Wow, that is the tractor I drove growing up working on the farm down the road that was a stop on my paper route. Spent 4 years working after school and summers when I finished pedaling 12 miles to deliver 65 newspapers every day. That tractor was 20 years old in the 70's and was like brand new. All the equipment was well maintained. many days spent wire brushing/cleaning attachments, and everything was painted when needed and/or rebuilt. Baled a lot of hay and shoveled tons of manure with the bucket loader out from behind the barn. The worst was loading it in the manure spreader and driving back and forth across the fields spreading it. Great upload! thank you for unlocking those memories. and thank you for preserving history and sharing. :)
Beautiful! You can be proud of that. My dad passed in 2005. I have his 57 640 and just recently got it running. Hasn't ran since before 2005. Needless to say I'm very happy. It is rough but the plan is to get it looking close to what it looked like when dad bought it. Where did you get the fender's and the dog leg? Right side dog leg is rusted out at the bottom. Left side looks pretty good. Fender's are in terrible shape. They definitely need replaced.
Hello I wish I could help more with your question about the paint colors as I know how frustrating it can be to find the right colors when restoring. I matched the red and the gray as close as I could to clean spots on the original paint using the paint bench at my automotive shop, so essentially custom mixed colors unfortunately.
Jim - beautiful restoration, i'm in the process of restoring my 1957 model 640 and if all goes to plan, should look nearly identical to yours. My question for you is regarding the paint, not with color, but system - what paint system did you use for your primer, base, and clear? I was planning on stripping all paint, soaking with phosphoric acid to neutralize any rust, and go from there. Did you follow a similar process? Just wondering which system and products you used (i.e. PPG, Martin Senour, etc, did you use an epoxy primer, etching, etc)...thank you!
The running gear of the tractor was wire wheeled down until it was bare and then epoxy primed, any sheet metal that was able to be re used was sand blasted, body work performed primed sanded and painted, I believe at the time we were using RM/Diamont for the color and the clear coat may have been USC brand, probably a 2:1 high solids. We now use PPG deltron in the shop but I have no issues with either brand. Just be sure that with whatever process you use once you have everything in bare metal (especially if it is humid) get the epoxy primer on asap to avoid any issues with rust reforming and causing problems later on
After reading this I did check out the tractor and believe it or not both headlights housings have this drain hole on both the top and bottom, it is strange that they were manufactured that way
I purchased them off eBay they are stickers that go over the raised lettering but originally they would have been painted on, haven’t found somebody yet to paint them but hopefully soon

If the farm you worked on was in highland ny than this would indeed be the tractor, would love to hear more about it
Really nice old tractor! Makes me want to restore mine!
Absolutely beautiful restoration! Not too many people use a 2 stage paint on the cast. 10 years later still looks perfect.
This how I want mine to look. Awesome tractor!
That’s one nice looking rebuild.
Wow! Really nice job!

I believe Steiner tractor should have all the parts you are looking for
Beautiful tractor! Where did you get the decals under the hood?
Gorgeous! Just found a 650 running, 12v, partially restored for 2850.00. Seems like decent price?
Could you give some info on the paint please? Color code, etc would be great! I love the darker grey than is on my 850. Great Job! Thx!

What kind of tires did you put on the front ?
I think your headlights are mounted backwards side to side.... drain hole goes on the bottom.....???

@@jimsledstorm Well I'll be darned...... I never noticed that on mine and it's long gone now.
👌👌👌👌👌
Where did you get the stencils for the Model 640 on the hood?
I purchased them off eBay they are stickers that go over the raised lettering but originally they would have been painted on, haven’t found somebody yet to paint them but hopefully soon
Nobody likes the irresponsible pet owner that allows their dogs to bark and thus disturb the neighborhood, and definitely not on a video.
Might be a good story if I could hear you.
