I suggest that you leave your imports in superthrive+water for max 24 hours, trim the roots and then move them to perlite or moss for the rest of the acclimation. I think you’d have an easier time with it and the plants won’t have to got through developing water roots and then transitioning to a different medium 🙂
@@redlady3123yup! letting them soak up water is only to rehydrate them for a short while after shipping. I usually stick them in water for an hour or two, but I know that others like to leave them in water for up to a day-ish
when acclimating i found that using a cheap aquarium stone to aerate the roots prevents root rot and promotes root growth especially while i have them in water. you should try it!

I’ve imported soooooo many times and recommend using moistened sphagnum moss that was soaked with superthrive water. Never lost a single import that way 😋 Hope everything goes well with your mealie issue! ✨💖
It helps so much seeing someone else troubleshooting plant problems. I just discovered that a recovering plant had its painted tray rot and let water in from my grow box 🥲 such weird things can happen.
I am actually transferring my alocasias to self-watering pots and I have to tell you when I first started my plant journey that was the first type of plant I killed so I am really babying these things I have them in a greenhouse and everything So I am super nervous about these self-watering pots
Hey Fern! Your domesticum may have already unfurled, but don’t worry about not seeing variegation. They do the “Polaroid” variegation, so it should develop as the leaf hardens!
Just started to watch you again after a long break of plant videos and plant care 😅 i just been watering and not enjoying my plant lately but today i did repots and cuttings 😍 could be you or that i ordered new plants 😂🙈❤️
I literally love perlite propagations. I've never had luck with just water but when I use perlite its like a miracle. I like to make little self watering pots out of the soup containers we get from this one restaurant; literally the best experiment I've ever done.
I've been battling my first thrips infestation for a couple months now, and every time I think I've gotten rid of them, I find a single adult thrip again and feel like I'm in a losing battle. I already ended up tossing, or taking cuttings from the initial infestation area (and isolated them of course), but I'm starting to feel discouraged. I've been using beneficial bugs and I've wanted to avoid hardcore pesticides if I can. My collection is so big just the idea of spraying the whole thing down multiple times a week is so overwhelming. I finally put systemic granules on the plants I saved in the area of the initial infestation, but I just can't repot EVERYTHING. After finding a thrip yesterday on a completely different plant that's getting closer to some of my more treasured "rare" plants that I'm proud of, just feeling defeated.
Hey! If the whole nine yards of repotting is an issue, it seems fairly common to just sprinkle the granules on top of the soil and mix them in a little bit. I sprinkle the amount it says to use and then use a skewer to move the soil around at the very top until I can't see the granules anymore, which only takes like a minute or two. I'd really like to move away from granules and onto beneficials myself, but for now it's what I've got. Hang in there!
When I’m rooting in water and there seems to be no change in the roots, I find root pruning really helps to promote new root growth. Usually the roots die off anyway when coming from substrate to water, but sometimes they don’t and just stay mushy. Either way, they aren’t absorbing water so a root chop should work! ❤ Good luck! They aren’t too bad!
Same, I think pruning those old roots would help, but that is always scary too. Some of my Lithops don’t make it when I do that, but most do. Oh no Meal bugs!!!! 😢
@@LeafyConversations I could see where the lithops would struggle because they are more succulent and those roots prefer to dry out completely, usually.
Hey Fern, your videos are awesome. Have you ever thought about exploring the world of planted aquariums on your channel. I use my planted tanks water for my propagations and they do wonderful and have had roots sprout within 1 week. The Fluval Flex aquariums are great starters and super easy to use in my own experience. Shrimp tanks are the cutest
I imported from Greenspace this fall: a labisia had mealies, and I got a dischidia rattle skull that was full of ants! I wound up cutting off all the pods - I live in the southern US and the last thing I want to do is introduce invasive ants - and ultimately the plant wound up dying.
You are such a thoughtful person.. Thanks for taking us along because I'm sure its wayyyy easier to just get it done. Merry Christmas Fern.. kisses to the furbabiess. 🎄💚🐶 oh and my granddaughter is in REMISSION and she came home yesterday 💞💞💞💞 going to be an incredible Christmas here..
Sorry about the mealy bugs 😢 I would spray hydrogen peroxide or put a little in the water to prevent root rot I do with my plants I always re pot as well seems to be working good for me so far! Isopropyl alcohol 99% to get all those pests!
I’m glad you posted and update on your plant imports. Very exciting to see you blog about it. I was so happy to receive my import from Indonesia last week and honestly I was surprised how perfect they arrived. It only took four days to get to my home. I’m curious to see how your plants continue to grow. Please keep us updated.
This might be just my conditions but what I’ve learned with my plants (pothos, monstera, peperomia, raphidaphora, ZZ, hoya, snakes and aglaonemas for reference). Is that when taking cuttings/ buying cuttings I will put them in water and it doesn’t matter if it’s a week after pushing out roots or 2 months (please don’t judge I wanted to try growing stuff only in water) they won’t really do much until I transfer them into soil. I had a raphidaphora cutting in water which I thought I was gonna lose (it grew only a root slowly from one of the two nodes I had, but no growth point was going for a month), as a last ditch resort I potted it hoping the wet/dry cycle might help and it did. A week after I potted it up I saw the new growth.
This video may be the reason my Caramel marble doesn't die. I cut it into three pieces a while ago and since then almost all the roots have rotted off and out of the three cuttings there's only one leaf left. I keep panicking and moving it to different subrates because I don't see roots growing but seeing only two imports have the start of roots after two weeks and hearing you contemplate if you're being impatient made me realize I'm being SUPER impatient! So it's in a good set up now and unless it rots I don't plant to move it at all until it roots
11:26 i had mealies on my greenspace import as well, and I've never had them before and currently have no pests. They don't just spray them, these things get washed and dunked. No idea how the mealies live or if they hitch a ride in transit somehow... Either way, it was just a few and a quick spray of alcohol for rid of em. I saw 3 total and haven't seen any since (its been weeks).
I know you mentioned the perlite prop video so I am going to watch this right now but just a question: if you only fill up the water like a third or so, do the roots need to touch the water or does the perlite soak the water upwards or something? xoxo Kat🌱
i recently got a tortem and it started to yellow and it had some major root rot… cut it back and put it in perlite, so hoping for the best! all the leaves will have to go as they die off 😢
I know you’re reluctant to use heat mats, but they’re really helpful in speeding up root grow, especially in the winter. Would putting it on a timer ease your fears? I have the long thin one in my milsbo & my plants love it.
Omg, I have never seen such big mealies, maybe a different strain since it was an import? Lol. Happy holidays and brighter days. Gaining sunlight is so wonderful.
In my experience cuttings in high humidity seems like they don’t feel the need to push out roots. 😂 I noticed that two months ago on some cuttings I water propped, I put the ones with new growth coming in the humidity dome on a heat mat to help the leaves unfurl. After a few weeks they had no roots while the ones at room humidity were full of roots, they’ve since been removed from the dome and is now showing signs of roots.
All the best for the new year Fern. I’m a quiet watcher in NS who enjoys watching and listening while I’m doing my own plant chores or having a break with a big mug of herbal tea. Enjoy a happy New Year. 😊
I truly love and appreciate how you always follow up even if it’s not a “Instgram” worth Plant!! It’s refreshing to see another plant parent having normal acclimating issues … that’s why I always come recommend you and will always be a supporter ❤❤❤
Chiapense are so slow. I would just leave it as is. I moved my frosted heart cuttings all around and they died in moss. My second batch of rooted cuttings did okay in my cabinet under very high light, but it grew new roots in the top above the substrate, and I'm pretty sure the roots below the substrate are done. 🤷♀️ var. Chiapense are rough. If just leave it be, or move it into higher light with the same humidity. But that's just my story. 💚
I had 4 imports of the indonesian monstera adansonii, and always had trouble acclimating them. They’re leaves are so sensitive, and even their stem are so easy to rot when propagating. So i don’t add them in my imports anymore 😂
Love watching your videos ❤ Why not spray your plants with a mixture of alcohol and dish soap spray? Wouldn’t that work to get rid of mealies hidden in crevices?
@@rosewagner4018 Nope! But it definitely does help to give a little space. Not a silly question at all. IMO and experience, the best way to prevent pests, of any kind, is to treat prophylacticly.
May I ask the difference in using Super thrive water vs a Root stimulator? I use a liquid root stimulator I found on The zon. I root all my plants in Sphagnum moistened with this hormone and I root Hoyas in there in less than a week. Just curious your reasoning. I guess I think of super thrive as fertilizer. Still love your reasoning with these plans. 💚🌿💚
Nooo, mealies! Where do they even come from?? Anyway, I’m wondering if there’s a reason you didn’t put a Pothos cutting in with these? Maybe that would help? I hope they do well for you!
Also, I was glad you used the foliar spray! I just started using it on my perlite props, but I also spray the roots & a little (maybe not so little lol) on the perlite itself. It seems to be helping!
