Hello! We have one more video to celebrate the launch of Super Mario Bros. Wonder and here it is. Today, we're ranking every single power-up from the Super Mario games, excluding the ones from Mario Wonder since at the time of recording, we hadn't beaten the game (check the comments for our ranking on those!). We recorded this video before Super Mario Bros. Wonder came out so those power-ups aren’t in the video, but here are our rankings now that we’ve played and finished the game!

I love the blue shell power up in new Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo DS.
It seems like in every single video I see where people talk about Mario's power ups, they reach Mario Galaxy and completely forget about the red star. Given how little it's used I can't really blame them, but it's still sad that they forget it because it feels so good to fly with it.
The Penguin Suit probably should've been higher than the Frog Suit since you forgot to mention that the former *also* has elevated swimming abilities in addition to having the same function as the Ice Flower. So it's basically just an objectively better Frog Suit, especially since Mario moves normally on land as well!
This list makes no sense. Tanooki is ranked lower than Raccoon for some reason

Ya there’s some powers where it’s just an objectively better version because it’s the same, plus other benefits.
Or the reverse where it’s identical but worse. Like the squirrel suit kinda works like the cape (diving and rising), but you get little verticality. You can bounce off an enemy to gain height but only a jump’s worth. It barely extends your flight time (although it was judged accordingly).
They did all of NSMBW dirty, propeller suit is one of my favorite and I actually prefer the ice flower to the fire flower because picking up frozen enemies and letting them slide through and knock out other enemies is so satisfying
This list is missing so many power-ups. P-wing, P-balloon, vanish cap, blue shell?? Guess it goes to show how memorable those are lol
I was about to comment about this! Thank you for also noticing. Hopefully they’ll do a part 2 after Mario Bros Wonder is out for a bit

Driller from Galaxy and now Mario Wonder and Canon Head from Mario 3D World.
Cloud Suit and Penguin Suit deserve higher. The former gives you complete freedom to generate platforms in a platformer which was a life saving ability so many times in Galaxy 2's hardest levels (it is so much more versatile than the Bubble in Wonder) and the latter is like a combination of the Ice Flower and the Frog Suit with an added slide.
Penguin suit and cloud flower should be S. Incredible design and amazing utility for both.

The Mario wing-cap in Mario 64 is underwhelming because you don't actually fly with it, you glide ever so slightly downwards, but when you try to pitch up it slows down your momentum
You guys probably already know this but Kuriboh is the Japanese name for Goomba so they’re pretty much interchangeable!

Y’all forgot the unique powerups in the Super Mario Maker series! 😞 The shellmets, SMB1 big Mario, weird/lanky Mario, dry bones shell, etc.
As a person who played and enjoyed Super Mario Land... it never occured to me that powerup you throw was a ball, and not just their interpretation of the fireball with the limited pixel design
Penguin and Cloud should be higher. I disagree with some of them, Mini Mushroom is super fun because it's challenging, but Penguin and Cloud legitimately dederves to be higher. Not only can you slide, it functions as an Ice Flower, and gives you great swimming in water.
Ans the Cloud Flower is easy S. One of the only powerups to straight up make a platform in a platformer. So useful, lots of way to use it, super floaty. Like, there's no contest, it is an S.
Otherwise pretty fair list I'd say.
I hate how Raccoon Mario has been kinda forgotten about in media, it looks better than Tanooki

Hammer suit probably works better in the 2D games than Boomerang in the 3D games… but if they added Hammer to 3D it would be worse. It aims in an arc, hard to judge verticality, and there’s not many flying enemies in 3D Mario games. You can even see how it would work in Mario Odyssey, when he captures a koopa chef and throws frying pans.
I would like to see the function of the 1Up mushroom change. I think if Mario “dies” then the 1Up mushroom should immediately respawn Mario in game in the area where he died, instead of at the checkpoint. Secondly 1Ups should not be rewarded based on coins collected or points made consecutively. Let’s give 1Up’s the respect they deserve. 🍄1Up.
Cappy doesn't count as a power-up... it's a game mechanic of a specific game... you don't pick it up mid way through your playthrough, it's just built in as a part of your power set.
To add, it’s akin to FLUDD. You can’t choose not to have it (on purpose).
P-Balloon being forgotten speaks about it's placement.
The mini mushroom was actually really cool! You can run across water and even walls in the later games! It makes beach levels and levels with rising and lowering water so much more interesting! You even get a much floatier jump and skip the stage, but to balance it out, you die in one hit. You have to be strategic and skilled to use it right! It's so interesting. The fire flower almost never has any downsides, but you have to think a little more before you use a mini mushroom or not. It also presents a fun challenge against bosses, as seen in the DS game. The mini mushroom just offers a new way to play with Mario and I appreciate it for that! Personally, it's at least a B tier.

For me, I think Penguin Suit should've been an A. It's basically a remake on the Frog Suit, though you can swim freely with Penguin Suit. I'm kinda disappointed where Ice Flower ended up in. It's dead useful, and I enjoyed it more than Fire Flower. I think Super Acorn should've been a little higher as well.
I agree with you guys on the Golden Flower. Really isn't my type of power-up. And Super Crown is absolutely weird. And though it's got good ability, it's really dumb that only Toadette can use it
Now Spring Mushroom is just so annoying. I remember in the Toy Galaxy always getting annoyed by its lag. For me, it's a D.
Now Hammer Suit is just awesome. I also had the same good feeling every time I got one. And it also clears boulders out of the way in the world maps. A well and deserved A. Same thing with Frog Suit (I was so happy when they added it in SMM2)
I can understand why you guys made Raccoon Mario on S, and I can understand why you made Tanooki Leaf on B. Raccoon Mario is a drop better than Tanooki Leaf, and is a VERY iconic power-up. First flying power-up👏
I would do some changes to this tier list, but I respect your point of view, guys, and I see what you were rating them based on. So I would say another fantastic tier list. I just love the way you guys think.

I don't think 3-Up Moon, Lucky Cat Bell, Statue Leaf, P-Wing, P-Acorn, Invincibility Leaf, Invincibility Cat Bell, and Giga Cat Bell are considered seperate power-ups. They just boost your abilities.
I trust you guys, so I'm sure you left all the above (and some more power-ups I probably missed) out for a good reason.
Without the mushroom, you get no power up. Sure it's generic now, but It's also a more important element to Mario's Legacy than the man himself, right up there with that first Goomba, teaching you the mechanics of Mario. It's not a great power up, but it's probably the most important, and I don't think anyone can properly describe the moment they accidentally touched it for the first time in Super Mario.

Fun Fact: In the original Super Mario, getting hit while Fire Mario would make you small, and touching a Fire Flower while small doesnt give you fire powers. The effects of the Mushroom is what gave players that much needed extra hit, and you needed that Mushroom to even use the Fire Flower.
I always thought the star itself called Starman, but gives the Super Star effect. And i hoped we would see Bee Mario return in the Wonder's Flower Kingdom, but i haven't seen him (yet?).
NCL really knew kitosan missed the frog suit and gave him Dolphin Kick in Wonder lol
I got scared for a bit. Thought Cat Mario was getting an A. That is my favorite Mario Power up ever.
Hammer Bros suit is my personal favorite power up. Cape feather is also amazing
I always wished for the cape to return but I know that if it did, it would have to be nerfed hard into the ground. The unlimited flight potential would be the biggest one no doubt.
I love that power-up so much and I felt that if any Mario game could have had something awesome to do with it, it would have been Oddessey. If only for the movement system in that game. It had a very physics based influenced movement system where your momentum really could make you jump far and run really fast. The cape would have been PERFECT for that kind of movement system IMO.
They should've done more with Cloud Mario, i just think it's a really cool concept. I also love the Ice Flower in galaxy where you can ice skate over magma
Cloud suit is interesting, but it’s also kinda weird. In an open sandbox, it makes more sense. In a linear level… not really. It’s more fun to have those tiles that switch sides when you jump, as a challenge to get from point A to B, than having an empty gap and long-jumping with Cloud Mario. It doesn’t feel like your input is meaningful. There might as well just be platforms there anyway.
Cool concept, and underutilized, I agree. But most of the other abilities have more universal purpose. In that, they’re useful _and_ fun to use in any situation. Whereas Cloud really needs a level tailored around it to feel good. Otherwise it’s just kinda there to avoid enemies with your own path (if possible) or a way to catch you from making mistakes (kinda like the NSMB air spin). I think one way it might be more fun, is more limitations. Instead of a 3 cloud limit, it’s 1, but also only lasts a few seconds. Kinda like playing “the floor is lava” / “hot potato”. As is, it basically just makes the game easier, and there’s no skill in using it (like the cape) to make it fun or worth the trade-off.
You guys forgot the Blue shell in NSMB DS
I noticed you missed a few power ups like the P Wing, Blue Shell, those invincible power ups, which probably belong in F tier, the P-Balloon, the vanish cap, and probably some more that I am missing.
Of all the things I will defend Super Mario Land for, the Superball Flower is not one of them 😂

Yoshi should be on this list! I get that he's another character, but he's also the best power up in Super Mario World!!
You gave pretty fair rankings. I'm not a fan of the Bee Suit, and as much as I love the Galaxy games, I dont love their power ups. All you can do with the Bee suit is fly awkwardly for a limited time and hope you don't land in water. I'll still take Tanooki over Raccoon; the video you showed proved how useful the statue is. Tanooki, Hammer, Cape, and Cat suits are all S tier for me. Propeller and Penguin suits are both A tier. I did not like the spring suit in Galaxy or the flying squirrel suit in NSMBU at all.
I think a good rule of thumb is how many functions does a power-up have;
3 or more = S/A
2 = B
1 = C
1 with 2 or more negative mechanics/weaknesses = D
Power-ups can't be S rank if a similar one exists with more mechanics and a better version is always a rank above the inferior one.
I'm sad Krysta didn't die on the hill of Boomerang Flower because I legit enjoy that one and Kit is just wrong about it being worse than Hammer Bros. Also the Invisibility Cap didn't even rank... ouch.
Bee Mario deserves B tier. Nothing better Krysta. These tier lists need to be somewhat credible. Come on now.

Tanooki suit has all the same functionality of the Raccoon suit, plus an extra feature. Yet it's 2 tiers lower?

I know I’m not the only one that noticed the invisible cap from Mario 64 was forgotten in this tier list, right?
The Bee suit should be in the B-Tier. Penguin Suit should be in S Tier. Ice Flower should be in A-Tier. Giant mushroom should be in C-Tier.
The Wing Cap isn’t as good as other flying power-ups because you lose a lot of your vertical momentum after that 1st/2nd dive. Unlike the cape which can last indefinitely if you’re skilled.. Feels like an overcorrection from “infinite” to “barely functional”. It already has a timer, they could’ve made it work better.
My 2 favorites have always and will always be raccoon mario from SMB3 and cape mario from SMW.
I think Bee Mario is probably why I love Galaxy 2 over Galaxy

Love the video, for me tho there were some placements that irked me: starman and double cheery being c is absolutely criminal, Star is an s or at least high a and double cherry is b cuz it’s just so cool to have your own army!
Hammer Mario and boomerang need to switch cuz boomerang was wayyyy easier to control, those hammers are in an arch so you practically have to be super precise to hit anything.
Penguin is just better frog and tanooki is just better tail Mario. But otherwise pretty accurate!!

Bee Mario is not S Tier sorry Krysta but Kit had that one right. Should be at B (no pun intended) tier at best.

Hahaha. You guys hate the Super Crown, huh? Yeah...as much as I like me some New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, the Super Crown is the textbook definition of infamous. I don't really care about the confusing implications; it's moreso how folks have gone haywire in their _creations_ with it.
Conceptually, the Gold Flower is lazy. It being nothing more than a glorified coin machine doesn't do much. If it weren't for the sheer power that comes with the Gold Mario form, I'd agree with it being low-tier.
My top five power-up forms are the Mega Mushroom, Metal Cap, Ice Flower (mainly the NSMB version), Super Star, and Super Bell.

Can't believe the Tanooki suit from SMB3 was degraded so much. Does everything the Raccoon suit does and adds temporarily invinciblilty. How does an extra feature lower it 2 full grades? "not using it" is not really an excuse. Just because you don't use something mean it's worthless.

Maybe I'd bump penguin up, but really there wasn't anything in here I majorly disagree with. 1-Ups will always have a place in my heart but they became nearly irrelevant as early as Super Mario World when you could start saving your game whenever you wanted to. They do get a resurgence in the simultaneous multi-player games...but oddly enough that's usually because your fellow players are screwing you up more than the game is...or at least in is in my house. XD
