Thanks for the quick and simple explanation, very swag. I’d like to say that there are a handful of relatively cheap stomp box tuners as well, starting at a price of about $30. I’ve never had one though so I couldn’t vouch for how accurate they are but I’m sure they’re decent, compared to spending like $100 on boss pedal tuners.
That's true however the construction of these cheaper units are not great and often use much more breakable materials also accuracy is measured within cents so you will find that the specs for alot of these shows these not be as accurate as slightly more expensive models. I have tried many of these and if your on a severe budget then sure...but you could argue that this is one of the most important pedals on your board so why not go with something that gets the job done and will last.
I got a peterson strobo clip HD clip on Tuner a couple of years ago. It's not cheap, but it's definitely worth the money. I have a couple snark tuners, while not a precise as the peterson, they do a fine job.
Great tips, thank you. I have learned the string end-cutting method from Jens Krüger during the Krüger Brother Music Academy. I've called it to Krüger the string for many years. No more bloody fingertips! Fully agree your comments about tuners. I recently found a clip on tuner with rechargeable battery. With a power indicator built in you never run out of battery, which is usually when you need it the most.
Clip on is the best for me as I play acoustic most of the time but they can break like my "Tour Craft" did last night. To clip on there must be a hinge and a spring well my hinge broke and the spring went into orbit and I don't know where it landed. probably somewhere in Sydney Harbour. I'll go for the D'Addario you recommended when I replace the broken one. Thanks for the info'
Cheers David, That's what I try to achieve in all my Videos👍 feel free to browse my channel for my Guitar Tutorial Lessons (all quick and to the point with no filler)
I've been using my (2015) Snark SN-8 on my acoustic, electric & bass and I have the TC Polytune 3 on my pedalboard. I love & can highly recommend both. I even bought a hard case for my Snark. Great info presented here. oNe LovE from NYC
Hi Sam really love your channel I've learnt so much so quickly. A revelation I've bought a load of books and non have explained theory like you. Huge thanks . David
Hi When I click your link to buy Boss TU3 I see another pedal Boss TU3S. Which one shall I buy please. I learn so much from your channel and thank you all the effort that you put in to make your diagrams which makes learning so very easy.
I through a jacket in the washer forgetting the tuner was in one of the pockets, after taking it out, l put a blow dryer on it and it was back in action 😂
I agree with the value and convenience of a clip-on style tuner for an acoustic solo performer - but as a musician in a trio, I know how much they can conflict with each other when you're all trying to tune at once. That's the only reason I've gone to a floor tuner in this scenario.
The only way they would conflict is if you had a mic option within the clip on tuner. If the tuner is using the vibration of the instrument then it is highly unlikely to be affected by outside sources.
Most tuners have the option of an offset calibration; 440 or + or - to allow to tune to anything that deviates from non concert pitch. However if you are looking for the frequency read-out alongside the name of the note then you may have to search abit harder as this isn't a feature that is particularly useful so most tuner companies leave this out. I have seen this on occasion on a few cheap brandess clip on tuners and for sure on most app based tuners....and if you use any DAW then the tuners that come stock with any of these will most likely give you a frequency read out👍
The Boss TU-3 is really good for intonation. I used the boss for intonating my guitars for years! Obviously a strobe tuner will be better for intonation... its upto you!
Thanks for the video! I have that same clip-on tuner you recommend. Did you try one of those fancy polyphonic tuners? You can strum all the strings in one go and the tuner shows all the required tuning on the screen.
Hi Jason, yes I have tried one... it's a preference thing at this stage.. the biggest drawback to the polyphonic tuner is when using it live on acoustic guitar as I doubt the audience wants to hear all open strings played at once between songs...not a pleasant sound but still a great idea for a tuner👍
Are there any tuners out there that you can see in bright sunlight? Doing an outdoor gig at the weekend in bright sunlight I could not see any of my 3 tuners. Tried sunglasses but no good. Had to go back to basics and use my ears!
Hi Rob, There are a few that will work better than others for broad daylight visibility... First bit of advise though is to make sure you are using new batteries as the display will become dimmer as batteries get older. I have never had this issue with the eclipse mentioned in the video above and it's also very easy to direct the screen away from the sun. The Boss TU-3 has a daylight mode that increases the brightness of the screen if you want to go with a floor pedal (link in description) and if you are using an acoustic guitar outdoors you may find that a sound hole tuner is a great fix for your issue (fits inside the sound hole of the guitar) ... I will add a link to my recommended sound hole tuner in the description of this video. Hope this helps!
Yes it does....there is not a DADGAD setting for example but all tuners are designed to give you a visual display of the note you are playing so all tuners therfore will be able to account for alternate/drop tunings👍
Definitely go for a floor pedal.... I use the boss TU-3 for intonating my guitars👍 Or if you want to go really over the top then a Peterson strobe tuner.
Hi! Could you be more specific? if you mean could you set your intonation on a guitar using the clip-on tuner in this video then yes you could however I prefer to use a floor pedal like the BOSS TU3 also mentioned in this video. if you are asking whether you can adjust the tuning from 440hz to perhaps 432hz on the clip-on tuner then yes you can.
Yup very aware of this 🤣 the camera I used when filming this video had terrible auto focus, this meant I literally couldn't move without losing focus... the end result was interesting to say the least... Needless to say that soon after I upgraded my camera!
No probs! As they use the vibration through the body of the guitar after a note is played then they will work with anything you can clip them on to.... even unplugged! So definitely works with an electric👌
@@Samjamguitar thank you so much lol i also know that sounded like a dumb thing to say the reason i said it is cause i have a tuner that tells me when the string is tuned rather than the note played
I see! Yes you probably should upgrade to a tuner that displays the note being played for sure! Nearly all tuners do this also so you must have something quite basic or unusual?
Have you tried fender bullet tuner? Is the eclipse more accurate as with the fender one I find it doesn't register some times and slow especially the b string. The eclipse has this issue?
Many tuners have this issue....I have never had this issue with the eclipse... Something that can help with unresponsive tuners is to tune using 12th fret harmonics 👍
A combination of a camera with poor focusing capabilities that required me to stay perfectly motionless and the unintentional editing out of any blinking throughout the video resulted in a very AI-looking performanceI. I assure you that I am very much real... or am I???
All app based tuners use your phone's microphone so be sure to place your phone close to the sound source (close to the acoustic guitar sound hole or electric guitar amp) or the response time and accuracy will be poor. As for your issue with uninstalling, I'm afraid this is dependent on your Android or apple device so I cannot help with this but uninstalling apps is usually a very simple process. I would also just recommend buying the daddario eclipse clip on tuner...very inexpensive and much less frustrating than a phone app👍

Thanks for sharing! I can certainly vouch for both the snark and polytune... good tuners (I have links for both these in the description also)
I've definitely found that the Peterson headstock tuner to be the most accurate after using the Snark type for years and years...
It definitely is but not as user friendly for beginners!
To the point. Relevant for 2023 as well. Thanks a bunch.

Yes they work really well with electric guitars!
Ok thanks alot for your fast reply, I wasn't sure if clip on tuners where for just for acoustic guitar or not. I'm just new to playing guitar
No probs! As they use the vibration through the body of the guitar after a note is played then they will work with anything you can clip them on to.... even unplugged! So definitely works with an electric👌
How tf did this video come out 3 years ago but is written 2024 in the title
Because everything covered in the video is still relevant in 2024
Bluetooth and an earbud in one ear eliminates the issues you had with the online tuners.

Rotosound HT200 ??
I wouldn't recommend the HT200. The build quality isn't as good compared with many other clip-on tuners in the same price range.
I have a clip on and it shows a number when I tune it correctly like 6 mine did not come with a manual. Anyone know what the number means?

Stomp tuners you need to mute amp. Clip ons can tune when guitar is muted. No one wants to hear you tune. Do it in silence.🤐🍻
Stomp tuners such as the boss tu3 automatically mute the signal when activated
