In this video I'll talk more about the most recent news concerning the Beach Boys touring group led by Mike Love. Scott Totten and John Cowsill both left the group this spring. John states on his Facebook page, that he was indeed actually let go by The Beach Boys (Mike?), because they want to "change things up".

The so called Beach Boys Mike Love leads is the Beach boys 'no danger to Mike's ego' band.
They sing the same songs but they are not Beach Boys. This Mike Love's dream of a band playing nothing but the goldie oldies. It's Dennis and Carl's nightmare come true.

John and Scott were fired so Mike Love could bring in people Mike could pay less money to. They're the reason people went to see them, they were more popular than Mike. This came from someone I know close to Scott. This is the story. They both gave 23 years. Most of us fans will no longer go to see them anymore. Jeff passed away just awhile back.

He can play or sing with anybody he wants. And John gets along with everybody, has a very mellow temperament.. it seams there are quite a few musicians, Mike love don't get along with .. best of luck with your future endeavors John.

i heard about John Cowsill leaving the group. (BTW, he's a great great drummer). BUT, I didn't know Scott Totten also left. The band will NOT be the same without him. He's the reason why The Beach Boys concerts are so authentic sounding. He became their musical director. and the 50th anniversary concert wouldn't have sounded so good without him. I think it's a bad choice letting them go.

Sorry to see John and Scott gone. I've had personal interactions with Mike Love when I was a member of the working media. I'll never pay to see his version of the Beach Boys tour. As much as John was a good drummer and vocalist, he started as a keyboard player. He moved to the drums when Mike Kowalski was "let go" for the same reason as John being let go. Mike K was a great drummer. After watching some videos of the new drummer, he reminds me a lot of Dennis Wilson. It's sad to see those two let go for a lame reason and that reason not being evident with the newer lineup. I've seen Brian's tour several times and Al Jardine as well. I will definitely go see Brian and Al perform. You are right those that attend Mike Love's Beach Boys concert are there for the nostalgia of the music and not the THE BEACH BOYS. Most people who attend don't realize that Mike Love is the only original member in that band, a long with Bruce Johnston who's been a long time member but is not an original member. Nothing against Bruce I think he does a great job

I was happy John Cowsill had such a great gig. I am sorry that he is not there. I wish him all the best. This was not about changing things up but rather internal politics, most likely, John Stamos had some role. It seems John Cowsill has some bucks from his Beach Boy days so that is cool. I saw Al Jardine's Beach Boys who with Matt, his son, and Carney and Wendy Wilson I liked Al's Beach Boys more than Mike Love's Beach Boys.

You make a lot of good points.
The Beach Boys per se were the group that made the name famous. Once Mike and Brian went their separate ways, aside from the 2013 reunion, they only live in the archives.
Mike Love ended up with the Beach Boys name and can do whatever he wants. Many (of us) are not fond of Mike, but he was often the lead vocalist and and had his share of writing credits so he is not to be dismissed. I set aside my feelings for the guy and we did enjoy a show years back (Foskett, Cowsill, Toten et al) and it was a fun evening with good energy. It was more of a garage band sound compared to performances of Brian's band, but the show, venue and setting made it memorable. At this point I wouldn't go out of my way to see what remains of this band.
Meanwhile, the legendary Brian Wilson band has been chipped away at. My first exposure was pre Lucky Old Sun. Brian was having an off night, but the band was phenomenal. He was in fine form for Lucky old Sun. We probably saw him 6 or so times since and along with his aging we saw the loss/departure of Mills, Bragg, Foskett, Bennett, Walusko, and intermittent Sahanaja. The show remained solid but ceased to be the original cast of much of Brian's solo work. With Brian's apparent retirement it's academic.
We got see Al Jardine with Matt, Probyn Wendy, Carnie and a band of Beach Boys supporting musicians and it was a really good evening.
Enjoy whatever is in town since soon the stage will belong to the tribute bands, which while not original, are not to be ignored. The music and feelings will endure.

    • @SoundofFree
      @SoundofFree  9 місяців тому +2

I agree with you. I would most likely go see Mike's group if they'd come to my country, which is highly unlikely. Last time they were here, I believe in 2011, they couldn't sell enough tickets for the venue they were booked, so in last minute their gig was changed to a smaller outside festival happening. It was kind of embarrassing, but the truth is, people want to see a Wilson on stage. So there's probably no market for Mike's Beach Boys here.

John is in Brookly N.Y. for a year as far as I know. He is doing more work woth The Action Skulls, which is great. John seems very happy. Mike Love from what I heard isn't the easiest person to get along with and wants to constantly tour . John has toured with that control freak for 20 years. That would be more than enough for me credit to John. Plus John is 67 and is just a few days older than I. Im sure he must have had retirement from touring all the time. Its time for John to do what he wants to do when he wants to do it. He's spending more time with Vicky playing small gigs, a couple weeks ago with friends of his The Smitherines in C.A. Just recently with i'm not sure with who in Asbury Park N.J.. Also smaller venus around NYC area. I could care less about the Beach Boys Touring Band. John made pleanty of money playing with them. His daughter lives in Bay Ridge Brooklyn where he and Vicky are renting a flat for a year. Maybe more but they can work with Bill Mumy from anywhere. They just put out on Spotify an album of all summer songs which I love with The Action Skulls. I have been a fan of The Cowsills since I was 9 years old. I often what would have been if their Father wasn't a jackass squandering 20 million they made in their 4 top years. I would have loved to see them stay together. Billy and Bob did a lot of good writing when they were popular. I once found an article about the top ten worst band fathers. Bud wss number one or close to it with The Beach Boys father. I Just hope John and The Action Skulls do some Touring. He has not mentioned it. As long as he is happy doing what makes him happy I'm ok with it. However I would love to see him in persom before anything happens to either of us. I have been waiting decades. Not interested in seeing his siblings. Just him.

I disagree slightly about the difference in ticket sales. The original Beach Boys fans who are feeling nostalgic also know the Cowsill name, and whether or not they were/are fans of the Cowsills, they may be at least curious to see John all grown up. That name still rings a bell with those of us who were around in the '60s, and I think it was still a draw for the Beach Boys touring group. Also, as has been said previously, John and Scott are both excellent musicians and, based on their work with the Beach Boys alone, were drawing a crowd. I think it will make a difference. At least that's true for me personally. I am John Cowsill's age and am both a Beach Boys fan and a Cowsills fan. I have never seen the Beach Boys touring group. They came to my area in June and a friend asked if I wanted to go. I said no because John was no longer with them.

I agree John Cowsill was what made this lineup so great. I am not going to be coy about this but I have followed this lineup for some time. I perform for a living and I can tell you once jealousy sets in it’s like a time bomb waiting to go off. John brought a much younger audience, and to hear the screams from girls after he sang, let’s say Darling might not sit well with Mike. I have met Mike and we had a good conversation many years ago, but I just got the feeling that he felt like he did not get the credit that he deserved because of Brian. Then I noticed John was put on keyboards instead of drums and that changed something in a big way, but the girl still screamed, and this is just my opinion I don’t know much about the other guy you’re speaking of but as far as John is concerned, he upstaged Mike Love and I imagine that did not set too well with him. I love John is the drummer and I wouldn’t even dare to compare Dennis Wilson with John. Dennis was a pretty face that brought a lot of attention but his drumming was just passable. I know John Stamos is a great drummer and maybe too good for that band but John ‘s drumming, and vocals. In my opinion was this new beach boy band. Jealousy, I have witnessed it in bands I have been in and it’s never a good thing and it tears most bands apart. Good luck, John and other projects that you do. You’re my favorite and I support you wholeheartedly.

@@kingofallwhites yeah John Stamos is a fantastic drummer, but he did not sing that I knew of. Does this drummer sing because that is what’s made John so popular. He’s got a great voice and he sings Carl’s parts really well. Plus he looked the part. I am 67 and John and I are the same age. But he is a very good looking 67. Those young girls did not care about his age. They knew he looked good, he sang good and John was a song drummer.,Fancy drumming does not mean that much in The Beach Boys. Do you know what I mean by a song drummer. Ringo is a song drummer not to mention he is the highest paid drummer in the world. Ringo played the song. And so did John.

I realize the drummer he replaced had been with the group for 20 years but Bolty brings tremendous energy and showmanship to this incarnation and his voice is being integrated more and more as each week goes by. Jon has a fantastic lead and harmony voice which will be a great addition to this line-up, and this is really coming to fruition based on the videos from a recent Terre Haute concert in which he more or less stole the show. A very kind and humble fellow as well who does not carry the cliche 'rocker' attitude at all. While his voice is not quite as close to Carl as Darian from Brian Wilson's group, he will nonetheless surprise a lot of fans !

I’m not surprised by this, Mike’s pretty much a “my way or the highway” kind of guy, and it’s been brewing for years. Due to his earlier years, John learned how to deal with a narcissist, so he was able to deal with Mike and his issues. I went to see the ML touring band because I loved Brian’s music, and wanted to see John Cowsill, not because of Mike. I got to give Mike credit for knowing how to pick great musicians for his band but that’s about it. Hearing a mature person singing about being true to your school is a bit ludicrous, and that song about TM was totally self indulgent nonsense, it made me wince every time. But Brian’s music was great so I put up with it.
Yes, I’ve seen the touring band quite a few times and you could tell when Mike wasn’t happy about John because he wouldn’t let John sing that night. Yes, it was that obvious.
The last time I saw this band they were a hot mess. Never found out why but the tension on stage was so bad you could cut it with a knife. And even Jeffrey was a part of it. Instead of actively playing guitar, he would strum when he felt like it which showed me that they were using a track on stage, that just blew me away. I actually got a big headache from it all. After that I couldn’t go to see the band, it just wasn’t worth it.
After being on the road for so many years I hope John enjoys his new freedom, he certainly deserves it.
And the less said about John Stamos the better, he was just dabbling with music. Mike would pull him out of the hat when he felt he needed a big name in the band, like the DC concerts.
I just want to know why a man in his eighties still wants to tour so hard, instead of enjoying his retirement. Is it the money or is it something else? Once again I’ll never know, but now that John and Scott are gone, I’ll never see that band again, what’s the point?

Without Al Jardine and Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston's version is just a cover band. Love and Johnston's singing is not good. I just listened to a version of "You're So Good to Me" with Johnston singing and it was horrible. He had no range whatsoever. Plus, Mike Love has this band being another extension of the Trump Party. Gun shows and MAGA events and Mike Love won't be far behind. They should be erased from touring as The Beach Boys since Brian Wilson certainly wouldn't approve of this carnival act.

Politics probably, Mike and Bruce are MAGA Patriots, friends of President Trump, have played Mar A Lago, and I know that Scott Totten is a big snowflake lib.

Not “The Beach Boys” without a Wilson on stage. This ,whatever you call it, is a cover band. A money grab for Mike Love.
