@@BJMauck he had some extramarital relations that resulted in him being a Dad again. Thus the cheekiness from plebs like me but make no mistake, I cast no aspersions against Mr. Grohl.
What makes this song great is the writing. And the double meaning behind the question the song asks. Is someone getting the best of you? The song asks, with this one phrase: is someone doing you wrong, fooling you, and breaking your heart? The phrase also asks: are you giving someone the best part of you, putting forth your best effort, and giving them all the love you have to give. It's a master class in songwriting. Saying so much with the fewest words possible. It is a masterpiece.
As someone with English as a second language I always heard the second part of what you are saying... I will try to listen for the part being fooled. Thanks for the interpretation.
Fun Fact: They almost didn't put this song on the album because they knew it was good, but it's vocally intense and Dave Grohl was worried about singing it night after night on tour. He figured out how to do it live without putting so much strain on his vocals and they put it on the album. Also, there's a reason why Prince covered this at the Superbowl, it's a great song.
A few years earlier Foo Fighters covered Darling Nikki with permission and later Prince gave them permission to perform it at the MTV VMA's. Prince praised their cover of Darling Nikki but when he played Best of Me at the Superbowl Dave Grohl said they were confused and didn't know why he did it. Prince never explicitly explained why he chose to perform the song. Prince did not ask for permission from the Foo Fighters before covering their song at the Superbowl. There is probably more to that story we will sadly never hear about.

Her research into harsh vocals is the coolest, most unique and singularly most valuable thing I’ve seen any other channel in this niche focus on. There’s literally an opportunity to change the landscape of vocal technique and instruction for generations to come.
I tend to interpret it as a play on the phrase, "getting the best of you" usually meaning something is getting the upper hand and putting you down, but turning it into a double-meaning, asking the listener if they are *giving* their best to someone. "Is someone GETTING the best of you?" - Is someone receiving the gift of your whole self? Many interpretations I'm sure, and there's certainly pain and struggle in the song, but I think that's part of the above message. How messy it is to relate and have relationship with others, but reminding us to give it all anyway and not to close off. Thanks for another fun analysis!

Foo Fighters lyrics run the gamut from inane to profound. Sometimes they nail it and I think Best of You, even though it deals in a few platitudes, truly hits on a lot of emotional beats that we all innately feel. And then the band, Dave's vocals included, speak to your core. That's why they still draw fans to big venues. I love that you can still see it even divorced of the time the song was written slash current events. RIP Taylor, dude was a monster on the drums.
I always heard "the best of you" in two contexts and your take that the second part sounded more hopeful fits with it too. The beginning is someone taking advantage of you. The back half is are you the best you can be? Are you giving someone your best? The two go hand in hand. If you're abused, you can't be your best. But once you break free and be yourself, you can also be that best version of yourself for someone deserving.
That break near the end when the instruments drop out - where, as you put it, we’re able to re-center before the final push - I call that moment “musical free-fall”. That’s what it feels like to me, at least: like the first big drop on a roller coaster, when your stomach turns upside down and you know whatever happens next will be exhilarating and terrifying all at once. The Warning has a bitter sweet relationship with the Foo Fighters. They opened for the Foo Fighters in Mexico City, which ended up, sadly, being Taylor Hawkins last performance. The 3 sisters of The Warning were deeply upset. Their concert at the Pepsi Center is one of highest energy concerts I have watched. Their drummer Paulina aka Pau, at age 22, is already at the top of the list of drummers who sing. ua-cam.com/video/EzA3SWkeYd8/v-deo.htmlsi=LMCOD1HB8OjS96Cl
Everything they've released from Pepsi Center is great (Dany's vocals on "Choke" are better than they were at the Teatro Metropolitan show) but Dust to Dust/DullKnives is an awesome choice because you get both Pau and Dany singing lead in one video.
Please react to Jeff Buckley's live performance of his song "Grace" at the BBC Late Show. This will surely start you down the Jeff Buckley rabbit hole, maybe the best rock vocalist in the 90s.
In your honor is still the best album Foo Fighters have ever put out. My favorite is the acoustic side, just amazing song writing. Especially the song Razor, my favorite.
Agreed. Over and Out and On the Mend are also up there amongst their best imo (the latter written when Taylor almost overdosed when they were touring o/s). So so sad in hindsight 😢
In Your Honor has the best Album Intro OF ALL TIME and all the songs are absolute bangers! Always choke up at "time in the sun" where Taylor sings iirc.
I highly recommend reacting to Apocalyptica - 'Bittersweet' feat. Lauri Ylönen & Ville Valo The stark contrast between Ville's and Lauri's voices is unbelievable yet they fit so well and sound beautiful together!
For the longest time, All My Life was the only Foo Fighters song I gave half a damn about (still mostly is), but this is the first time I've paid attention to this song's lyrics and meaning and it's hitting me particularly hard in my life right now.

If you want to go dark with Foo Fighters, I recommend the live version of “Razor” from the Skin & Bones orchestral tour. It starts around the 1:35 mark.
Take a look at anything from the album Wasting Lights from Foo Fighters, it was recorded ON TAPE, no modern tech or pro tools used, just pure sound! there's a documentary about it called Back and Forth, so cool!!
just wanted to say I really appreciate you admit you recognize a part of a song, some of these songs are so popular it would be quite unbelievable if you hadn't heard at least some of them. Great video as always :)
I have a really great story about this song. I went to a Foo Fighters concert in 2017. During this song, the crowd was doing the vocalization. We got to a point where the vocalizations were supposed to be over, but we kept doing it. Dave stopped the band and said "What the fuck are you doing? That's not how the song ends. I want to finish the song. Do you want to finish the song?" It was so much fun! Foo Fighter Recommendation: "Times Like These" from the Taylor Hawkins Memorial Concert, "Rescued", "No Son of Mine", "But Here We Are", "Waiting on a War", ""Long Road to Ruin", "Hey Johnny Park!", and "Saint Cecilia."
Love Foo Fighters and love Brandon Sanderson's writing! Thanks so much Elizabeth for linking 2 of my favourite things! And this song specifically and the Way of Kings!! Kaladin's journey vibes with this song in so many ways, everything he went through, to still do his best, show the best of himself (even when he didnt want to, didnt believe in himself, and didnt think he could) while never letting it all get the best of him. Im going to re read it now and play Best of You while hes speaking the First Ideal!!
It's an unfortunate reality that celebrities will rarely ever love up to the persona we assign them, especially when it's as positive as the one we've collectively given Dave Grohl. Still an absolute banger of a song.
That's why we shouldn't put any of them on a pedestal or idolize them. Paramore's Idle Worship comes to mind in situations like these. Love them for their music but understand that you don't truly know anything about these musicians or celebrities. And that's honestly fine. Let their private lives stay private.
I'm not really a fan of Foo Fighters, but this song in particular I really love. It really captures emotional pain and frustration in a very relatable way.
Eh...personal lives are personal. He didn't break any laws that I've heard of. Everything outside of that is between him and the people involved and has no impact otherwise.
OK. But there’s a lot of other Hope Sandoval vocals I hope she’d do first. Hope and the Warm Inventions are such an underrated band. Also, thanks for reminding me of her. I was trying to decide what to listen to this afternoon.
Still love Dave. Their lives are their own and unless it wasn't consentual, I don't care about his private life. It's between the parties involved and their families.
I worry about him. Taylor and his mom died within a few months of each other. I feel like he’s a bit untethered. But, none of my business. I’m not in his marriage or family.
This and "Walk" are two of my favorite Foo Fighters songs. Walk has such a brilliant buildup that takes you from tapping your fingers to bouncing around the house/car.
Awesome analysis. There's a fascinating making of this video behind the scenes you can watch on UA-cam. Apparently, the director of it was still recovering from the death of his wife so much of it is about dealing with pain and grief.
The thing I love the most about this song is that the hook is a double. Depending upon my mood and the message I need, it can mean either, "are you giving your best?" Or, "are you allowing other people to bring you down?"
By far the most underrated Foo Fighters songs. One of my all time favorite Foo Fighters songs. I lost my mother 10 years ago and this song always makes me think of her. Her and my dad were just at the end of their divorce when she died. You check out Tired Of You.
I am not a Singer person, but this music makes me want tô get a mic and scream so hard, that i think my soul would explode! And your analysis was perfect
@snezeire totally. There's a live version on UA-cam from the old john Stewart show. I think a live version of Joey where it's only her and guitar would be good too
How serendipitous is this reaction and his confession? Humans are flawed and we make bad choices, still gotta love the music. I'm sure the next FF album will have some current events fueling the lyrics. Loved how this song hit you. After hearing it 100's of times is still does. Loved the Brandon Sanderson shout out, have read almost everything and love it all.
Video 131 of requesting a return to Ne Obliviscaris. Song suggestions for potential poll, if we get to that point: Painters of the Tempest (Pt. II) Misericorde (Pt. I & II) Equus Pyrrhic Eyrie
I love how Dave always records doubles of the lead vocal and it sounds minimally processed to my ear. Makes the lead vocal sound HUGE and those who have recorded doubles know how hard it is to get them to sound close.
Dave Grohl is one of the biggest influences that got me to start playing music. While I'm nowhere near as talented as him, he brought that love and passion out of me and I'll be forever grateful. He changed my life for the better
I liked the Foo Fighters before I heard this song. They had several good songs that I liked listening to over the years. When I heard this for the first time it made me sit down and listen again. Then you start actually hearing the lyrics and I think it is one of the most beautifully written songs. The duality of the meaning of the title, the one liners that just make you really think and relate, the passion and pain in his voice, the driving instruments behind him. I fell in love with Foo Fighters after this song.
One of the best music videos of the 2000s and of all time! It's an intense emotional rollercoaster of a video and the director of the video lost his wife and i think daughter in a fire before the video was made and the director had resentment and guilt about it and the video references it along with themes of life and death. It makes me emotional every time i see it!

The Warning Army invades!!🤘🏼⚡️
That was a phenomenal performance!!
My favorite D2D and Dull Nives live preformences by far.
@andyschnell58 I forgot that was the last concert Taylor played. Rip Taylor
I have a confession to make. I cried. Tears from the song, lyrics and your connection to music x
YES! I have been listening to this album almost nonstop since seeing them in July.
Omg I was so excited when I saw this thumbnail yeeesss!! I KNEW you would absolutely DISSECT this video! 💜
I highly recommend reacting to Apocalyptica - 'Bittersweet' feat. Lauri Ylönen & Ville Valo
The stark contrast between Ville's and Lauri's voices is unbelievable yet they fit so well and sound beautiful together!
Yes please. Absolute must. Such a great song
So true!!!
I also recommend Apocalyptica and Till Lindemann performing the German version of David Bowie's Heroes - Helden.
Yes! Also Wicked Game by HIM the 1996 version
For the longest time, All My Life was the only Foo Fighters song I gave half a damn about (still mostly is), but this is the first time I've paid attention to this song's lyrics and meaning and it's hitting me particularly hard in my life right now.
I hope it’s doing so in a helpful, relatable way.
The live at Wembley version is all of this and a profound, career defining breakdown moment.
You're the BEST. Thanks Elizabeth :)
RIP Taylor
Damn it Taylor. Why’d you have to go and do that 😞
Lot of crying watching your reaction! Since I'm a hugh fan of Foo Fighters, my father used to wish me happy birthday every year with that song, that I love. Since he passed, the song does really strong sense in me, and I'm bearely able to listen it without tears in my eyes.. a truthfull hymn on struggling, sure it is... Thanks for your videos, I learn a lot from them!! Cheers!!!
This song pushed me over the finish line at the Barcelona Marathon a couple of years ago. I will remember that forever. I also liked Prince's rendition of the song at the Super Bowl.
This song is fantastic live, and there are great coverage of it on UA-cam, he has just the best audience interaction 😍
I think Elizabeth has a Foo Fighters addiction 🤔
Of course she does ❤
Hands down the best rock band for nearly 30 years ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Can't blame her
Her and millions of others. They're an incredible band!
Understandable!
Don't we all? 😂😂
Dave Grohl is simultaneously a pioneer, a master lyricist, tremendously gifted multi-instrument musician & to top it all off, he's a genuinely nice guy with a wicked sense of humor.
This is my favorite song of The Foo Fighters
Thanks for the great reaction and analyse
You should watch Prince's Superbowl performance where he includes the song in his halftime medley.
I was rewatching that performance the other day and thought she should definitely cover that.
I appreciate you sharing about your mental health experiences ❤
Two song recs: 1. Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire. 2. Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
Sisters Of Mercy, something from Floodland or Vision Thing would be great yeah, Andrew's voice so "characteristic"? if that makes sense.
Ok beyond an awesome reaction/analysis of one of rocks greatest vocalists/greatest songs you also know the fantasy GOAT Sanderson? That journey before destination part made me fall in love with this channel all over again. Can't wait for the results of your "harsh/extreme" vocal study, thank you so much for being the individual to get the ball rolling on that research. I hope you know how loved and appreciated you are by your community
How about some Tragically Hip? 🇨🇦
Great Choice!!! RIP Gord Downie! My personal choice for the 1st reaction would be Grace, Too, but Bobcaygeon would also be a great start to the Hip!!!
"Courage" is a poignant track sung by a unique talent, but those who are 'guiding' E are devoid of the necessary 90's wisdom/palate to make the assoc suggestion. ua-cam.com/video/FhpezwGtDEg/v-deo.html
Is that about pertrochanteric fractures?
yes, please! So good!
@@blakerbnsn was just thinking about making a recommendation for the Hip while driving on Saturday night; so many options!! Blow at High Dough would be awesome, so would 50 mission cap or New Orleans is Sinking or Nautical Disaster
Catharsis. I think that's what makes these relatable songs so satisfying to listen to.
Good Statement, Miss E. 👍 Let's stick with the music and #letsgettoit
it is truly relatable. this song along with the visuals of the video, gets me everytime.
Well, who hasn't a Foo Fighters addiction?😇
I love the Foo Fighters. Their music speaks to life.
I am a amateur musician at best and I learn so much from your videos. Not just about vocals but music production and song creation. I am currently trying to add some distortion to my vocals and I am learning to play with it through your videos. I am a supporter of your research and I am so looking forward to learning more. TYhanks for your hard work.

Thank you for talking about depression. It's something I've lived with since I was a preteen and it's so difficult.

If you want to go dark with Foo Fighters, I recommend the live version of “Razor” from the Skin & Bones orchestral tour. It starts around the 1:35 mark.
I'm not the charismatic voice but I'll check it out anyways
Not only is this a great song.... from an editor's perspective, there is so much material and edits in the video. One of my favorites.
Take a look at anything from the album Wasting Lights from Foo Fighters, it was recorded ON TAPE, no modern tech or pro tools used, just pure sound! there's a documentary about it called Back and Forth, so cool!!
Watching your videos makes me feel so vulnerable. Thank you!
The Lizzy Hale cover of this is pretty damn good too
just wanted to say I really appreciate you admit you recognize a part of a song, some of these songs are so popular it would be quite unbelievable if you hadn't heard at least some of them. Great video as always :)
Gimme Shelter by the Stones, please.
Up
I know Elizabeth loves live versions, but this one has to be the original off of Let it Bleed featuring backing vocals by Merry Clayton.
@@dennishawks3836 agreed!
My favorite Foo Fighters song! They have a lot of great ones but there's something about this one that really grabs me.
Oof, unfortunate timing. Great song.
Eh...personal lives are personal. He didn't break any laws that I've heard of. Everything outside of that is between him and the people involved and has no impact otherwise.
Speaking of, Fortunate Son. But really, its just the universe perking its ears snd dropping it on all..
This song has always been in my marathon training play list. I love this song! Powerful!
Check out Mazzy star - Fade in to you
OK. But there’s a lot of other Hope Sandoval vocals I hope she’d do first. Hope and the Warm Inventions are such an underrated band.
Also, thanks for reminding me of her. I was trying to decide what to listen to this afternoon.
I love your Foo Fighters reviews! My favorites to watch for sure.
Still love Dave. Their lives are their own and unless it wasn't consentual, I don't care about his private life. It's between the parties involved and their families.
I agree with you, their personal lives are none of my business, as long as they're consenting adults. Moving along, I frickin love this song.
What about his wife and kids?
Their business, not ours.
@@iainhenderson4385 It is none of your business and does not affect you in any way
I worry about him.
He really do be confessin'
Awesome analysis. There's a fascinating making of this video behind the scenes you can watch on UA-cam. Apparently, the director of it was still recovering from the death of his wife so much of it is about dealing with pain and grief.
The thing I love the most about this song is that the hook is a double. Depending upon my mood and the message I need, it can mean either, "are you giving your best?" Or, "are you allowing other people to bring you down?"
It's so much fun listening to your breakdown. Awesome awesome awesome songs
By far the most underrated Foo Fighters songs. One of my all time favorite Foo Fighters songs. I lost my mother 10 years ago and this song always makes me think of her. Her and my dad were just at the end of their divorce when she died.
You check out Tired Of You.
Underrated? It's consistently listed as one of their best songs, hardly underrated.
🙄 Geez sorry.
I am not a Singer person, but this music makes me want tô get a mic and scream so hard, that i think my soul would explode!
And your analysis was perfect
Couple 90s hits, LA band, amazing singer: CONCRETE BLONDE. You'll love them
Yes!! Johnette Napolitano’s voice is amazing!
Heal It Up is a great intro. Not my fave, but I think a good song to begin with.
@snezeire totally. There's a live version on UA-cam from the old john Stewart show. I think a live version of Joey where it's only her and guitar would be good too
You're really getting how this type of music can lift you.
I need to see Kai Tangata by Alien Weaponry
How serendipitous is this reaction and his confession? Humans are flawed and we make bad choices, still gotta love the music. I'm sure the next FF album will have some current events fueling the lyrics. Loved how this song hit you. After hearing it 100's of times is still does. Loved the Brandon Sanderson shout out, have read almost everything and love it all.
Having just seen breaking Benjamin live here’s to hoping you check them out.

So Cold
Red Cold River or really any of their songs
Red cold river!!!!!!!!
All right! Stormlight reference! I always love it when my fandoms cross over like that.
Video 131 of requesting a return to Ne Obliviscaris.
Song suggestions for potential poll, if we get to that point:
Painters of the Tempest (Pt. II)
Misericorde (Pt. I & II)
Equus
Pyrrhic
Eyrie
I love how Dave always records doubles of the lead vocal and it sounds minimally processed to my ear. Makes the lead vocal sound HUGE and those who have recorded doubles know how hard it is to get them to sound close.
“Musical Blue Balls” Best comment by Elizabeth yet! LOL
Dave Grohl is one of the biggest influences that got me to start playing music. While I'm nowhere near as talented as him, he brought that love and passion out of me and I'll be forever grateful. He changed my life for the better
reacting to this song at this moment in life Dave was the most brilliant strategy I've ever seen
Elizabeth i love your videos you make and I want you to carry on ❣️
