I weant to see how you would react Shem you place you’re bare feet on the speakers while listening to voice play
Bif Naked is a great Canadian female grunge singer.
Check out "I love myself today"
Then you'l go nuts for Brody Dalle from The Distillers.
She's married to Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age, who also rocks out with Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters. Here's a particular song of hers that will tease you a little bit.
ua-cam.com/video/2KJeERXpVH8/v-deo.html
@@TheCharismaticVoice can you re react to voice play while placing you’re bare feet on the speakers please ?
Love that song!! I would love for her to react to that one @@CyFr
Violet is one of her most intense songs, both vocally and emotionally. It's one of those songs that just grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go until it's done.
Playing Your Song, which she wrote about Kurt, is another emotional song, though in a more fiery way.
Violet is my favorite song by Hole
And Doll Parts
Considering that many have spoke out about Courtney Love being an awful person, even blaming her for Kurt's untimely demise, I can't see how people can be "moved" by her songs (especially those about him)..
@@Herbalizer28 Because private drama has nothing to do with anyone in the public. Why would you take sides when you don't know the people, never even met them, don't know the circumstances and have nothing to gain. Kurt obviously liked her enough to marry her, but you know better 30 years later.
She's not talking about waking up and doing her makeup. She's talking about waking up in the makeup and clothing she went out partying in the night before. Very different vibe.
I was thinking the same thing, its about women who sleep with famous men in Hollywood to hopefully further or gain a career and the men who take advantage of that dream
That's the bridge, it's subterfuge, the rest of the song is sung from the Devil's Pov welcoming her to fame after signing away her soul (lb of flesh)
how could she misunderstand "when I wake up in my makeup"? if you put on your makeup in the morning then you didn't "wake up in" it.
@@pooki903it's the difference between those of us that lived a less than desirable life ( all the while believing it was desirable, until it wasn't) and those that were if not innocent, far less destructive on themselves. Male or female this song deeply resonates with a certain segment of a generation. Self destruction was just a consequence of the self imposed suicide that came from living as fast as we did.
Living was far more important than life.
@@pooki903I think she gets distracted by the videos.
Violet and Doll Parts are both definitely worth a listen.
Doll parts. Yesss
I agree!
Just saw this after I recommended the same. Definitely more of the Grunge vibe!
Love those songs! Malibu is another one of my faves
@@skarlottt And also Asking for it
Oh, no, no. You misunderstand the line about waking up in her makeup. She's waking up with last night's makeup on, and last night's dress on, because she passed out after a party. 🤣 I love your innocence!
Exactly! She isn't singing that she woke up early and did her makeup.
it's not innocence, it's stupidity.
@@g54b95 Right? We partied hard in the 80s and 90s. 🤣😬
@@pooki903 Get over yourself. Maybe if she didn't make the same bad choices that people like Courtney Love and I did when she was young, it wouldn't occur to her.
@@pooki903 I think you would be better to say ignorance, she isn't stupid. She had a different upbringing and as a result interprets things differently. There is nothing wrong in not knowing something and that doesn't make one dumb.
I recommend Garbage’s Stupid Girl. Shirley Manson is a badass. Their drummer, Butch Vig, produced Nevermind and several Foo Fighters albums.
I'd say Vow is Shirley at her most visceral.
Seconding this, would love to see anything by Garbage here!
Third on that. Shirley Manson is severely underrated.
Oh I just also made a separate comment suggesting Garbage! 😅 I think The World Is Not Enough is an awesome showcase for Shirley's voice.
@@jameswarner5809 What about #1 Crush.
There's a female grunge band called Veruca Salt from around that period that you may enjoy.. "Seether" and "Volcano Girl" were their signature hits.
Eight Arms To Hold You is one of the most underrated records of that time. it's incredible. so is Nina's first solo album, actually.
Seconding this, though i’d recommend the song All Hail Me
Second Veruca Salt. I'm pretty sure Volcano Girls is Nina singing the lead, but I don't remember well enough to suggest a good Louise lead for balance.
Oh hey! I recommended Veruca Salt's Seether in the comments of the Seether video! They're great!
I was going to mention thise songs as well! I'm a Chicago girl and they're definitely in my mind cannon of female led grunge.
So many great female voiced grunge/alt bands! Hole, L7, The Breeders, Babes in Toyland, The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Belly, Veruca Salt...
I was going to comment with a list, but you've already covered all the bands I would've mentioned!
I think Elizabeth would have a blast with Belly. Such high, light vocals for grunge.
Good call. The Breeders "Cannonball" would be a good warm up for E.
That Dog!
Her reaction to Babes in Toyland would definitely be fun
Must do “Violet”. I’ll give her credit for the most intense, angry, personal female hard rock song ever. It’s one of a kind.
The Live Through This album by Hole is one of the best albums of the 90s. Sadly she doesn't get the credit she deserves bc she's Courtney Love and all that implies.
10/10 album! Front to back this album is sooooo good.
Admittedly CL pre Cobain and post are two different people. I can’t say I ever liked her even though she and her band put out some good songs. She has always been a bit crass and crude
@@brasschuckles3138 the doc they did on this period / album era is very well done.
100% agreed.
Agreed!
I know people "hate" Courtney Love, but Hole is unironically a fantastic band :)
‘Violet’ should be your next Hole song
Should have been the first one. Celebrity Skin was a post-grunge release 😅
I like to joke that Billy Corgan's biggest contribution to grunge is that song being written about him, but it's also true. It's an absolute masterpiece.
@DanielKitchener33 he also wrote the main riff for Celebrity Skin haha. What can't he do??
While we're on the subject, it would be suuuuper entertaining to see Elizabeth react to Smashing Pumpkins. You thinks all those other grunge (or adjacent) singers are nasal??!! You don't know Billy!!
Softer, softest
I always interpreted "when I wake up in my makeup" as "I was so tired or drunk I didn't wash it off before falling asleep". I don't really know how common it is for women to go to sleep with their makeup on.
Yeah, I think she missed the dark subtext on most of the lyrics and video imagery
You'd think that "It's too early for that dress" would give it away.
I agree!
Yep, the demand to sell yourself out to the entertainment industry. CourLo was commenting on it with this song, giving it the figurative F-U, and dissing on those who give in to it.
Courtney deserves props for calling out Harvey Weinstein 25 years ago. She’s an interesting character for sure!
The amount of people that call out creeps and no one pays attention is wild. Johnny Rotten (Sex Pistols) here in the UK got banned from the BBC for calling out Jimmy Saville who was like Harvey but far worse
She was locked up 24 hours later.
I'm sure there was a connection.
She was really good in The People Versus Larry Flint, a definite must watch for any Love fan.
@@westonlong she was just playing herself there.
But for nothing else.
There's some great PJ Harvey from this same time period. Sheila Na Gig, Missed, Tarzan, Plants and Rags... I could name many more and she is definitely worth the listen.
Been waiting for her to discover PJ Harvey for ages, would love to see a vid on Dress by PJ or have her delve into Nick Cave too w/ their duet on
Henry Lee
So much great live material of Polly around too. Rid of Me and Taut are great live performances to name but a few.
Sheila Na Gig? That would be something!
The way PJ Harvey has intentionally changed her vocal style for different albums is fascinating too.
One of the greatest opening lyrics of all time: "Oh make me over, I'm all I wanna be. A walking study in demonology..." Courtney Love is amazing. Also a car crash. But her being amazing is part of what's made her such a car crash, and her being such a car crash is part of what's made her so amazing. The number of multi-hyphenates who've got a filmography and a discography to compare with hers are few and far between, and she's lived through (reference unintended) as much shit as her male peers, if not more, and she's still kicking. I don't think I'd want her as a friend, but I'm really glad she exists.
"train wreck." not "car crash."
@@pooki903 In this case I think car crash is the better metaphor
I agree except that I think she would be a wonderful friend to have - if youve ever seen the Pam Anderson roast, you can tell she takes her friendships seriously and I think if she is your friend, its a true friendship through thick and thin.
This is definitely a more gentle, maistream version of Courtney. For a contrast Doll Parts might be a good choice.
Listen to "Violet" or "Doll Parts" next. Much better and more grungy.
Breeders "Cannonball" would be a fascinating analysis for female grunge vocals.
Yessss! First song I thought about when she mentioned female grunge
It’s about wearing makeup and clothes from the night before. The “walk of shame”.
Also the "I'm glad I came here with your pound of flesh"
It's so obvious. I don't know how she could misunderstand this.
@@AxLWake playing it up for the husband? “What ever could she mean?, I really wouldn’t know anything about that!”…Lizzie kicked it, you can be sure!!!
Hole's songs "Violet" and "Doll Parts" would be your best intro to the band. Listen to "Violet" first.
This is the most pop Hole ever got. This is Courtney's glam period. Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins was brought in to help write on this album. If you want to go down the early 90s "grunge" women singers check out: Sleater-Kinney, Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland or maybe L7.
L7 was one of my favorite bands back then.
I was just coming here to say that if Elizabeth wanted to hear some genuinely grunge-y female vocals, she should give a listen to L7 (but not something commercial-ish like Pretend We're Dead). I'd pay good money to watch a reaction to "Shitlist", "Shove", or "Fast and Frightening". Grunge's punk roots on full display!
Add Veruca Salt to that list.
Yeah, the song Malibu sounds exactly like a Smashing Pumpkins song minus the vocals.
oh, sick, nice list. Just got into grunge and now I have more names to add to the listening list!
Mazzy Star Fade into you is pinnacle female grunge/90's. For Hole, Violet and Doll Parts are 2 great performances
L7 is another female fronted band to check out from this era. Pretend We're Dead is their biggest song
Would love to see her review "Shitlist".
Would love to watch her react to "Shit list".
Need to dive into one of the OGs, Screaming Trees, to get an even better picture of what Grunge really is. Such an underrated band.
100%
Anything mark lanegan
Celebrity Skin is Hole in their mainstream era. For an actually grunge sound you should check somo of her songs in Live Through This. I would recommend Violet, it’s a way more serious song and Courtney Love’s voice is amazing.
Love your reaction! This song is great indeed, so catchy and fun!
100%
I would say it's more to do with being post grunge era I would say it's trying to modernize
@@djasteress6068 oh, totally post grunge stuff. You can totally feel how the Celebrity Skin album is better produced and more radio friendly with the catchy hooks and more chilled vocals. Anyway, I’d say Hole and Courtney still have more of that grunge attitude than other post grunge bands of the late 90s/early 00s like Incubus, Nickelback and Sugar Ray…
It's when Billy Corgan was doing her stuff check it out he gets credit on a track or two
I always took "when I wake up in my makeup" as her going to sleep with someone so she's waking up at someone else house. That's why "it was too early for that dress", because she's wearing the dress she had on from the party the night before.
Violet or doll parts for courtney hole! Maybe some flyleaf next!
Yessss Flyleaf!!!
Yeah. Violet.
Lacey is unreal as a vocalist, such a unique style and she can pull it off live to this day which is insane for a style that sounds absolute murder on the vocal chords.
"Northern Star" is probably the most range, honesty & emotion you'll find in a peak Courtney Love performance. Can't miss if you do another Hole track
Melissa auf Der maur is awesome she played bass for hole and smashing pumpkins and her 2 solo albums are really good too.
LOVE MaDM - She covered some really good classics like Black Sabbath too
For those of us that grew up in the Montréal area there is a certain pride we have for Melissa.
I was looking for this reply. She was also interviewed by Geddy Lee about her life in his series 'Are Bass Players Human Too'.
Love her
Her unusual background vocals are so impressive!
“Miss World” or “Doll Parts” should be your next Hole listen Also try:
“Pretend That We’re Dead,” L7
“Seether,” Veruka Salt
“Not An Addict,” K’s Choice,
“I Think I’m Paranoid,” Garbage, “Cannonball,” The Breeders
“Angry Johnny,” Poe
Really should have done "Violet" - Hole first. Much better (iconic) song. Maybe next time?
No quite the opposite, she's talking about waking up in her makeup from the night before, and her evening gown. Thus the line "it's too early for that dress."
For more female grunge check out L7 - “Pretend We’re Dead” and “Andre”
Andre!!!!
It's not necessarily grunge but you should check out The Distillers! They are a female fronted punk bans. Their singer Brody Dalle has a very cool voice! I recommend City of Angels or Drain the Blood!
Finally hole! Can't wait for the video, although I would have highly preferred "Violet" or "Doll Parts", as these are more raw and though "Celebrity Skin" is a banger, it sounds rather polished and overproduced in comparison.
I agree with those recommending ‘Violet’ and ‘Doll Parts’ - to which I would add ‘Miss World’ and ‘Rock Star’. All four songs are on their best album, ‘Live Through This’, which stands up to anything else from the grunge era and crushes most of it.
Hole's bass player (Melissa Auf Der Mar) is also a very good singer. She did a great song called "Taste You" which you should definitely check out to follow on with this female grunge kick.
And Follow The Waves.
That whole album was freaking amazing. I played the hell out of it -- so many great tracks. Yet surprisingly overlooked.
@@jameswarner5809Followed The Waves is an amazing song.
And Lightning Is My Girl
Veruca Salt's Volcano Girls would be another fun female grunge song!
Shutterbug. It's less pop-ish.
You need to analyze some Veruca Salt too. Seether by Veruca Salt please?!?
or shutterbug
Yes! Veruca Salt!
Appreciate that you're giving Courtney a fair shake! I was in the trenches as a Hole fan in the 90s and the misogyny got so ugly. When she's good she is very, very good, haters and conspiracy theorists be damned! I recommend checking out any of the songs from Live Through This, it's one of the best albums of the decade.
Courtney makes the most of what shes got. I would suggest Violet or Garbage Man if you really wanna trip.
This is one of my favorite songs ever, and I never, ever, would have thought of u doing an analysis on it. Thank u and all your subscribers who gave u the idea
Would love to see you do "violet" next. So much power in that song
There's a relatively little-known grunge band called Hammerbox which had one of my favorite female vocalists of all time at the helm, Carrie Akre. I know you have to prioritize Patreon suggestions and the like and that you probably won't even see this, but I HIGHLY recommend Hammerbox's song "Simple Passing" if you want to hear some really intense and dynamic female grunge vocals.
Love Carrie's voice, I have her side project album with Mike McCready "The Rockfords" which led me to check Hammerbox...
Hadn't heard of this band before. First song I listened to has the sludgy riffs of Nirvana and Soundgarden. They've got a very accessible sound so I'm surprised they eluded greater success. This is an incredible rec- thank you!!!!
You have to hear her cover of 'Gold Dust Woman', Elizabeth!
Have to admit what an awesome cover that is!
I saw Hole on their first tour at a smallish club. A young Courtney walked on stage in a prom dress, sang a song, then took off her dress, and did the rest of the show in a slip. I suspect I wasn't the only one there completely mesmerized.
If you're going to check out Courtney Love, then definitely check out Brody Dalle of the Distillers! Same kind of super raspy voice, but in punk rock form!
City of Angels!!! ❤❤❤
DITTO!
@@EzequielMeilijHall of mirrors ;-)
And definitely Girls Talk with Garbage. Shirley+Brody = amazing combo
YES!!!
My wife at the time this CD came out, absolutely LOVED this album, and literally listened to it multiple times a day, every single day. Whenever she was getting ready to go somewhere, she had this CD blaring the entire time, and then she’d always wanted to take it with us so she could continue listening to it. I got over them pretty quickly during that time, but now since I rarely hear their music anymore, I can appreciate it again.
If you’re interested in female, fronted, grunge bands, try “ Cannonball” by a band called the breeders. Kelly Deal is the lead singer.
People keep recommending The Breeders as “grunge” I don’t get it. Love the breeders (was a big Throwing Muses and Pixies fan so had to listen!) but how are they grunge? Alt rock sure but grunge? Please explain.
I believe it was her twin sister Kim that is lead. You know, Kim, of Pixies fame.
Cannonball and Celebrity Skin remind me of my varsity days when they played alternative music in the clubs.
Pod is one of the best albums of the era.
@gonewrongagain for me it's the quintessential grunge song
Another vote for “Violet” and “Doll Parts”!
Grunge is the natural evolution of punk into mainstream music.
Grunge absolutely became mainstream, and probably the most influential alternative movement we've seen, but punk already had huge success by the late 70s. The Sex Pistols ,The Clash, etc.... As a genre, I think of true grunge music as a marriage of the sludge metal and hardcore acts in Seattle. After Nirvana, AIC, and Soundgarden exploded- "grunge" became a marketing label slapped on every alternative band.
Soundgarden were the first grunge band to be signed to a major label - I would recommend reacting to a couple songs from their first and second major label releases. I'd personally recommend Gun or Loud Love from Louder Than Love (1989) and Jesus Christ Pose or Slaves And Bulldozers from Badmotorfinger (1991). Outshined was their biggest song from Badmotorfinger but the two songs I listed are heavier and grungier.
The "live though this" CD has always been one of my favorites of Hole.
The Hole cover of Gold Dust Woman is a great listen. The harmonies with the bassist are tremendous.
Courtney is tricky as is this album. A lot of people including some great musicians hate her for her exploitative, predatory, fame seeking behaviour. It fair play to her, she became friends with michael stipe like she wanted. And Billy Corgan has said that this whole album was a nightmare to make as he had to drag her out of bed, try to sober her up and prop her up next to the mic to get her to perform. Obviously she delivered and did a great job but according to his account she had very little creative input and that he worked with the band without her. Not sure how reliable a source he is but you can hear his influence all over the writing and production of the album. And then he poached Melissa to be in smashing pumpkins.
Billy has a history of being a diva and glory-hog himself, but there has been a lot written and said about the making of this record over the years, and no one disputes that Billy either wrote or co-wrote most of the record and Courtney was barely present.
It’s pretty obvious when you listen to the songs. This album sounds like pumpkins songs and the other album sounds like nirvana songs. I think she had some help on both.
This is the neater, more media friendly version of Courtney. Try Violet or Doll Parts next.
Ha! I just posted almost the exact same comment a few minutes ago 😄

Malibu and Softer, Softest are also good choices, say what you may, but I always liked Hole despite all the Courtney hate.
Courtney's saying ' when i wake up in my make-up'...shes not putting it on...she waking up with it still on from the ngt b4...✌️
We've had Kurt and Dave on the channel, now Courtney. All we need is Billy!
If you really want to hear the "Grunge" Courtney then you have to listen to the song Violet from her album called Live Through This. Celebrity Skin was their 3rd album and definitely had more of a pop sound than the first 2 did.
If you enter the grunge journey and specifically the feminine one, you will inevitably end up navigating the waters of riot grrrl. I'm sure you will really enjoy listening to the band The Gits, Mia Zapata's voice was exceptional.
Also, you should check out Violet by Hole, it has a more grunge sound than Celebrity Skin.
I second The Gits!
I recommend both "Violet" and "Doll Parts" by Hole as well.
Hole's first album has a lot more Kurt influence in it. (EDIT: I was referring to "Live Through This" which people have pointed out is actually the second album.)
I think "when I wake up in my make up, it's too early for that dress" is her singing about partying late and passing out in her dress and in full make up.
Hole's first album was outselling Bleach when it came out and she hadn't met Kurt yet.
Hadn't met Kurt yet when first album came out, and it outsold Bleach.
I'm referring to Live Through This (which is technically the second Hole album, but it's the first major label release,..the record that put them on the map. That record came out way after her and Kurt got together. I think it came out the same month Kurt killed himself. That album seem to have some Kurt influences.
@daveco1270 I won't disagree that Kurt and Courtney were influencing each other quite a bit by the time that Live Through This came out. First album and first major label release are very different things. Even if she was a pain in the ass, Courtney was a more successful artist (album sales) than Kurt prior to meeting him. Those musical sharp edges of hers certainly seemed to soften after they met, making her music more broadly palatable. Kurt took a similar path from Bleach to Nevermind. Your suggestion seems reasonable if we are talking first major label releases.
Juliana Hatfield Three - My Sister, The Breeders - Cannonball, L7 - Shitlist or Pretend We're Dead, Belly - Dusted... All great female leads during the 90s grunge/alternative era
Your enthusiasm for music makes the world brighter🤘
Hole - Violet
L7 - Pretend We’re Dead
While I wouldn’t call her grunge I’d suggest checking out PJ Harvey too.
This as a first Hole song reaction??? Meh, I'd be all more up for "Violet", "Miss World" or even "Asking for It"
Yeah
Or Doll Parts
I would have gone for something of the first album, but now I trying to think which track would be good to show the vocals and actually be suitable for the channel 🤣
Agreed a few better songs to pick from. As a teenager in the 90's, the darker tormented songs got me through a lot of the bad times.
Big Naked - I love myself today.
Hits hard with female grunge and independence.
Love Melissa's backing vocals on this one
I wondered why didn't Elizabeth address them at all
it adds to the lightness she speaks of and contrasts with the edge in Courtney's vocals, I think
"Violet" is the intense grunge song you should really examine.
You'll love L7 and Veruca Salt. And of course you still need to discover Diamanda Galas.
I'm waiting for the doll parts reaction
We doing female 90s rock? Cannonball by The Breeders has a few techniques that might be worth talking about.
The analysis of the intro chant alone would be worth it for sure!
Violet is the Hole song you should check out if you want to get a good feel for her vocals. She also has a live performance vid of the song from Philly 1999, that kills, and shows that she was a pretty talented live performer.
I was really hoping you'd start with Violet, the jumps in vocal style are truly impressive., and it's a lot more grunge (this is a little more pop-y)
Love it. I'd be very interested in your take on Hole's earlier, grungier, masterpiece, "Violet".
Now that you're on grunge girls, I hope you get to The Gits and Mia Zapata. She was killed and that's unfortunately what she's predominately remembered for but her voice was incredible.
Agreed! I left the same comment. Truly one of the best punk bands that Seattle has seen.
"I'm Only Happy When it Rains" is a great Garbage song, vocals by the great Shirley Manson. Butch Vig on drums. He's a genius, too.
Mother Lovebone is a must if you want to go to the roots of the grunge movement. They are great
😃 Mother Love Bone 💪🏽👊🏽👍🏽
Absolutely! I'd love to hear Elizabeth's take on "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns"... or any of the songs MLB put out (Stardog Champion, Come Bite The Apple, Stargazer, etc.)
FYI - The older Hole stuff like "Violet" is more "Grunge" than this later stuff
Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm (it’s got strings 😊)
The Breeders, P.J Harvey, Babes in Toyland, Veruca Salt, and of course Garbage's incredible Shirley Manson. There is so much to mine here.
Gotta do the Pixies, the breeders, belly. There's so many to name!
Throwing Muses!
So happy to see Hole on this channel! The album, Live Through This, was so important to me growing up. From that album, I recommend Violet, Asking For It and Jennifer's Body.

100% you should go to Hole - Violet as a real intro to them. Much more raw and grunge than Celebrity Skin, which was much more mainstream pop.
That whole Riot Grrl movement was awesome! I loved hearing women genuinely rocking HARD! Before that, there were a few punk bands like The Slits, but not a lot.
Wait til you get to Kat Bjelland of Babes In Toyland, or Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill … great stuff!

Hole changed their style thru the time. Among their early hits, there are Violet (a fiery grunge song) and Doll Parts (a dark ballad), which are great as well. Thanks for that, Elizabeth.
I highly recommend reacting to Apocalyptica - 'Bittersweet' feat. Lauri Ylönen & Ville Valo
The stark contrast between Ville's and Lauri's voices is unbelievable yet they fit so well and sound beautiful together!

They're like the female Foo Fighters, in the sense that they are Grunge-y, but also kind of Pop-y at the same time.
Please Please Please do Matthew Good!! He is Canadian so you might not know him, but his voice and song writing is KILLER!!!
I love Hole!! I brought my daughter to see them when she was 15 because she was obsessed! Their albums are awesome!!
Wow, you are clearly an awesome mother!
Certainly never had the commercial success of Hole, but the band, Babes in Toyland" is a great example of female grunge.
15:20 - Billy Corgan accepts this challenge.
Exactly.😂
Or Macy Gray lol
Ironic considering Billy wrote much of this album!
