    Fun fact, when Frankie was filming that scene and threw Martens against the TV, that specific move wasn't scripted, and she really did throw him against it hard enough to shatter the thing!

      To be fair, it doesn't actually take _that_ much of a jolt to shatter a screen. I'm sure it hurt a bit, but hitting your head on an open cabinet door would hurt quite a bit more.

    Judging from Bobbie's facial expressions as she heard about Avasarala preventing the return shuttle, that was the moment she decided Avasarla was serious. At that point, she only needed verification.
    Martins' hand terminal showed that the MCRN Karakum was going to Ganymede to pick up Caliban. That was an important sequence...got to read the screens in this show.
    Roci doesn't speak, but she beeps in response to Alex. Notice how the moment Roci picked up the Martian vessel, she turned the lighting to the blue battle mode. Roci has determined that Martian vessels are a threat to her crew.
    If you were watching closely, you could see the moment Amos' shoulder was hit.
    I think Martins and the Martian cabal running the Caliban project had lost control when Bobbie was rescued on Ganymede. They certainly wouldn't have wanted any of Bobbie's team to have survived. Caliban is undoubtedly a very closely held, highly classified project that the Martian rescue team wouldn't have known about. They were just doing their job rescuing a fellow Marine...but once she'd been rescued, it became difficult for Martins to just make Bobbie disappear. But going by how they were willing to put the blame on Travis, they'd certainly blame everything...the loss of the team, even the start of the battle over Ganymde...on Bobbie and drown out any protestations she might make.
    Good discussion about hybrids and the possible difference between what the Protomolecule would have created compared to what Mao's science goons concocted. Yes, as we discovered thought the scientist Cortazar, the Protomolecule has its own thing to do. We heard Julie say, "You can't stop the Work!"
    Naomi being a mother also makes her quite dangerous. Yes, we can understand more of those motivations who has a lot more invested in the health and surviving of Belters that even merely being one of them.

    • @charlie7mason
      @charlie7mason 21 день тому +1

      Just a minor tidbit. They were never intending to rescue Bobby as they triggered the Hybrid's implant/detonator to ensure that everyone was wiped. Then a Martian squad found her in a rescue SOP and Martens and the Cabal had to improvise the rest of the way.

    16:30 The show very rarely breaks its hard-science foundation. The protomolecule is basically magic, but apart from that, physics rules. This is one of those very few instances. There was the wrench suddenly flying out of Holden's hand in S1E2, but that was just an effects mistake, and the show kept apologizing for that later (keep an eye out whenever a wrench or other tool is on camera in zero g). But Alex's slingshot is impossible as it is shown. The Jovian system is way bigger and way less dense than it appears here. This maneuver would have taken months to complete in reality. It was a conscious decision by the showrunners to add some visual spice.
    And I don't mind at all. And I'm saying that as someone who writes orbital mechanics simulations for a living.
    Edit: I forgot, there is one other thing the show does get wrong about slingshotting. Like here, it shows Alex reacting to the acceleration as she Roci keeps winding on its course, but in reality, he would be in free fall the entire time and not feel any acceleration whatsoever. This will come up once more in the future. And again, I don't really care that the show does this. I'm saying this so I can put the time watching this on my time sheet as "public outreach effort." :D

    Little detail that's hard to miss and easily spottable in this episode: when Alex is doing his slingshot run and encounter the martian ship, you can see the Roci alarm blaring. If you notice, the alarm color is flashing blue, contrary to most alarms we are used to where the standard "warning" color is usually red. You go to RED ALERT after all ;).
    This is actually much better explained in the books, but on Mars, since Mars most common color is red compared to Earth's blue, the color coding is inverted, red is seen as the friendly it's all right color where blue is the "warning" color.
    There's a few other instances in the show where you can see Martians identify friends or ok stuff in red and enemies or not ok stuff in blue. That's also the reason why the Roci battle lights are blue.
    Shit like this is why i love this series :D
    The books even go more in depth about how the Belters don't really develop a sense of "up and down" like Earthers and Martians. When more than one inner enter the same room in zero-g they immediately and silently convene on a "up" and a "down" and they float and operate relatively to that agreed upon standard everybody oriented in the same direction. When more than one Belter enter the same room in zero-g everyone is standing at different angles not caring about up or down. During the series, that makes more than one inner dizzy when they happen to enter a room full of Belters where everyone is floating in whatever direction because the inners brain is used to recognize an "up" and a "down" the whole time. We NEED an up and a down to function, Belters don't lol.

    The thing you called a track pad is actually a really neat device. It’s a 3D mouse made by 3DConnexion. It’s like a fancy joy stick. You can tilt it front or back and left and right like most joysticks, but also twist is like fancier joysticks. This covers pitch, roll, and yaw. Not only that, but you push or pull front or back, left or right, or up or down, to get all the translational movements. It’s great for 3D modeling, where you can either move an object around, or you move around and environment. A pretty fitting device to control a ship actually.

    Whether it’s a longer or shorter separation between our main party, it’s clear that it felt significant at least, like it could be a parting of paths between Naomi and Holden. You’ll have to wait and see if it lasts longer…
    Alex’s plotting of the slingshotting is one of the looser scientific elements of the show, as it would’ve taken much longer to plan something like that out, but it makes for a cool visual too so it works :p
    Speaking of Naomi, we remember what she said in the fourth episode of the series, and have a hint as to who she meant when she said, “I never got to say goodbye…”

    14:30 To be fair, there was no reason not to give up the info in that moment. He's in the martian embassy, surrounded by guards. He would rightfully assume that Bobbie would be apprehended immediately and then be taken out behind the chemical shed and shot without much fanfare.

    When you finish, check out the books. The audiobooks are exceptional, if you'd prefer to experience them that way. I don't want to downplay this series because they nailed nearly everything they could in this adaptation, but some things couldn't be done do to physiological limitations of every actor growing up in gravity.
    Then, I suggest you look into the thematic & mythological background of the names and titles. Miller's story draws amazing parallels to the roles Eros, Psyche, & Venus played in that Greek myth. Every name has a purpose.

    • @MattNolanCustom
      @MattNolanCustom 20 днів тому

      Hmm. No mention of Psyche in The Expanse, and I don't see many parallels with the Eros & Psyche myth. Maybe you're connecting the dots differently.

    • @IamMeHere2See
      @IamMeHere2See 20 днів тому

      @@MattNolanCustom Psyche was a mortal whom Eros, better known as Cupid, loved. They had a secret marriage, even though they were from different worlds. When Aphrodite, whom the Romans called Venus, found out, she punished Psyche severely. After mamy trials to prove herself, Payche proved herself to Venus & was ascended to be the goddess of soul so her marriage to Eros could stand.
      Julie & Miller are not direct stand-ins for Psyche & Eros, but it is fitting that they do come from different worlds, having been drawn together by love, yet they can only be together with the 'permission' of Venus.
      It's not an earth-shattering though (ha!), but it does add a bit of background color to the series, much like the meaming behind various ship names. _Rocinante_ is a very well-known example, but so is the _Canterbury._ Named after the "Canterbury Tales," it's about a bunch od pilgrims each on their way to Canteebury for different reasons, much like this crew of ice haulers.

      Loved "the Expanse". It is probably one of the best TV series in recent years. That being said, in this scenario Bobby is wrong and she absolutely behaves like a baby and betrays Mars. Both she and her team is/where martian marines and therefore they have sworn an oath to defend Mars even at the cost of their lives. She is acting on emotions while her superiors are trying to preserve the peace. Her actions could very well start a war that would take many more lives. But of course the series evolves in a way that depicts her as a hero.
      I think this was a missed opportunity by the producers to present an aspect of sacrificing for your country that is absent from most movies.

      Governments and militaries exist to serve their people, and as such, it is *never* okay to needlessly sacrifice people in the name of meeting policy goals.
      It was no more ethically acceptable to let a bioweapon slaughter the marines than it was okay to expose U.S. soldiers to radiation and fallout in the nuclear weapons tests of the 1950s and '60s. That's the real-world parallel, here.
      Moreover, the primary theme of this *entire show* is that those able to transcend their own prejudices and preconceptions are the best possible people -- the true heroes in *any* society.
      Had Bobbie *not* rebelled, she'd have remained just another cog in a war-machine that would inevitably grind human beings into meat for the protomolecule.
      Bobbie chose to be *a fine human being* rather than an obedient soldier.

      @@thomashiggins9320 You are making your judgement from a position where you actually know how the story unfolded. Bobby did not. She had no clue what was happening. She was willing to sacrifice countless other lives for the honor of few.
      Spoiler!! Do not read below!!!
      And this is sort of the exact same issue Ashford has when he kills a few crewmen and threatens to kill everyone that entered the ring in order to prevent what he sees as an existential threat to humanity. That is the rational and safe bet. He is the actual hero. There is absolutely no reason to believe anything coming from Holden and a few of his "crazy friends". He is the one acting on the information available and rational thought. Naomi, Carmina... act on emotion and trust in one person.
      Sure that is part of what make The Expanse a good show. But this is still a story. In real life one does not meet such a series of "fortunate events". Your best bet is to go by information and experience.

    It's kind of a shame that they had to compress time so much in the adaptation to screen. Alex's journey from where he was hiding down to Ganymede using nothing but thrusters and gravity assists would have taken weeks.
