In 1998 Simon wrote and directed his first short “Victor” together with Joel Bergvall, which earned them an Academy Award Nomination. The two went on to direct “The Invisible” (aka, Den Osynlige) to critical acclaim, which gave them the opportunity to move across the big pond to Los Angeles. "The Invisible" also premiered at Screamfest 2004 and won numerous awards.
Childhood friends Cole and Brian haven’t spoken for a while and their friendship is rocky at best. But now Cole needs Brian’s help to find Laura, a girl who he believes was abducted a few weeks ago and who holds a special place in Cole's heart. But to fulfill their quest, they need to get over their past and break into a cabin occupied by a malicious woodsman deep in an unholy forest.

The monster isn't Laura and never was, it's just a shape-shifter in the form of Laura. The guy is caring for it for some reason, worshiping it or using it or something. He needs to feed it, so he stalks people and finds a reason to lure them to his house (saving a friend/crush/family). He chose the boys, found out about the missing Laura (possibly a previous meal), lured them to his place and to the monster disguised as Laura and then meal time.

... then the boys' friends come looking for them, and it's dinner by flashlight again for Mr. Monster!
Notice the crib in the locked room? I think the man is Laura's father. I think that the multitude of deer antlers indicate that someone has a huge appetite for meat ... As Laura matures, her diet requires human flesh... Her mom is likely a shapeshifter type of being. But she's gone, so Dad has resigned himself to his fate ... Somehow he has to provide for her & luring a boy who has a crush on her was the easiest method. He looks sad because he's so ambivalent, he loves his daughter, but doesn't want to hurt anyone else...Maybe this is the first time. He also could be thinking that they'll have to live on the run, moving from town to town ... He realizes that it's just a matter of time before she's hunted down.
If a girl goes missing and you discover a local man has a picture of her, you call the police, give them the picture and the information then let them handle the situation while you go home.
I'm surprised more people aren't posting this comment. It was exactly what I thought: "You think this guy is a kidnapper at best, a murderer at worst--and rather than call authorities, you decide the best plan is to break into his house in the remote woods?" Additionally, I thought, "You encounter a man-eating monstrosity, and rather than kill it, you decide to keep it as a pet and feed it people?" Why not just buy a tiger on the black market if that's your fetish, and how is it this woman grew up in town where she apparently was behaving perfectly normally for years? This guy was, apparently a friend of hers--and somehow she was able to not eat everyone around her until one day when she's kidnapped hiking?
You can pick apart every single film if you try hard enough, but in the real world people make bad decisions. Take a look at the daily news....
You don't think certain men - especially young men, would jump at the chance to make heroes out of themselves, if they were in a similar situation?
Maybe he just wanted to be her hero or something, than takes a stupid choice... The man on the cabin may have a link to the girl as family or somthing, thats why he dont kill the girl/monster.
Not a chance!! You follow the lead without any defenses or weapons, without knowing whats going on, and definitely without any form of combat training!! Who wouldnt?

Definitely. Cops would make for a better meal anyway, since they work out & are well fed (at least in theory)... But seriously, that's what happens in horror movies. People make dumb decisions & they get killed for it.

Because it's a film. Characters in film have absolutely no free will. They are completely at the mercy of the writer and director.

I honestly think the dumbest part was when he dug through the cupboards looking for a key...like look in drawers, trinket dishes/cups, etc lol and neithet of them heard that loud ass truck pull up?! I still love all these shorts but there's always a 'why the hell did they do that' part in everything lol
I had a feeling something was up with her like when she wouldn't respond to them when they started talking to her
The best thing about these short films is that you don’t have to sit through 60+ minutes of boring to see if the story is any good. These are so much better than the crap hollywood fare these days. Thanks to all who made these films and thanks for posting!

If anything, a prequel. This leaves you with too many questions. A lot of people liked it, but I didn't bc it left too meant things unanswered. A prequel might fix that. Might.

the thing i hate about shorts is sometimes they end the movie before we get to see the good parts, like just as the monster arrives the movie ends, or we don't fully get to see why the person is a monster like what caused her to be like that and why did the guy know to lock her/it up? this and many other like it are very good, but also confusing, and also very upsetting i want to see more but they end it so abruptly it's like they bring you to that place of wondering what's going to happen next then they end it just as it's getting good. BOOO, anyways that's just my take on these short movies, they're good but why end it at the worst times? doesn't make any sense.
That’s kind of the point, they want you to ask questions
It’s all about the mind game. It leaves the interpretation up to you. Which is actually more fun. Most of the time our own fears are far darker then what we may see in a short film and unanswered questions just add to that fear. So many comments about short horror films are about people explaining what they through the film was about. It’s cool to read everyone’s different take on it. 😊

It’s a little confusing at first but it’s not Laura and never was. It’s a shape shifter and her dad I assume from the crib was following the boys me planned on them coming to save Laura.... so she can feed. I’d love to see more. A backstory or additional kills. The film is well done for sure but with keeping with classic shorts tradition it just ends w a huge cliffhanger since they don’t have 2 hours to shock you and leave a lasting impression they tend to use cliffhangers to make you be like

Kathy Hines I thought so as well. The self satisfied semi smirk on his face let you know he planned the whole thing. I mean at that point it was obvious because of the stalking pictures but definitely good acting.

The cinematography is superb, there are enough nuances and details to let us understand the plot of the story (like him finding the photos of them and its clear they were the prey) and the suspense is palpable! Its grips me to the end, as I am drawn into the terror.

Guessed a bit of the ending thought I knew fully what was going on was kind of right but still threw a great but strange twist at the end that would make me want to watch it as a movie well done.

That was really good. better than some full length horror movies. I read a comment where someone said they'd like to see a prequel. I agree. I'd love to know what lead up to the guys searching for Laura, and why the former friends became estranged. Good job. Great directing. Thanks, Screamfest!

The creepy cabin owner lured those kids out there. He had taken random pictures of them just like the one of the girl. He didn’t go in because it’s feeding time. The little self satisfied smirk on his face at the end says “all went according to my plan”.
It’s not Laura guys it’s his daughter who is a shapeshifter demon. He feeds her 4o lb of meat all the time and it gets costly so he lured people in to feed her . A good idea... pretend to be one of the previous meals she ate ( the real Laura ) to life out the boys who the man knew would come looking. It was all just a trap so she can feed. Never was Laura at all.. it’s his kid. I assume from the crib. I mean if I was in that situation I’d chain her up also so not up just ho kill everything in sight but I think that’s prolly what happens maybe starting with her own mother. So he chained her and fed her and raised her. Gotta accept your kids the way they are eh!?

Nicely maintained tension and atmosphere throughout. "Hero" brings a gun (people in horror films who never think to grab even a stick for self-defense drive me crazy). Well done!

So I assume that "Laura" wasn't really Laura, but rather a monster taking her shape to bring her victims closer. The part no one else seems to mention is when the boys first go into "Laura's" room, the camera shows a crib. So the question is: Is this monster the Woodsman's child, did the Woodsman mate with the monster, or did he feed the monster a baby? I would say it's most likely that it's his child, since he appears to be protecting and feeding it, there doesn't appear to be a 'child monster' (from breeding), and even if you were going to feed a baby to a monster, you wouldn't need to put it in a crib. That's why they call me "The World's Greatest Detective"... :)

I really enjoyed this, I want more of the story.
Definitely one of the short horror films i was wishing to see more. I loved it and have questions i hope to have answered with a part 2. Was she this creature before or after he abducted her? If the one guy said he was the last one to see her in those woods why didnt she kill him then? Why did the man take photos of those guys? Did he already know that one guy would come looking for her when the guy found the dropped photo of her? I really liked it and how it would lead one direction then change 😊
NOTE: I like the theory that: The guy kidnaps people for the shape shifter to eat, knowing that missing people attracts others to their rescue. Personally (if not letting the police handle it) call the family and let them handle it. Sorry I just don't want to be eaten. LOL! (And the real Monster is this backwoods manson character.) GREAT SHORT!

Synopsis:
If you ever watched "Species: The Awakening" you may find this one has a similar concept.
Laura was adopted by the man on the woods when she was infant. Soon, the man discovers that this girl has an alien DNA on her. But he still keeps her as his niece and live by the woods. Years after, Laura grew up completely oblivious of her true identity/form. Her "uncle" managed to ensure her survival through hunting (mostly wild animals).
Laura became a resident of the city when she entered College much to her Uncle's protests. This is when she met Cole. They've been friends. But Cole harbors a strong feeling for this mysterious woman. She went missing after she killed someone, when her hunger for flesh was triggered on a night party. Her Uncle was in the neighborhood, probably waiting for the time Laura would reemerged her hunger for human flesh. He saved her before the cops arrived.
The man kept Laura hidden and chained. Set up a hidden camera to keep her on check. And the girl gave no protest for she is disconcerted by the events. Until her friend Cole came to her rescue...

Check out the director’s feature film, The Invisible (2002). It’s a Swedish ghost story. It had a US remake done.
