    The Razorback is a racing ship. A very different thing from slingshotting. It's emblematic of the dichotomy between Earth and the Belt. Racing is very resource intensive - a sport of the rich. Slingshotting is the reverse - trying to gain speed by using very little in resources by relying on natural gravity.

    This is episode 3 of 16 of this amazing hot streak.
    The set for the Razorback is a thing of beauty. The ship is a racing pinnace; it's basically an Epstein torpedo with a cockpit straped on the front.
    I love Fred Johnson as a character, but always remember that he's an outsider trying to corral many very disparate Belter factions. Fred sees himself as a statesman, not a "tough guy." However, that does not mean that your instincts are off the mark.
    Yes, Holden the White Knight is back. Let's see where this journey goes.

    Back when the crew decided to send the Protomolecule into the sun, Naomi did some outstanding face acting. Her facial expression was exactly the expression I've seen on my wife's and daughter's face whenever they gave ascent to something they didn't agree with. When I saw Naomi's expression, I instantly said, "She's not going along with that. Well done, Dominique." From the Belter point of view, they know Earth or Mars wouldn't hesitate to destroy a major Belter station (like Tycho or Ceres or Pallas) to keep it out of the hands of the other ("We had to destroy the village in order to save it").
    I think your reading of Fred is correct. I'm not sure you meant it, but part of Fred's weakness against the politicians (Avasarala, Errinwright, Dawes) is that he's an honorable man (like Admiral Souther). That's a disadvantage against a politician. That's how he was suckered into being used as the "Butcher of Anderson Station"...he never suspected he'd be used dishonorably.
    I liked your discussion of Holden. Prax had gotten to him, that final nudge to push him back into the paladin role. Going to Tycho would have been a self-serving action, an action merely to save themselves. Seeking to save Prax's daughter was a paladin action. And as you noted, Amos would have voted to save a child anyway.
    In the last scene of the second season finale, they showed us Strickland was on a moon of Jupiter (which was on the horizon). Then they backed away to show the moon itself. A bit of Googling for "Jovian moons" showed that was Io. So, they'd told us that much in the season 2 finale.
    Cara Gee, the actor playing Drummer, is a Native American (Canadian, actually, so "First Nation"). She as said that she drew upon those feelings in her character as a Belter, a member of a group of tribes slowly coalescing into nationhood against more powerful entities in conflict over their territory.
    Cotyar spoke of "teakettling" away from Mao's yacht. "Teakettling" means using water steam (superheated by the fusion drive) to move away by attitude thrusters rather than the main fusion drive itself. The steam reaction would not show on the sensors of opposing ships the way the fusion drive would.

    I think Fred is a great character. He does come off as a guy just playing the role of tough guy, but I think that’s by design. He’s done some seriously brutal shit in the past, he is “The Butcher” and he knows that is all that most people see.
    He also knows that as a power player from Earth, siding with The Belt… he’s got to walk a razor thin line at all times. His power exists because Dawes allows it, and because the Belters allow it. He’s in a perpetually precarious state. If he wants to flex and toss the occasional Belter out an airlock, that’s fine. It’s the Belter way. But at the slightest hint of weakness or favour towards the inner planets, he will be spaced without a second thought. And he knows it.
    He’s got the Belt’s best wishes at heart, but they’ll never trust him fully. No one does, not even his right hand in Drummer.
    He’s got to be tough, but not too tough. Mailable, but not a pushover. Smart… but not too smart as to cause suspicion of secret motives. It’s a hell of a spot to be in really.

    Pinus contorta, the Lodgepole pine, is a very logical choice for them to have in the story, because it lives in dry harsh climates, like dry Mountain forests. And Praxis being a little poetic, it doesn't die from forest fires, but the forest fires are necessary to break down a resin in the pine cones, which releases the seeds

    Errinwright is certainly a nasty piece of work, but I think we see the root of his motivation here in one line. It is fear. Fear of Earth losing the "top dog" slot in the system. The paranoia of the dying empire facing payback from its former colonies and the loss of control over the exploited resources of the Belt.

    33:00 One thing about Fred Johnson I've not seen addressed by anyone is that he's not actually a "leader" in the same way the leaders of Earth and Mars are, and not even in the same way as Anderson Dawes.
    Tycho Station is a shipyard, wholly owned by Tycho Manufacturing. It's a company town. Fred is not an elected leader, he's the administrator. And given that he seems to be doing his own thing and basically declared himself independent from Tycho Manufacturing when he "commandeered" the Nauvoo, he is quite literally a dictator. I'd say that's why his position is wobbly. Even when they do manage to make the trains run on time, dictators often don't last very long. We already saw one coup attempt that would have succeeded if our little band of heroes hadn't stepped in at the last moment. Who says it's going to be the last attempt?
    Also, according to the books, there are about 15,000 people working on Tycho. There are about 6 million people living on Ceres alone. Given that Dawes now is the de-facto mayor of Ceres, that might explain why Fred seems like a big fish in a very small pond compared to Dawes, let alone Earth and Mars.
    (I'm not saying Dawes was democratically elected to lead Ceres. He was a union rep, so he probably was elected to that, but the main point is that Dawes came up from within. He wasn't installed as leader from the outside by decree, as Fred was.)

    Bobbie got robbed again. The book description of her suit coming off in an emergency is way cooler.
    Cara Gee brought Drummer to life through sheer force of will. That character is an amalgamation of several characters and at any point they could have written her out - and I think that was the intention. But she just owned it. And if you see the actress herself, she's nothing like Drummer.

    I love hearing your breakdowns at the end. What I think this show needs more credit for is how subtle they are at slipping in informative that will be used later, but blends in to the rest of the world building. The razorback just sounded like a plot device for an argument between daughter and father, but it comes back around! (And there are still lots more waiting for you!) Conversely, this I why I was so disappointed in Lost. There were tons of plot threads that either had dumb explanations, or where never used. JJ just loved making those mystery boxes, but could rarely figure out what to do with them!

    Naomi likely would not have given the protomolecule to Fred or anyone else, but back on Ganymede she really didn't think she was going to survive. Which demonstrates her strong character. She continued on her rescue mission even though it appeared suicidal.
    The fact that she deceived the crew and didn't destroy their sample is the greater sin...IMO
    She thought she was dead and decided to not leave it out there for no one.

    Slingshotting doesn't necessarily not use the main drive. The only reason Alex was doing the slingshot maneuver around the moons without the drive was that he was trying to avoid being detected by all the other ships in the area.

    • @dapeach06
      @dapeach06 5 днів тому

      In everything we've seen, slingshotting DOES mean not using the drive, and using gravity assists only. The Razorback is not a slingshot racer, it's a powerboat racer

    • @MattNolanCustom
      @MattNolanCustom 5 днів тому

      It's my understanding that the Belter extreme sport of slingshot racing, upon which bets are placed and great fame is won (if you don't die like Bizi Betiko) is all about not using the main drive after your initial trajectory set-up burn. The skill is in using the alignment of the planets and moons and the gravity assist acceleration you get from them to traverse a course in the shortest time. I could be wrong. I don't remember if the rules are explicitly laid out anywhere in the books, but certainly not in the TV show.

    One tiny gripe I have is how easy they change transponders names. They could do it with Fred’s help because he had a fleet of ships under his control, that he knows the engines, sizes etc, and would be able to sacrifice the name of one, and give it to another. It’s not just changing names, but transplanting and entire documented history. At least that’s how I remember it in the books. If anyone’s seen Lord of War, there is a great scene dealing with this issue, lol.

    • @MattNolanCustom
      @MattNolanCustom 4 дні тому

      Hmm, you could be right. The purpose for the rename here seems to be more in service of the metaphor inferred by Prax's description of the Pinus Contorta tree, though the justification due to the outbreak of war is fair. Maybe there's an excuse that some of the Belter ships are cobbled together from pieces of junk and other half-dead ships, and perhaps as a result end up having less than rigorous name history records that the Inners just can't be bothered to police too much.

    So, Alex is a great guy in his own way, no doubt. But let's make no mistake: he is an awful husband and father. He abandoned his family so he could play space cowboy. This happened before the Canterbury and the Protomolecule and the entire human race being in imminent danger. He just couldn't handle being in one place for too long, so he fucking ditched his family, and signed up on the Canterbury, which was gone for years at a time. And his little "apology" message to his wife seems more like a slap in the face to her. Like, imagine you're his wife. Would you want his pathetic apology message? Or would it just be tremendously insulting? Alex apparently had to choose between his family, and living a thrilling life of adventure. He made his choice, and now he has to live with the consequences. And his family's not a part of it. Maybe he can justify it to himself, but that ain't cool man. And his family won't see it that way.

    Naomi is fully in the wrong, full stop. They more than most in the system have all seen first hand the danger the protomolecule possesses in its raw form or when people use it to start tinkering. I am sure They could forgive the deception if she had kept the sample hidden, but ALL of the last 2 seasons had been about stopping the spread of the Protomolecule. it’s her act of giving ANOTHER faction the protomolecule that makes it so hard to forgive.
    Even worse it is an unstable faction, constantly in conflict with itself (something else They saw first hand with the assault on Fred and Drummer at Tycho Station). If Fred had the Protomolecule then and the Rocinante crew hadn’t been there to help, who knows whose hands it would end up in at that point. You said it yourself, Fred is constantly in a state of weakness. It’s crazy to give control of a potentially galaxy ending substance to someone who is in a barely tenable position.
    If Naomi really thought she may die, I’m sure there is something someone so clever like her could have done to put the message out there so it could already be sent if the ship was blown up, but on a delay for Fred to receive it so she could rescind it if she survived. She seems to have used this as an excuse to pull the trigger on what she had probably already been thinking about doing for a long time, giving the Protomolecule to Fred.

      I try to be respectful of the score which is the most likely element to draw a copyright strike. I believe this is still my old program that just distorts the music. I have one now that removes it so it should be better listening going forward :)
      Thank you for watching, my friend!

    No, not a slingshot racer, more like a speedboat used for racing

    I do enjoy your reactions and your general enthusiasm for the show, but constant references to these characters as originating in a game ignores the fact that the game outline simply informed the first few books, but the books expanded the lore FAR beyond that, and they only actually played the game a handful of times. The books are what the show is based on, not the game.

    19:10 dude he’s a deadbeat dad. Sorry but that’s a huge negative for me

      100% agree.
      Although I promised myself I'd reserve judgement until I hear the whole story. Didn't want to damn Alex for what on the surface does in fact look like abandonment but I can certainly agree at this point that it doesn't look great.
      Appreciate your insight and watching, my friend!

      Yeah. Everyone has their baggage, it’s part of what makes the players interesting.
      Holden is the closest to being a “good guy” and he’s kind of messed up.

    Naomi is being selfish by wanting to go to Tycho. Remember the deal she made with Johnson?
