What The Hell Happened To The Legend of Dragoon?

- The The Legend of Dragoon was praised for its artistic elements like lush backgrounds and detailed character models, and even given compliments for some of its more inscrutable battle system elements. The reward went far beyond just positive critical reception though, as the game would sell astoundingly well in both the US and Japan, which was extremely rare for a JRPG of any type at the time.
So given all of that, what happened? Why did this game that launch to such success and then just kind of cease to become anything else? What the hell happened to The Legend of Dragoon and where is The Legend of Dragoon 2?
I got this game as a 12 year old...20 years later I’m still waiting for a sequel...amazing memories.

Truth. The Legend of Dragoon is number 2 in my personal top 3 all-time favorite/best RPG's. Wedged between Valkyrie Profile at number 1, and Final Fantasy VIII at number 3. (I don't apologize for my love of FF8...and I never will.) But if there's one thing I've ALWAYS hated about Dragoon, it's the main character's name. Dart is a TERRIBLE name for a protagonist. And I've always wished you could change it as was the practice with JRPG's at the time.

@@kenshirosama7227 Beyond a masterpiece. It's the definition of beautiful. I've loved that game since I played it as a youngster at release. And when I played the recent PS4 release Indivisible, I was delighted to realize that the combat system was %100 a homage to VP's battle system.
If you haven't played or heard of Indivisible, you should REALLY check it out as a lover of the OG VP.

the atmosphere in this game is underrated. Not talked about at all. Loved everything about it.
Atmosphere, music, unique characters with lots of input, unique and memorable events and also towns and cities, there's something very unique about the game.

Legend of Dragoon was the game that sparked my love for JRPG's. It would be a shame to not explore Legend of Dragoon further with a remake, sequel, or prequel when there was so much rich world building in the original.

Edit: so let me clarify a few things as saying remake like FF7 might think I want a change in the story. I want them to keep the story (Maybe update some of the translation issues the original game had) and just update the graphics as one replier put it: a remaster instead of a remake and maybe have the original with updated PS1 graphics like they did with the FF8 remaster attached to it as well. hope this clarifies a few things.

A year ago my daughter( in first grade) needed to practice her reading. So I put her on LOD and had her read out loud. She loved it so much and was so enthusiastic about reading it that I found my ps4 taking a break so I could watch her and help her with the bigger words. Probably the first time in my life I was ok watching someone else play a game..

Lavitz death broke me more emotionally than Aerith's
I totally agree. Aerith's death was heavily foreshadowed but Lavitz's death was sudden and without warning. Dragoons being the ultimate warriors was repeatedly shoved down our throats until we really believed that nothing was really a threat to a dragoon other than maybe virages and dragons lore wise. We didn't know anything at all about the Dragon Buster or the Winglies. That's why I felt like it had such a heavy impact.

@@whiterabbit8243 You need to reach that head first. For the mostly melee centered enemies in TLoD, that would be kind of difficult.

It pissed me off because Albert's Additions were different so I had to re-learn them.
When I realized I missed the yellow guy's earth dragoon powers I used that as an excuse to start it over and play it all again. I didn't even hesitate. I was more than happy to stay in that world longer. It was one of those game that I invested so thoroughly into that when I finished I sat there for a good while with only one thought. Now what, where do I go from here?
I love that you can get Kongol's earth dragon gem early from the shop vendor you get the water from for the strange plant.

Legend of Dragoon and FF8 were the reason that I still love RPGs to this day.
Legend of Dragoon is one of the best role-playing games that isn't Final Fantasy and it deserves a remaster.

I don't think I've ever loved a game as much as the legend of Dragoon.
The towns... the light pouring across the scenery... the music. I fell in love with this game and still own the original.
If not a sequel, then hopefully a remake some day! This game is a legend!

It came out at the end of the PS1 life cycle so there weren't too many people that had it. Severely underrated Gem and I wish that they would remaster it
Voice acting in this game was hilarious. I remember "Gust of Wind Dance." The counteract combo was always a pain, and it was tougher than the Judgement Ring from Shadow Hearts. But I absolutely love the music especially the menu music.

I’m so glad you made this video. When I stumbled upon this game as a kid I remember thinking, “why does no one else talk about this great game?!” Fast forward a couple decades and I randomly got into a convo about it with a work colleague... which led me to this video. I spent all those years just confused as to why I felt like one of the only people I knew who thought this was one of the best RPGs I had ever played at the time, or had even played it for that matter.
I remember wanting to play this game so bad back in the day. But wasn’t ever able to play it.

@@quattrobajeena135 Because the PlayStation 3 had the PlayStation 2 chip built into it making it fully backwards compatible with PSX & PS2 games while SIE went with an entirely different architecture for the PlayStation 4 that lacked those components but made it easier to develop for in comparison to the CELL Processor fiasco
I've invented multiple identities in order to sign the petition, to get a remake of this game made, to no avail. This game was magical.
I’m so glad that a culture for this still exist. Underrated story, underrated game, and in general just overlooked. Legit could make a whole movie or damn anime series from the series.
This game was my gateway into the RPG world, and I have never regretted it :)
I still remember beating the divine dragon for the first time.
I was underleveled(and didn't exactly know you could"level up" your additions for more damage.) I farmed some lower level enemies on the mountain for hours upon hours until I was able to take the dragon down.
Such a great game and the combat system was a blast.
I've said this before and I will say it again:
I have never crowdfunded anything, I would mortgage my damn house to get this remade and push the series on.
That’s how I felt about home world 3 and it’s happening. Maybe even half life 3 will happen at this point. Sony is sitting on really good IP from PlayStation era like Tenchu stealth assassins that could use remakes.

The Legend of Dragoon community is alive and well. Many projects are going on with the game, we have upscaling, modding, translation, a new wiki with more accurate info etc.
Any mods for the inventory? That was always my biggest gripe.
@@mikematthaus6531 Yes, there are available ROM and RAM (for emulators) hacks via Dragoon Modifier for 64 inventory slots.
for an over 20 year old game the mods are severely lacking. nothing to replace the old character models, etc. meanwhile we have voice acting in the original ff7 game and almost every mod you can think of.
Sony is lacking in first party JRPGs... It would be nice if they brought back Legend of Dragoon to fill that void.

i played TLOD demo all the time when i was a little kid around 8 years old, it was about an hour long (one of the longest demos i ever seen), fast forward like a decade and a half later im now playing the full game. i got the game in all its 4-discs glory from my mom for christmas and it's definitely one of the most engaging things i've played in some time. my only regret is i didn't get this game as a little kid. it's definitely kind of helpful with that sort of seasonal/life depression cuz it puts your mind in a different world
I still remember how I got this game. I actually wasn't GOING to get it, the week before I got it, I was at Walmart with my mom and wanted Final Fantasy 7. I was told to wait a week, which I was ok with. So I go back next week with my dad, IIRC, and FF7 isn't there. I look at the other games and gradually settled on Legend of Dragoon.
I'm thankful FF7 wasn't there, I played it years later, but Legend of Dragoon holds a special place in my heart. The fact that so many people still remember it shocks me, I got used to being the only person who knew about it. Over the years though, more and more people have mentioned the game and how much they liked it.
This game may never get a sequel, but it'll never be forgotten
Before I die, I only need 2 things:
1: Get to the end of One Piece
2: Get Legend of Dragoon 2
After that, I'm good to go

Legend of Dragoon is my favorite JRPG of all time.
Not one character did i ever think was "bad" or kind of "lackluster" (granted Albert did start off as a bit jarring, but i soon grown to really like him) The story was epic, the graphics were really good, and it's one of the few PS1 games that actually look pretty good when upres! I mean i still played the game with the jaggy pixels because i'm a sucker for it, but still really cool.
The OST, OH MY GOD the music in this game is SO underrated! I rarely hear anyone praise the music in this game despite it being one of my favorite soundtracks! The battle theme, fanfare theme, town themes, boss themes - BOP! Never heard a single track that i wasn't jamming to!
And the battle system is really damn great as well! Fast and fun timing based system and i love it!
I'm not really a Final Fantasy fan, i feel it's a pretty overrated series, and Legend of Dragoon is far, FAR superior to it in my opinion.
I absolutely love this game. I still have my original copy. There was a figure line for it too. They are really rare now. I'm glad people still talk about this game.

From time to time I always wonder if we would get a remake it's a well underrated game
It took me 20 years to beat this game. First played it on PS1 in 2000, downloaded it to my PSP a few years later and forgot about it. Finally beat it last year when I had some downtime. Crazy thing is, going back to it felt like meeting an old friend. It's that memorable.
This is literally my favourite game even til today. I joined a petition for a remake even but unsuccessful lol

Man, so nostalgic. I still remember how me and my older brother defeated the black boss dragon in the 3rd disc which is immune to dragoon attacks and spells.
We were so surprised how the spell items we didn't used most of time (later in turn accumulated thru monster drops and chest openings) was the KEY to defeat such boss. Damn good times.
I ask myself this all the time. I still play it to this day and have always loved it more than Final Fantasy.
Legend of Dragoon, Lunar, Vagrant Story, and Chrono Cross are still some of the best RPGs ever made. Absolute classics.
With all the remakes coming out....for all sorts of games. If they really dont decide to capitalize on this era. They'd be stupid not to. If the fans made a enough noise about it, it would get done. Word of mouth moves faster today than ever before.

Just, Wow...The PS-X had so many great RPG's...I still remember my Wife happy crying when she completed "Guardian's Crusade"; While I played the hybrid RPG "Parasite Eve 2" literally dozens of times. I still have over 50 discs of various genre that I spin up in the PS-3 from time to time....20+ years later, those titles still stand up to many of todays showy offerings....
This game had so many memorable moments: lavitz helping at the prison, lloyd's tournament, deep conversations on the rooftops, legendary boss battles but yeah it was competeing at the time with the masterpiece that was Final Fantasy. It was a lost battle already.

An amazing game one of my absolute favorites Legend of Dragoon's story still today stands as one of my favorites and biggest inspirations, I've even been writing a fanfiction about it on my Wattpad account as well as on some other places like the small Legend of Dragoon amino that I run.

The recent announcement of GetsuFumaDen coming in 2022 has reminded me that even the most obscure franchises can come screaming out of nowhere, ready to melt all of our faces off again. We'll see what happens.
This was probably the first game that got me to care about the story rather than gameplay. As a little shaver I only enjoyed platformers and didn't care for story and this kind of gameplay, so my friend accompanied me for the ride so I can enjoy the story. I remember being so conflicted at who the Black Monster and the Moon Child was! I think I still am.
I know every game has it's flaws, but this game is almost perfect. An ever evolving combat system, great believable characters with deep connections and motivations, great graphics (for the time) and a very original and amazing world. I had a lot of fun playing it several times.
My dream is to have a modern depiction of Legend of Dragoon, Breath of Fire and Xenogears. I would get crazy over those. Maybe not even exactly remakes, maybe new stories within those worlds.
At this point I care much less about a sequel. We need a remake!
