The thing is, people compliment me on my skin, and I've been using La Mer for about 8 years. Nothing but La Mer... because I like the La Creme especially for how it seems to reduce the 11's between my eyebrows (among other things). I have no idea why, but it just seems to work. When I run out, the 11's come back. It's weird, I know. But I like the products for my skin care. I am 68 years old. Thank you for your incredibly thorough report. I just subscribed.
I've used the face cream and the eye cream in my 20s. Skin became more hydrated and supple in a way no other products have achieved. Back then I was using brands like Clairins, Lancome etc. The only other brand that even came close to such results was SKII, another controversial brand with sky high price tag. It also managed to get rid of my flaky skin one winter, tried every cream and oil I had, La Mer was the only products that got rid of the dryness/flakiness. It is much more than a drug store cold cream.
Oh dear, I'm in for a ride w/ this one... As if I didn't already believe this brand was the result of wealthy lady brainrot based solely upon the term "Miracle Broth", the title alone let me know I was right & then some. I'm excited to finish watching!! 💕
As someone who's always thought La Mer is over-priced & not worth the cost for what the ingredients are...I actually found your deep dive truly interesting James! Thanks for the entertainment while I re-do parts of God of War 2 because I missed gorgon eyes. 😂❤
A lot of people post WWII changed their last names if they sounded too Jewish to avoid further persecution or even too German to escape their pasts that involved the war. He could have possibly been one of these people.
I was gonna say.... German rocket scientist, ended up in US by 1950s, maybe doesn't like his photo taken? There's a lot of German scientists with fuzzy immigration paperwork, perhaps some records missing from their Paperclip. Depending, it may even explain why NASA wasn't putting his name on their records. Although I'd bet that claim is more myth build-up or him letting stars make assumptions for marketing reasons.
This was so very interesting! Thank you for your research and very informative episode. La Mer certainly takes first place for the most intriguing, unusual origin story I have ever heard.
I’ve been using La Mer for several years. I can confidently report that the main reason to use it is anti-inflammation - if your skin is red or irritated, if you’re recovering from a cosmetic procedure, etc. It speeds up my recovery noticeably, and takes down my face’s redness to the point where I can tell when a selfie was taken based on how red my face is or isn’t. But it might not work that way for everyone. I tell people to try getting some free samples and taking before-and-after photos to see whether it works for them.
fully agree with you, only La Mer cream can calm my broken skin barrier and clear my problem skin! The eyecream is the only one that can soften my crow's lines and crepey eyes!❤
100% agree with you. my acne dissappear only one or two days after use la mer soft cream. I got acne because I often try different skincare. la mer for the rescue.
The thumbnail promises a wild ride and I’m so HERE for it! I always just thought of it as another overpriced skincare brand but I’m stoked to learn more.
OMG, I love this! German working for nasa in the 50s? Cold war, rocket science, soundwaves, mysthical broth... You could make a really crazy good tv show put of this!
One of my friends growing up had 3rd degree burns over 70% of her body, and ive never liked how la mer implies that their products can totally heal burn scarring, so ive never purchased anything from them. Honestly, if they didnt advertise it that way, i probably wouldve tried it a couple years ago. But im very stubborn😂
Friend of mine was burned in a car accident, and La Mer was recognized from her health insurance as an effective cream antidote and the insurance paid for it.
Such a wild ride! I’ll admit I’ve tried La Mer several times out of pure curiosity and I genuinely wanted to dislike it. as somebody who has extremely sensitive, eczema prone skin who has tried everything to help it I felt like there was no way this could help. I hate to admit that I actually loved it bc It was so soothing! I didn’t love it to the point of making it worth purchasing but I will take every free sample that I can get my hands on! 😂
I used to work at the Saks Fifth Avenue call center back in the late 90s. We would get free products when a promotion ran, and one was a jar of LaMer. I was suffering from very bad hand eczema, my hands were red and peeling and itchy. LaMer calmed the itching and redness, and my hands started to look and feel much better. I can't afford it but years of using fragrance free drugstore lotion brands ended the eczema so luckily I don't need to waste hundreds of dollars on it. Whatever the questionable beginning, it worked wonders for me, and I'm one that side eyes these types of products.
I was severely burned many years ago, and it's interesting that all of my plastic surgeons used Nivea on their patients and never once even mentioned La Mer!
I don’t have La Mer money, but a few years ago Sephora had sets with pretty nice deluxe samples of luxury products for $25 each. There 4 different ones and I managed to buy 3 of them. They did have different products, but all 3 had the original Créme de la Mer. I used all of one sample and hated it. I have normal skin that is sometimes a little oily in my T-zone. It was greasy when applied, but my skin would be dry the next morning. I gave the other 2 samples to my mother. She didn’t like it either. Maybe Estée Lauder did ruin it. I also received 2 samples of SK-II treatment essence. Now that is a luxury product I wish I could afford.
Amazing video! I would love to know your thoughts about the new skincare brand from Sisley Paris called Neuraé. They claim it’s “skincare elevated by neuroscience”
@@maryeckel9682 I honestly haven't a clue. They allege that the ingredients in the product line assist in stimulating neurologic responses for joy, serenity,, harmony, and energy. Its very interesting, but also extremely hokey
Great deep dive!! I knew the crazy production theory but you went so much deeper in that part of the story and gave so much info that I didn’t know! I got a free sample of creme de le mer so I can say I have tried it 🤣🤣. My limited ability to review the product from that sample, I can say it didn’t the texture wasn’t impressive and my one use didn’t make much of an impression. My skin felt moisturized but not in any memorable way. Obviously I didn’t have enough for a fair review but, for the price, I would have hoped that it would have felt nice enough to at least wish I could afford it!
I'm not wealthy by any means, but I do have a sub-category in my YNAB account to afford a small little jar of creme de la mer every 6 months or so. I have had horrible acne scars and really prone to hyperpigmentation skin my whole life, and there's nothing that compares in my opinion.
Great video as always! The structure is wonderful and really shows your effort and study on the topic. 👏🏻 Could you make a video for Helena Rubinstein? I am really curious to know how the brand is doing as it was not so popular in my country (Greece) when I was working for L'Oréal. 🤨
I know it’s pricey and may be bullshit but there’s something about that glass jar that brings me such joy and the fragrance and formula makes me feel for just a bit like a special diva…..sorry, but i do love this stuff!!!
One of the people at La Mer once told me ‘don’t waste your time’ 😂 also noticed that its fragrance is through the roof and that on one of the beauty warning websites it scores extremely high, its in the red zone.
La mer seems like such a scam. Basic ingredients for a very luxury price? No thanks. There are much better products that have the “miracle broth” (which is just seaweed extract) in it, but with a better formulation/better ingredients
I’ve actually been thinking about Le Mer lately, and this video has put me off buying it (not that I would spend anywhere near that much on a skin cream!). I understand why people think the existence of the scientist may be a marketing ploy (and I’m not big on conspiracy theories). The whole playing music and psychic thing is madness, and the justification for the price tag is unbelievable. Surely there’s no way they’d actually go to that much trouble to make a face cream?! It all sounds like a fairytale to me.
I am 66 and have used La Mer for 20 years. I get lots of compliments on my skin, including from my dermatologist. I am retired now and have to save to buy the small jar every 6 months.
I'm 61 years old and have great skin. It's always been very clear and I'm practically wrinkle-free. I have never used expensive products of any kind. Simple soap and water for my face, and plain white face lotions. I also like to use a rosewater & glycerin spray which is not at all expensive. As I've gotten older, I've added some drugstore-priced serums to add more moisturizing properties as I get drier with age. All of this is to say that it's more down to things like genetics, sun protection, hydration, and a regular routine, than it has to do with an expensive cream. However, I defend your right to buy whatever you like. Obviously it makes you happy, and you have good results, so that's fine. But I also have good results doing something much lower-end. So to anyone bothering to read this, just take care of your skin the best you can. Don't drink, don't smoke, stay out of the sun, and get plenty of rest and water. That will do a lot for your skin.
@@sharimeline3077 my grandma is 83 with good skin smokes like a chimney. Great teeth too at her age. She also uses maybe lower end products. Her hair is also still more or less black.
Someone once told me he used to collect the flower (I don't remember which one but it grew by the beach) only on nights with a full moon. She stopped buying it when it was bought out and that no longer happened. IDK how true this is; she was a bit of a kook.

None of the aftershaves I’ve used worked. I was still breaking out Fast forward, I tried La Mer’s new treatment lotion at the time around 2014 maybe? And overnight I swear till now that I don’t break out after a shave. When I don’t use it, I would break out the next day so I tested it myself and for me, La Mer is worth it! I use a lot of their products and swear by it!
Uploaded right when I got home from work, absolutely perfect timing 🥰🥰
Another journalist-quality video. I'm too poor to try out this brand but this video was so interesting and now I'm fine with that. Keep up the good work James!
He probably died from eating Le Mer 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Or a terrible eye infection 😬
That's exactly what I was thinking. Infection? Undisclosed manner of death? 🧐
I remember wanting La Mer so bad in the late 90'/ early 00' 😂😂😂 I'm so glad i couldnt afford it....I absolutely love these videos💜💜💜💜
Absolutely love this video! I hope you're gonna do more of these beauty product history stories. Very pleasant to listen to your voice and always nice to learn something about the products we use (or not use 😉). Thanks for this, James. Love you! 💕
He is german, working for the goverment of the US in the 50s? That's not a good combination 😅
Suspicious, for sure
Ooops all "not seas" 🙄
“Operation Paperclip-big ones”
My thoughts, especially scientists 😂
A rocket scientist no less, oof
I absolutely love these types of videos from you! You do such a good job researching and presenting. Fascinating information! Definitely keep it up!!!
Why this whole mysterious vibe make me want to try it out now 😂😂 can’t afford it so I’m safe
Absolutely love this series
Loving these deep dives and your thorough research. Keep up the great work!
thank you for this! i love watching your videos while trying to fall asleep (it's almost 5am where i live at right now) because i always find your voice soothing but i also love watching your videos while im doing mundane things during the day because of the information your videos have so yeah, i really appreciate your deep dives!
When I started following you, I did not expect you to be so good at these things, but this is journalist quality for sure :D
So late to this but it's fascinating! Love this format too with the chapters etc. Makes it v polished and logical
Very interesting! You have the best story time voice!
Loved this video!! More beauty conspiracies please!!
As someone who's always thought La Mer is over-priced & not worth the cost for what the ingredients are...I actually found your deep dive truly interesting James! Thanks for the entertainment while I re-do parts of God of War 2 because I missed gorgon eyes. 😂❤
I love these behind the brand videos!
I love this series. Your voice is so soothing.
That’s an amazing story. Thank you James ❤
what a fantastic video. I had no idea about any of this history but that was FASCINATING
Someone needs to make a movie about this brands history! So bizarre!
Not sure about their other products but their cushion is soo good , i really love how it sits on my face .
This behind the beauty series is great!
This was so very interesting! Thank you for your research and very informative episode. La Mer certainly takes first place for the most intriguing, unusual origin story I have ever heard.
I’m so happy I found your channel! I love your videos and hope you keep posting more like this!
This is a crazy story! Thanks for sharing it with us!
20 euros Cicaplast B5 balm from La Roche Posay does that. Any product with zinc and centella asiatica does that.
@@DeadKraken LITERALLY. EVEN BABY RASH CREAM!!!
I’ve noticed the same thing with some of the products. I can’t use the cream, the smell is too much.
100% agree with you. my acne dissappear only one or two days after use la mer soft cream. I got acne because I often try different skincare. la mer for the rescue.
Loved your editing format and chapter breakdowns!!! 🎉❤ I'll never try this brand due to the luxury of it but the history is intriguing.
Great work here James!!! Love how you've evolved. Pls do the history of augustinus Bader 🙏
Such a great video! So informative*AND* entertaining! Thank you! ❤
That was fascinating, thank you!
@@maconreid did it work?
Such a wild ride! I’ll admit I’ve tried La Mer several times out of pure curiosity and I genuinely wanted to dislike it. as somebody who has extremely sensitive, eczema prone skin who has tried everything to help it I felt like there was no way this could help. I hate to admit that I actually loved it bc It was so soothing! I didn’t love it to the point of making it worth purchasing but I will take every free sample that I can get my hands on! 😂
I love this format of video! Please more :)
Please don’t put modern La Mer in your eyes, it’s definitely not the same formula
My Cosco sells La Mar… so how luxurious is it really?
Loved this video!!! ❤️
So fascinating. Thank you 🩷💜🩷💜
I used to work at the Saks Fifth Avenue call center back in the late 90s.
Damn, I really like how you present this story. I’d love for you to do more stories presented like this
I love yours and Robert’s deep dives into interesting topics
I was severely burned many years ago, and it's interesting that all of my plastic surgeons used Nivea on their patients and never once even mentioned La Mer!
Sea kelp . . . sounds like “seek help.”
I love these videos. So informative and interesting. Thanks James 🖤x
When I first started reading the title, I thought it was going to be about Scentbird!
Where's your pfp from? It's really beautiful!
@@char1211 I found the picture randomly on pinterest! And if course it was uncredited.
Now that is a luxury product I wish I could afford.
it’s crazy to see your video in the single digits for views from how early i am
i randomly opened youtube and boom
Omg ‘a healer’ what have I been buying?!??!?
Amazing video!
I would love to know your thoughts about the new skincare brand from Sisley Paris called Neuraé. They claim it’s “skincare elevated by neuroscience”
wow neuroscience? the science of brain chemistry? that sounds kinda far fetched, thanks for the research material☺️
Why neuroscience? That's a big stretch.
@@maryeckel9682 I honestly haven't a clue. They allege that the ingredients in the product line assist in stimulating neurologic responses for joy, serenity,, harmony, and energy. Its very interesting, but also extremely hokey
These words mean nothing in the grand scheme lol. But I love busting possible scams open and new things.
Loooove this vid I actually want “chapter 2 establishing his cult” as my ringtone 😍💕🎀
Ah, perfect, I'm sick too 😂 Hope you're doing better already. And thanks for making my sicky day a little bit nicer ❤
The strong scent of la mer did me in. I’m glad I had a decent sample to try so I didn’t pay money and force myself to use it.
Please do more videos of the history of brands and skincare!
Really enjoying these Behind The Beauty videos! This was very interesting. Not really buying any of this bg story stuff though, I can't lie 😂
Great video as always! The structure is wonderful and really shows your effort and study on the topic. 👏🏻
Could you make a video for Helena Rubinstein?
You probably just have good genes 😊
My grandma is 70 and has great skin, all she used all her life was Vaseline on her face lmao. ✨️Genes✨️
😅😅😅 the cap in this comment thread is hilarious
@@sharimeline3077 my grandma is 83 with good skin smokes like a chimney. Great teeth too at her age. She also uses maybe lower end products. Her hair is also still more or less black.
Someone once told me he used to collect the flower (I don't remember which one but it grew by the beach) only on nights with a full moon. She stopped buying it when it was bought out and that no longer happened. IDK how true this is; she was a bit of a kook.
When I was a kid my mom's best friend used to say "kook" stands for Keeper Of Odd Knowledge
Hi James! Just a comment that your screenshot on the lefthand side of the screen at 26:10 is in Japanese, and the comments underneath both the American and Japanese website screenshots are in Chinese. Loving all these deep-dive videos into giant beauty companies like the Body Shop (not buying from them ever again lol) and La Mer! :)
Heyyy! Yeah I’m showing the American, Japanese and Chinese screenshots from the original Weibo post! Sorry if I didn’t make that clear!
@@JamesWelsh Oh, gotcha!! That makes sense now.
Love how you did that video
Say what you will, La Mer really works on my skin in a way few other things do. I used to follow the fragrance-free, lots of actives, Paula's Choice ethos to skincare and I was always breaking out, or dry, or otherwise irritated. I was always fighting fires.
At last I switched to Creme de la Mer. The transformation was extraordinary.
