Why Extended Rear Facing is So Important

  • This video from one of our favourite car seat suppliers, BeSafe, demonstrates why we are so passionate about extended rear facing car seats.
Using a rear facing car seat can reduce a child's risk of death from a collision at 50mph from 40% to 8% compared to a forward facing one. This is due to the forces applied to a child's body are greatly reduced and more evenly spread across the back of the body rather than on the head and neck.

Besafe Stretch (135 cm and 36 kg), Axkid Minikid 3 (135 cm and 36 kg) or Klippan Opti 129 (135 cm and 32 kg) should be every parents choice for their precious ones. Long rear facing car seats to at least 7 years old. The best for our children.
Rather broken legs than broken neck with death or paralysis as outcome if the accident is a fact. It's much safer for adults also to sit rear facing. But hard to drive that way. ;-)
Here in Sweden we have less death among young children than in other countries because we don't turn our children. The death in young children we have is because the parents keep the kids forward facing or not belted at all.

In the US most car seats can rear face until 40lbs (18kg) which is usually 3-4 years old. Some of the very expensive seats can go up to 50lbs rear facing but for most kids 40lbs is enough especially if your child is small for their age.

Hi Chris, Your point has been brought up many times and I'm glad I can answer. In general rear bumps tend to be no where near as significant as a front end/head on collision due to a number of factors such as from crumple zones, etc.
Albeit still pretty awful to be involved in any crash the chances of being seriously hurt in a rear end collision are nowhere near as great as a front end, hence the focus on rear facing for younger travellers!

Hi Chris..In the rear end collision, I think, the relative speed is smaller and hence the impact will be lesser. Btw I am not technically sound to tell this.

    • @TrojanLube69
      @TrojanLube69 Рік тому +3

The force of inertia on a rear collision, if the scenario you mean is the car being hit isn’t in movement already, it will still be less force than any frontal impact.
Why? The inertia and G forces of going 0 moh to 15-20 mph in less than a second aren’t nothing compared to going 45/60/70 mph to 0 in less than a second.
In conclusion, no crash is good, no impact can be 100 guaranteed of no injuries. But if you prepared for the worst scenario rather than the mild ones , you will have a greater chance of survival.
Now that you know this, how safe do you feel letting kids ride school buses - how they have been doing for the past 20 years ?

Hello, I see replies to rear end collisions are not at the same speed. In the study, the car is rear ending someone else or something so I think that same speed still needs to be a factor in being rear ended. Typically a person can control their driving habits to prevent rear ending another vehicle, but we cannot control others driving into us. I'm not saying front facing is better than rear ended, rather the same factors need to be applied for all types of accidents.

    Regular Seat: 10 - Adult
    5. Keep your kids in the BACK Seat until the age of 13

I think it's quite obvious to most, but rear ended crashes 99% of the time are shunts, bumps and in most circumstances there is significantly less damage being caused. Head on and front collisions are the most dangerous (by orders of magnitude). I advise you to do a bit of research on both and you will see for yourself and hopefully understand why rear facing is a much safer option.

My wife keeps seeing these "articles" and thinks they are correct in all circumstances. Can you please put an update that explains that in a rear ended crash that a rear facing car seat will cause all the problems to your child that the video shows in the forward facing car seat. Example, in your video you could assume they hit a similar car that is stationary while they were running 50 km/h. If you were stationary and a similar car (with driver texting or looking at facebook) rear ends you at 50 km/h then wouldn't a rear facing car seat make the child's body/ head do the same thing your video shows to the forward facing car seat? And then being rearended in a similar situation with rear facing would be more dangerous/deadly then forward facing?

    • @lilyjessicalimmer7531

No completely untrue basics laws of physics. The only way this would be that case is if a car is travelling backwards ie reversing at 50mph then rear ended someone. It’s based on the direction of car travelling force is against the car. As cars travel forward so to counteract the force which is going forward you REAR FACE. Why do you think newborns are rear faced then if it’s more dangerous?

The weight, height, and age limits for the 4Ever are as follows: Rear Facing: 4 - 40 lbs (1.8 - 18 kg) 18 - 43″ (46 - 110 cm) or when the top of the child's head is less than 1″ (2.5 cm) below the headrest adjustment handle (whichever comes first).
