I married a scouser 11 years ago and moved to Liverpool from Bournemouth 6 years ago. It is the best thing I ever did. My three kids are scousers, the people in Liverpool are hard working people who would do anything for their own. They really are the salt of the Earth. Amazing people.

@@filipepedro8272 not at all. You are obviously one of those people that has never visited Liverpool and believes the words of hear say. That’s ok, you stay in your little bubble. Remember this though. If you were in trouble or needed help could you knock on a strangers house in your community and ask for help and be welcomed with open arms? Here in Liverpool I would be, through my experience in Bournemouth you would be told to get lost and the Police called.

As a student living in Huddersfield, this is really important to watch. I hadn't considered how where I live affects the community I live in before, but this has really given me something to think about. Essential viewing for any students renting in an urban area like this

    • @stuartsaint4581

Exactly, students need to be aware of how they fit into the wider effects on a local community, but residents sometimes need to do some work to understand that the students are as exploited as they are. These people in Liverpool seem to have struck the right balance, good luck in Huddersfield!

As a student who used to live in Kenny Fields, and lived opposite the Community Centre/Social Club, this has really warmed my heart. I never thought at the time to pop in but now living as an adult in L8 (where it’s a pretty similar trajectory) rather than be selfish, you want to give back to the community who’ve lived here for years. L7 forever ❤️

I was a student in Liverpool for 4 years, 1 of which I lived in Kenny Fields and another 2 further down into Kensington. I always speak so positively of Kenny when I reminisce about it even though it has a bad reputation. For all of the bad things that get said about Kensington, that was never my experience. People were warm, friendly and welcoming, I also had a great relationship with the expat families and communities on my street off Kensington high street, all the kids would know your name as they played in the street and begged you to let them clean your car. The can-do spirit of the people was inspiring and it had a very optimistic vibe about the place, even though they're clearly forgotten about by local powers.
The upkeep and waste-disposal was catastrophic by the council, they'd leave alleys with inch-thick, matted waste on the ground which was a breeding ground for rats and insects. On numerous occasions they'd refuse to collect the waste from the alleys for a week because of the state of it. Roads when I was there were more pothole than they were actual road. It's such a shame because the houses are absolutely stunning, the parks like Newsham Park are gorgeous and if this area was in London it'd be some of the hottest property around, and council services would be shit-hot. Just another example of the North/South funding divide.
The continuing privatisation/commercialisation of student accommodation commodifies these small communities, and means that students can no longer afford to stay in student-specific accommodation so we had no choice but to favour these neighbourhoods close to the university campus. It was clearly a problem when I was a student and is obviously getting worse. Not to say that we didn't also shop at local corner shops, integrate with neighbours and help out where we could, but the scale of it is clearly destroying the community that preceded us. We'd always get flyers through the door offering double market-value for the house from people wanting to turn the whole area into HMOs, as they must prove to be an absolute cash cow for landlords, all the while leaving residents with fewer affordable housing options and fragmenting the community further.
The area was clearly well planned when it was built as there are so many little areas such as the one shown in the film that used to be nice little green spaces or parks, and now they're fenced off, locked up, and are full of garbage. The community centre always gave me a little smile as I'd walk past because it was obviously an intrinsic, well looked after part of the community, and to find out that the same people want to open up the breadth of their power is only a good thing. Give these people a lease, give them their community trust and for the love of god can a kitchen chain please sponsor a renovation for them.
Vive la Kenny, and much love for Liverpool from South Yorkshire.

I'm from Sheffield, and I lived in Manchester... THIS was what went on in the mid-1990s as well. And yes, it can uplift an area, but sustainability is also important too ? Of course, UK being the UK, we all fight for resources, and things... and then to turn things round. It's all there... Liverpool also used to have a lot of civil service depts and research in Universities as well. Their NHS hospital was top notch. And then Home Office used to be a big presence there. And that was also how the Chinatown and overseas dispora was created... I was raised in Liverpool before my mother moved me to a safer place to Sheffield to be nearer to her siblings... (for safety). The number of times that our take-away was knocked and broken into... Well.. it would raise questions why anyone would live there. When we were part of the EU as a block, Liverpool was one of the city that got a lot of investments and money, and that created their football team as well. And they tried very hard to entice HK citizens to come and live there and to infest. Well.. those who ran away... from harm, would not be the same investors, unfortunately.... Some random other chinese, from other SE Asian dispora of course fill in those gaps. When you walk away from a hurtful place.. You never turn back that clock. Or go back there. Again.

Like Liverpool, most people I have met are nice - Liverpool has a good vibe about it. There will always be rich and poor but we should all help each other regardless. The idea that hotels, student halls and other large corporations encroaching and wiping out communities is seen as progress seems so inevitable and depressing. These people and communities deserve honest consideration and actual support, but they don't get it. A sense of community seems to have been lost in so many ways over the last 10/15 years. I remember when we had a bakery in our high street and people would say hello to one another and now we just have a sterile Tesco that dominates the most localised economy, and people's demeanour is to actively not make eye contact and have a sense of mistrust for your neighbour. I'm 28, but I understand reading this would easily seem like I'm 30 years older.

Here in Plymouth I live close to the university…. Student housing is everywhere- but it came existence _after_ key industries had closed or moved elsewhere - employers such as the two local hospitals, the dairy and the docks. The hospitals are now gone and replaced by a centralised one out of the main city area, the dairy closed down and was demolished and the docks now play host to pleasure boats rather than trading vessels. This is why most of the older houses here are now subdivided into flats for students.

I live a mile away from Londons kensington High St. I grew up and lived a mile away from Liverpools Kensington, in the next street to Warren Bradley, liverpool's ex council leader, not far from Wavertree Rd. Wavertree Rd has gone the same.
