How can you clone something that is dead?
You keep ignoring my emails and text messages, so I have to try here, where is my sons Switch? You lost it promised a replacement and then NOTHING!!!!
@BryanRees233 what emails and messages? Buddy, I showed my emails literally on screen a few days ago on a live stream and there are absolutely none unread. I don't know where you're emailing, but it 100% isn't getting to me. Have you emailed directly from the site, www.thecod3r.repair like I suggested several months ago? Thanks for the video; it gives a better understanding of how these people think about repairs.
yup,
"intentional defection of a product in order to scam customers for more money" is in fact,
planned obsolescence.
Which i thought had been patented by Apple....
Businesses are only "green" up to the point where it hits them financially.
And even when they claim to be green they aren't. Because there is no such thing as a green company.
Microsoft were probably horrified as to how many Xbox Ones were salvaged and made sure it wasn't going to happen with the Series X and S. Still, if you think they're bad, look at what Apple get up to! We need that right to repair law.
Nah Microsoft is even worse than Apple
😅🤣😂🤣😅Just look a what Sony are doing right now
Nah, I don't believe that. most likely it has something to do with their protection methods, cause it makes no sense to lock someone out from getting into their ecosystem.
@@559925na Apple are worse serioulising parts really Apple
They generally lose money on the consoles but make money on the games.....
Phil, good to see you making a success of your business. Proof that hard work can get you where you want to be. Keep it up and all the best.
Thanks for the video, you're doing great job out there. I'm happy I found your channel, we should let everyone know what Microsoft is doing. People should have a right to repair their consoles without this data protection bs
They probably have a service tool to replace the ssd for warranty repairs, but they're never going to give it way. Fixing second hand consoles instead of buying new ones is bad for their profits.
*sort of* but don't they sell at a loss because it's a vehicle for getting Gamepass subscriptions?
@@Warlock_UKthat’s not what “selling at a loss” means. It’s a common thing that people don’t understand it because the term itself is almost a lie.
They are making money off each console sold BUT it’s classed as selling at a loss until r&d and production costs have been recovered.
For example ps5 released “selling at a loss” but due to the high sales by August 2021 it was no longer selling at a loss.
@@EelofTheTRIMS Factoring in R&D, of course - though they could offset that elsewhere. Initially (well, in 2022) it was hinted that a series X could cost $500 - $700 to manufacture. Whether or not that includes a fraction of R&D isn't known - but still, if the current per unit manufacture cost is more, then they're doing it to get people to buy accessories, gamepass etc etc.
Whereas Sony don't currently make a loss, neither do Nintendo.
@@Warlock_UKhinted and actually is are very different things. What you have to remember is most of the time when people do this they are treating it as making the console themselves and not factoring in that massive contracts for millions of each part will cost far far far less per individual part which brings production costs down drastically.
Though the chip shortage at the start of the generation most likely drove prices high this time around though.
Their policies are bad for profits. Xbox is not doing well. This won't help them.
This happened to me i got burned for 100 eur , was said to be not working after a storm , turned to be robbed of the ssd and broken beyond repair, never buying a series console for repair .
Nothing is stopping Microsoft from releasing an image file with an unpaired drive, waiting to be paired. Unless the motherboard chip that stores that pairing information is a write-once chip and it's gets fused off after pairing.
Frankly component pairing should be illegal. Not just for consumer electronics like this, but for everything. Mercedes has been doing it for about 20 years. An arrow on your dashboard broke? You can't replace a part on their car without going to their shop and paying their extortionist prices.
140 quid is extremely reasonable, it's not just the parts it's your expertise
Why don't Microsoft have a OSU1 UPDATE for the Series X to fix the constant failures of the SSD ?
It's still encrypted anyway with a OSU but saving the Series X from tens of thousands of ewaste , oh that's logic i forgot !
Same issue with the old disc drives married to the motherboard but at least you could change the daughter board or extract the key
What folk need to remember is you can pick up a Working Series X for less than £200. I got a virtually brand new one with controller and all boxed as new for £200 off gumtree. Much less hassle and saving you a big headache trying to get a broken one fixed. These companies need to stop using weird screws as well, having to buy special tools just to fix a game controller is ridiculous. Why can't they just use normal screws.?! Great video and informative.👍
"Why can't they just use *normal* screws?"
You just answered your own question. They don't want normies fixing things easily if there's even a 0.01% chance they might just buy another.
arnt the screws just T8 or T10 screws or similar?
@@BetweenTheLyons bosch also use T10 or t8 screws its a manufacturing thing.
Because the tool you need it's them who sell it guaranteed
My friend did this to a Series X that he bought broken about a two years ago. The console was damaged by a power surge and stop working according to the original owner, he sold it to him for 125.00 US. I told him that I think he needed to replace certain chip (can't remember the name of it) and recommended that he take it to a repair shop because fine soldering would be required and the chip was hard to come by. He kept insisting that he'd fix it himself and told me that it's probably something simple. I offered to buy the unit off him for 175.00, he refused and proceeded to format the SSD (without backing it up or trying to clone it). I had warned him that people were saying that you can't mess with the SSD because the unit will be useless without it. Now whenever I visit him, I remark about how lovely his 125.00 paperweight is!
There are purposes in lessons but i wouldnt sprinkle salt in this wound. Smart people learn from mistakes of others.
It won't be long before someone figures it out and it'll work again.
It'll only take 1 dev to get annoyed.
PlayStation tried this and failed, xbox/Microsoft is not special, someone will hack it.
Wait till u mess up real good hes gonna rinse u for the rest of ur life bro
My guess is they stripped it down to pull the SDD (legal requirement for auction houses this stuff is normally from bailiff companies) and didn't care about if the console was working after that as it was getting lumped into an auction.
ignorant people not wiping the drive but physically trashing the console to get the drive.
@@highrider9168 Not ignorant just people that by law have to REMOVE the drive and dont get paid enough to care.
@@pilksuk I'm confused. Why are they legally required to remove the SSD?

@@pilksuk Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying. That's a good law and I wish they had it in the US. So they decided to throw out the drive instead of having it professionally reset to factory settings becuase it would have cost them money and/or time to get it certified?
Człowieniu jaki Ty masz zajebiscie medialny głos. Siedzimy i słuchamy Ciebie jak zahipnotyzowani.
Someone needs to figure out how to extract the key off the CPU. Pairing it to the SSD is a boneheaded idea, and why I will never get one of these bricks.
I've always hated Microsoft getting into the games console business. Sega was so much more in tune with the history and so much less anti consumer. They also took risks!
@@YourPrivateEyewee need them back!
@@YourPrivateEyeThe PSX was 299$ msrp in 1995 which would be around 620$ today, also not very consumer if you go by that logic. And you left out the fact that the Saturn was technically more powerful and advanced then the PSX (harder to develop for, especially in that time, but still more powerful if handled by a competent developer). It also had the ability to upgrade system memory, another thing which was out of the question on the PSX. The saturns architecture was much more complicated but had way more potential due to its multiprocessor design which is why it cost more. There are preview builds out there from Shenmue running on the Saturn and they look better then anything ever released on the PSX which only shows how much potential this console really had.
@@YourPrivateEyeStill around, they're a huge company in Japan and still make and publish games, Alien Isolation for example. They just don't make consoles anymore.
I was thinking more of the reverse... there's plenty of SSD controllers that have mptools available that let you change _anything_ about the SSD, including name it identifies as, serial number etc. ... essentially make a 1-2TB SSD that has a controller with mptools available pretend to be an original xbox SSD via the serial and model whitelist. That obviously wouldn't work here, but _could_ be an upgrade solution for all the crippled 512GB consoles like the series S where buying an expansion card isn't worth it cause it costs more than the whole console is worth
I would be returning it to the auction house explaining that by removing the drive and withholding/destroying it permanently ruins the console, they should at least advise this pre auction,

They did the same thing with 360 disc drives, couldn't just replace them, you had to flash the new drive with the old ones code, bound to the machine like their hds.
SSD’s dont last forever thats a ridiculous move from microsoft!
That's why he refers to it as Planned Obsolescence, cause they know the consoles will be dead in like 3-4 years.
Ok but with Sony is even worse. If ssd failed you can trash your ps5. Ok, you always can swap ssd but if you don’t have the right equipment you need to send your console to a specialist but I think it will be very expensive.

So glad I folked out £245 at cex for the 2tb official memory card. I hope this variation that's coming out might be the way to go. But I'll stay tuned with you and wait and see hopefully my series X doesn't f up.

Microsoft needs to make available as a downloadable file, the last known good signed partition in the XBox Account of the user.
That could well result in reducing the number of dead consoles.
In that case someone could bring it's XBox for repair to a local fixer, with the partition in an USB stick or by e-mail.
Never gonna happen. The goal is for them to make more money. System dies. By new system. System dies from age. Buy next system gen console. Rinse and repeat.

Great informative video our kid 👍🏼
I'd be demanding my money back from the auction house due to them knowingly selling me something that is basically permanently bricked
Auctions are normally sold as seen / buyer beware.
You don't get the protections that ebay offer.
😂
The encryption code must be in the eeprom you could try to copy the eeprom from another X-box and clone the drive from the same X-Box! You then have a drive that matches the eeprom!
Assuming they don't toss em or used some other company to remove it, the auction house can probably fetch the SSD back to him if he contacted them
just a quick question, as a lamen who know's little to nothing about repairing consoles, I was just wondering - could you not get a broken console with a mathcing board and ssd then place it into that xbox to get that one working or does the removal of the ssd go deeper than just the motherboard, ?. the reason i ask is in mobile phones I.E apple you have to remove a chip and a board and you can just replace the bothe to make the phone work, you can not just replace one of the parts, great video, just popped up in my feed, thanks for your time.
17:16 Thanks for posting bro! Subbed!
At least you tried mate, microsoft need to get their act together. But also, the ps5 isn't that much better with their non-removable ssd, but at least theirs isn't married to the motherboard and a technician has a chance to fix it
If you're confident in soldering, you can at least put a new one in a PS5. Still not ideal but at least it's not bound to the console.
I woke up a bit late today and I've been going through some old hardware and I'm sure I've personally got one of these with the nexus chip. Please advise if I should take it to China for repair or what would you recommend? Cheers.
Hello mate I’ve finally got around to packing up our broken Switch Lite if you’re still ok to take a look? 🙏
Hey mate. Yeah by all means. If you get it sent over to me I'll do my best on getting it going for you
We live in a time where manufacturers don't build things to last anymore they build them to be disposable like new cars for example.
I only buy consoles directly from Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo these days. Usually not at launch because they either sell out in 10 seconds or sometimes the launch models have typical problems like getting bricked with no power or a faulty disc drive.
I do enjoy watching this channel now and them. The sponsorship ads do put me off watching. It's not enough for me to subscribe, But the one thing that stops me from ever subscribing is when creators beg for the viewers to subscribe.

Because it failed, or became corrupted... and the original is missing....
Because some people are dumb.

@@scottneil1187 true
Same thing with Nintendo Switches. The CPU and the SSD are bound. Remove the SSD, then you can completely forget about repairing said Nintendo Switch.
Xbox AND Nintendo need to do something about this, because data protection is a genuine concern if selling a broken device to someone that can fix it. Why? Well if your credit card, paypal, bank or other is linked to the console on one of the accounts with auto-sign-on enabled, they can make as many purchases to their heart's content.
They could fix it so easily. Even if you sell a faulty xbox and your card payment is on there, m$/nintendo could just prompt for authorisation using your banking phone app when trying to buy a game.
@@robsta1980 That's certainly a possible fix to prevent fraudulent purchases (like Steam does with Paypal login), but the problem is that they just don't do that.

And what if, "the idiot who worked on this", *is actually the customer that bought it who opened it and left all the screws missing 😅
Good video, learned quite a bit on the xbox one console, thanks for sharing.
Good video, sad result. Thanks for sharing.
I do kinda get the removal of the SSD. There are times when I have donated certain PC's to charity, but I understand how to securely erase the contents of a HD, in particular a mechanical type.
If the PC is only suited to a tip then I have considered physically damaging the non-working HD - if it could not be salvaged, to ensure the actual contents of the platters are not recoverable.
With that mindset of feeling the need to be secure I personally would have absolutely zero understanding of the possible consequences of removing an SSD from an X-Box, as shown. Apart from protecting data and just meaning a new SSD is needed, not knowing how MS has linked them. Nor understanding about the levels of encryption by std on those SSD's.
Ignorance , perhaps, over intent to create such an issue as shown here could well apply.
That resolve, if they are interested, is down to MS to resolve.......good luck there.
As noted in the comments already, if MS are to blame here then Apple better keep their heads down. The "rights to repair" only goes so far.............
that SSD is so accessible!
They have had keys for hdd/ssd since the og xbox.
This is why you should get a cheap prebuilt or build your own PC. You can absolutely change things out without many issues. Just think, you can upgrade.

Microsoft could easily sell new SSDs that will work, you would just have to provide the console serial number to MS and they could post you a new disk that's got the OS on it etc that's been encrypted using their private key.
This could easily solve the amount of broken series consoles being reduced. Although I think the back sticker is also important.
Ps5 has the same issue, SSD failure due to always being on, looking and downloading updates, etc, so its always checking
What data are they trying to protect anyway? FIFA saves? It's a game console, not a PC, there's no sensitive user data on it.
Presumably, Xbox Live accounts, with associated credit cards. Seems pretty sensitive to me.
Live accounts and credit cards / pay pal accounts are sensitive.
Eh?. You're clearly stuck in the past. There's just as much sensitive data as there is on your pc and phone these days, been that way for at least 3 console generations.
Ur personal data obviously credit card details email address etc
So the bottom line is that Xbox Series X consoles only last the life of the SSD which is 3-4 years.
Xbox Series X consoles will never be retro machines in the future!! well done Microsoft.
You can't get statistics from one video and one device
That's what they want anyway... They don't like the idea of people digging out an older console and putting a disc in playing a game that you own.
They want you to buy a new digital-only console and spending a fortune on downloadable content and digital games....
.... and then buying another shiny new console because your old one either died within a few years or less or became obsolete.
Just do what MS recommends and DON'T use the instant on (sleep) method to power down the console. The full power off only takes 4-5 seconds to turn back on again and there is no use of the SSD while its off. While sleeping its always polling the ssd, reducing its longevity, so just turn it properly off.
Unless it gets hacked. Tale as old as time! Still no less egregious, and I wish companies weren't so scummy!
One of the microsoft staff was it Phil, saying that they want people just to know xbox when buying.
I don’t understand why they don’t just factory reset the console? Or make sure you have a passkey on your account 👍
I know that the reason people steal the SSD's for whatever reason that basic function restricts the user, people know they can salvage the drive and sell it for £12 at cex.
You can fix it you can put any ssd into it along as it formatted correctly and you make a windows thumb drive ifixit have the guide

6:09 why would Microsoft do this ? What happens if the ssd is in the console but corrupts and you can't clone the key ? The ssd will be there but corrupted. On the PS5 there are 6 chips soldered to the board. You can replace 3 of them, the other 3 are paired, so it's sort of the same
Microsoft is high giving themselves this was done on purpose
Companies are only green in departments where they receive government funding to be so or it suits them financially.
