With Bobbi, Avasarala, and Prax all on the ship along with the regular Roci crew, this has to be the best group of characters all working together in the whole show. I love every single one of them so much.
It is a great joy to watch you on this journey. You will be forever changed in what you think is possible in a moderately budgeted, but lovingly crafted serialized show. This is what is possible when everything comes together from the actors, writers, directors, cameramen, effects people, and all of the people whose titles I barely know. This was a team effort that will stand the test of time.
I wonder how long Ty and Daniel worked to come up with an alternate name for the Roci that would both make sense as a reasonable rename, but would also be completely unacceptable to the audience. "This has been my favorite ship combat so far" ...and you hadn't even seen the end yet. The writers said that the colors of the clothing at that UN dinner party were symbolic. Anna wore white, Errinwright wore black. Sorrento-Gillis wore black and white because he vaccilates between good and evil. The writers pulled a "gotcha" on the audience. Back when Avasarala swore to hunt down every member of Mao's family, we all cheered. When Errinwright and Sorrento-Gillis proposed the same thing, Anna reminds us that would be a crime. Something to remember about Amos....he did all those gymnastics to rescue Prax with the oxygen to his suit cut off. That was a lot of strenuous activity on very little oxygen. Then Amos gave Prax the tough love that Prax needed. Wes Chathan certainly did a masterful job in this character; unfortunately, this was a supreme representation of a subtly displayed character. His work here requires experiencing the character over the course of the show rather than one specific scene. Amos gets great scenes, but you don't fully realize how great his work is unless you've seen his representation of the character to that point. Notice that the Razorback is nearly as large as the Roci, even though the Roci is large enough for a crew and a complement of 30 Marines.

28:50 I get where you're coming from. I could mention another show where space combat boils down to "Captain, shields down to 50%. Captain, shields down to 40%." Cue exploding panel on the bridge. "Engineering, damage report" "Cap'n, she canna take much more" yadda yadda yadda. This show threw out the book on that, and wrote an entirely new one. Every space combat scene is different, there are recognizable and novel tactics in each one, they show the preparation and aftermath (Thoth station, anyone?), there are obvious stakes to the ship and crew, and not an exploding panel in sight (unless it happens to get holed by a stray PDC round!). In the books, Amos is described as a big lump of a man. Thank goodness when they cast the role they decided to give him a major glow up. Can't imagine anyone other than Wes playing this character.
Ty Franck, one half of the book-writing duo did not want to cast Wes initially, because he didn't look the part. Naren Shankar, showrunner, convinced him that the ability to nail the right performance was far more important than looking the part. Chatham's performance is a masterclass in understatement while actually conveying lots.
I love the combat scene! Roci blasting by the Razorback into the created shield. then sound disappears as we all take a breath and hold it as the Roci spins in silence and shoots! Plus it showcases Holden's combat savvy, something I didn't assume he possessed! This episode and the next are some of my favorites! Wheeeee - still thrilling after many views!
33:20 Oh man, I am tingly with anticipation. There is a fan-favorite line coming up soon that everybody here is waiting for you to hear, but what *I* really want to see is how you react to another character interaction *just moments before that line.*
15:00 Amos and Prax are so good for each other, and you can tell just by looking at how Amos looks and moves. Wes Chatham did such an amazing and underrated job on this show, just through physicality.
Once a week :) I try to mimic the release that you all experienced during the actual airing. Of course, I don't have the year+ wait between seasons! Thank you for watching, my friend!

15:30 "This is my favorite ship combat we've had so far" You will say that every time when there is ship combat from this point forward. :) You already know that Alex is an amazing pilot, and now you're seeing that Holden is an amazing battlefield tactician.
30:00 You are right. People keep saying "of course there's plot armor! they wouldn't kill James Holden!" And in one sense it's correct. They won't have Holden killed in a random drive-by shooting on Ceres station. But! It's easy to forget, and I forgot myself here for a moment, the show killed Josephus Miller! At the exact moment when the story called for it.
7:56 "Anna Volovodov, Jesus!" In one of the books a character has a hard time memorising "her russian surname, that sounded like a puppy falling down a flight of stairs." (I'm paraphrasing here, I only read a translated version).
It is a real last name for a change - usually they use something that sounds Russian, but actually never used in real life. It's translated as "ox herder" or "ox breeder", so it's one of those craftsmanship names, like Smith, Baker, etc. It's quite rare now. The third 'o' should be stressed, not the second or the fourth ones. Not a big deal though, most of the Russian names are stressed differently in English anyway.
The open the doors to the Razorback and find a Martian Marine carrying the Deputy Undersecretary of the UN, trying to save her... everything comes crashing together right here And they aren't done leaving you with your mouth hanging open
Warp, it is pure joy to watch your reactions to this excellent series. You are far and away the best reactor to this series that I have ever seen. Keep up the great work. You are spot on with your understanding of The Expanse: "Hold my beer". You won't be disappointed.
This episode, as you say, is great. the space combat is tactical more than fanciful, the action happens in the suspense rather than the laser beams, that's why it's so awesome. and to get the "avengers level" moment where our characters are finally in the same set! I'm with you, Amos and Bobbie is an interesting combination. can't wait for what's coming! minor [Spoiler] iykyk "Are you coming with me?" "With you, or With you?"
BTW, thanks thanks the Coffee reminder. I had to pause and go make a fresh pot ... all because you raised your cup. This aec of the Books is one of my favorites. The reader is drawn in to a months long journey across the sol system.
RE: Chrisjen - I like how the show develops her character. At the beginning, she made major decisions behind the safety of staying 'behind a desk'. As a result, she probably didn't understand the reality 'on the ground' of her decisions. We see that she is a character of integrity, because her actions mirror her words. She leaves the safety of the office desk and flings herself out into space. Putting herself in the riskiest position possible to save Earth, to save everyone, to get the truth. I am finally listening to the audiobook. How she gets away from Earth is a different scenario. I like how the TV show did it.
It was a great idea to force Chrisjen into a space travel - we saw her in a comfort zone of politics and subterfuge, but now we can see how incredibly unprepared she is, both physically and mentally, for a very different life of hostile elements and straightforward dangers of space. She is honestly constantly either irritated or simply scared, and it's genuinely interesting to watch.
30:50 Minor disagreement: I don't think Chrisjen was injured or beat up when she embarked on that joyride in the Razorback. Any blood on her was Cotyar's. She's just old and has never experienced hard burns before. She has been off-planet, but civilian space travel is never done at more than half a g, tops. Bobbie, on the other hand, as a marine, is well-trained for combat burns. Self-correction: when taking off from or landing on Earth, even civilian passengers necessarily experience more than one g of acceleration (Earth's gravity plus speeding up or slowing down), but it looks like shuttles in the Expanse have enough juice to do both of those gently, let's say at 1.5 g the most.
Interesting notes about ship combat. Yeah, I like the IDEA of ship combat but honestly I can't think of many other shows/movies where I really cared much about it. Expanse is LEAGUES ahead of any other example I can think of (maybe that should be parsecs)
I just want to thank the community, for not spoiling. This has been my favorite reactor to TE ever;) Love this, enjoying every minute. It is very much like watching it live, back in the day, with a friend.
I remember when I first time have seen the episode and thought - 'it is damn good, I wonder how good the season will be, I cannot be just as good as thise episode, can it?'. And it just kept getting better and better. Still I think that season 5 is the best, but season 3 is like a racing train and still managing to deliver some of the most deep, thouthful moments in the series. Take care!
Great Great reaction!! Sir I would like to commend you on always dressing up for all the different shows you cover! Its quite enduring! Watching your reaction with these episodes of this masterpiece reminds me just how really special this show is! This episode is the payoff that was timed out and paced perfectly! The amazing mixture of drama, action, special effects, dialog, acting, writing, lighting, musical score!!!! And this isn't even my favorite!! Coming soon! I know you're ahead.... Amos telling Prax, all he knows is a kid needs at least one parent to not give up on them! He asked Prax " If you give up on Mei , what does she have left? What do you have left?😢😭😭 thank you Wes Chatham! Looking forward to the next one!
33:50 "In the future if he makes a decision independent of the crew..." - Yup! Nuff said. Prax & Amos and Bobby & Chrissy are both fascinating duos, it's so much fun to watch them interact. When the show ends, you should watch the UA-cam podcast with Wes Chatham and Ty Frank, it's stellar. But not before you finish the show. The next episode is gonna be oh so fun.
As impressive as the fight between the Roci and the UN ship was, you’re gonna squeal like a school kid when another Captain goes full beast-mode. For most of this show we’re led to believe that Jim is the best Captain out there. But in the immortal and wise words of Yoda, _No… there is another…_ Not gonna spoil who it is though. Maybe we’ve met him/her already, maybe not. But it’s hands down the single best scene of space combat ever made. Pretty short, but it’s off the wall in it’s complexity, fury and realism.
You'd mentioned elsewhere that you were recommending this show to people you know. How is that going? Have any of them been sold on your hype? I remember recommending it to a few people at work and how excited they were when they finally got to CQB. Made for some tremendous water cooler get togethers.
10:00 You only react that way bc you know who is on that racing ship. Our crew doesn't, and there is a war going on with people in trouble everywhere, so why should they abandon their mission? The show doesn't make travel distances as clear as the books do, but we are talking several days delay here.
Wes does such an incredible job of making a very stoic character sing. The little hints of emotion hit so hard when he shows them. Bobby is a very interesting addition to the crew’s rather volatile mix right now. The greatest moments in this show happen when two storylines collide. Strap in, time to peel the paint. 😎
Your "tongue in cheek" spoiler about being sick sucks reminded me that I wanted to warn you to make sure not to pay attention to the list of actors they show in the intro for the next few episodes. I think, specifically, S3E6? Hopefully this warning gets to you in time, you're probably several episodes ahead. Also, I just wanted to say, you're my new favorite reactor. You're catching a lot of details, your emotions, and your final break down of the episodes (and your other shows) are top notch.
Thank you so much for the kind words, my friend...they honestly mean the world to me :) Also I really appreciate the heads up (keep those warnings coming)! I was warned a few episodes ago and haven't watched the intro since :)
@@kirkdarling4120 Yeah, but still. It can really takes away the "Oh, wow!" factor right out of the gate. Don't know why they decided to do it that way, but think it was a mistake IMO.
"They have to get you off the table Avaserela." Well about that, they have to remove one party off the table, doesn't have to be the smaller ship, necessarily. 😅
This show is packed with amazing details. @2:04, when the camera is in Mei's POV looking up through the lid of the pod at Strickland's not-yet-in-focus face, for just an instant his eyes glow blue like a hybrid monster's. She screams because she senses the true monstrous nature he's hiding. "Did you have a bad dream?" Loving your reactions, Warp.
So fun to watch a reactor who gets Amos! Many view him as a big dumb brut with a few one liners. But he is very self-aware he knows what he is and what he isn't. He knows his strengths and what he's lacking. He falls into place here on the Roci because he has Holden, Naomi, and Alex to keep a moral compas pointed in a direction he can trust.
AND that's what he wants. He WANTS people like them. He wants to be a better person and able to do the right thing without being shown. He actually cares about that. But he knows he needs those people around him to keep him on the straight path or he might get lost.
In the audiobook, the narrator gives Anna a Russian accent, since she is originally from outside Moscow. Anna from the show could easily be from St. Petersburg , uh, .. Florida. Anyway, I always enjoyed Elizabeth Mitchell, ever since Juliet from Lost.
So... In this episode Errin-Wright and Serrento-Gillis sit down to dinner and discuss their strategy to threaten Mao's family as a practical method to gain leverage over Mao. Anna objects, pointing out that this is a well established war crime, and we all decide that this sort of behaviour is obviously unacceptable. However... In season 2 episode 6, Avasarala went to talk to Errin-Wright and told him that if Mao did not surrender, if his family could not convince him to turn himself in, then she would 'rain hell fire down on them all. I will freeze their assets. I will cancel their contracts. Cripple their business. And I have the power to do it, because I am the fucking hero who helped save Mother Earth from the cataclysm that Jules-Pierre Mao unleashed... ...Their Mother, the children, their children, all of them, pariahs. Outlaws. Hunted and on the run for the rest of their days until we find them and nail each and every last one to the wall. Make sure you tell them that.' Interesting that our reaction depends on whom is issuing the threat. Morality is not about favouritism yet we cannot help but, be swayed by personal preference.
As a discussion that came up on another reviewer, Volovodov is a minister, not a priest. The distinction is that she does not invoke divine authority, she’s simply an expert on the divine. Catholicism and such have priests. Methodists like Volovodov hold to a “priesthood of all believers” where in D&D terms anyone can invoke divine authority by faith alone, not with a specific delegated power. Think of her as a bard with a high Lore:Christianity skill rather than as a cleric.
I am so happy that you appreciated the crossing of the streams in this episode. Did it help clear your sinuses? I still cringe a little when I see the suits that Prax and Amos were wearing. The design is comically bad, but on the other hand, it led to a great action scene. Chrisjen and Bobbie on the Razorback were awesome to see, and the anticipation for the next episode is high, now that so many of our beloved characters are together at last! Can't wait for the next one!
So, it's true then? We are getting two episodes per week, at least for season three? If so, thank you! the thought of waiting four weeks to see your reaction to what all of this is building up to was hard to bear.
I don't think that has been implied at all. What has been implied is that occasionally there will be a 2-episode week. Frankly, for this I am glad. It will all be over too soon at twice the pace.
The Amos/Prax zero G scene is my least favorite in the entire show. I really did not like it, and it is for 1 reason. That air hose that only exists in that scene and the use of it by the ships mechanic is directly contradicted by dialogue at other points in the show. The scene is cool but that air hose ruins it for me
Other shows have stuff like that every other episode just to shoe-horn some added peril in there. I forgive The Expanse on this occasion as it is very rare for them, and they had to eclipse the Amos between the hulls during the assault on Thoth station somehow.
@@MattNolanCustom it's because the expanse is so good that it bothers me, the scene is great other than the air hose. I just wish they came up with a more plausible reason for it, could have prax get hit directly and knock out his suits air or something similar
@@magurgle I guess. The Expanse has always been big on leaving out direct exposition and leaving a lot to be imagined / figured out by the audience. They are right in the middle of messing with the air recycling systems when they end up taking on this battle. Perhaps that's why Amos and Prax are plugged into the wall rather than plugged into backpacks.
@@Kuonji So you want less show and more tell? Just kidding. At this point, you have to give the writers some credit. If they show them using air hoses for their suits, let's assume that there is a perfect in-universe reason for that, that the writers simply decided not to explain.

Also the term “you secure that sh** Hudson” suddenly seems so much more important.
Don't forget about all those rocks that are somehow a side effect of those same explosions on the bridge of space craft 400 years in the future.
if you like that about the Expanse you might want to give Honorverse a try
"Motherfucking Amos Burton!"
Truer words have never been spoken
In the books, Amos is described as a big lump of a man. Thank goodness when they cast the role they decided to give him a major glow up. Can't imagine anyone other than Wes playing this character.
He is that guy...
@@MattNolanCustom ... and the two of them went on to make a long running podcast/UA-cam series together.
In the show, Amos looks like Wes. In the books, Amos looks like me.
Yes in the books, Amos was shortish but broad and stocky with balding hair
Such a brilliant way to showcase and reveal what Holden's prior U.N. occupation involved. Brilliant naval tactician with more to come :)
Amen 🙏 warp gets it! Exactly why I’m excited for him too 😅
15:00 Amos and Prax are so good for each other, and you can tell just by looking at how Amos looks and moves. Wes Chatham did such an amazing and underrated job on this show, just through physicality.
I really appreciate your dedication to dress up for every time you sit down to watch a show.
How many episodes do you usually record at a time?
Once a week :)
I try to mimic the release that you all experienced during the actual airing. Of course, I don't have the year+ wait between seasons!
Thank you for watching, my friend!
@@WarpReactor Yeah, this is also the season where it was announced that the show was cancelled, so the whole ordeal about if anybody was going to save it was nerve-wracking as all hell, too.
On a related note, this is a cool moment where some of the cast and crew find out about the renewal from Bezos himself:

And here's a video about the huge fan campaign that ended up helping to save the show (DO NOT watch this until after you've finished Season 3, though, as it uses clips from S1-3):
ua-cam.com/video/0u6El-kMgac/v-deo.htmlsi=VnPfFcG6aQ17yVBk
It's so true.
I really appreciate the fashion sense!
@@WarpReactor Thank heavens for you! AND for us because we won't have to wait that long for your reactions. We already did that with the show! LOL Once is enough! 🤪
15:30 "This is my favorite ship combat we've had so far"
You will say that every time when there is ship combat from this point forward. :)
You already know that Alex is an amazing pilot, and now you're seeing that Holden is an amazing battlefield tactician.
Regarding plot armor, the series has surprised even people who have read the novels.
Yeaaahh. Im waiting for reaction to that.
7:56 "Anna Volovodov, Jesus!"
In one of the books a character has a hard time memorising "her russian surname, that sounded like a puppy falling down a flight of stairs." (I'm paraphrasing here, I only read a translated version).
I’m shocked you pronounced it right the first time
It is a real last name for a change - usually they use something that sounds Russian, but actually never used in real life.
The open the doors to the Razorback and find a Martian Marine carrying the Deputy Undersecretary of the UN, trying to save her... everything comes crashing together right here
And they aren't done leaving you with your mouth hanging open
Reminents of the Blue Falcon w/ Miller's intro to the party.
This show does DnD in space RIGHT !!!!
Amos is that guy.
Amos is THAT guy!
Watching you live this excitement reminds me of how I felt first time through. Love it!
I know, I wish we could get in on his Expanse TTRPG game.
21:51 James motherfucking Holden, everyone!
I'm with you, Amos and Bobbie is an interesting combination. can't wait for what's coming!
minor [Spoiler] iykyk
"Are you coming with me?" "With you, or With you?"
Take care!
You're in it now, Season 3 is my favourite.
It is jaw droopingly good.
season 3 is a masterpiece
Pasake Bossmang!
But in the immortal and wise words of Yoda, _No… there is another…_
Not gonna spoil who it is though.
He's quite far ahead already.
Thank you so much for the kind words, my friend...they honestly mean the world to me :)
Also I really appreciate the heads up (keep those warnings coming)!
I was warned a few episodes ago and haven't watched the intro since :)
@@WarpReactor Honestly, it wouldn't have mattered. That's why they put it in the intro.
@@kirkdarling4120 Yeah, but still. It can really takes away the "Oh, wow!" factor right out of the gate. Don't know why they decided to do it that way, but think it was a mistake IMO.
@@tkn41 Screen Actors' Guild regulations. They were contractually required to put that there.
"They have to get you off the table Avaserela."
Well about that, they have to remove one party off the table, doesn't have to be the smaller ship, necessarily.
"Did you have a bad dream?"
Loving your reactions, Warp.
@@kevintaylor7627 caught that too in editing! Thank you for the kind words, my friend!
@@WarpReactor I only clocked it while watching your reaction! Wild stuff!
15:03 weeeelllll…..
Make sure you tell them that.'
Interesting that our reaction depends on whom is issuing the threat.
So, you mentioned the Mandalorian. What Star Was shows have you seen and do you intend to review any you haven't?
P.s. Get well soon.
You will not be disappointed by the Amos x Bobbie interactions.
4 episodes from now... I hope that video is a long one :) a veerrrry long one.
One of the best seasons of TV of all time! Enjoy the ride!
So happy to share in your journey! Can't wait for the next few episodes!
You know what the best thing is? The show just gets better and better every season :D
Yup, best space combat in the show - so far 😁
Worlds collide! This show is amazing. More to come too ❤
So, it's true then? We are getting two episodes per week, at least for season three? If so, thank you! the thought of waiting four weeks to see your reaction to what all of this is building up to was hard to bear.
I don't think that has been implied at all. What has been implied is that occasionally there will be a 2-episode week. Frankly, for this I am glad. It will all be over too soon at twice the pace.
I dont want to be a Spoiler, but DO NOT watch s3ep5 while sick.
@@MattNolanCustom I can see both sides of the argument. It doesn't bother me but would have appreciated a single line that explained the need for it.
@@Kuonji So you want less show and more tell?
Just kidding. At this point, you have to give the writers some credit. If they show them using air hoses for their suits, let's assume that there is a perfect in-universe reason for that, that the writers simply decided not to explain.
