#616Entertainment loved you're review. I do think that this rendition of the movie is for hardcore fans, the person I watched this with, is only a casual played & she couldn't get into the movie. All I was getting is who's that, who's this, what do they do, are they good or bad. I can see a lot of casual MK fans not have a clue. Plus you couldn't have said it any better, what the hell did they do to Goro, was that Cole's first real fight, after losing to a no body/Average Joe & a couple of warm up's with Kano & Kung Lao. What a waste they could have had a list of recognisable characters. Yet no, they went & used Goro undefeated for 500 years & a no body beats him up in 5 minutes ( I'm sure they had the in game timer on). Thank you for a great review didn't know you did the movie reviews but great.
@@TheWonkster You don't have to make him a generic human ninja. Give him scaley skin, reptile eyes, a more reptilian face, and then still give him a bad-ass ninja suit to fight in. It's not that difficult. He can keep all of his powers like literally everyone else. lol
I didn't hate Cole's family, but I think they *should* have killed them off, and that should have been how he got his Katra (idk if I spelled that right). Seeing his family die, with a close up of his eyes flashing the same color as Scorpions for a moment, THEN the armor and bladed tonfa's would have been so much better for that. I don't really understand the blatant hate that 616 has for the family, but they really should have served as that plot device for Cole getting his powers. That also would have been another way to link Cole to Scoprion as well, I think.

Sub Zero was the highlight of the film besides Kung Lao and Kano. Liu Kang better be The Chosen One in the next tournament so he can avenge Kung Lao from Shang Tsung. Can't overdue Cole fr
Kung Lao was cool but underused. Was his arkana the hat or the teleport he used in the beginning? If both, maybe have another scene where he teleports. I wonder what the story is with the hat though... Well, if there is a sequel, we'll probably never know, unless he comes back as a zombie.
I legit could not stop laughing at the "HES ABOUT TO GET HIS SOUL SUCKED" line. It was so terrible and that whole sequence was the best unintentional comedy ever. Liu Kang and the heroes just stand there going "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" while Lao dies. They could have prevented that shit.
Yo 616....goro part should've been Baraka's part...think about it....the horror scene was perfect for baraka and goro should've been saved for the first tournament anyways
I definitely enjoyed the movie. While I'm disappointed some characters got killed up pretty early in this story arc, Kung Lao, It was still pretty solid. And I kinda like the Cole Young character, maybe we can see him as DLC in MK11. I mean, why not?
Nobody will replace Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung ever...also, I didn’t like the cuts at every 0.5 seconds during the fight scenes, and I hope, in all honesty, that Cole Young wont be the new Rey Skywalker
I think Alice from Resident Evil is a more accurate counterpart to coles unnecessary addition and stealing the spotlight from characters of beloved franchises
I actually enjoyed Christopher Lambert. He brought a really nice element of sas to the thunder god. Then again, I've always loved Lambert. Connor McLeod for the win!!
MK movie from 1995 resides in a special place in my heart. My father sent me a copy of it from Pakistan to the UK as a surprise on VHS. I was 7 years old at the time, having played MK (I know well underage) it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. And having the characters come to life on screen was just an ever lasting memory that will never be forgotten. Not going to mention Annihilation but fun watch. Fast forward nearly 25 years and the anticipation for this films was overwhelming. Things they got wrong - Shang Tsung but then again, no one will ever top Cary...ever! WTF was up with Raiden in this? Came across as a total douche, no soul to his character. Goro in a cabin in the woods....what? Could go on and on about characters they got wrong. Setting for fights had no imagination. Apart from a couple of fights, there was no emphasis on a 1 on 1 fight like they had in 1995. You can't build on a characters fighting style or arc when you have like 5 or 6 going on at the same time. No need for Cole and Co. Things they got right - Fatalities! Blood and gore! Kano's, Kung Lao, and Scorpion. At least they did this well. It solidified itself in the lore of MK that it is R rated for a reason. The opening 10mins set the bar so high that anything after it would feel like it's come up short. Kano stole every scene Scorpion and Sub Zero, arguably most familiar characters from the franchise done right. Outfits, actors and SFX, pretty much sport on. I could go on but this Full Review has pretty much got it spot on. It had some elements that were missing from 1995, but it had a lot of unnecessary sh*t. End of the day a fun watch but not a great movie. Not saying I wouldn't mind a 2nd installment but they got a lot to improve on.

I saw this movie yesterday and I absolutely loved it! The amount of references and love shown to the games and the fact that this movie was Rated R made it great. I can’t wait to own this on Blu-Ray when it comes out.
I got exactly what I hoped for out of a MK movie. It seems everyone wanted it to be like Oscar worthy or something. It's about interdimensional space ninjas fighting in a mystical tournament for world domination. It has badass fight choreography, lots of gore, some DECENT acting and special effects. What more can you ask for out of MK?
I agree! I think people set their expectations WAYYYY too high and that’s why they’re so disappointed. Sure the story is choppy but everything else was all cheesy fun!
I didn't need an Oscar worthy film. I just wasn't looking for Goro beating up a truck on a farmhouse or Sub-Zero dropping ice on a hot dog stand. The lack of imagination was stunning. I'm glad you liked it as much as you did, though.
Yeah but the main issue was the story sucked, all the characters are underdeveloped and they totally screwed Goru. Still had fun with the movie but I was just unhappy at the end

Dan said it best- “real fans of Mk will be dissapointed with this movie and the casual fans who don’t know MK will be confused on wtf is happening”. So it fails for both audiences.
Dude, I felt like I was hearing myself listening to this review. I wholeheartedly agree with basically all your guys’ points. I too hated this movie once the credits rolled on my first viewing, but then I went back and rewatched it, and yeah, without any expectations just trying to enjoy the parts I did like I had a lot more fun with it. It’s still nowhere near the ‘95 original, but I’ll root for it if it means we’ll get more MK movies. Worst thing would be for the movie franchise to go dormant for 25 years again. Maybe with a better writer and director a sequel can right this ship, cause there are some good bones to work with in this movie, they’re just buried under really bad writing.
I really enjoyed this film. I had low expectations after seeing the original films, but this was far better than I expected. It was very fun and entertaining.
I went into this with a few standards. It was a B movie Low expectations because of the past. Was quite surprised, they did a lot of things well. They focused on the combat first. Sub zero kicked ass. They didn't focus on Cole too much, they didn't try to make you care about him too much, him being attached to Scorpion helped the characters relevance. It's not an absolute masterpiece, it was still very fun to watch. Go in as an MK gameplay fan & you'll have fun. The story wasn't a huge priority. They focused on fun & they did achieve that.

You're expecting an elaborate story from a B film, and not only a B film, but a Mortal Kombat B film. Story in Mortal Kombat is almost as irrelevant as a story in a Doom game. It's their, but don't expect it to take center stage. You're expectations we're too high & in the wrong place "kiddo"
@T.R.U. Louisianimal it's funny you think age= superiority and intelligence, you definitely don't act your age. You aren't that much older than me So let's put this into perspective. Terminator 2 came out in 1991, it was the most expensive movie at the time to make, it cost 100 millionish if I remember. Annihilation came out in 97, budget of 50 million which was still pretty high for a film at the time, 6 years newer. Played & looked substantially worse than T2. This reboot had a budget less than Annihilation did in our current economy. So that equals quite a bit less. Movies costing 200 million to make now is pretty standard. Oh and you're shilling for Annihilation.. LUL
For a sequel, I would love if they brought in all of the Lin Qui characters, or at least setup for them for the third. Also they have to find a way to bring Kano back, he was the best character in this movie.
@@616Entertainment Given that Cyrax and Sektor will most likely be already converted in film 2, and we're getting Kuai-Liang as a confirmed protagonist I would love to see Kuai-Liang be accompanied by his 2 best friends Tomas aka Human Smoke and Human Hydro. Especially a human version of Hydro as the only 2 times the American Aquakinetic member of the Lin-Kuei is seen in MK material he's a jobber first in one of the MK2 comics where he's jobbed out to Scorpion, and then in MK: Legacy S1 where it's revealed he got turned into a Cyber Ninja and then proceeded to get jobbed out to Cyrax and Sektor. I actually want to see Hydro in his human form actually utilizing his martial-arts skills, Lin-Kuei training, and Aquakinetic powers to kick ass not be jobbed out to a villain.

I enjoyed the movie some of my favorite things are Reptile and the fatalities did you hear or read that The Miz could play Johnny Cage in the sequel and Ed Boon gave his support to The Miz
I personally loved it because the references of the game. Like seeing Delia the mother of Taven in the hyroglypys. That little bit made me a classic fan so happy

Ya the more I think about their direction of that, the more I get a headache lol. Ugh, I wish some of us fans worked on the movie to make sure these peeps didn’t f up the movie too much!
I had very low expectations for this. When I watched it the first time at midnight when it released, I had some issues with it (Cole Young was unnecessary, Goro and Mileena got jobbed out, music was very bland, didn’t like Raiden), overall I was very surprised, impressed, and relieved with this movie. I gave it a solid 7/10 in my head. But the next day I thought that maybe I was just too excited (HUGE MK fan). After reading some tweets and watching some reviews, I started feeling like the movie wasn’t that good after all and I was just too excited about it. Watched it the 2nd time again tonight and nope, this movie is still very enjoyable and as an MK fan I truly believe that they tried hard to make it good. Plus my dad who couldn’t care less about MK really enjoyed it as well. Still a solid 7/10 for me.

From what I've heard, Apart from the the theatrical release, Was a 5 hour long movie with many scenes and world exploration, interactions with different side characters that connects the whole story. Like an Open World thing. I do hope the sequel will be more bigger, and more improvements for the characterization and personality side. Overall, I think this movie is a good build-up for the sequel.
Scorpion was tarnished by Cole. We don't know why he was trapped in hell but suddenly appears in the third act in the Gym. "Get over here!" was strange coming from a guy from ancient Japan that has no background in English and continues to speak Japanese later. I don't know how they could have explained it?
I enjoyed the movie, it could've been way better, but for what we could've got, I guess we made out ok. I feel Reiko was the character done the least justice. He's much more than a guy who screams and swings a hammer. I'm not worried about all the characters who died, no one is really dead in mk. Going to watch this again. I hope it does well, I would like to see more. I appreciate your opinion, it's much better than some of the UA-cam critics on this.

Tired of the low standards people have. Clapping like kids " yay they said the thing from the game yaaaaay" um ok sprinkling cheap fan service just for a cheap pop is lazy. Its 2021 we needed a better director and better writers. MK can and should be a serious franchise. Also COLE YOUNG was a joke.
I'm glad I'm not alone on thinking the movie wasn't what it should have been. Your points on Annihilation even being better in some respects is spot on. I think the Cyrax fight in that movie is infinitely better than anything in this new movie. I hated Cole, too. Still can't believe they cut Johnny Cage out just because he was a white character and replaced him with boring Cole. I hope you get around to doing videos like this on the original MK and Annihilation!

Of all the reviews I've seen, I need someone who truly *cares* about MK because a lot of folks out there just aren't getting why these problems are so frustrating. But this review is more than I ever could have hoped for. I knew Ian would not let me down! All excellent criticisms that I was totally pulling my hair out over. Goro looked better in 1995?! You definitely need your eyes checked. Lol He looked SOOOOO much better in this film. I thought the Goro fight was awesome and Cole DOES use the uppercut on him. I think people's expectations were just way too high for this film. That's always a recipe for disappointment.
I think Sub Zero being a cryomancer basically explains him being present in the future. What do people in sci-fi films do when they are travelling long distances in space? They enter cryosleep. Captain America was frozen alive in ice for decades in the MCU.

Isn't it a thing in the MK mythology that champions of mortal kombat are granted immortality as long as they are champion? Imagine instead of Goro this MK universe's outworld champion was Bi Han. 🤔
@@616Entertainment I think this is the answer, and I really think with the deaths we got, we are going to see Shang Tsung resurrect them as puppets or slaves.
I believe the reason why Sub-Zero is still alive is because whatever fighters are on the winning side of the tournament they get an expanded lifespan in order to participate in the next tournament. And seeing as how Outworld won 9 straight tourneys it makes sense that he's still alive.
I think Reptile in the original game was just a palette swap bonus. But if he were a full character to begin with, I fully believe it would have been a lizard man as we got in Deadly Alliance. Baraka, Reptile, Motaro, Goro, etc are all monster characters.
I believe this version of shang tsung said something along the lines of"we didn't win none tournaments by following the rules". So I guess were suppose to assume outworld kills off most of the champions before every tournament.
I’ve seen so much allowance for this movie from people... why should we accept this dung heap of a movie, especially after all that hype? And one of the main points these apologists make when calling us haters is that this was just a setup for a sequel... really? Don’t movies have to be good first? What kind of logic is this? The first screen proves how great of a live action adaptation we could’ve had for MK, and the rest of the movie was pure shit, excluding the Jax / subzero fight scene, that was pretty cool. Cole was a forgettable waste. Every other character besides subzero and scorpion and maybe Jax completely sucked. I’m not a pessimist or a negative person. This movie just sucked. What a let down. I could’ve written a better script... seriously. We need a Snyder cut type of redux... drop everything after the first scene, recast everyone else but jax (and maybe Kano, but redo the look for fucks sake) and go straight to present day Los Angeles. Johnny cage is fighting some badass looking ninja (throwback to the 95 movie intro to Johnny) and this very serious fight is actually just a movie scene. Johnny drama queens it to his trailer where he meets a Young Chinese man who speaks broken English, but wearing what a provincial Chinese tourist would wear to visit americas Hollywood. It’s liu kang. What are you doing in my trailer! Almost a fight, we have an intense moment, but liu hands him a scroll with the SYMBOL on it. I’m looking for the best fighters to represent us in a tournament. “Who’s us? What’s this tournament?” Liu says, “If you’ve got the balls.” Whatever. Snappier dialogue. You get the idea. This is off the top of my head. Clean it up a bit. liu kang leaves. Focus on the dragon symbol again, then cut to a big gold dragon statue surrounded by ruin. We are in outworld. Throw up a big “outworld” in white letters”. Set the stage of this alternate dimension. Throw some Easter eggs in (like a man on fire standing on a bridge in the background and then never explain it), show the hellscape of outworld a little bit. Then we see the silhouette of an AGED Shang Tsung on a throne, atop a mountain with lightening and that deep purple and red sky. and a warrior approaches him. We see red boots stepping up some ancient stone steps in the foreground to approach a fuzzy image of an aged Shang tsung in the background. It’s Ermac . He looks WICKED. He, in some vague conversation with Tsung, eludes to the tournament and it’s implications and how he wants to represent outworld and claim victory , but we get the distinct notion from him that his motivations for doing so are different than Shang tsung. Maybe its reiko, maybe, while showing a reverence for Shang tsung, they elude to shao khan not by name but by stating, “you’d better have this under control, no more chances, or the next time you see me will be your last.” You get the idea. Thus we have subtly set up the exposition for the tournament while letting the audience know there are all kinds of factions, alliances and tenuous relationships among these other worldly beings. Shang tsung says fuck you, I’ve got the Lin kuei and the shirai ryu under my control. I will destroy earth realms champions with their own warriors. The two step up, first time we see them both in their full gear. Scorpion and subzero one on either side, not looking at each other, but you can feel the tension between them. They are silent, like zombies almost. Tsung eludes to the ancient rivalries of earths warriors tearing earth apart, since they have no leadership/ no one controlling them (foreshadowing raidens apathy / ineffectuality and the elder gods too, when he shows up later). This is how I’ve won us nine straight victories, by tearing them apart from the inside. Their souls belong to me now, and if you dare to speak to me again this way, I will own all of the souls that inhabit your worthless shell, ermac (again... whatever) Shang tsung says, and should all else fail, outworlds victory is assured by our reigning champion. You can run back and tell the Emporer that earthrealm will soon be his for the taking, and I will have won my prize. Blah blah blah. Cut back to earth. Liu kang, Johnny cage, Sonya (played by a better actress with real martial arts abilities) join liu kang, do the whole boat thing again but better because that shit was awesome in 95, they need help bc liu isn’t enough to lead them. They need Rayden, raidens a dick, but he shows up to save them when Shang tsung sets them up to get their asses kicked before the tournament begins, they’ve convinced him to help. Scorpion and subzero wind up teaming up to fight the entire earth realm team and they’re kicking like four or five peoples asses, wind up fighting each other, whatever. You can do all kinds of cool shit. Keep the character list a little low for the first movie to build up some investment and make it manageable and have some kick ass fight scenes with lots of blood. Kill Kano off. Make it awesome. Etc. So much they could have done that would’ve been better. It didn’t even feel like Mortal Kombat.
Watched it twice already. My thoughts on it haven't swayed. It is its own universe separate from the game universe. If I wanted the exact same thing as the games. If play the games. It's a fresh take on the lore. I only watched the first trailer n nothing else. So I was happy with what I saw. And Cole is the Krypt guy in MK11

I'll speak out for the MK fans who might not want to deal with the accompanying derision and say I thought the movie was terrible. Aside from the violence being on par with the games, everything else was trash. I don't care that they changed so much from the games, but I care that they changed things so much for the worse. The MK game story is already convoluted and crazy (in a good way - prefect for the video games), but the movie didn't translate that well and instead turned out incoherent, fraught with plot holes and inconsistencies that couldn't be ignored. I can't believe the '95 movie actually did it best now that we have this trainwreck to compare it to. Fan service isn't enough to say that this movie was what MK fans deserved. I look forward to watching your video to see what you thought. (Isn't it funny how there wasn't even a "Mortal Kombat" tournament in this movie titled "Mortal Kombat?")
Great review, 100%! Me honestly, 1 out of 10, I give this movie a 7. The characters were great, the story was kinda rocky, settings.. They could of took a couple areas from the game, but aye! All & all, the movie was cool. Hopefully, if we get a sequel, its 10x better. Oh by the way, ya take on Milena.. Niiccceee lol, she definitely had a phat ass in this movie! Keep it up, SALUTE 💯.
At first I gave the movie an 8/10 but on second viewing I’ll give a 7.5. Seeing it in a imax theater with an audience definitely enhanced the experience though. I think if I would of seen this on HBO Max i would of not enjoyed it as much. Also I feel this franchise has a lot of potential. But I’m also a bit worried that it’ll turn more shitty each movie like the Resident Evil movies. I got Alice vibes from Cole. Where I can see them making Cole the main focus on all the movies.

I feel you guys 100 percent .but I still think it was a good movie (better than 95). But yeah a lot of things they did were like WHY. Two big things for me is cole being involved in the Scorpion Sub Zero fight and him beating Goro. Didn't know cole was devorah hahaha

In all honesty as a hardcore mk fan, i was left greatly disappointed in my overall experience with the film, the only thing i will praise it for is the cast choices for subzero and scorpion as well as the fatalities that came straight from the game, thats it.. This Shang Tsung was a joke, couldnt take him seriously with his Lord Ozai look from Avatar, Mileena's actress just doesnt do it for me and i can not believe im going say this but i prefer Annihilation Mileena more, and the fact Goro gets jobbed by this version of Alice all in favor of not including Johnny Cage who rightfully deserved to be in film over this mary sue in the making just doesnt work for me
You know if they play their cards correctly, this film could easily become a prequel to the original 1995 movie. For one Kung Lao got kill so that's why he's not at the tournament. Kano survived Sonya's attack and got his eye implanted. Then Kano went to murder Cole Young thus putting him on Sonya's most wanted list. Now we know who Sonya's partner that Kano killed in the original. Shang Tsung then learn of Liu Kang's brother and prepared to go challenge him. The Raiden that failed in this movie got punish by the Elder Gods and they later sent a different more experience Rayden to assist the Earth Realm warriors. This Rayden will meet Liu Kang at the Temple of the Orders of Light. Because Cole got kill by Kano, he never found Johnny Cage and never made it to the tournament. Because Scorpion and Sub-Zero are both dead, Shang Tsung is able to corrupt their souls and control them for the tournament. To avenge his fallen brother, Syzoch's brother Reptile enters the tournament, in the movie versions both Syzoch and Reptile will be two different characters. After mortally wounded by Cole Young, MK champion Prince Goro got restored back to great health to defend his title at the tournament.

The movie has problems I'm not gonna lie,but it was still watchable and enjoyable to see,plus the potential sequel could be more of a Mortal Kombat movie,we will see in time.
Okay, so when this all goes wrong, why doesn't he shift his strategy? How has he gotten this far by ignoring all the signs and suffering these losses? He just comes off like a jabroni.
I go out of my way to say that, yea, there is very rarely an actual tournament structure. Shang Tsung himself says they’re subverting the tournament. His motivation makes zero sense, but that’s bad writing, not a bait and switch.
As the MK fan I am I can’t say much except I hated sitting through this film. Best parts were the intro, Kano, Scorpion vs Sub Sero, and when it was finally over. I had to cleanse myself of this film with the 1995 film and had a much better time. To me this just shows what MK is nowadays, Blood, Gore, mediocre stories, and forgettable new characters. I really wanted to enjoy it but you can’t force yourself to enjoy something ya know? I hope the new animated movie will be enjoyable like the previous one. Haven’t been around in awhile so it’s good to hear ya.
Dude, I'm not exaggerating at all. The animatronics and puppeteering looks way, way better than this off color CGI junk. Look at 'em side by side and tell me which one looks better!
If Cole would have been killed by goro the whole theatre would have exploded. I liked the movie decided not to make lui kang the main character we have already seen that before and nobody will top robin shou

I liked the violence and Easter eggs as a fan stand point but I do agree with y’all they definitely should of had more of the stages and A better outworld. My personal opinion they should of maybe stretched the movie out and made it longer to give more characters in it a back story and explained it better. Hopefully in the sequel the directors and cast will listen to their fans and new viewers
I don't know if you talked about the article, but the studio put out the memo that Johnny Cage wasn't in the movie because they didn't want a "white male hero in a martial arts movie." So yeah.... That's why Cole Young exists. He's a studio note brought to life. In the WORST way!
I actually loved this movie. And I liked Cole although it took me a while to actually get interested in him and his arc of going from former MMA Champ who always quit and ran away when things got tough into the one who would unite EarthRealm's defenders. Though I will admit Shang Tsung's plan of winning Mortal Kombat #10 by killing all of the chosen defenders before the tournament begins that way Outworld wins via a technicality was actually pretty smart and in character for Shang Tsung yes I can totally see Shang Tsung attempting to win a MK tournament via technicality due to murdering all the chosen defenders before the actual tournament begins. And there was a report that confirmed for film 2 in this reboot series for the films we will being seeing Johnny Cage, Kuai-Liang, and Noob Saibot in film 2, with another report stating that Johnny Cage and Liu Kang will be the two central characters of the 2nd film.
I enjoyed it more than I didn't. But, man, I am with you 109% on your outlook. And I'm hoping they learn from our complaints, and just give us a fun new MK experience. Kinda like the novel....lol
I wouldn't say he got bitched out at all. He killed Hanzo's family, he killed Hanzo, he remained a high ranking Outworld solider for centuries. He nearly killed Jax, the entire EarthRealm forces are afraid to engage him one on one, etc. Suffering one defeat doesn't mean he got bitched out. Dude would have a record of like 987-1 at that point, lol

I think there was a balance between being made for "us" and made for newcomers. My wife, who didn't even know to expect blood from a Mortal Kombat property, liked the movie because she felt like she learned MK alongside Cole. I didn't like Cole because I would have liked to see more of my favorite characters but I get it for it being newcomer friendly and they don't have to worry about angering fans by changing a character to make them fit. I would prefer that it be Johnny Cage. But it makes me excited to see Johnny in the sequel

#616Entertainment loved you're review. I do think that this rendition of the movie is for hardcore fans, the person I watched this with, is only a casual played & she couldn't get into the movie. All I was getting is who's that, who's this, what do they do, are they good or bad. I can see a lot of casual MK fans not have a clue. Plus you couldn't have said it any better, what the hell did they do to Goro, was that Cole's first real fight, after losing to a no body/Average Joe & a couple of warm up's with Kano & Kung Lao. What a waste they could have had a list of recognisable characters. Yet no, they went & used Goro undefeated for 500 years & a no body beats him up in 5 minutes ( I'm sure they had the in game timer on). I didn't hate Cole's family, but I think they *should* have killed them off, and that should have been how he got his Katra (idk if I spelled that right). Seeing his family die, with a close up of his eyes flashing the same color as Scorpions for a moment, THEN the armor and bladed tonfa's would have been so much better for that.
I don't really understand the blatant hate that 616 has for the family, but they really should have served as that plot device for Cole getting his powers. That also would have been another way to link Cole to Scoprion as well, I think.

I legit could not stop laughing at the "HES ABOUT TO GET HIS SOUL SUCKED" line. It was so terrible and that whole sequence was the best unintentional comedy ever. Liu Kang and the heroes just stand there going "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" while Lao dies. They could have prevented that shit.

I definitely enjoyed the movie. While I'm disappointed some characters got killed up pretty early in this story arc, Kung Lao, It was still pretty solid. And I kinda like the Cole Young character, maybe we can see him as DLC in MK11. I mean, why not?

My daughter thought goro was the hulk
MK movie from 1995 resides in a special place in my heart. My father sent me a copy of it from Pakistan to the UK as a surprise on VHS. I was 7 years old at the time, having played MK (I know well underage) it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. And having the characters come to life on screen was just an ever lasting memory that will never be forgotten.
Not going to mention Annihilation but fun watch.
Fast forward nearly 25 years and the anticipation for this films was overwhelming.
Things they got wrong -
Shang Tsung but then again, no one will ever top Cary...ever!
WTF was up with Raiden in this? Came across as a total douche, no soul to his character.
Goro in a cabin in the woods....what?
Could go on and on about characters they got wrong.
Setting for fights had no imagination.
Apart from a couple of fights, there was no emphasis on a 1 on 1 fight like they had in 1995. You can't build on a characters fighting style or arc when you have like 5 or 6 going on at the same time.
No need for Cole and Co.
Things they got right -
Fatalities! Blood and gore! Kano's, Kung Lao, and Scorpion. At least they did this well. It solidified itself in the lore of MK that it is R rated for a reason.
The opening 10mins set the bar so high that anything after it would feel like it's come up short.
Kano stole every scene
Scorpion and Sub Zero, arguably most familiar characters from the franchise done right. Outfits, actors and SFX, pretty much sport on.
I could go on but this Full Review has pretty much got it spot on. It had some elements that were missing from 1995, but it had a lot of unnecessary sh*t.
End of the day a fun watch but not a great movie. Not saying I wouldn't mind a 2nd installment but they got a lot to improve on.

Honestly as an MK fan I thought the movie was meh, it just left a lot to be desired.

I got exactly what I hoped for out of a MK movie. It seems everyone wanted it to be like Oscar worthy or something. It's about interdimensional space ninjas fighting in a mystical tournament for world domination. It has badass fight choreography, lots of gore, some DECENT acting and special effects. What more can you ask for out of MK?
I agree! I think people set their expectations WAYYYY too high and that’s why they’re so disappointed. Sure the story is choppy but everything else was all cheesy fun!
Biggest problem was the pacing and some of the bland characters. I have hopes for the sequel, just need to give the movie a bigger run time in future.
I didn't need an Oscar worthy film. I just wasn't looking for Goro beating up a truck on a farmhouse or Sub-Zero dropping ice on a hot dog stand. The lack of imagination was stunning. I'm glad you liked it as much as you did, though.
As a MK fan, the movie had so many amazing references and battles that made it so much fun!

Dude, I felt like I was hearing myself listening to this review. I wholeheartedly agree with basically all your guys’ points. I too hated this movie once the credits rolled on my first viewing, but then I went back and rewatched it, and yeah, without any expectations just trying to enjoy the parts I did like I had a lot more fun with it. It’s still nowhere near the ‘95 original, but I’ll root for it if it means we’ll get more MK movies. Worst thing would be for the movie franchise to go dormant for 25 years again. Maybe with a better writer and director a sequel can right this ship, cause there are some good bones to work with in this movie, they’re just buried under really bad writing.

I went into this with a few standards.
It was a B movie
Low expectations because of the past.
Was quite surprised, they did a lot of things well. They focused on the combat first. Sub zero kicked ass. They didn't focus on Cole too much, they didn't try to make you care about him too much, him being attached to Scorpion helped the characters relevance. It's not an absolute masterpiece, it was still very fun to watch. Go in as an MK gameplay fan & you'll have fun. The story wasn't a huge priority. They focused on fun & they did achieve that.

Terminator 2 came out in 1991, it was the most expensive movie at the time to make, it cost 100 millionish if I remember. Annihilation came out in 97, budget of 50 million which was still pretty high for a film at the time, 6 years newer. Played & looked substantially worse than T2. This reboot had a budget less than Annihilation did in our current economy. So that equals quite a bit less. Movies costing 200 million to make now is pretty standard. Oh and you're shilling for Annihilation.. LUL
For a sequel, I would love if they brought in all of the Lin Qui characters, or at least setup for them for the third. Also they have to find a way to bring Kano back, he was the best character in this movie.

@@616Entertainment Given that Cyrax and Sektor will most likely be already converted in film 2, and we're getting Kuai-Liang as a confirmed protagonist I would love to see Kuai-Liang be accompanied by his 2 best friends Tomas aka Human Smoke and Human Hydro. Especially a human version of Hydro as the only 2 times the American Aquakinetic member of the Lin-Kuei is seen in MK material he's a jobber first in one of the MK2 comics where he's jobbed out to Scorpion, and then in MK: Legacy S1 where it's revealed he got turned into a Cyber Ninja and then proceeded to get jobbed out to Cyrax and Sektor. I actually want to see Hydro in his human form actually utilizing his martial-arts skills, Lin-Kuei training, and Aquakinetic powers to kick ass not be jobbed out to a villain.

I enjoyed the movie some of my favorite things are Reptile and the fatalities did you hear or read that The Miz could play Johnny Cage in the sequel and Ed Boon gave his support to The Miz
I thought the movie was also pretty good, a good 6.5 for me, same as the first mortal Kombat movie

I had very low expectations for this. When I watched it the first time at midnight when it released, I had some issues with it (Cole Young was unnecessary, Goro and Mileena got jobbed out, music was very bland, didn’t like Raiden), overall I was very surprised, impressed, and relieved with this movie. I gave it a solid 7/10 in my head. But the next day I thought that maybe I was just too excited (HUGE MK fan). After reading some tweets and watching some reviews, I started feeling like the movie wasn’t that good after all and I was just too excited about it. Watched it the 2nd time again tonight and nope, this movie is still very enjoyable and as an MK fan I truly believe that they tried hard to make it good. Plus my dad who couldn’t care less about MK really enjoyed it as well. Still a solid 7/10 for me.

From what I've heard, Apart from the the theatrical release, Was a 5 hour long movie with many scenes and world exploration, interactions with different side characters that connects the whole story. Like an Open World thing.
I do hope the sequel will be more bigger, and more improvements for the characterization and personality side.
Overall, I think this movie is a good build-up for the sequel.
All of the fighters that disappeared into the smoke in the end, will likely return. Hoping for a great sequel!

Scorpion was tarnished by Cole. We don't know why he was trapped in hell but suddenly appears in the third act in the Gym. "Get over here!" was strange coming from a guy from ancient Japan that has no background in English and continues to speak Japanese later. I don't know how they could have explained it?
I enjoyed the movie, it could've been way better, but for what we could've got, I guess we made out ok. I feel Reiko was the character done the least justice. He's much more than a guy who screams and swings a hammer. I'm not worried about all the characters who died, no one is really dead in mk. Going to watch this again. I hope it does well, I would like to see more. I appreciate your opinion, it's much better than some of the UA-cam critics on this.

A lot of fans including me are either WWE Superstar The Miz, or Ryan Reynolds to do the role of Johnny Cage.
I think Sub Zero being a cryomancer basically explains him being present in the future. What do people in sci-fi films do when they are travelling long distances in space? They enter cryosleep. Captain America was frozen alive in ice for decades in the MCU.
Either that or Cap was right on the money, and Shang Tsung is keeping Sub-Zero young as payment for his service.

I thought it was alright. The fights were cool and they cast good actors for the roles. But I have mixed feelings about it overall.

I believe the reason why Sub-Zero is still alive is because whatever fighters are on the winning side of the tournament they get an expanded lifespan in order to participate in the next tournament. And seeing as how Outworld won 9 straight tourneys it makes sense that he's still alive.

I think Reptile in the original game was just a palette swap bonus. But if he were a full character to begin with, I fully believe it would have been a lizard man as we got in Deadly Alliance.
Baraka, Reptile, Motaro, Goro, etc are all monster characters.
I believe this version of shang tsung said something along the lines of"we didn't win none tournaments by following the rules". So I guess were suppose to assume outworld kills off most of the champions before every tournament.

I’ve seen so much allowance for this movie from people... why should we accept this dung heap of a movie, especially after all that hype? And one of the main points these apologists make when calling us haters is that this was just a setup for a sequel... really? Don’t movies have to be good first? What kind of logic is this? The first screen proves how great of a live action adaptation we could’ve had for MK, and the rest of the movie was pure shit, excluding the Jax / subzero fight scene, that was pretty cool. Cole was a forgettable waste. Every other character besides subzero and scorpion and maybe Jax completely sucked. I’m not a pessimist or a negative person. This movie just sucked. What a let down. I could’ve written a better script... seriously. We need a Snyder cut type of redux... drop everything after the first scene, recast everyone else but jax (and maybe Kano, but redo the look for fucks sake) and go straight to present day Los Angeles. Johnny cage is fighting some badass looking ninja (throwback to the 95 movie intro to Johnny) and this very serious fight is actually just a movie scene. Johnny drama queens it to his trailer where he meets a Young Chinese man who speaks broken English, but wearing what a provincial Chinese tourist would wear to visit americas Hollywood. It’s liu kang. What are you doing in my trailer! Almost a fight, we have an intense moment, but liu hands him a scroll with the SYMBOL on it. I’m looking for the best fighters to represent us in a tournament. “Who’s us? What’s this tournament?” Liu says, “If you’ve got the balls.” Whatever. Snappier dialogue. You get the idea. This is off the top of my head. Clean it up a bit. liu kang leaves. Focus on the dragon symbol again, then cut to a big gold dragon statue surrounded by ruin. We are in outworld. Throw up a big “outworld” in white letters”. Set the stage of this alternate dimension. Throw some Easter eggs in (like a man on fire standing on a bridge in the background and then never explain it), show the hellscape of outworld a little bit. Then we see the silhouette of an AGED Shang Tsung on a throne, atop a mountain with lightening and that deep purple and red sky. and a warrior approaches him. We see red boots stepping up some ancient stone steps in the foreground to approach a fuzzy image of an aged Shang tsung in the background. It’s Ermac . He looks WICKED. He, in some vague conversation with Tsung, eludes to the tournament and it’s implications and how he wants to represent outworld and claim victory , but we get the distinct notion from him that his motivations for doing so are different than Shang tsung. Maybe its reiko, maybe, while showing a reverence for Shang tsung, they elude to shao khan not by name but by stating, “you’d better have this under control, no more chances, or the next time you see me will be your last.” You get the idea. Thus we have subtly set up the exposition for the tournament while letting the audience know there are all kinds of factions, alliances and tenuous relationships among these other worldly beings. Shang tsung says fuck you, I’ve got the Lin kuei and the shirai ryu under my control. I will destroy earth realms champions with their own warriors. The two step up, first time we see them both in their full gear. Scorpion and subzero one on either side, not looking at each other, but you can feel the tension between them. They are silent, like zombies almost. Tsung eludes to the ancient rivalries of earths warriors tearing earth apart, since they have no leadership/ no one controlling them (foreshadowing raidens apathy / ineffectuality and the elder gods too, when he shows up later). This is how I’ve won us nine straight victories, by tearing them apart from the inside. Their souls belong to me now, and if you dare to speak to me again this way, I will own all of the souls that inhabit your worthless shell, ermac (again... whatever) Shang tsung says, and should all else fail, outworlds victory is assured by our reigning champion. You can run back and tell the Emporer that earthrealm will soon be his for the taking, and I will have won my prize. Blah blah blah. Cut back to earth. Liu kang, Johnny cage, Sonya (played by a better actress with real martial arts abilities) join liu kang, do the whole boat thing again but better because that shit was awesome in 95, they need help bc liu isn’t enough to lead them. They need Rayden, raidens a dick, but he shows up to save them when Shang tsung sets them up to get their asses kicked before the tournament begins, they’ve convinced him to help. Scorpion and subzero wind up teaming up to fight the entire earth realm team and they’re kicking like four or five peoples asses, wind up fighting each other, whatever. You can do all kinds of cool shit. Keep the character list a little low for the first movie to build up some investment and make it manageable and have some kick ass fight scenes with lots of blood. Kill Kano off. Make it awesome. Etc. So much they could have done that would’ve been better. It didn’t even feel like Mortal Kombat.

I'll speak out for the MK fans who might not want to deal with the accompanying derision and say I thought the movie was terrible. Aside from the violence being on par with the games, everything else was trash. I don't care that they changed so much from the games, but I care that they changed things so much for the worse. The MK game story is already convoluted and crazy (in a good way - prefect for the video games), but the movie didn't translate that well and instead turned out incoherent, fraught with plot holes and inconsistencies that couldn't be ignored. I can't believe the '95 movie actually did it best now that we have this trainwreck to compare it to. Fan service isn't enough to say that this movie was what MK fans deserved. I look forward to watching your video to see what you thought.

Great review, 100%! Me honestly, 1 out of 10, I give this movie a 7. The characters were great, the story was kinda rocky, settings.. They could of took a couple areas from the game, but aye! All & all, the movie was cool. Hopefully, if we get a sequel, its 10x better. Oh by the way, ya take on Milena.. Niiccceee lol, she definitely had a phat ass in this movie! Keep it up, SALUTE 💯.

At first I gave the movie an 8/10 but on second viewing I’ll give a 7.5. Seeing it in a imax theater with an audience definitely enhanced the experience though. I think if I would of seen this on HBO Max i would of not enjoyed it as much. Also I feel this franchise has a lot of potential. But I’m also a bit worried that it’ll turn more shitty each movie like the Resident Evil movies. I got Alice vibes from Cole. Where I can see them making Cole the main focus on all the movies.
Though I loved the movie, you're right. The setting of Outworld was the best part of the game! Who wouldn't love to see the living forest on a big screen?

In all honesty as a hardcore mk fan, i was left greatly disappointed in my overall experience with the film, the only thing i will praise it for is the cast choices for subzero and scorpion as well as the fatalities that came straight from the game, thats it.. This Shang Tsung was a joke, couldnt take him seriously with his Lord Ozai look from Avatar, Mileena's actress just doesnt do it for me and i can not believe im going say this but i prefer Annihilation Mileena more, and the fact Goro gets jobbed by this version of Alice all in favor of not including Johnny Cage who rightfully deserved to be in film over this mary sue in the making just doesnt work for me
You know if they play their cards correctly, this film could easily become a prequel to the original 1995 movie. For one Kung Lao got kill so that's why he's not at the tournament. Kano survived Sonya's attack and got his eye implanted.
Then Kano went to murder Cole Young thus putting him on Sonya's most wanted list. Now we know who Sonya's partner that Kano killed in the original. Shang Tsung then learn of Liu Kang's brother and prepared to go challenge him. The Raiden that failed in this movie got punish by the Elder Gods and they later sent a different more experience Rayden to assist the Earth Realm warriors. This Rayden will meet Liu Kang at the Temple of the Orders of Light. Because Cole got kill by Kano, he never found Johnny Cage and never made it to the tournament.
Because Scorpion and Sub-Zero are both dead, Shang Tsung is able to corrupt their souls and control them for the tournament. To avenge his fallen brother, Syzoch's brother Reptile enters the tournament, in the movie versions both Syzoch and Reptile will be two different characters. After mortally wounded by Cole Young, MK champion Prince Goro got restored back to great health to defend his title at the tournament.
They're not that clever.

How people gonna complain about the film not featuring a tournament whilst there's a grand total of 3 games that feature a tournament in the story.
I go out of my way to say that, yea, there is very rarely an actual tournament structure. Shang Tsung himself says they’re subverting the tournament. His motivation makes zero sense, but that’s bad writing, not a bait and switch.

As the MK fan I am I can’t say much except I hated sitting through this film. Best parts were the intro, Kano, Scorpion vs Sub Sero, and when it was finally over. I had to cleanse myself of this film with the 1995 film and had a much better time. To me this just shows what MK is nowadays, Blood, Gore, mediocre stories, and forgettable new characters. I really wanted to enjoy it but you can’t force yourself to enjoy something ya know? I hope the new animated movie will be enjoyable like the previous one.

I liked the violence and Easter eggs as a fan stand point but I do agree with y’all they definitely should of had more of the stages and A better outworld. My personal opinion they should of maybe stretched the movie out and made it longer to give more characters in it a back story and explained it better. Hopefully in the sequel the directors and cast will listen to their fans and new viewers
There were so many things that could and should have been improved.
I don't know if you talked about the article, but the studio put out the memo that Johnny Cage wasn't in the movie because they didn't want a "white male hero in a martial arts movie." So yeah.... That's why Cole Young exists. He's a studio note brought to life. In the WORST way!

I actually loved this movie. And I liked Cole although it took me a while to actually get interested in him and his arc of going from former MMA Champ who always quit and ran away when things got tough into the one who would unite EarthRealm's defenders. Though I will admit Shang Tsung's plan of winning Mortal Kombat #10 by killing all of the chosen defenders before the tournament begins that way Outworld wins via a technicality was actually pretty smart and in character for Shang Tsung yes I can totally see Shang Tsung attempting to win a MK tournament via technicality due to murdering all the chosen defenders before the actual tournament begins.
And there was a report that confirmed for film 2 in this reboot series for the films we will being seeing Johnny Cage, Kuai-Liang, and Noob Saibot in film 2, with another report stating that Johnny Cage and Liu Kang will be the two central characters of the 2nd film.
I enjoyed it more than I didn't. But, man, I am with you 109% on your outlook. And I'm hoping they learn from our complaints, and just give us a fun new MK experience. Kinda like the novel....lol

Sub Zero is my favourite character and whilst I appreciate he had some focus in this film, I’m sad that he keeps being bitched out to Scorpion.
I wouldn't say he got bitched out at all. He killed Hanzo's family, he killed Hanzo, he remained a high ranking Outworld solider for centuries. He nearly killed Jax, the entire EarthRealm forces are afraid to engage him one on one, etc. Suffering one defeat doesn't mean he got bitched out. Dude would have a record of like 987-1 at that point, lol

I think there was a balance between being made for "us" and made for newcomers. My wife, who didn't even know to expect blood from a Mortal Kombat property, liked the movie because she felt like she learned MK alongside Cole. I didn't like Cole because I would have liked to see more of my favorite characters but I get it for it being newcomer friendly and they don't have to worry about angering fans by changing a character to make them fit. I would prefer that it be Johnny Cage. But it makes me excited to see Johnny in the sequel
