Apparently, (I read somewhere) the morin khuur string is not depressed onto the fret board. This apparently causes notes that are not in tune. The finger is pressed against the string from the side or below to change the resonance. In some cases, the string is pinched. This song gets into your head. I just play it on continuous loop when I work now. The other traditional stringed instrument, the tovshuur, played by Temka, is more like a guitar or lute and can have two or three strings. They are traditionally home made, so their design varies from tribe to tribe.

The original version of this song is in Mongolian and it's called "Black Thunder". This version was translated into an alien language with the help of the Lucasarts team for the game Jedi: Fallen Order, and it plays during the opening scene of the game. At concerts they've been playing the original version, which is supposedly going to be on their next album.

The Morin Khur technique does shorten the vibrating string length, it's hard to see quite how they do it even on the live videos. I think there are multiple techniques - one is "just touching" at the harmonic points, one is using one finger to press the string against another finger's nail, essentially "fretting" the string but with no frets (fingernail is the fret). Has to be devilishly hard to learn.

Nothing quite like those big open frame drums at the beginning (traditional Mongolian Hengereg).

they push the strings (from the inside out or from the side) instead of pressing.

Dude thanks for doin your homework! Its impossible to explain this band and sound to anyone in a coomments section. For your future veiwing pleasure watch Lzzy Hales documentary about her experience writing her part of Song of Women. Also there are two other documentaries one covers those amazing instruments. Yeah they are one of a kind. The other tells all about the band came to be. Want more personal info watch "HU's in the Kitchen" and " HU We Are".
