Nursing student here! Actually the cabbage one is partly true. No, if there is an infection quite severe treatment is required. But, cabbage is a great cold compress, has the form of the breast and is available to everyone. We tell women in postpartum to apply a leaf of cold cabbage that was in the fridge on the breast to help with soreness and inflammation after the first few weeks of breastfeeding. Works super well, mom's always think its pretty absurd but they love it! Love your videos Dr.Mike
Does the cabbage also release some vitamins or something into the skin? I mean, if people can use cucumber for face masks, i assume cabbage works similarly.
Well, Doc is actually right. It is cold that is helping... My lactation consultant told me that the cabbage is a very bad idea - it's better to put cold plates or special breast pads on your breast AFTER feeding. Before feeding it's good to put something warm to enduce the milk flow 😊
As someone with scoliosis, I'm really glad you made the point of not wearing one strap on one shoulder. If you have scoliosis and you wear a backpack by only one strap, that can cause uneven weight, worsen your curve, and even give you back and shoulder pain. One piece of advice I have (if you go to school) is to wear a backpack to school and not have a tote bag. If the school doesn't allow backpacks, ask the principal or an administrator for permission, and maybe get a note from your doctor, just in case.
YES. I had a doctor's note for a rolling backpack I could take to class, and always had a key to use the elevators. Not scoliosis, but other chronic bs that started nasty with puberty. My back and knees in particular were the worst. Plus a backpack is only supposed to be 1/10th your body weight, at most 2/10ths (10-20%). I was light enough that just a couple of textbooks passed that, so between not being able to take the stairs and needing to be easy on my body, rolling backpack was the best. Plus it's hard to accidentally leave stuff in your locker when you can essentially bring it with you.
I'm a nurse and they actually did teach us about the cabbage trick in my maternal/peds class. Its a thing. But they did not say why specifically cabbage.
Probably an old remedy before plastics were invented. But I could imagine it has a little bit to do with shape, the waxy texture that keeps it dry, and high moisture content to retain the coolness.
I dont know the medical stuff behind it but as a mom who nursed 4 kids and had many clogged milk ducks cabbage is a life saver!!!!! It somehow loosens the milk ducts and the milk just flows out, the cabbage comes out wet!!!!! It really works
I heard it has to to with the specific ingredients of members of the cabbage family, mustard is also part of that family and it is thought to help with inflammation. But still don't use just the cabbage! Medicine and some old knowledge don't have to be enemies!

Dr. Mike! Cabbage does dry up milk supply for when you’re done breastfeeding! I worked as a social worker for pregnant women in poverty and this was something our lactation consultants often helped them with. The post is misleading though because it could dry up their supply rather than unclog or whatever and that could be bad!! 🙄
Yes! The nurses used it on me when I had my second baby. They were going to wake me in the night for a feed and didn't, in the morning I had enormous engorged breasts - the cabbage was a life saver!
This is really interesting. Done as shown? Not eaten or anything? I love natural remedies and I'm always fascinated by what is commonly reported as working. I know that in herbalism, onion, potato and cabbage are meant to have drawing properties. Do you have any ideas as to why this works?
4:38 Bro those desks were the bane of my existence. I'm left handed and there was always the right handed desks in my school, so I could never use them properly. Now I know that they prevented me from scoliosis, but it was still annoying.
My former stepmother actually used the baking soda hack on my hair when it got unbelievably greasy, and it did wonders, though baking soda is quite harsh on your hair, so if it's only slightly greasy, follow Dr. Mike's advice on this one.
Hello. I started doing "no poo" (short for no shampoo) on my hair several years ago, and wish I had started sooner. Baking soda is the "shampoo ", and vinegar is the "conditioner". It works through chemistry and water temp (hot to wash, cold to finish). The Baking soda can be harsh if used dry, so now I only use it after it has been activated in hot water. It will fizz and turn clear, when done properly. It creates a somewhat slippery liquid that washes my hair pretty well.
Third year nursing student here. We were taught that cabbage leaves can be used as a non-pharmalogical pain intervention for new non-breastfeeding mothers who are experiencing discomfort due to engorgement post birth. My professor also said "we don't know why it works, it's just one of those things that helps" lol.
And he’s completely WRONG... he needs to spend time with neonatal/lactation specialists or read a medical journal... the fact that it is a cabbage leaf does MATTER... studied and verified
@@candicecart9786 it does nothing, cabbage has no effects on a milk duct inside the body, you dont just absorb vegetables through your skin, cabbage could help by becoming a part of your diet according to your studies that I haven't heard of before, but simply putting it on your skin doesn't do anything
Cabbage leaves are actually good home remedy for tender breast. I learned this is school in my OB class. It’s good for breast tenderness with breastfeeding moms. Now it won’t heal infections.
Worked for me. It’s not some weird magical thinking thing, it just logical. The leaves are thick and full of water, so they stay cold for a nice long time. The leaves are perfectly boob shaped, I can’t think of another vegetable that produces quite as perfectly bra cup shaped leaves. The texture of them doesn’t stick to any raw skin. Obviously, they are nontoxic, so you don’t have to worry if the baby gets a little cabbage juice left behind on your boob. You can use room temperature ones to help with clogged ducts by keeping in the warm moisture after a shower.
Note: Mastitis is NOT an infection of the nipple. It can *involve* the nipple, but Mastitis is an infection of the milk ducts in the breast, and is most common when baby has a poor latch and thus does not fully empty the ducts, or the duct gets blocked and clogged some other way. It is a bacterial infection common during the first 3 months of breast feeding, but most common when mom's milk comes in and the breasts become engorged. Having experienced mastitis multiple times in both breasts with both of my kids, I will swear by the cabbage leaf. I tried warm and cool compresses, lying stomach down in a hot bath and massaging the duct in order to hand express the infected milk in the blocked duct, as well as OTC NSAIDS, there is something about the cabbage leaf (someone really needs to do a research study into this) that goes beyond "it's cold, it helps", as the cabbage leaf would continue to promote pain relief even after it becomes warm. Bonus, the cabbage leaf is the same design as a breast, and fits around it perfectly without getting clothes all wet with condensation, and is surreptitious enough to wear in your bra even if you have to leave the house. Was the cabbage leaves individually and well, and you've got no worries about infection transferring in.
I love when this obviously intelligent, deeply articulate, profoundly thoughtful man, loses it and can’t find the words because he’s so upset. As in, “you are not…a…baking…object! “
Yes, funny, but that one bugged me because baking soda in hair is AWESOME for greasy hair when you don't have a lot of time for a full shower+dry time. He's obviously never had that problem. :P

I never knew that my randomly developed scoliosis could be from sitting sideways at my desk or carrying a heavy bag on one shoulder. I am guilty of both daily. My whole life makes sense now
I call BS on his scoliosis claim. I have scoliosis and have done a lot of reading and have always heard that posture and backpacks don’t cause scoliosis. (More often bad posture is caused by scoliosis and the person trying to stay comfortable.) Backpacks can exacerbate it, but does not cause it. I realize I’m not a doctor but either those studies are hidden in a secret vault for doctors only, or it’s not true.
suitcases can only cause postural scoliosis that is completely treatable with physical therapy and stretches. Most scoliosis are structural and the cause of its appearance cannot be known but it is a malformation that is not caused by backpacks. I have scoliosis and I had to have scoliosis surgery. My doctor says it's not my fault and I have to say I was always the person with the best posture in the room!
Yeah cabbage actually is a thing. My wife's obgyn and doctors all agree on that. It helps a lot. It's not a supplement for treatment, but it is helpful for things like trying to dry up your milk supply.
The "baking soda in hair" is basically dry shampoo. People with semi or demi permanent colors don't wash their hair very often because it will make the color last a shorter time. It's also a thing for people like me who are severely depressed and showering requires too much energy. That being said, decent dry shampoo is like 3 bucks and is designed to be put in your hair. Just get the dry shampoo.
The exact comment I was looking for. First, I’m sorry to hear about your depression. I hope you r better. Second, u r right about hair color. Even my natural blonde dulls if I wash my hair too often. Baking soda is used, in cleaning, to help lift odors and moisture. A good quality dry shampoo works great between hair washes.
If you already have it, cornstarch (possibly mixed with cocoa powder or powdered charcoal if you have dark hair), works great as dry shampoo. I've used it for a few years bc the alcohol in spray dry shampoos were drying my hair out. I wash my hair once a week and it works so well I only need to apply a little bit with a fluffy makeup brush halfway through the week. Plus if you use cocoa for color, your head smells a bit of chocolate!
I never have much luck with dry shampoos. I end up feeling like I just have greasy, dusty hair. I've heard about dry shampoos that are alcohol-based so they're supposed to just dry clean instead of feeling powdery but if there's one that actually works that way, I can't afford it.
When I had my daughter, the hospital told me that if my breasts were sore from breast-feeding to put cold cabbage leaves on them, it actually helps and they do suggest that
It's more the cold, but putting a block of Ice there is kinda impractical, and will melt So something that folds, retains the cold, and is cold, a cabbage leaf
Why am I so happy to see someone talking about farts so naturally and nonchalantly? Like for some reason everyone is so embarrassed by it they either deny they exist or make a joke out of it. I'm LIVING for this casual accurate normalization of natural body functioning
The cabbage thing really does work. It also dries up your milk, though. A lot of women use it when they’re ready to stop lactating and it works oddly fast. It just isn’t a great idea if you just have mastitis and want to keep nursing because then you have to fight to get your milk supply back.
@@axewalkwanna know something crazy. The L&D nurse on my discharge day told me about that. While I was in the hospital I was bottle/formula feeding my baby and decided I was going to nurse once we got home. So when I was being discharged I think the nurse automatically thought I was gonna continue formula feeding so she suggested all the methods to decrease my milk supply quick. Double up sports bras and/or cabbage leaves in my bra is what she told me. 🫣
“The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence.” (especially in reference to the cow urine meme)
During my maternity rotation in nursing school, my professors taught us that cold cabbage leaves are used to help stop milk from coming in for moms who aren't breastfeeding. Never figured out why cabbage leaves specifically were recommended and not just cold compresses - maybe because they contour to the shape of the breast? But we were even tested on it for licensing prep! Maybe that's where the cabbage leaf getting rid of infection started and it just got really convoluted and wonky
The cabbage leaf thingy is pretty systematically recommended in Finland (and I think also in the UK) for helping with swelling of breasts when there is a big supply of milk, especially during the first few days after the baby is born. This is the "official" recommendation for minor swelling, and they even have cabbage available in some hospitals on the neo-natal wards, but it's obviously not recommended for more severe cases, and absolutely not for infections, for which the recommendation is to go see a doctor and get antibiotics or whatever medication is needed. Unfortunately none of the websites of these hospitals or any of the instructions I've seen state what is so amazing about cabbage. I've seen a general mention of "an enzyme that reduces inflammation", but I haven't seen that many proper medical studies about it.
Same with my nursing rotation. There was at least one study done that supported it (but it’s been a while since I’ve reviewed any of that). I agree that likely any cold compress would work too.
The onion one..oh my I can relate. My grandparents for some reason had this belief that onions can cleanse your blood. I remember when I was 5 years old I had a verg high temperature..vomiting. They put onions in my socks and laid me in bed..I remember being so hot the onions were starting to cook on my feet. My mother finally took me to the hospital the next day, thankfully!
I don't have eczema but it sounds like hell, I do kinda understand you bc I'm pretty fair skinned do my skin is kinda itchy and peely from burns, but you guys definetly have it worse
I will say that the eczema hack does work. At least for me. It doesn’t make it go away but it eases irritation, dryness, and redness. Oatmeal as a whole is recommended by doctors. I’m not really sure why but every doctor I’ve been to has mentioned it. Not as a cure but as something that helps sooth it. Obviously it doesn’t work for everyone. I’m allergic to a lot of stuff so it’s hard to find medications that I can use and if I do find one they work for about 2 months before they stop working for me. Again it by no means cures it but when I have flare ups it helps.
Every lactation consultant I've had has recommended cold cabbage leaves for engorged breasts. Not mastitis or infection but to help engorgement ...that's it
That cabbage thing actually works, many women in my family use frozen cabbage leaves after they’ve given birth when their nipples become sensitive from nursing
@@FranklinClinton6903 Do you have breasts? No breasts, no opinion. They actually do work for reasons I'm not sure of. Hospitals use them, nurses and midwives are trained to use them. They could easily use cold packs but they don't because they don't work as well as cabbage leaves.
My Gram use to sing "Beans, beans the America food. The more you eat, the more you toot. The more you toot, the better you feel. Then your ready for another meal."
My geriatric patients love to tell me about the cabbage thing. A lot of them say that their mothers/grandmothers told them to use cabbage when they had issues with breast feeding back in the day and they tell stories about their husbands' crazy reactions to coming home finding a cabbage-covered wife :)
Yes they do when I had my girl my mother in law told me to use them I could not feed cause nipple rings messed it up so to dry up the milk cabbage leave in the bra worked like a charm just because some scientists have not found the reason for it being able to work or how it works does not mean it don't work I thing most of them are silly and out there but this cabbage to dry up milk has worked for so many lady's for decades and that can't be a coincidence there's a reason for it they just haven't looked for it yet so they call it quackery because they don't know why it works but there's some kind of compound in cabbage that dries up our milk and the proof is in the pudding as they say I wish they would look in to findind out how it works cause it does

I had my first child in 1992 in a military hospital. They had cabbage in a refrigerator, and gave it to me to combat breast pain and prevent an infection.
My wife’s doctor actually suggested cabbage to treat tenderness in her breasts related to breastfeeding. But it turns out she was trying to reduce milk production, which is what cabbage leaves are supposed to do.
I was looking for this comment. I don't know about other ones but my midwife swears by this cabbage method. It's cabbage juice to be precise so supposedly if you have a breast inflamation putting *beat up* cabbage leaf should reduce it.
@@kofffii So when its about the juice, that the post is still false or not? Because the description only says put a cold cabbage leaf on it and its work on its own way like a nobrainer
@@niklas9848 could not work if you just put the leaf on. My midwife says you should beat up the leaf first so it releases the juices and then put it on. The leaf is supposed to be dry after some time and the inflammation should disappear or at least be more bearable
I thought the same thing. The only thing I can put it down to is it isn’t about the leaves themselves but cabbage leaves are bigger and probably more pliable then a regular compress. Maybe that’s why they recommend them?
I mistakenly put toothpaste on my face in high school because I saw somewhere it was good for acne. Didn't realize that whitening toothpaste acts like bleach on teeth, so I basically poisoned myself. It was horrible. Now my face and hands react to bleach.
The idea behind the toothpaste is that it should dry your skin, similar to face masks or peelings. Maybe helpful to people with oily skin. I also heard that egg white has the same effect. I would be afraid that the toothpaste can be too aggressive, especially when many of them contain unnecessary additional mint, which can really cold burn your skin.
I had a medical doctor tell me that bronchitis 90% of the time will clear up on its own. I explained to the doctor that I have severe asthma and have never been able to get over bronchitis without medication. Needless to say I was seeing my family doctor the next day, who was angry because the doctor did not take my lung health seriously.
I had a doctor at a hospital, give me liquid penicillin for strep throat once. Went to a different doctor and told her that. She looked at me confused, and said, "Why on Earth did they give you that ? That won't get rid of it !" Told her, "That's why I'm here." It was the weirdest thing. Some doctors just aren't that bright. Fortunately for all of us, Dr. Mike is very bright.
I get that same s*** e.v.e.r.y.t.i.m.e I get bronchitis. And guess who get's pneumonia everytime 🙄 I have servere asthma as-well and even a simple cold takes me weeks to get rid off.
Dr Mike, chillled cabbage leaves to the breast is a common recommendation for engorged breasts and mastitis due to some anti-inflammatory components in the cabbage, also the shape works very nicely as well. Will not cure it but helps with symptom management. Been used by lactation specialists and midwives forever. 😀 Seriously not just a Facebook meme lol
Came to make this comment. Yes, it’s not going to CURE mastitis, but especially cold leaves provides pain relief and help to dry up the milk. This is something to do while weaning.
Lactation Specialist recommended this; it has nothing to due with it being cabbage. Cabbage leaf is just cheap and easily contours to the breast. When you have a clog they tell you to cold compress 20 minutes then warm compress 20 min alternating and messaging until clog is fixed. I wasn't weaning, my baby just couldn't handle the amount of milk my body would make. Did this until she was about 5 months old before it was balanced out. (Also donated BM to local babies of working Moms)
Doesn't it not stay cold for long because the cabbage leaf is so thin? And are you grinding up the leaf to allow the anti-inflammatory components onto the skin? What compound is it?
i’m currently a nursing student studying OB rn and actually my professor stated for women who are engorged and lost their baby, cold cabbage can help cool the breasts and prevent more milk production 😃
Yes, I also remember when I had mastitis that this was one of the recommendations. The other, which I got from my midwife, was to use yogurt - it actually helped a lot in relieving the pain. There are not that many medications, which can be taken safely during nursing.
it would work with anything cold but the leaves are breast shaped so they fit and you can use only a few leaves at a time so not to waste a whole ....lets say bag of peas.

But baking soda really helps because it absorbs the oils and helps your hair not look so bad. You don’t always have time for a shower so it is actually a good tip.
@@annemargaretbridges792 Washing your hair everyday is pretty bad for your hair, so using dry shampoo is really helpful for a lot of people. I know some people use baby powder, I personally hate the smell, and I've heard of people using corn starch to absorb some of the excess oils so their hair seems fresher and less greasy. Its less chemicals and cheaper than using a dry shampoo, and definitely more convenient than washing your hair everyday.
@@tatewakinew No, washing your hair strips it of the natural oils, which makes your scalp compensate by producing more oils. So you create a never ending cycle of wanting to wash your hair every day because it's oily, and it's oily because you wash it every day. Most people don't need to wash their hair everyday. Using a dry shampoo can help you start washing it less without it feeling gross.
The cabbage thing is for regular engorgement, not Mastitis. The former can lead to the latter and can be treated by cabbage. The latter cannot and needs antibiotics.

Dr. Mike! Cabbage does dry up milk supply for when you’re done breastfeeding!

Cabbage leaves are actually good home remedy for tender breast. I learned this is school in my OB class. It’s good for breast tenderness with breastfeeding moms. Now it won’t heal infections.
Yes! It really does help. You use it for tender breasts or when you're trying to stop breastfeeding.
I use the cabbage leaf to keep my chickens breasts moist and firm.
Yup. My mother used cabbage when she was breastfeeding my brother. This was over 20 years ago.
I was told it would help dry up your milk
Was the cabbage leaves individually and well, and you've got no worries about infection transferring in.

suitcases can only cause postural scoliosis that is completely treatable with physical therapy and stretches.
Also there are many hair types and scalp sensitivities that make daily washing WORSE for your skin and hair
If you MUST use something from your pantry, cornstarch is what you actually want to use
I just appreciate that the editing matches Dr. Mikes energy

It's actually recommended by vets as well for dogs and cats when they develop mastitis.
from what I studied while taking a lactation course its that cabbage has inflammatory properties
antiflamatory

Yep- I did it too 😊
Lactation Specialist recommended this; it has nothing to due with it being cabbage.
The headphone works better
Doesn't it not stay cold for long because the cabbage leaf is so thin? And are you grinding up the leaf to allow the anti-inflammatory components onto the skin? What compound is it?
Dr Mike: “you don’t want to keep your phone too close”
Me: 👁👄👁
Me:⚫️👄⚫️
Me with my phone literally touching my nose 😳
Tbh I kinda forgot doodlebob-
The grapefruit post makes me straight-up lose brain cells.
I sure do love kidney failure.
i’m currently a nursing student studying OB rn and actually my professor stated for women who are engorged and lost their baby, cold cabbage can help cool the breasts and prevent more milk production 😃
I was just about to say this
Yes, I also remember when I had mastitis that this was one of the recommendations. The other, which I got from my midwife, was to use yogurt - it actually helped a lot in relieving the pain. There are not that many medications, which can be taken safely during nursing.
I used cabbage leaves on mine and it worked.🤣 my hubby got excited thinking it would be like a sexy jungle lady look....he was wrong 😄
I also learned this while learning about lactation (I'm studying nutrition to become a RDN)
it would work with anything cold but the leaves are breast shaped so they fit and you can use only a few leaves at a time so not to waste a whole ....lets say bag of peas.
between you and your editor, you make such great videos! i love your content and your energy AND your sense of humor. you make things so relatable and understandable. and your are nice to look at. hahahahha. thanks for sharing.
The way he literally yelled reading the onion one 😂😂

I was shown this Dr by our 12 yr old grandson...I am SO happy he did! I'm enjoying his knowledge and jokes!!..Maybe a tiny dot of his knowledge will sink into my brain!
“You are not a baking object, do not bake soda on your head.”
~Doctor Mike, 2021
I think he's flustered. XD
@@RoyalReyna Washing your hair everyday is bad for your hair only if you have problematic hair or head skin to start with.
I busted out a good belly laugh while you screamed "it HEALS YOUR BLOOD!?" as the camera shook!! 😆🤣
I'm from Bengal, India and that guy Dilip Ghosh from BJP being featured on Dr Mike's channel is the highlight of today and so unexpected 😭😂

I was diagnosed with eczema at the age of seven, it can come and go but I can confirm oats definitely won’t help. It’ll just make it way worse.
Dr. Mike was so real and raw in this video. It was the best thing EVER. 💀
"Most natural way"
Yes, putting an onion in your socks while you're sleeping is so natural...
ok

YeAh ReAlLy nAturaL
He got so mad with the cabbage and onion. It just shows how stupid those methods are.
"Leave the cabbage alone" now that's meme worthy material right there
Poor cabbage man
My cabbages!!!
I spit my drink lmao
Cabbage wants some tiddy action
The cabbage thing is for regular engorgement, not Mastitis. The former can lead to the latter and can be treated by cabbage. The latter cannot and needs antibiotics.
Mike, when I was breastfeeding I had a LOT of milk and got engorged a lot. There is something to the cabbage trick - I used to put cabbage in my bra to relieve it. It worked for me 😂
We really need a compilation of Dr. Mike’s rants 😂
I would fave and share that faster than a slice of onion in the sock would heal me
That would definitely get a good laugh out of me!😂
@@ScientistCat so you could literally wait EONS and do that before onions heal you?
