Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Laser Code Issue Real OR Fake?

  • The Elijah Craig C923 was one of the best batches Heaven Hill has put out in a long time. BUT now people have found out there are two laser codes and A LOT OF THEM are saying they are different. Is ECBP c923 a23 better than laser code a22 or are they still the exact same?

    Thank you all for your interest in Heaven Hill. Please consider the information below an official statement from the company.
    The laser codes on the back of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof C923 denote the date the liquid was bottled. The liquid inside each bottle is 100% the same. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof bottling can be several days, but the liquid inside is from the exact same batch. The codes on the bottles denote: A23332346 - A-Line, on the 233rd Day in 2023 (August 21st) and A22330952 - A-Line on the 223rd Day in 2023 (August 11th).

    @Bourbon Junkies do you guys recall the "bad bottle" phenomenon that Russell's 13 batch 1 had when it was first released? I think you where pretty meh on it but tried another sample (Dan & Julie Likes?) and you thought it was fantastic. We didnt have the deep dive forensic analyais to check laser codes back then, so who knows what the deal was. But what these situations do offer us is opening a larger discussion on vatting/batching. We're not looking to burn any distillers at the stake but this would be a great learning experience on how they best try to manage many thousands lf gallons of bourbon into a final shelf ready product.
    Thanks again! Cheers.

    Here's the important question for me, sorry if it was addressed and I missed it, but were both bottles opened the same/similar amount of time, and have both been drank at the same rate since open. I did this comparison, and picked A23. The only real difference for me, of note, was one was a hair more ethanol forward. But, I'd expect that, since the A23 was opened a couple months earlier, and was 1/3 full compared to the A22, which was 1/2 full and not opened as long. I think the only fair way to do this comparison, would be to find 2 unopened bottles, and compare those. IMO

    Normal Elijah Craig small batch has 200 barrels dumped into the mixing tank for each batch. In comparison to a similar sized distillery, Jack Daniels VIP tour states that it dumps 175 to 200 barrels a batch for Old# 7 and each barrel has roughly 240 bottles in it. (UA-cam Tonights Poison-Jack Daniels VIP Distillery Tour minutes 34:35-35:10) 200 x 240= 48,000 bottles. Elijah Craig C923 is older, so the Angel's share reduces the amount of liquid. If we guess almost half of the liquid is gone, then there are around 24,000 bottles of E.C.C923. There is no problem for Heaven Hill to mix this amount. They have the largest toured distillery in the U.S. The questions are if the tank was mixed consistently? Has filtering issues? Or, any time differences being exposed to the air for the bottling? Even if these factors are relevant to any discrepancies people are tasting, Heaven Hill will never release this information. The only true way to solve this issue would be to do repeated TRUE scientific blind taste experiments and see if the results are reproduced by other groups. Whiskeytube is entertainment. People are talking and looking at each other when doing tastings. The Whiskeytubers would have to be separated from each other with A22 and A23 new bottles opened at the same time. Then the test would have to be repeated over and over on different days with the same level in the bottles. Not very entertaining for our modern short attention spans. Plus how many people have both bottles?

    I would be interested to see, if you had a hydrometer, the proofs of the A222 vs A223 to see how good their quality control is. I've seen many reviews and almost everyone says the A222 is more ethanol forward or alcohol forward. Wonder if there is also a proof difference besides flavor difference. I know the bottle says 133 proof and it has been approved by the TTB but interested in what the actual proof would be. Just curious....

    While I really like the video concept, truth be told, a sample size of 4 is not nearly enough to produce statistically significant results.
    Even if only 1/3 was the 23, it’s not significantly outside of random chance that everyone would pick that one.
    Another potential confounding factor is that if there is a taste difference between the codes, the fact that only one was the 23, and two were the 22, means the 23 might have stood out whereas the other two were repetitive and so felt more boring.
    Would have been better if you had two glasses of the 23 and two of the 22 so that was not a confounding factor.
    Another potential factor is the time the bottles have been open for. If the 23 had more time to breathe/open up in the bottle that could explain why it tasted better in this blind.

  • @sirjcc

    Would batch size is primarily based on mixing vessel size? Assuming that HH is not dumping partial barrels, and that they are dumping full barrels in their blending vats and are well mixed, then it would be very interesting to compare the mixing vat size to the overall C923 batch size. I would guess that the mixing vat is of smaller volume than the total batch size. I am also guessing that the approx 10 days between bottlings as provided by the laser codes, it is likely a result of different barrels that are blended for each bottling release date, thus resulting in the difference between A22 and A23. With that all said, I would expect HH to have as good of quality control as any other major distillery. However, as you guys know, quality control for most distilleries isnt exactly rocket science and taste profiles will vary. Additionally, given my own experience in other industries, there are ways to feed liquids from multiple other mixing vessels simultaneously and precisely to achieve blended batches that are much larger than any given mixing vat on hand. For example, HH could fill 3 separate mixing vessels, decide the ratio of the 3, and then feed portions of each into one mixing vessel, then bottle, then repeat, resulting in a final blend much larger than the final vat with great consistency. However,
    I am hesitant to believe that this type of blending would be occurring over such a long period of time at HH in this case. Any additional information or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

    • @jasono.1629
      @jasono.1629 6 місяців тому

      This is a great comment, cause I can see how a distiller could make all bottles be the exact same blend even with having to use multiple vessels. The process you described they may consider too costly to do, but now that the cats out of the bag on their lack of quality control, maybe they’ll start doing it that way.

    This video like his doesn't do anything to dispell the issue.
    With the reach of all the channels who have brought this up you could easily get many samples from several different serial numbers and then blind.
    The real issue is "reviewers" not having the stones to call out big brands.

    I meeeaaaannn... I guess we have to take you at your word that they taste very similar, but the way the video was edited showing people's reactions and the fact that all of the people who did it blind chose A23... seems like that's better whisky. Maybe they are pretty close, but it seems to me that those are enough different when 4/4 blind tasters prefer one over the other. Sean's result speaks to palette fatigue where too much of similar flavors tends to make the differences blend together... but he still had a strong preference for his first pour over his last regardless of which direction he tasted.

    • @BourbonJunkies
      @BourbonJunkies  6 місяців тому +9

      Also take into consideration everyone had two glasses that were the same and nobody figured that out while tasting lol. That being said everyone picking a23 lends to it being better. How much better? I'd say minimally.

    • @RocketSauce666
      @RocketSauce666 5 місяців тому

      @@BourbonJunkies - that's fair, but wouldn't what you shared above (e.g. that no one caught on to them being the same) indicate that there is a meaningful difference? Then add the fact that everyone chose A23... I can understand that one may not be lightyears better than the other, but I think those 2 data points are kind of the opposite of your conclusion.
      Either way, no big deal... if they're both good enough for people to like them, it is splitting hairs... more interesting for me is that this seems to be another of a series of data points indicating that something is going on with EC's batching / bottling process.

    The laser code is a letter followed by three digits which indicate the day of the year. It would be very interesting to compare A222 to A229. Maybe the issue only happened in the first 2 to 4 days of bottling. Maybe the whole thing is just BS. I have only opened 1 of my 3 C923s.

    • @SRVandDtrouble
      @SRVandDtrouble 6 місяців тому

      There are a lot of laser codes and a lot of inconsistency with just that alone so it's not hard to see that the liquid is definitely in question too. My codes are A22131814 and A22131820. I have been through Reddit and Cams videos comments and there are some anomaly's some have no code some have a digit only code on the front starting with 17. So there is a lot to compare. The funny thing is with the pull of all these channels they could easy pull samples from dozens of people and then do a big blind and put this to rest.

    • @nathana.7473
      @nathana.7473 6 місяців тому

      @@SRVandDtrouble The whole "17" thing is bogus and people being inattentive. Each bottle actually has TWO codes on it. The "17" code is a different code that is visible on the bottom edge of the glass. You can see this on every shot that is in this video of the bottles; for example, 6:48 -- you can see the Axxx code on the back, and then if you move your eyes down towards the edge, bam: there's the "17" code everybody is talking about.
      When I look at my bottle, that code is muuuuuuuuch harder to see / less visible than the primary one. In fact, when looking at it in person, it almost looks like it is INSIDE the glass. So my theory is that this "17" code is actually put there by the GLASS MANUFACTURER, and denotes something about the production of the glass bottle itself. While the "A" code is put there by Heaven Hill at the time of bottling.
      So people who are saying that their bottles have a different code on it that begins with "17" either are somehow blind to the other one / are missing it, OR somehow their bottle didn't get etched with the HH bottling code on the production line, so it's missing completely.

    I'm not convinced the # in the A laser code has anything to do with the bottling date. My C923 bottles have 2 laser codes. A222 and 17 23 174 and second bottle A223 and 17 23 176. My A123 batch laser code is both 17 22 314 and A354. The thing is I bought that A123 in Oregon on Jan. 2, 2023. It's unlikely that it only took 13 days to bottle, package, ship to OR (control state so has to go to the warehouse first), then distributed to the liquor store, then I bought it all during the Xmas and New Year's holidays. The 174, 176, and 314 (A123) could actually be the bottling days in the year on the other laser code starting with 17 (the next 2 numbers would be year, 23 for C923 and 22 for A123).

    Weird video. Conclusions dont match the evidence at all. Great setup though.
    I mean I get it. We all wish there was no variation through the batch and we could just firget about date codes. I want that to be true too.
    But just because want it to be true doesnt mean you can ignore your own blind tasting results.
    The one thing worth exploring here is whether there is any bias towards the first taste in a triangle test. But to do it properly, you'd need totally different tasters who dodnt know why they were tasting.
    My opinion, I think with a high proofer like this there should more often be bias against the first sample. Usually your pallate needs a sip or 2 to taste past the higher ABV. But im willing to be wrong on that.
    Point is made here that any difference was sublte, but Id say thats true when comparing most batches of ECBP. Its actually fairls consistent.
    Getting the same blind result between 4 tasters is actually a very strong signal when comparing multiple batches of ECBP in my opinion.
