You could totally do a valentines themed video like your spooky repots! You could do a Valentine’s Day themed pot of some sort, even just painting it or something and then tell either a true crime story about a couple from the past, or something like that!
Fern, anytime I start kind of neglecting my plants or just not appreciating them as much as I once did, I see one of your videos of the same plants and it sparks my need to make them thrive again. If it weren't for you and all your videos of how much you love and care for all your plants so many of mine would not he here with me today. I go through terrible funds. Thank you for always sharing your plants and plant care with us. I appreciate you so very much!
Thank you so much for such a heartfelt comment 🥺 I am so happy to be able to help inspire you to care for your green babes 🌿💚 we all go through those times, so I totally know how it feels to need a little boost. Thank you so much for being here x
Who can't love cascades of hearts draping down a cabinet or from a hanging basket. So beautiful!!! Love this plant. Beauty with ease of care. The perfect plant!!! When my string of hearts was small I use to put it outside. Now with longer strands it stays indoors.
I agree with you about UA-camrs warning us to let all of our plants dry out before watering. They have us paranoid to the point that our plants are stressed. In their natural habitat they are mostly kept damp all the time from frequent rains. I have started watering mine more frequently and before they totally dry out, then I water lightly, not until it runs out the bottom. They are all doing better. Of course not cacti or succulents.
Hi Fern! I very much enjoyed this style of video, where you focus on just one plant with your own experiences, a repot, going over propagation, soil mixes etc... and then do the Q&A. I feel like I learned a ton from this, and now the SoH doesn't feel so intimidating. Adding one to my wish list!
I'm growing my variegated string of hearts in pon and it's so happy. It's in a wicking self-watering planter, so it gets consistent moisture but it's a much less wet environment than if you sat the pon directly in the reservoir. When I first started the plant from butterfly cuttings placed on top of the pon, I initially filled the reservoir right up so it covered the bottom of the pon and kept it pretty wet through to the surface. Then I put a clear plastic container over the top as a humidity dome. The inner pot is clear, so once I could see my cuttings had sent roots down into the pon, I let the reservoir drop until only the wick was in it, which is how I keep it. I just refill whenever it gets low, but there is always enough to keep the wick wet.
I have orange River. So far it is my Favorit. I Like the green leaves, it is a dark neon green. The leaves turn orange, if you give them bright indirekt light. The flowers are gorgeous. They are white and bigger compared to the regular one. Would love to send you cuttings. But i live in Germany. Someone told me it is Not allowed to send plants to canada. But let me know if it’s possible. Love your chanel 😍
I totally agree with you on the misconception of treating SOH’s like a cacti or succulents, they require more. Water than that. I have mine growing outside ((Australia) with couple of hours of morning sun,and they love it. Mine even go into seed. I also have some growing indoors under a grow light. Great information Fern. 💚🪴🌿
Such beautiful propagations fern! Some of us love the ASMR component of potting videos - perhaps try one or two without the music? The sounds of repotting are just divine ❤
Once I take cuttings I just pop them right back into the soil and they seem to root up pretty quick! Haven't had any issues doing it that way so far. Only thing I would suggest is just spraying the soil in the section you pot them into every couple of days for a few weeks, so A) you don't over water the rest of the plant and B) the new vines stay moist in order to root up.
Thank you. Great video. I have a green and variegated mixed together. I got just a few strands of the variegated and wasn't enjoying the look so mixed. Great to hear that's okay, enjoying it so much now. Took a bunch of butterfly cuts, but next time totally going for this method. Looked so much more rewarding and easier to pot.
If you haven't already, I would love to see a video on how you set up those plant shelves behind you. I'm particularly curious about the grow lights and how you attach them to the under sides of the shelves. And then it would be awesome to have a tour of the plants on those shelves :)
They’re so resilient! I had rats eat my entire very full and trailing 8” pot of string of hearts in ONE night. (Plant lives outside.) I was devastated! I ignored it for less than a year and it’s fully grown back! It’s not trailing yet, but the pot is full again.
I haven’t tried it with my string of hearts yet but I tried with my string of spades which is the same principle… to fix the baldness on top I added butterfly props all over then top layer of soil.. and waited. Was a total experiment but they all rooted just in regular humidity and light and all pushing out new vines!!! 🙌🏼 so that is the answer to balding string-of’s, I need to repot all mine so will be doing this method soon ❤ sorry for the long comment I’m just excited. And I love you and your videos!! 🤩 you’re awesome 😎
I feel like this is so helpful, thank you! There's a woman in a plant group online that I'm in who grows the most incredible string of everythings & I've always seen her respond to questions about it with "lots of light"! One day, I'll be brave enough to try again lol
You inspired me to chop my one single string of hearts vine and propagate it. Start fresh and give it a try. Doing the same with my pearls. I’ve also been watering my euphorbia, rhipsalis, and epiphyllum whenever they are dry and I’ve noticed extremely fast growth.
I water mine only like once a month and it does fantastic! But we all have different experiences so I’m sure different things work for different people. I have so much variegated SOH it’s becoming a real chore to trim and propagate. 😂 I just potted up the cuttings in my prop box from September and now I need to do it all over again lol
I used to do that too. But I tried watering more frequently and noticed that the hearts were coming in larger. Now I water more often. But you are right everyone has different ways of doing things and if it works for you then you're doing great!
I’ve had to unpot my string of hearts and put the remaining stems in water. No matter what I’ve tried for pots mine never dries out after watering so stars to drop leaves and stems. I had it potted in a cactus and succulent mix but that must’ve still been too dense. got my fingers crossed that the cuttings grow roots and the already rooted stems recover.
I’m so glad you posted this now! I’ve been needing to chop up my SOHs and wanting to make them more full so I’ve been waiting on this to do the task 😂🫶🏼
I combined my green and variegated SOH in chunky aroid mix with a self watering pot and they are doing very well. They were just cuttings so potting them together seemed like a good idea. All are loving the moist environment of the self watering wicking pot. And I never gets dry or wrinkled now. I love seeing you reworking yours. I put each stem in separate to add growth all around the pot but I am impatient in wanting fuller pots. LOL!! See you on the next video.
@@AbbiZika I would repot it anyway. It certainly won’t hurt anything and will benefit you so much. Just don’t disturb the rootball and it will be fine.
I really should give my variegated string of hearts more attention.. I never even repotted it after I got it last spring, but I definitely think it's coming up on the time where I'm going to have to 😅 she's looking a little sad the past month, like a lot of my plants are starting to.. winter sucks 😢
💚 I’ll be watching (and re-watching) and using as motivation for me to tackle a much needed repot on my SOH. 💚💚💚💚 Thank you for another lovely video, Fern. 😍
Thank you for this. I was following what the internet was telling me and treating SOH like succulents. I've killed all of mine to date. Same as SOP, I can't keep those alive either. I'll try watering with my Hoyas;)
This video demystified a lot of the process for me!I have some cuttings propagating right now and searching for care advice was just making me feel more confused. Also - the comment on balding and you talked about wrapping the string in the pot made me think of a soh combover and had me cracking up 🤣
Well what a fantastic video! I am having ok luck with my VSOH and I have done multiple props both ways.. What I need to do is NOT stress myself out untangling the strings.. 😂😲 Have a super fantastic week! Kisses to Olive 💚🐶
unfortunatly my String of Heart was covered in thripse (was my first pest and I just thought it was change of location + end of summer problems...) and it was super bold. I did many cuttings (butterfly method, checked today... Looks like many of them rotted 🥲), washed it several times and now it is in a bigger pot with a growlight right next to it. I am very happy seeing it growing again and hope the thripse leave my String of Hearts alone..... Also I wanted to say: are u sure you were looking at the right pictures when searching for orange river? I did too and I find their leaves look way more sharp and more like a triangle.
Hi Fern, love the string of hearts video! Off topic question, what is the plant on your shelf at the 5:29 mark, with the beautiful large lavender flowers? Is it some sort of aglaonema? So pretty!
Do you have any tips for hoya curtsii??? I have inr cutting and its rooting but slow. I do have a string of spade snd. Just winding it around and its growing crazy. Ty fern. I gotta check to see who needs water. Love this video. My sister is plwnning on giving her string of hearts so im excited to see what happens.
Ohh ive been waiting for this one! I got a vsoh basket in october and it has been a constant struggle, always whole strands going crispy or individual leaves getting mildew (not mealies). Moving it closer to the window helped but it's still sort of declining and almost all props have failed.
In my experience it depens on the lightning. If the string of hearts is getting lower light I would rather treat it like a cactus and if the string of hearts living in higher light I would treat it like a Aroid.
Hi Fern, I don’t know whether you or anyone else has experienced an infestation of mealy bugs on their string of hearts. My poor plant was not doing well so when I went in and had a close look it was so bad that I put it in the bin. I’m now watching this video and longing to buy another one but have become a bit paranoid about the same thing happening again. Any suggestions?
Recently purchased my first stri big hearts ! Two kinds ones pink and white and the other is green and gorgeous they are tiny but growing ! Long. I need help wanna repot and make them fuller when’s a good time !?
I have found my string of hearts to be extremely shallow rooted. Do you think that means the roots are dying from drying out, or unable to seek out water (under watering) or that the tubers hold so much water that the roots don’t feel the need to seek out water (over watering).
Your fave heart-shaped leaves video would be cool for februrary, or even a planty person gift guide
Yesss, she could add heart trellises to the gifts too!
Planty partner gift guide :p

What timing! I just saw my toddler fiddling with my silver glory 😳✂️✂️
I just found the most beautiful silver glory at my local nursery for 10 BUCKS! Best day ever!

I agree, super satisfying :) thank you for watching!!

My VSOH live in a dish of water (I live in a very dry climate) and they do great! And I don't mean in a pebble tray.
You inspired me to chop my one single string of hearts vine and propagate it. Start fresh and give it a try. Doing the same with my pearls. I’ve also been watering my euphorbia, rhipsalis, and epiphyllum whenever they are dry and I’ve noticed extremely fast growth.
Congrats-you have certainly mastered the sting of hearts challenge. Maybe I will try again keeping your tips in mind.
I just bought the perfect SOH cache pot! Has little heart rows cascading down, it came with a fake plant I'm tossing.

Awww perfect!! Thanks for watching both ☺️
Thanks for making videos!! 😊I watch just about all of them...on both channels. You're my favorite youtuber. Love you and Olive! ☺❤

I list leaves and strands when it lost the sun on top of it. Now it’s just a “bald head”. But it’s got a grow light on top of it
I water my soh regularly and more so now that I’m trying to encourage growth. I’ll have to run a strand around the top. Get the top being full again.
I’m so glad you posted this now! I’ve been needing to chop up my SOHs and wanting to make them more full so I’ve been waiting on this to do the task 😂🫶🏼

You should tap the sides of pots so the soil can fall along the sides.
I’d forgotten about running a string of hearts being pinned down to the top of the soil

Mine have formed large tubers along with a fair amount of roots, but nothing like hers. And it's really happy in its east-facing window!
Off topic but, Fern, we need to know how you get your hair to grow so fast, to look so healthy. That. Is. All.
How long are the stems that are hanging off ver the edge. I see how long the stems in the water, but how long is the other end.
I’d heard that SOH are shallow rooters. Good to know it’s not.
At 25:12, put it on slow and give yourself some ASMR :)
I want your t shirt! Where did you get it?
