I recently acquired RE4 on steam for only 5$ when the series was on sale in the build up to the 3 remake, and it is definitely one of my favorite games now.
It really does transcend its controls. They've aged a bit, but you can tell that the whole game was built around them and not the other way around. That's what makes RE4 phenomenal in my book. Few games feel like the controls were crafted exclusively for them.
resident evil 4 was the very first PS2 game ive ever played (alongside time crisis 2, GTA VC, DBZ budokai 2 and terminator 2) and to this day i can still fully replay the game from start to finish and have alot of fun in doing so. its amazing how strong the replay value of the game is
Yeah the first is Resident Evil 4 on GameCube and Wii version because it got the good graphics. So the Wii adding the PS2 exclusive that the GameCube got axe on extra features.
Same here. Made her somewhat likeable. Only like 5% though. But once you figure out you can hide her in dumpsters and hide her in safer places until you clear a room of enemies, she becomes more manageable, and also, saving maybe one or 2 Green + Yellow Herbs for her, so her health goes up, and so she doesn't die in, like, 2 hits, because she just stands there, taking hits from the ganados, WITHOUT moving occasionally, and there's like, several of them. It gets annoying sometimes. But when you start slowly upgrading both yours and her health, she slowly starts becoming less and less of a pain in my ass, and I can enjoy the game the way God intended us to, by upgrading my weapons, saving the ammo, selling worthless guns, and treasures, and saving up money for the upgrades. And I managed to beat every boss without using the free Rocket Launcher, even Salazar. Well, I mean you absolutely need to destroy Saddler with the Rocket Launcher (Special), but that's RE tradition. And I managed to get almost every upgrade for the Red9, the 223. Semi-Auto Rifle, and the TMP, and I fully upgraded my character's health, and Ashley's in one playthrough, but there's so much to see and do, even when the game's "over", it's never over. I still had to upgrade the Killer7, the Striker shotgun, and I still had the extra Rocket Launcher I wasted 30,000 pesetas on, to beat Salazar with, which I never used. So, I kept both Rocket Launchers, the one you use to beat Saddler, and the one I bought. But after you kill Saddler, with it, you lose the Rocket Launcher (Special). There's so much stuff to do in this game, I love it, even organizing your menu is fun. They made a game, where organizing your menu is something that's fun to do. Never thought that would happen. Played through RE4 at least 4 times now. The first time was on the GC back when it first came out, never beat it, because of the Salazar boss fight, the 2nd time, being the Wii Edition, that's the best one(at least, until I got to the PS4 version), and where I beat RE4 the first time. Then, I played it on the PS4, beat it twice. Sorry for the rant, but like Johnny, I love this game, and this series. This isn't the game that made me an RE fan, RE2 was, but both RE2 and RE4 made Leon my favorite RE character. Leon Scott Kennedy, being in RE4, was what made me want to buy it in the first place. Again, sorry for the rants. I just want to play this game on anything and everything(except maybe the mobile versions or the Zeebo version),until the end of time, but on every OTHER console, toaster, fridge, freezer, microwave, handheld, lamp, wall, window, curtain, closet door, regular door, front door, garage door, bathroom door, and backpack, I'll gladly try and play RE4 on those. Even the remake, as long as they don't fuck it up, or take away anything that made RE4 good in the first place... but take out Assignment Ada though. That sucked.
I remember one of my friends played it through recently and streamed it to Discord. Those sessions me and my friends had watching him play were some of the most fun I've had a long time. Going nuts over Leon's goon destroying roundhouse kick, completely losing it at the Indiana Jones boulder chase, and screaming at him on how to solve the sliding block puzzle before collectively facepalming once we realized what the solution was. God, that was a blast.
@Linda Niemkiewicz It's basically like Skype, except better in literally every way. You can create your own discord servers where you invite people, and they can access the chat and messages whenever they feel like. It's like a phone call, text message, and video chat wrapped in one package. And you can stream on it.

@@alanherbethe7338 Yeah, but we all prefer the fixed dialogue of the later releases. "I was a cop, but only for a day... Got myself involved in the incident in Raccoon City on my first day on the job".
46:55 Wanted to come back to this part of the review specifically. As of March 2023, RE4 Remake is incredible. Blends the action and campy nature of RE4 with the atmosphere and scariness of RE2 Remake. What it loses in some aspects it gains in others. And it’s still a credit to OG RE4 that even with how great the remake is, the original game is still equally as viable to play. A true 1a to 1b situation here.
45:29 Was that an unintentional Caddicarus reference? Because he says the same thing in the same way for Crash 3. First thing I thought of when I heard that.
I looked up some of the Spanish translations. Kind of wish I didn't because it takes away from the game somehow imo, knowing what they are actually saying.
@@wakyblarg To me (a fluent spanish speaker since ever) the fact that they outright tell you that they are behind you makes it all the more memorable. Well, that and their mexican accent in the game that supposedly takes place in Spain.
"Hijo'e puta" I'm Latino, and hearing those insults on screen with my friends was a huge deal back then. If I'm not mistaken, actual Spaniards got very offended because they used Latin American actors for their "Spanish" voices, and it ended up sounding like a parody of their Spanish accent.
Think they’re making it an FPS. Only reason I say that is cause I saw an article about Resident Evil: “VIllage” with that RE4 village as background art.
I always found ammo plentiful in the general world 🤷🏿♀️ that and I made good use of the knife wherever possible since the melee could be great for crowd control
In a way he does. If you have your gun empty before you see him and he has a ammo upgrade for that gun, if you buy it you essentially get a new clip which means you did buy ammo
This was my first introduction to Resident Evil. I was introduced when my family got a Wii for Holiday 2006. We didn't have much to play, we had Wii play, Wii Sports, and Sonic and the Secret Rings (don't worry, I had an original Xbox and 360 so I still had other things to play). I didn't play the game often due to the motion controls. A few years later, my brother got Resident Evil 5 on the 360. Since the game had two player Split-Screen. I was able to play the game due to the traditional control scheme and I was able to beat it. After that, I became a fan of the series.
Same here, John. I lost count of how many times I've played this since my brother showed me it on his PS2, though that didn't stop him from getting the other versions. The Wii version, I'd definitely say is the version to play if you have the option to do so. The Handcannon is my personal favorite of the special weapons since I was the one to unlock it out of the three of us. What was weird though, the only map they didn't have five stars on was the village with Leon. It took me a bit, but I managed to do it. While Outbreak was the gateway for me, RE4 is just another reason why I'm a fan of the series. I can go back to these two anytime and it'll be a great time.
I was watching this till min 11 and was like “we still didn’t get into the game yet”, then I saw the video length, HOLY NINJA BALLS. I’m not complaining tho, needed my Johnny fix during this quarantine, thank you Johnny. Like the jerry shirt.
I’ve watched this video about 8 times now and it still doesn’t get old. I think I can call this Johnny’s second best review with the best being Sonic 06. Not just for the length but the amount of time Johnny put into the video itself and you can tell he was not only looking forward to doing this but he actively enjoyed his time playing, scripting, and editing all of this.
RE4 was lovingly crafted and I truly wonder if Capcom even has the time to put that much effort into a single game in today's era. It's not just a great video game, it's an exceptional video game. They are better off doing a remaster. I have serious doubts if they *(or anyone for that matter)* could do a proper remake. It's a game first and foremost meant to thrill from encounter to encounter with no regards to realism, it's all there to be fun. Very, very, few developers design an entire game this way. And I have yet to see a third person shooter do something like this since.
I feel the problem with a remake of it is they'll give it moderrn controls. The tank controls of RE4 are what made it so nervewracking. Combined with the low amount of available ammo, you had to make every shot really count, aim perfectly at their heads. No other game has ever made every shot feel so important, made ever bullet feel so powerful and like it counts. If they put modern controls on it it might ruin it and remove all of the horror aspect. I dunno, maybe some people would prefer that, and then for those of us who don't we can just carry on playing the original versions.
Ruben Baeza This one comment showcases the only MGS game you’ve played is 5. Which is a great game, but your comparison doesn’t make sense. Plus the stiffness is intentional in order for it to be more nerve racking standing still to shoot. Though it isn’t even that bad.
Modern games are all rushed out and craftmenship doesn't even exist in 2020. If RE 4 was filet mignon from a 5 star restaurant, most new games are McDonalds cheeseburgers
According to the wiki, Jack Krauser also appears in one of the railgun shooter games, Darkside Chronicles and Umbrella Chronicles. In an exclusive story to one of those games which is backstory showing his betrayal to Leon and when he and him worked together.
If you didn't know: On the Wii version of RE4 you can actually just use a gamecube controller. I'm not kidding. Just plug it in and it'll work perfectly
@@MoeRon004 on the box art it doesn't state that you can plug in a gamecube controller but I tried it out and could play an enhanced version of RE4 with a GC controller.
Ahhh man, see I just finished this game for the first time recently. I finished 5 and 6 before this, I just couldn't do it. It was a slog to me, and this is coming from someone who loves Remake 2, OG 3, 6 and Remake 1. I don't know what it is. But hearing the sheer joy in Jon's voice just brings a smile to my face.
I've been waiting for this. And Re4 introduced me to resident evil as well and I really love it. Not to mention, I was introduced to it just last year, and then I was hooked and got re2 remake, then re5, re6, re7, and re3r. And I can't get enough of Mr. X and his trenchcoat, both 98 and remake. And I just love some of the enemies in this game; Dr. Salvador, Garrador, Verdugo, Regenerator, Super Salvador. And the sound is so good, I especially like the sounds Garrador, J.J. and Super Salvador share and the Regenerators breathing. And the soundtrack... *moist* Also, why couldn't the devs have made Luis a playable character in the Mercenaries? He's clearly built for it.
I remember watching the 100% stream last year during quarantine and my god, that livestream and this review really made said quarantine much more tolerable. Thank you for being amazing for all these years, Johnny.

God bless and I hope to meet you and Elliot one day. -Daniel Kaput
Honestly I never really had much of an issue with Ashley, I liked that I could tell her to stay or follow, duck if you ever point a gun at her, plus the dumpsters made it so you didn't have to worry about her at all, typically escort missions are annoying as fuck, but with her I barely noticed or changed how I played, the only issue I have with her isn't even her programming, it was when she coughed up blood, Leon asked if she was ok and she just runs away saying leave me alone, then gets captured, but seriously why the fuck would that be her reaction? That was so out of no where, if you were being rescued by some badass and they ask if you're ok when you cough up blood, why on earth would you run away from them????
Fun Fact about Leon's jacket in RE4. It's meant as a sort of jab at Square Enix because in Kingdom Hearts, Squall goes by the name "Leon". You lose the jacket fairly early in the game and never get it back, and that's entirely on purpose. The design of the jacket is similar to Squall's, even.

It really does transcend its controls. They've aged a bit, but you can tell that the whole game was built around them and not the other way around. That's what makes RE4 phenomenal in my book. Few games feel like the controls were crafted exclusively for them.
resident evil 4 was the very first PS2 game ive ever played (alongside time crisis 2, GTA VC, DBZ budokai 2 and terminator 2)
and to this day i can still fully replay the game from start to finish and have alot of fun in doing so.
its amazing how strong the replay value of the game is
Yeah the first is Resident Evil 4 on GameCube and Wii version because it got the good graphics. So the Wii adding the PS2 exclusive that the GameCube got axe on extra features.

16:33 I always liked the way Ashley cheered for you in that section

If Resident Evil 4 keeps getting re-releases like this, it's a good sign that it's a timeless classic.
That, or Capcom wants more money, I'll leave that to your imagination.
But with how long this was, I sincerely believe that now is a good time to take a break Johnny to focus on other games you want to give attention to.

Dude. I just wanna say thank you so much for this. This was the game that my father and I played together constantly. After he passed, I played these religiously growing up. These were some of my favorites, games I was WAY to young and terrified to play at the time and would just watch my dad play when I was a kid.

"¡Detras de ti, imbecil!" Most memorable line in the game, cuz they say it every 5 minutes. lol I love this game.
I looked up some of the Spanish translations. Kind of wish I didn't because it takes away from the game somehow imo, knowing what they are actually saying.
Spanish being my first language I already knew what they said
@@wakyblarg To me (a fluent spanish speaker since ever) the fact that they outright tell you that they are behind you makes it all the more memorable.
Well, that and their mexican accent in the game that supposedly takes place in Spain.
I can also understand the lines perfectly since i'm a spanish speaker too.
"Hijo'e puta"
I'm Latino, and hearing those insults on screen with my friends was a huge deal back then.
If I'm not mistaken, actual Spaniards got very offended because they used Latin American actors for their "Spanish" voices, and it ended up sounding like a parody of their Spanish accent.

Then you remember the merchant *doesn't sell ammo*
Maybe not directly, but you can always leave his place fully loaded on ammo thanks to the magic of upgrades.
Additionally, there is normally a good bit of ammunition that can be looted in the nearby safe area.
There's something sweet of hearing Johnny being so happy and invested in a fav. game of his.
Almost 1 hour!?! This has got to be Johnny's second longest review ever.

I could rave about this game for hours, but I think that statement sums it all up.
“Señor Palpatine” is the greatest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.
Johnny: Senior Palpatine.
Senior Palpatine: Yo soy el Senado.

You’re the reason I got into resident evil 4. Thank you so much for doing that.
I'm still playing RE4 and still don't know what the big deal is. It just feels like a stiffer metal gear game.
@@dangamer8884 but I dont like filet mignon
