ALDI vs LIDL 2 person tents - which budget tent is best?

  • Aldi vs Lidl. Two 2 person budget tents going head to head. In this video we go over the basic specs of each tent, pitch them and have a good look around them. Which one makes the best first impression?
In the rest of the series we'll take them both out camping, try them in different weathers and generally see how they hold up over time. Only time will tell which one is the best budget tent around...
If you want to support the channel, please drop the video a like and subscribe, it really helps.
If you want to say thanks for any of my content you can always buy me a coffee - I don't actually drink coffee so any money received would be spent on used camping gear and the odd can of own-brand energy drink.

Hi keV, your reviews are very good.
The Aldi is an update of 70s of what we knew as a 2 man coffin squeeze tent (pitch the low end into the wind and they'll withstand gale force winds), and the sort of tent I'd take as a solo tent for backpacking long distance trails like the Pennine Way where carrying less weight is preferable for covering 15 to 20 miles a day (the furthest I did in a day with full loaded backpack/similar tent was 36 miles over the Lake District on Wainwright's Coast to Coast in '89).
The Lidl tent would be most ideal for a couple doing a long distance trail, because it affords the most room and easy access and because, presumably, the inner and outer could be split so the load was shared between the walking buddies.
I only backpack in summer these days and use a military poncho or basha and a lightweight bivvy bag these days to keep the weight to a minimum on a trek as I'm just a couple of years off 70.
I also have a 2 man cotton canvas (warmer than man made fabrics, totally breathable, so no condensation) French military surplus traditional ridge tent for base camping, but I could only sit up under the ridge due to slanting walls. I decided I wanted more sit up room, so a couple of weeks ago, I bought a very similar dome type tent to the Lidl one you've reviewed. Cost me £60, aluminium poles etc, so I wish I'd seen one of the Lidl ones in my local store, but I don't think they ever came in.
My videos aren't as professional as yours but you can see the stuff I use on my channel. I'll be using the new dome tent in Cornwall in September for a 3 week base camp on a campsite, but I'll probably also be doing a minimal load coastal walk over a few days wild camping with poncho/bivvy bag shelter.

My lad used the Aldi tent last week for a few nights backpacking in Orkney. As he's a newbie I had to put it up a couple of times for him. So this is why I know there are 17 pegs that come with it, enough to peg out the 4 guy lines as well. It lashed it down on the last night and all was well inside. Its cheap and cheerful but I'd definitely look at spending more to get better quality if using it a lot. Great video mate👍

The Aldi tent is very similar to the OEX Phoxx II, but it's missing the foot vent and the second door, as well as key features like the prop to hold the vents open and some additional pole clips. I found the Lidl tent on eBay and it arrived yesterday. Pitched in the garden and it’s excellent. Paid a little over the odds (£59) but still a massive bargain. The headroom is brilliant and the inner and outer together pitch is great. It’s still compact enough to take backpacking and bike camping IMO and I’d happily cut back on weight elsewhere to gain all that liveable space. It’s also freestanding apart from the vestibules so you can reposition easily to make the most of the views and prevailing winds.

Thank you for the interesting review of both tents. I already bought the Crivit 2 person tent from Lidl before watching the video. And it's still packed because I haven't used it yet. But according to your presentation, I made a good decision. My only concern is the weight, because 2.75 kg is not that little for longer tracking. I'll see when I carry it for the first time... 😉. At our Lidl (Slovenia), the tent cost €99.90 in the regular offer, but I got it for €59.90 in the sale. And I think that's a good price for what you get. And the tent must have a vestibule at least for smelly shoes.👍. And two entrances for this price range of a 2 person tent is just a bonus.

I only saw one two-person tent, so hard to compare like that. But even solo I'd go with the Lidl unless weight was a major factor. I checked the Aldi and Lidl tents in Germany-predominately tents from Aldi and Lidl have fiber glas poles. Could hardly find any with aluminium poles! So you get the better spec ones in the UK ;-) As you pointed out-very different usage profiles. The Aldi one if you want to do stealthy, undetected camping in areas where you being there is...questionable. For one person that would work. The Lidl one is if you are going with a two-person excursion that is more civilized ;-) As always-the right tool for the mission. I am too old for the military style-neither my bones nor my girth are suited for that. So probably the Lidl one would be the way to go. If you would go out doing CB-radio stuff you could sit in the Ldl one, and have a brew and talk skip. Looking forward to your real world reviews ;-) Thanks!

For me, it would be more about the conditions I would be in, but I have bought a similar tent to that Aldi model, although mine is longer at 240cms. I’m referring to the Highlander Blackthorn 1man tent. That kind of height is the best for stealth camping. It would likely fair better in a windy environment, better than a taller tent. The weight is also another consideration to make. If it wasn’t stealth camping and I had a car, it would be the Lidl tent. I wouldn’t buy that Aldi tent though as it’s way too short. The Lidl tent looks like a superior two person tent by any judgement. Perhaps the Aldi tent would be better recommended as a roomy, value for money, one person backpacking tent - there is a bit of a weight penalty compared with similar more expensive tents but not that much. And at under £50 that's not bad. Most manufacturers, even of expensive tents, are lying about them being suitable for two persons.

3000HH?? Anything stronger than a light downpour and you're gonna get wet, add in the wind and well, better to throw a good tarp over the lot. I have a Vango Keswick poly tent with 6000HH and it's been in some savage weather up in Scotland. Not a drop got through even with a force 7 wind hitting it. The air tents are much more resilient when it comes to winds as they bend, helping to reduce overall stress on the tent. For good weather cover, both of those tents are decent enough, just don't get caught in bad weather or you'll be wringing out more than your socks..LOL
