John was a monster drummer as a kid, and still is!

As a drummer for 52 years, I can say that MOST drummers of my and John's age started out the same way, watching Ringo on Ed Sullivan. I started the same way John did, I went to the Western Auto and got a few boxes and I took a coffee lid and nailed it to an homemade tripod of wood for my only cymbol. Me and my brother and a couple of neighborhood friends started our own Beatle band in a garage and we were all wearing Beatle wigs brought from nearby San Antonio, Texas, bought for $1.00 each. All the neighborhood kids came to hear and watch us "play" to a small record player of Beatle 45's. That feeling that you were in a band at 10 years old was the basis to what I became and still do at age 66. And John is still doing it, too. Who says they way you were raised isn't the way you'll be when you're an old man? Ha!!!

You're 65 John. Wow. I grew up with the Beatles, the Stones, Tommy James and the Shondell's and The Cowsills. I'm 64 now. Though you are a year older, still we grew up in the same era. That was a good story. I enjoyed 😉 ☺ 👍👍👍

I’ve been impressed with your drumming since I first saw you playing as a kid.
You were definitely born to be a drummer. You have something that can’t be taught.
    God bless.

JOHN IS ONE OF THOSE MULTI-TALENTED MUSICIANS = HE MADE A QUICK CHANGE FROM GUITAR TO PIANO FOR THE "BEACH BOYS" LAST MINUTE! NEVER LOOKED BACK - NOW ON DRUMS! GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS HIM & THOSE "COWSILLS" STILL WITH US!

I loved the Cowsills! Had the biggest crushes on Barry and John (what girl didn't?). I met them in 1969 at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos, CA - a memory I will always treasure! Thanks for making my girlhood more joyful!

I saw this guy with the Beach Boys at the Royal Albert Hall about 7 years ago. Was an incredible performance by all but this guy really blew me away. He managed to get the signature Pet Sounds drum sound perfectly. I can still hear the intro to 'I'm Waiting For the Day' reverberating around that wonderful space.

I encourage all to watch John’s live performance age 10 with the Cowsills on Sullivan. He was unbelievable - as good or better than drummers of any age might be. He didn’t freak out as other kids might have playing in front of hundreds of people and before those massive cameras they used back in the day. John is a gifted drummer and has been all his life.

Long time fan and LOVED the We Can Fly album...Gray, Sunny Day, Time for Remembrance, In Need of a Friend. I remember seeing you in Cohasset, MA; great harmonies, great songs. Watched the documentary on TV & heartbreaking to see that you've lost Bill and Barrry. All so talented...keep the faith. Going this Thursday to see The Cowsills with my sisters& a few friends. Not sure how many of you will be there but I am looking forward to hearing the wonderful sounds of your voices together..

John is an incredibly talented drummer and a great singer = double threat. Few people enjoy the success he had with the Cowsills and playing with Beach Boys - there is no negative to the story to be conjured up. Few people have this level of talent and success.

What a wonderous take on the Family Band history from his place as the youngest son. This video has actually answered some questions for me and I appreciate the honesty in it. Thanks for sharing with us all Cowsii! Keep on Rockin'! Thanks also to Vater Percussion. :^)

Really enjoyed this. John Im sure you will never read this but we are about the same age. Im also a Led Zeppelin fan. Led Zeppelin 2 was their best album. Im proud of us older guys born in the 1950s. I became a Cowsills fan when all the girls 13, 14, 15 only listened to The Cowsills music and not Led Zeppelin. So thts how I became a Cowsills fan and a heavy rock fan at the same time. Two totally different types of music.

great interview, I've learnt more in 14 minutes about John and the Cowsills than I've ever known about his family band and history, (ok I've lived a sheltered life in the UK).
Only found out about the Cowsills in a 'round the houses route',
via Susan, once married to Dwight etc etc,
some hidden gems recorded by the Cowsills that are hard to find here in the UK on Disc (I effing hate itunes downloads, give me something I can hold on to). anyhow what is that song and who is it by? that is playing during the interview. sounds like Linda Ronstadt. can anyone confirm song and artist.......there's a big cyber thank you if you can help.
cheers in advance you wonderful people .
