These old cars have chips and dents, scratches on the manifold and engine side anyway, so a heat paste is a good choice. Pre war MORRIS recommends in thier Owners operation manual to put gasket paste on both sides of the gasket, especially on the copper head Gasket.
JB Weld is amazing stuff. I have a riding lawnmower the block crack in the oil passage. JB Welded the crack 15 years ago and still running.
