After a number of young people lost their lives in the borough, which has been badly affected by postcode gang wars, he’s giving out free memberships to those caught up in serious violence. He has big plans for the gym to be a safe space where young people can rehabilitate and focus on improving their physical and mental health. The Guardian follows Raheel as he mentors the next generation and works with activists from around London to reduce the number of knives on the capital’s streets.

@you hev squirrel I do not believe someone have to be a criminal to become a Raheel. I believe Raheel was a man with a mission in long destination but in middle of the journey he was gone some wrong miles before before back on the right direction. At the end, we must rebuild our society with knowledge, respect with an effective plan then will not see often criminal in the society.
He’s a decent fella . The government should support him as he’s respected and has changed his life and now helps others . The community needs men like this to stop the mindless violence .
Don't leave it up to the government to send out a nasty tax man to rob Peter in order to give to Paul ... instead allow citizens who can and want to give to him directly. Then you also save money on hiring bureaucrats and reduce the nanny state while lessening crime :)

That’s not the issue, there’s violence in every major city in the world. It’s a problem with poverty
Plenty of middle and upper class white people watch violent movies, listen to rap, etc. without incident. Replies like yours just show how out of touch you are with terms like "cool dude culture" and blaming media instead of acknowledging economic and social issues.
Im not gonna lie, I am 30 next year, and the things I have seen and experienced growing up in London means that i would not want to raise a child in London, real talks, if i ever have a child i am getting a place far away from here

He is right about Tower Blocks because I was born and bred and still live unfortunately in Canning Town here in Newham but our Rubbish Mayor seems to be Obsessed in allowing Blocks of Flats after Flats in every spare piece of ground with NO infrastructure at all.

We absolutely need a form of national service. I don’t mean military but service to the country or community. Learn skills and discipline. Also these kids are mostly from unemployed single parents. We need to return to pushing family values as that’s what’s best for everyone.

I’ve grown up in Newham and can’t lie it’s changed hella it’s always been active for crime what not but there’s way too many young people loosing lives right now.. mayor needs to do something for the youth as it’s only gonna get worse.. people carry weapons for protection of the own lives as they don’t know if they gonna come back home today. And that’s the truth..

Newham has always been 'rough' I think due to poverty in that area, even the Westfield hasn't saved it. There is great community spirit in green street but just not enough for the young generation.. Example - reinstate youth clubs. Fitness club /gyms are ok but not appealing to the masses. The youths hang around bus shelters and think up stupid ideas about post codes etc and carry around weapons which is what cowards do. The government needs to tackle the drugs issue too. Let doctors supply alternatives and monitor them - that will instantly get rid of the pushers. Wonder why these simple options aren't being activated? 🤔
Exactly. Also make some activities cheaper if not free. ie one free swimming session a month from kids in certain postcodes or something. Getting the kids active is one way.

Im from newham and been on these roads shown on video all my life. I turned 30 with a troubled past. There is no youth programmes no support for people trying to get with life legally. I have strong faith so even though there is money on streets but my heart dont allow me to destroy someone else life for mine. I want to work legally and earn an honest living but there is nothing out here for people like me and there is millions of us who want to make that transition. There isnt even a place we can hang out to free our mind. We are all sufferring in silence but life goes on

There were cuttings and stabbings but nowadays it's just gone crazy.

South London gang violence peaked around the early to late 2000s(one of the reasons due to the peckham-deptford-brixton beef)
East London id say has been worser for the past 12 years
