Bro as someone that lives in Karama and sees the sort of stuff these guys described regularly, I’m really glad you’re doing these vids and showing the rest of the country what it’s like up here. Most of the country don’t mean any harm by what they say, but more often than not the issues here are constantly downplayed. Unless you’ve been up here and seen things like you have with these lads and heard the stories, you can’t truly understand what it’s like. Hopefully your videos help bring some light to the rest of the country and hopefully whatever help that is needed to get this place back on track can be given. It really hit me when you said a gypsy ghetto in Bulgaria is civilised compared to Darwin.
As someone who lives, what do you think would help? I'm genuinely curious. Darwin overall seems like a scary place from what Spanos experienced once back in town.

issues in Karama and elsewhere aren't downplayed. They're actively ignored & suppressed to keep the non governmental organisation money plus various budgets flowing.
The political parties in the NT are almost like cults. To fix the situation you'd have to revisit the Self Government (NT) Act of 1978 plus the Aboriginal Land Rights Act of 1976 because those very weird pieces of legislation created the very weird situation you see. That's why Spanian looks confused at the end and can't understand what is going on.@@arokh72

As a Territorian since mid 90s and raised in Sydney (inner city, inner west areas) I have experienced both worlds. I actually feel safer in Sydney tbh. Also as an Aboriginal woman, I've hung around Redfern, Glebe as a teen. But I have to say nothing compares to Karama and other areas. The anxiety I get to just go to karama shops for supplies, I won't let my adult children go there even in daylight hours unless I'm with them. Thank you for scratching the surface of what Darwin has become. A mix of intergenerational trauma, displacement, substance and alcohol addiction. It's heartbreaking to see and hear what happens here everyday. I've been watching your hood docos before you came to Darwin and you are brave. Raw and honest. Well done 👏

I'm originally from Adelaide but was posted in Darwin in the Army in the early 90s and I loved it up there but it has definitely changed since those days. I'm in rural Vic nowadays and unfortunately Ice had made myself and everyone edgey becoming paranoid of strangers.

As a former Darwin resident of 17 years I can honestly say that you got a great insight into the insane lives of some people that exist in Darwin and Palmerston. I say exist because it ain’t living. Those lads who took you around deserve a lot of credit for their openness and willingness to highlight their own community and the struggles they face. That encounter at the end with the indigenous woman was just gold. Surprised she didn’t hit ya up for a smoke or a dollar. You are doing a fantastic job with your series. The fact that you are not a journalist and are just curious means that your not blinkered and trying to present a biased perspective. Just keep telling the stories as they roll out.

I never lived in the CBD or visited very often but when I did it was pretty much the same thing that is in this video.

I grew up in Karama 35 years ago… we used to get broken into every 3 months back then. Our dog was baited. Thats why people are desensitised, it’s been happening for decades.
I have some beautiful friends still there but I have a love/hate relationship with Darwin.
You should check out Tennant creek. It makes Karama and Alice look like paradise. Seriously. The rest of Australia needs to see it.

The way the local boys explain the alcohol bans and police cameras so flippantly because they expect him to know what those are as it’s so normal to them is wild. I’ve lived in Aus my whole life and didn’t know NT was like this!! 😢
It's normal here. It helps a little but barely. Most of the incidents are either related to drugs or alcohol or kids so at times they really don't care about the cameras.
Everyone I know has either been broken into or almost broken into at least a couple of times. Always kids covering their faces, or finding a way to turn off cameras/lights.
The worst part is once they're caught, it's not very often anything serious happens to them. They end up right back on the street having learned nothing and just do it again.
Because our media has a black out on this type of thing. I watch mainstream news and its all about a stabbing in Sydney or a car chase in Melbourne we get no coverage. I bet you didn't even hear about Declan Laverty how was a 19 year old working in a liquor store and stabbed to death while working, the said thing is his attacker had attempted the same thing only a few hours early and had a wrap sheet longer than your arm. The deaths up here are terrifying, like the poor fella who was stabbed and had his head bashed in during a home Invasion. We are scared to death and what is scarier is the age of kids roaming the streets with knives. They get picked up from a violent crime, but dropped back home becaise they are under the age of consent. In this fella's Palmerston video one of the kids talks about a rapper, this rapper had a very violent past and ended up been killed in a stolen car, sad yes but what they didn't mention was the other kids in the car trried to beat up and steal a good Samaritan's car who stopped to help them. Not to mention the violent crime these kids committed leading up to the accident. The kids have not repercussion and go straight back out and do it all over again.
Most Australian have no idea what goes on outside of the cities. Wild shit goes down in communities that never gets reported on. People don't believe the stories I tell them because they are all deluded with their happy little city life bubble.

I look intelligent and friendly, so people in Alice and Darwin will kindly warn me to watch my step and my stuff. All these awful stories going on are concentrated in places remote from where most people live. Rather than city folks being in a bubble, they're living mainstream life and it's the far-flung places being ravaged by ice and grog that are bubbles.

That was intense. There is a sense of hopelessness in this place that you don't see in a lot of other hoods. Saying it is an open air jail isn't a stretch when you see that the government locks alleyways and stamps your house with alcohol bans. Eye opening stuff.
With all those stories I can see why they are locked down, though it's hard to say if it is helping or just making it worse.

This is the 2nd VLOG I have watched. 1st one was Mt. Druitt and as those local crew mentioned it is worse up there in Karama and Litchy, etc. I wanted to watch this considering I lived up there. Thanks, Spanian for going deep into the Darwin hood and literally vlogging what would almost be considered a documentary.
As someone who is born and raised in Darwin, this place has changed dramatically. The last breakdown hit hard and gave me shivers. It really is sad to see how much this once amazing place has gone downhill. Alcohol is such a massive problem up here and it is everywhere. I used to live in the Narrows growing up and knew not to go to the flats there. I once had to deliver junk mail and never returned.
Now I have a family this is the last place I want my kids to grow up. The shit we witness every single day from the humbugging at shop and fronts and petrol stations to the drunks stumbling around and arguing, fighting and swearing it’s disgusting. It used to be a safe community and now everyone has big fences, big dogs and are just sick and tired of the constant break ins and theft. We are done and leaving at our earliest convenience.
Thank you for coming here are giving the rest of the world an insight into how bad this place has really become.

Speed and alcahol can be a community destroyer just like crack...more specifically meth the smokeable version off speed as you need more n more like crack now imagine that mindset but able too go for days n weeks no sleep but wanting more then throw alcahol into the mix too completely break down any fear off doing something wrong too get another fix so bugalarys n robbing places for another fix with the alcahol in you aswell you don't care about getting caught or injuring yourself or repercussions ..the suicides I imagine are from trauma or opiates or both.. or more a lack off opiates is what drives people too end it when they going through constant withdrawl it's horrible really soul destroying and in the end you just can't face another withdrawl and you got no hope n situation is hopeless...why I think some stuff should be legalised for sure ..alcahol you should have too do some type monitoring course with other people n see how you react on the drink...coz some folk are fine won't harm anybody even if juiced up too the gills on booze but other people they don't react the same and they can't hide it you can see the people who shouldn't drink...cheers

I flew into darwin in 2013 and within an hour of being there some a group of kids had a massive knife/machete fight and the cops sat there and watched these 20+ kids chase each other screaming and one kid was hacked into with a machete to the point his hand was dangling off, then the darwin tourist bus pulled up, a nice welcome to darwin

I was born in Darwin in the 80's, lived in Malak. There was one of those laneways alongside our house, it's crazy to see them with gates and locks. Even back then you couldn't leave anything out or it would be stolen, fishing rods, bikes etc.

I used to live in Darwin for 8 years. Completely changed the way I see Australia. Also did construction work in a few communities like Maningrida and Milikapiti. That's where you can see the real shit, the side of Australia that many have no idea about. The real wild west. It's a complex, heartbreaking situation. Awesome video!

I live in Darwin with my wife and child. I used to live in Brissy but the Territory is different. The sheer rate of crime is unbelievable. And it’s not something you just read about in the news - you will see it on the way to work, after footy training, doing your groceries, going out to town - everywhere. And we’re not talking about organised crime where guys wear nice suits and scheme. It is, unfortunately, aboriginals who are the victims of intergenerational trauma, abuse, and substance abuse who bring violence to other Territorians every single day. My only disappointment is Spanian couldn’t cover Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Katherine or Wadeye where, truly, it’s even worse.

I’m an aboriginal who grew up privileged in Melbourne and been to Darwin and Arnhem Land to visit. The people up there have no hope and treated like animals. The alcoholism and drug abuse and generational trauma is all they know. The situation seems helpless to get to a point where the local kids have hope and a pathway to being able to change their circumstances. But you Spanian are doing a great job bringing awareness to how bad it is when no other platform will show it. So sad to see but awareness is the first step. Respect bruh.

I’m Darwin born and bred and cuzzy, you even walked down my street in Malak…shit was hektic when I was growing up there…went to Sanderson high school and it was just wild. You have to be street smart in the NT and even that’s not enough…

I live here in Darwin. And this side of it is pretty invisible to me. I see the thefts from stores and ram raids of course, but being an adult is almost like living in a separate dimension to all of this. I'm invisible to them and I don't see them as a threat to me. But I appreciate it being put front and centre, good work mate.
Yeah that’s a good point, I am usually left alone on the buses and at the interchange. The dramas usually amongst the kids themselves. So many kids not going to school out of fear of being bashed.. Sadly we need the security, the police are stretched thin. I may be a bit desensitised. You know though when you need to be on alert and when you don’t.

The international hoods are good but linking up with aussies that live in the suburbs your visiting makes it much better cause you hear the stories and understand how bad it actually is. Im sure the lads in those hoods in barca amsterdam and everywhere else would have crazy stories to tell but harder to link up with them and know of their legit
I spent 15-17yrs old living on the streets in Dandenong, in the mid 80’s. Times are tough out there, but ya get ta know the real world. Helps in the bigger picture if ya can get out the other side. 55 yrs old,3 kids,4 grandkids, and don’t owe nothing. Keep ya heads on ya future.❤ y’all

I grew up at Litchies, which was once a beautiful place to live. My mum lived there two months shy of thirty years right next to that laneway. She couldn't take it anymore and had to move. To see that complex now brings tears to my eyes.

@@doingadlay to grow up at Litchies? As a kid, it was awesome and a lot different to what you see in this video. It was clean, well maintained and everyone was friendly. I made lifelong friends there (I lived there from 6yrs to 27yrs with my own family )and can remember playing in most of the areas shown. There were two different types of playgrounds over the years but housing took them out because they got damaged beyond repair. There were African Mahogany trees in the park that my friends and I would climb but like mentioned, were chopped down because of the deaths that occurred.
As the years passed though, it got really bad. I was lucky enough to move out before it got as bad as it is today.
My mum is very old school and very stubborn which is why she lasted as long as she did.

I grew up in Darwin. (40yrs) Specifically Malak and karama. Riding around those areas as a kid, Malak shops especially. It was never that bad in the 80s, it peaked in the 90s early 2000s. It's a bit funny how the lads never mentioned the KGB Karama Ghetto Boyz or Star7*, they were the boys that literally put Karama and Malak in the spot light. It was basically their kids that blew up into wanna be gangsters and hoodlums that were the troubled youth in the 2000s. They were the little punks you would have to pull into line if you saw them at the shops acting up. Call em out saying I know your parent/s. I owned a house in karama(koolinda Cres literally exactly where you were walking down.)and palmerslum, and I tell you right now going back to Karama every now and again I would be on edge more then going to the shops at palmy. Yes it got wild some nights. Parties getting gate crashed spill out onto the street, fights erupt bottles thrown and shit got real. Cops etc etc. Usually a beef would continue from that fight and carry on until someone was got. It's sad to see it go to shit, we(my family) left in 2018. We wanted to make sure our children have the better setting growing up then Darwin. Unfortunately it's sad to say that I love Darwin and it was home growing up, but it change so much from when I was a kid. Growing up Darwin was laid back and chill, go fishing, hunting and 4wding. It's still does happen as I have still have mates that live up there. Even one that lives in the Malak flats exactly where you were near the start. Broken into more times then he can remember, has had his house stripped from little shits, dog stolen and cars smashed etc. There is no silver bullet for Darwins problems, but the alcohol is it's biggest followed by ice. It's has gotten to the point of people know if you ignore the problem it's less of a problem. You give any attention to the problem and it becomes more, as it is heightened by the acknowledgement that it exists. I have worked in remote communities all over the Northern Territory and have seen that it's just as worse if not worser. Petrol sniffing in communities is atrocious, kids as young as 8-10 getting possessed from inhaling petrol, blood curdling screaming running around at the schools until 5am. When the kids are young they are not taught the knowledge that you can't just take whatever you want whenever you want and get upset when some tries to stop you. If you give them some they want more and they will demand it or they will take it whichever way they want. When grown, they still know no difference. So they keep coming back because the know it's not that bad if you get caught. But if you do, you get to go to jail and get fed and clothed for a few months. So it's not really a bad deal. Those who get housing in the city don't intentionally want the other family members to come to the house but they do and it becomes more of a problem. Alcohol abuse followed by violence and then death. Happens alot more the shown, and usually gets put down as DV and then pushed under the rug until someone dies. You see that this gets repeated over generations. Very sad scenario. Nothing has changed over the years except that those who choose to live in Darwin just put up with it or leave. I try and explain Southerners what Darwin is like and they think I'm making it up. Yes it's a massively different vibe of people that are just fed up with the shit. People see how much money gets poured into wasted efforts to curve the problems but yet no results have come from these ventures. Ahhhh this comment is becoming to political. I went to Darwin back in October 2023 and it's like I stepped into a different country. I started scratching my head why there was 3 x security guards at all time outside a Woolies and literally 5 minutes later, a man has stolen groceries inside a pram. He didn't even bother hiding it and just walked straight out, swore at staff who told him to go back and threatened to stab them. This was late afternoon when the sun was still up and there children with their parents just doing a grocery run. Weirdest thing was no one reacted, like it was a daily occurence.
Mad respect to the people who are actually trying to change their situation and work a proper job.
I’ve lived in Darwin for 15 years. We are totally desensitised to it all. I often have to call the police because I’m walking into the grocery store or at a cafe and witness women getting punched in the face, bottled or dragged down the street by their hair. The victim never presses charges and the cycle of abuse doesn’t end until one of them is dead, usually the women.
We have to turn our emotions off to a certain extent to be able to tolerate living here amongst the carnage.
there in lies the problem. Calling police will only ever make a situation worse. Time to man up and bite down on the lip . Id be scared and hesitant but better off dealing with the women beaters by yourself than calling the cops.
Make your community safer. Dont call thugs in uniforms

A lot of the time locals ignore it all and don’t even call the police. But ignoring it is worse… because it escalates and someone could get killed.

The tenant has to request the ARP signs on the houses to ban the drinking. The tenants normally are people who struggle with managing their visitors from out of town. The Government cannot just put the sign up.
The public housing also have their own security, they are called Public Housing Safety Officers. They try to assist give the tenants as much peace from the visitors as possible.

@@Prettynoes a lot of the tenants have serious health conditions and require renal treatments, all they want is to be left alone and have no humbug from family in communities.
More needs to be done to get the visitors to return to their communities.
NT Police and other orgs can apply to have a place declared once they have attended enough calls to the premise relating to alcohol harm. Its not just voluntary. The federal gov even declare entire communities alcohol free.

The crime and violence in the indeginious community is hidden and downplayed from the rest of Australia. Unless you know someone from there, you don't know about it. My mate is a cop that was in Darwin then Alice Springs and what she has told me of the violence domestic and public, the drinking and the crime in the Indeginious community is just insane and needs to be seen to be believed!
it's an almost unknown fact that the skeletal remains of aboriginal women from pre-colonial times almost all show signs of blunt head trauma. domestic violence and violence against women has been rife among aboriginals before alcohol and colonisation. culture is downstream of genetics.

I lived in SW Sydney in the 90s, lived in Airds, then moved to Darwin in mid 2000s. Lived in one of the streets shown here for my first 18 months. Holy shit! Even after Airds this place was just insane.
