I love the penguin suit because I hit a question block and am all like "oh, dang, is this a penguin suit level?" And then a private militia of loosely organised neo-Confederates crash an SUV through my living room window to execute me for my crimes against the Grand Wizard.
The penguin suit also sllows u to slide on water and not slip on ice

The Bubble Flower is a speedrunner's wet dream. You can jump on the bubbles and cross gaps without the need for standard platforming.

Yeah hes gonna mention shellmet/shell boat but not builder, SMB2, or the master sword power ups like i can get not ranking them since their availability, and by extention functionality is hard to properly rank since its a level maker game but they should at least be mentioned

@@jestry7246 Yes, but those are a bit different because the same power-up works differently in the 3 games that they are in. SMB3 Tanooki Suit ≠ SMB3 Tanooki Leaf, but SMB3 Tanooki Suit = 3DLand Stone Leaf
You know what genuinely baffles me? The fact that there's no electric power up. Fire, Ice, and Electricity have been the trifecta of elemental powers in video games. We've had fire since forever and ice about half or the life span, so how the hell have we not had a Thunder Mario after 30+ years!?

Isn't it funny that the Fire Flower, the first actual power up, is still one of the best despite never really getting a meaningful update. They made something so functional and funky on their first try. You're never mad about getting a Fire Flower and Mario works really well in white and red.
Back then there was also no competition, free design space. Now they need to make something that is both different and good compared to what we already have.

I agree. It (true to what its x and y axises represent) is functional and funky. It has this chaotic but also controlled and organized feel to it.

I thought it was going to be my least favorite power up going into wonder, but I actually really liked the Bubble Flower. There is a lot of techniques you can pull off, and experimenting with it is classic mario fun.

Honestly, I’m more curious about how these power ups will be portrayed in the films. Cause some of them could probably turn into something very cinematicly cool.
I love how some power ups are just upgrades to past power ups. Like the Penguin suit> ice flower. Tanuki leaf statue > Tanuku leaf
The thing is that they are upgrades to power ups that debuted in the same game as them. lol
@@Magnet_Chaos The ice flower actually didnt debut in NSMBWii, it appeared first in Mario & Luigi Partners in Time, and then appeared again in Super Mario Galaxy before appearing in NSMBWii in its current form.
@@ThundagaT2 I feel that's just semantics. Specially since the function is different there than in the other games. Like yeah you are technically correct (the best kind of correct). But still just technically.
Their gameplay applications in NSMB Wii were new to the series in that game. And that same game introduced a straight upgrade.

The Elephant Apple is probably one of the funniest things the Mario series has cooked up. Maybe not the most unique in terms of abilities, but it lands squarely into the *FrEaKy* part of the Funky slider.
That's not to mention the sheer horror that it caused through out the fanbase, THAT was comedy gold, and I'm convinced Nintendo knew exactly what they were doing, so I will 100% give them credit for that.

Oh yeah that was very much intetional according to one of the persons that worked on the game every concept design and idea were all ideas they had for a long time but just never bother to do there was even this unreleased yoshi game which some peeps theorize was the basis for super mario bros wonder now i dont even though the music does have some yoshis island refrences in there
I love the Elephant Apple so much. It's like at least a 7 in function and 7-8 in funk for sure.
So much better than a tier list. Though i actually think the red star is one of the best powerups mario ever had. It just didn't get used enough. And i think it makes sense for it to be timed. In the same way that flowers mostly act similar, so do stars. Bolth super star and red star give you a wildly overpowered ability, but only for a limited time. And both have really nice musical tunes to go with them that really fit the feeling of the ability.
Where's the 1-up? WE NEED THE 1-UP!!!

im surprised a mario game where power ups were the primary focus hasn't happened yet. like, they'll choose one to be the game's main power up and put a lot of focus on it, but why hasn't there been a mario game where the focus was on a bunch of different power ups that see equal use.
Bubble Flower is kinda cool tbh, The Toads look pretty fresh with it and speedrunners can pop off with it

I used bubble almost every time I could, it’s absolutely my favorite. Has so much application with jumping off of the bubbles. If anything, I hardly touched the drill one at all. You can go into the floor and ceilings which is cool I guess, but I feel like it has less application. Love attacking enemies from above my drilling into them though.
Also the fact he put the bubble flower below drill is insane considering it doesn't have much uses since the ceiling is gone in most levels of wonder, plus the badges make the drill mushroom seem...optional.

I disagree with the double cherry assetment. You're forgetting it allows for you to control multiple characters using say the fire flower, allowing you to create a firing squad. That puts it on this weird z axis where by itself it's exactly where you placed it, but when stacked with other power ups, it quickly goes up the funky and functional lines. I also feel like while being funky is cool, functionality mattters way more. For example, mario Galaxy's power ups, they by far changed his outfit the most, and the games beautiful, but the power ups suck for the most part, being so restrictive that you're really only using them to solve puzzles rather than because you want to. Seriously, if you could use them all indefinitely, in any level, would you? No, not at all. And that's not a detractor from galaxy, it just shows the base gameplay is so good that the power ups aren't necessary.
Take a shot everytime Alax changes the thumbnail of a video. Lol

In a rom hack called Newer Super Mario Bros DS, the blue shell is changed into the hammer bros suit. You can still slide with it, but you have to go down a slope first.

I think the Tanuki always has a special place in my heart, but I can't deny how much use the Propeller and cat suits got when I would play their respective games with my friends. Like you said, the best-looking ones are usually the most useful.
Light block is way more funky and useful than golden coin block.

I gotta be the guy that brings it up: The Super Mario 3D World game has the Lucky Cat Bell power-up, which is a sort of bastard love-child of the Super Bell & the Tanooki Suit.

Bubble Flower is way underrated. In a game with no verticality powerups, the bubble flower does it's best impression of the Cloud flower to make it so much more interesting.
Also, Drill mario can hit enemies from below with his hat.
I will not forgive dissing the absolute hype factor of being able to fly with total control, yes I agree it’s basically useless, however being able to fly around the observatory was so cool as kid, and the music that plays is one of 3 songs that give me goose bumps every time I listen to it, the others being Gusty Garden Galaxy’s theme, and the original not the remake In The Final which is the Mario And Luigi Bowser’s Inside Story final boss theme.

Something I never see talked about with the Super Crown is that it’s, from what I remember, functionally identical to the Super Acorn. You get a glide, a second jump…only one character can use it. Why

I love me the Axes of Funk. That being said, I'd give Metal Cap and Super Star a few extra style points. They may only last for a short time, but the music tracks for them are iconic.
Also, they make you chrome and/or glowy rainbow. That's points for funk in my books!
I feel like Axis Of Funk should be in more future videos if it can produce that funky tune in the end.

I feel this needs a 'fun to boring' axis because, well it's kinda important to the whole point of the game. As a lot of those powerups you rated 'low' like the bubbleflower, cannon hat, Shell suit, and Inviz cap are absolutely fun.
There should also be a 'designer friendly vs. hazardous' axis. The Feather can absolutely bust design if introduced in a ROMhack as the sheer amount of tools it gives you to deal with enemies breaks the game in half. (Which is why Tanooki has been used ever since, as it's power level is more in line with the other options) And the benefit of the temporary power ups is that they are inherently self-containing, as you can't just bring a starman to the next level. Which makes most of the Galaxy powerups so cool, as they can be introduced when fun, but you arn't just allowed to take Bee Mario to the Bowser levels and cheese the hell out of the platforming.
The Super Crown is just a worse Squirrel Suit in terms of functionality. It lets you glide and you get one extra jump, just like the squirrel suit, but it’s missing the ability to cling to walls.
I dunno man, I feel like the 3 major power-ups in Wonder are all really good ones.
Bubble Flower. It's the bubble Yoshi in New Soup U but now it's an actual power-up. Gives you an edge in platforming since you basically always have something to bounce off of, and it can be really busted if you know how to use it well (case and point: the rhythm jump level beaten without wonder flower). Also I don't see any cloud flower users kill any enemies across a wall.
Elephant Fruit. Yeah, Mario looks kinda wacky when he turns into an elephant, but with this power-up you have a melee attack with pretty wide range, can break blocks from the side, break multiple rows or blocks from below, deflect spike balls, run across gaps that are two blocks wide, and the water mechanic adds a bit of an extra flavor too despite being situational.
Drill Mushroom. Probably my least favorite of the 3 new power-ups in Wonder, since it can be a bit too situational. But you can pop some spiked eneies from below, and prevent those pesky ceiling turtles from ambushing you. Also, since Mario's primary attacking method is stomping enemies below him, and his top can be defenseless, giving him a power-up that allows him to attack something above him just makes sense.

ok no you can't dunk on the elephant looking weird and out of place (which I agree with) without saying cat mario completely breaks the flow of every level and feel of the mechanics despite the game being made for it and saying that's what makes this glorified fursuit FUNKY
The elephant's functionality being able to break bricks and slap big enemies is high tier though still beaten by cat cuz it just climbs everywhere and moves faster
