videos, the knowledge is just all through out!! It is helpful just seeing your plant journey and how you’ve problem solved, or how yours have grown..and the plants I may have questions on, I usually get answers just in the mix of your videos. Keep doing what you love, yours are some of my absolute favorites to watch🪴😘 Thank you

i feel the same way about my plant knowledge. the more i know the less confident i feel and the more im just trying different stuff and constantly adjust.
plant care videos in general are difficult, even if you have had a plant for years and years. the care it needs depends so much on where you live, the climate, humidity, available light. soil, humidity and watering are super interconnected, and they correlate with the amount of light and the time of year as well. so the exact same care that worked in your home to grow a plant super healthy and big might lead to the death of that same plant in someone elses home.
i enjoy your chill content a lot. i think sharing what you have tried and what worked vs what didnt is educational as well, and it definitely gives reassurance that trial and error are part of this hobby! :)

It was in my youth, I must say, when I became keen to the wind in such a strange day. In some towering Junipers where my friend and I climbed. She was already in the sort, as it would tell of the coming foray and shared her mind.
"Look! To the edge of the street! At the corner! The wind!"
Until one afternoon when her father answered the door.
That is the moment I remember,
    my childhood ran away.
I have been affraid now forever.

I completely understand why some people miss care videos. It’s a tough balance to get as you become more advanced (and realise that most plants are relatively similar especially as we narrow down which ones we dislike caring for) but also to cater towards newbies who want specific plant info. Maybe videos about the subtle differences in similar plant varieties like how the Thai is a much thicker leaf than the albo or the veining in different anthuriums.

Your other videos are still there helping anybody who needs them but you are doing you and showing us that and I love following along on your journey with the plants. You can only make so many beginner care videos and then maybe make an updated one when you have new tips or something but it would just be basically making the same video over and over again I think your videos are really fun and perfect just the way they are right now. If it's something new you've never shared and want to show us how you do that you still do that in your videos right now it's just not completely dedicated to that and I think it's more fun watching your videos with different things within them and getting excited for the next part of the video.

I too love realistic care videos - especially coming from a fellow Canuck. 🙂 Sure, I'm in SW Ontario myself, and our climate is often different, but not as much as ya might think.
I do find there are very few really good care videos out there. Which is to say, those that give anything other than just the basic stuff I can just read about myself. Whenever I get a new plant, or maybe struggling with one, I often will run through YT and watch a few care videos; to get a different perspective, on lighting, watering, substrate, even any quirks they may have you've noticed. Your personal experience is very valuable. Maybe a series on plants you've struggled with, and what you've done to solve the issues... maybe a 'what I wish I new sooner' kinda thing.

RE: care videos - I have been watching you for years and I do have plant knowledge, but I still enjoy learning new things and I still don’t have the same knowledge you do.
When I get plants now, I find it so hard to research about them in a way I enjoy because there’s nowhere near as many care videos as there used to be. A lot of plants that are popular in the plant community at the moment don’t have as much information about them as they would have done if they were popular a few years ago.
For instance, Hoya Wilbur graves, philodendron ring of fire & paraiso verde, they’re more accessible now than they were but it’s hard to find enjoyable aesthetic content to watch about them. Even if it’s just fun facts or basic care I still enjoy that aspect of plants because I always love learning new things. You could also talk about the care of some of your best growing plants, like your Hoya princess and philo splendid!
There’s also stuff like plant feed, tools, accessories that change up all the time and I would be super interested to hear you talk about every now and then.
As my favourite plant UA-camr, it would be so amazing to me if you did make a couple of more informative videos here and there! I just generally like any content that you do though so I will watch every vid either way hehe 💗

Seconding everyone saying they don’t need/want care videos. There’s so many 101 videos online if people search for it. As someone who still watches a lot of plant channels, I skip unboxing videos and care 101 vids. I think a sustainable plant youtube channel documents how plant care looks in day to day life. I think you’ve struck that balance between lifestyle and plant care!

I love care videos. Your Hoya video from quite awhile back is what got me hooked on them and doing well with them. That being said, some of your tips for other plants haven't worked for me. What I'm trying to say is, share YOUR care tips, even if it's not "the book standard" because things work for some people and not for others. We all have different climates and things like that. I watch a variety of planty creators due to this and you all have thriving plants with different care tips and tricks. It doesn't have to be perfect, just what works for you. I am a nurse (so you probably know this as well), nothing is a one size fits all, and in my opinion, same goes for plants! Love the variety of videos, don't be so hard on yourself!! Happy holidays!!

Hello Fern, loved your video 🪴
I love the « care of » kind of video, and when you share the knowledge you learn about the needs of the plant, it’s helpfull.
I’d love a video informative about all the possibility of soil: hydro, leca, pond… the pros and cons type of.
A « back to basic » would be soo cool also: importance of light, how to propagate, etc.
Thanks for all that you do right now, i love your vidéos 😊

You’re already doing a great job, and personally I like watching you grow and learn as you go. I learn and feel more confident in my own journey when I see people that are doing it even though they may not have all the answers. I always appreciated how you are willing to put out there that you make mistakes, have bad days, and have plants that aren’t perfect. I agree with the suggestions above on playlists and pointing out things you’ve learned. Trust me, even the experts get sh*t wrong. Also, side note, I keep hoping you’ll do another silly video like maybe doing the “spill the tea” one again😊

I think your content is very helpful. I have been into plants for about a year and I learn a lot from you just by watching you. I’m not really into channels that get too sciencey. Plants are pretty and fun, I would be bummed it your channel got to serious. What a note that would be. You remind me of young Meg Ryan, your voice is very soothing and musical. Your uniqueness is what makes me look forward to your videos. You also have so many kinds of plants so you cover a lot of ground. I like learning what supplies you use too!

Also just as a separate video idea maybe a video all about moss poles where you compare different styles and types of poles and talk abt your experience with them. I feel like videos like that are really helpful and educational too. Same thing could be done with grow lights!

You have had a ton of plants for multiple years and know a bunch about how to keep them. I think that if you focused on a species that you feel like you have done really well with, you could talk about your journey with that that plant, what worked, what didn’t and what you have settled on now as your protocol to maintain that plant. I think that experienced plant keepers would enjoy hearing your experience, and would also like to comment on what worked for them with that species.

I enjoy watching your videos as I feel like we’re about the same level of knowledge but there’s some stuff that I pick up from how you do things that I try and see if it works better than what I’m currently doing. I love that you recycle and reuse. I try to do that more myself except for the cute outer pots. And yes long term planty projects that are like 6,12,18,24 months out.

the kind of plant youtube I find educational now are more experiements and their results all in one video. they take a very long time to film and edit together but those are the ones I learn the most from at this point. seeing you try different techniques, substrates, lighting, humidity, etc. with cuttings all from the same plant help me figure out what works best. especially when you're showing where the nodes are on the stem, how deep you're potting them, how high you keep the water for props... that kind of stuff

Low key, there are a LOT of care videos out there. To me, personally, I feel like...experience is more of the teacher than listening to someone else? For example, you live on the west coast of NA, in Canada, lol, and I live in Pennsylvania, on the east coast of the US at a lower latitude than you. The way you care for your plants compared to the way I do are probably super different. I like listening to you explain stuff and talk through your process and thoughts helps me to think about stuff I maybe wouldn't have otherwise thought about that I can maybe adapt? But when I first got into the hobby, I watched tons of care videos and honestly a lot of the stuff that works for other people just didn't work for me, whether because of my environment, my budget, the layout of my house, the time I do/don't have to dedicate, whatever.
That said, you are obviously doing a great job with your plants, like look at them, they are big and beautiful! So I do think you know stuff, impostor syndrome is a real thing lol. Maybe when you do a plant tour, talk about what you did to get a plant to the state it's in (for example I think ...you have a philodendron glorious? gloriosum? that is on a moss pole that was so big you had to anchor to the wall - learning how the heck you got her ot be so big and luscious would be SO cool). =)

Hi Fern, I don't miss any your video since I subscribed 2/3 years ago, and I have to say I always appreciate your contents, whether it's chores, haul, showing or even just talking. Maybe because I often can relate. It seems to me like having a plant friend to share experiences with. I don't really feel the need for more educational contents, I far more prefer practice over theory... And plus I think that you should always do what you feel doing, be yourself, because your genuineness is precious, maybe one of the main reasons people love you so much...😊

First of all thank you so much. for just being you and for sharing your plant journey with us. At the end of the day it takes courage and im sure youve recieved critisism, yet you keep going and drive yourself to be better. I am so inspired by you.
    >secondly in terms of content I would like to see, here are a few suggestions that are purely biased on what i struggle with. I would love to see:
    >videos comparing growing mediums, or mixes using basic plants like pothos so you dont have to hack up something special. also you can never really have too much pothos ... maybe use a neon one as the pop of bright yellow is a great contrast to any collection. (bias i know but im not sorry)
    >something on home tissue culture
    >how to create trackers and plant goals or achieve wish list plants in terms of alternatives or working towards leveling up to more finicky plants
    >pet safe plants
    >more information on the grow lights you use light how much fo the spectrum do they provide could you do a comparison ? would a plant in indirect sunlight be the base line of the test. i forgot the official term excuse my 2 brain cells.
    > I'd love to see more growing from seeds, tubers or rouge wet sticks... like what is it ? we dont know....
    > outdoor gardening, i know you do a little bit with herbs already and want to branch out im sure you said. (if i made that up sorry !) i would love to see the journey on that and i think alot of plants that are cute indoors can be eaten like ginger, vanilla, a bunch of rasberry and blueberry cultivars with pinky purple leaves.
thank you for attending my ted talk !

Hi Fern, did you follow the Houseplant Masterclass from Summer Rayne Oakes? That sounds like a good way to dive deep into houseplant care and gaining more knowledge. I love to read books about houseplants, these ones I really found useful: The Plant Rescuer - Sarah Gerrard Jones, The well-gardened mind - Sue Stuart Smith, Living wild - Hilton Carter (and his other books), Welcome to the jungle - Enid Offolter, Kew guide to houseplants-Kay Maguire, House plants - Mike Maunder, How to make a plant love you - Summer Rayne Oakes. But I know there is so much more…
