This is heartbreaking. These people should be enjoying the realisation of living in their dream home, not going through this nightmare. I might own a cheap 70s shitbox, but It's still structurally sound after 50 years (and 1 flood) and I can relax without fearing that the entire thing with come down in my sleep. I love how the builder just says, 'yeah mate, i did it all good (if you class it as a shed)' and that's enough to pass it. I hope these people find justice.

Before I started watching these videos, I thought the newbuild I bought 8 years ago had its issues, but by comparison, I now feel like I'm in heaven and all is well on planet earth. Mostly the rendering subcontractor that botched the job a bit in my case, so might have to have the whole house rerendered at some point, but so far no moisture ingress, despite the cracks in the render, so I guess it's constructed in a way that the render is mostly decorative and I can count my lucky stars. Complete rerender would be around $15k-$20k USD and the warrantee company that the development was under went bust during COVID.

I have a family member that works as a plasterer in the Melbourne area. He consistently witnesses builders cutting corners to the extent where the home will only just last within the short warranty period. He has even witnessed builders involved with the theft of materials. For example they'll organise entire kitchens, bathrooms etc to be stolen from construction sites, whether it be their own or someone else's. As an independent plasterer they are treated like dirt by the builders, and has no power to report any of it without losing their job at best.

The law is there to protect the builders not home owners! Every failed inspection has been approved through a government agency?? They can get by with poor workmanship because the law doesn’t take in or account for poor craftsmanship?? The only recourse is taking them to court, think what happens when they are held liable they just close shop and reappear under a different name, it’s the same problem in North America as well!! Until someone can take the inspector or government to court nothing will change, there are countless videos of inspection companies like yours with costly issues and failed work!! Nothing like 200 tubes of silicone to fix a 2 million mistake! These home owners are probably going to have to hire a professional engineer to prove to the court the failed building and costs to repair! Codes to builders are general guidelines, that letter only proves the ability to pass responsibility and how there are protected from liability for doing nothing?? What it does prove how the inspection process is flawed!! By sighing off they assume responsibility it’s actually fraudulent on part of the builder?

There is, but it's complicated. Housing pressure is a huge political issue at the moment, so being able to say "we build x amount of new housing in the area" puts pressure on local governments to approve, as they get pressure from state government to increase their population capacity in their wards. Then on top of that, go to any political drinks night, and see who is there, it's 75% real estate agents, or construction ceos. They love to feel important, they provide lots of jobs and can provide for a political hunger in the population. They get away with loads. But it's how the game is played. You gotta go rub shoulders too, so you can bend their ears. It's not really so much money, as much as always being around the people that make the decisions.

49:47 eddy currents is a term from electrical engineering, basically a conductor, pretty much any metal will induce currents when it moves through a magnetic field, or a magnetic field moves past the conductor. The current induced creates its own magnetic field in the metal, which works against the inducing magnetic field. There are a lot of demonstrations of this, when you let a metal pendulum pass through a magnetic field it gets slowed down so much that it basically stops. This effect is often used at rollercoasters to stop the rollercoaster without having to worry about wear and tear for breaks, for example.
However, I have absolutely no clue why they would introduce eddy currents for anything in the wind loading section of a house construction, especially in regard to response spectrum design… this makes no sense at all.
