The colors of the stars tip blew my mind. Never realized that I've been overexposing them. thanks! I love my EM1iii, I rented it to compare to my G9 and was so impressed I just kept it. The live composite, liveND, and HHHR make it a camera unlike any other.

I was about to ask a question on my EM1 Mk3... and then the part of this video where you turn the knob to B from M is what solved my problem. My EM10 Mk 3 just accessed Live Composite on Manual Mode. Thank you for these amazing videos. Now I just need some clear skies on a night close to a new moon.

Thanks for this video. I have used the live composite feature a lot here in Denmark. But it is on the Olympus Tough TG-6. I was not aware of this feature, when I bought the camera in 2020, but I have used it a lot - it is very funny to use. It is even more simple to use than on your camera, and the are no problems with the autofocus on the stars - it is almost always ok. My camera choses the exposure time, and at night it is always from 3 to 15 seconds depending on the brightness of the night. Just like you have seen on your picture the stars in fact have different colors and I am impressed with the sensivity of the camera regarding these colors. It is best to take the star pictures on totally cloudless nights - even small drifting clouds can ruin it all. It is also best on dry nights. Humidity will in some way reflect citylights and make the pictures more unclear and redish.
It is always interesting to see what comes with on these pictures. Planes are difficult to avoid - they produce a row of lights on the picture. I have also caught meteors and satellites reflecting the sunlight (satellite flares) - they are quite normal. Only the brightest non-flaring satellites are on my pictures like a long line. The ISS is of course very easy to catch. I even have a picture where it comes twice. The picture was taken ever two hours. On another picture the ISS continues from over Germany/Poland towards southeast to Ukraine where it enters the shadow of the earth and fades away (I could follow it on heavens-above.com).
Sometimes I see some dots of light in a line (short or long). I think it is rotating space junk (which is often old rocket stages). And then there is often some small blue, green and red dots on the pictures - possibly small reflections from satellites or perhaps laser emitting lidar-satellites. I even think my camera may have been hit by a laser beam from a lidar satellite because of a strange red light in one picture. Always look carefully on these pictures for strange things in the sky...

I just bought my first Oly camera, the EM5 mkiii and while I feel overwhelmed by all of the features (from my Canon ecosystem that Ive been in for decades), I am loving the features on it. Your tutorials on the different modes (live bulb, live time and live comp) have REALLY been helpful to me for understanding how they work.
I just subscribed and hope that you will do more tuts like this one; maybe to include gear for those of us that can't quite get the big boy bodies of Olympus like 1. (that Starry AF looks AMAZING though! Wish it were available on the 5mkiii)

@@chasingluminance Honestly? After tonight, I could use some help with Livecomp troubleshooting. Tonight, we had some fast moving whispy clouds so I wanted to get some stars and maybe some cloud trails. Went into LC mode, ISO1600, f3.5, 30 seconds. First press (test shot) fired OK. When the screen said ready to shoot LiveComp...the button wouldn't fire the second shot. Thought I did something wrong so I brought back into the house, it worked *perfectly*. Back outside and same problem: no 2nd press of the shutter. I tried the button and then a wired remote. No luck. Can it be TOO dark? (it really was dark tonight)

That's very strange... I wouldn't think it camera would care about how dark it is. I honestly don't know what's going on there. Maybe someone in a Facebook group or a forum would know.

I have a question about how you took the photo of the lady with the star trail at 9 minute mark. Is this a composition of two different photos? If you did it with Live Comp, how did you get such clarity on the lady? Thanks.
it was one live comp photo... I lit her for the 1st photo then asked her to move

A couple of questions. 1) once Starry Sky is activated, the focus remains regardless of how many images you take thereafter? 2) Do you set up Live View before activating Starry Sky? 3) If you have to adjust exposure time in the Live View Menu, say from 30sec to 20 sec, do you then need to re-run the Stary Sky system? Thanks.
1 - yes, it stays activated... meaning you shouldn't have to adjust focus the rest of the shoot. that's because it's activated by that back button, not the shutter button. you can click away without worrying about the AF system hunting. 2 - yes, I use live view for this. 3 - it's never a bad idea to double check your focus... but it's not necessary.
Live Composite is a great feature. I have a Panasonic G91 and it has Live Composite, too, and I love it. I have a question with the Olympus (just ordered a M1 III), when I set the time to 1 hour (or any other duration) and start the Composite do I have the possibility to stop it when I think it's done (or clouds are coming in or any other reason)? With the Panasonic I press the shutter once to start LC and then press it again when I think it's done.
The second press you mention has been as you describe since the beginning, 2013? Thanks for pointing out the time feature, I'd never set it to (say) an hour, but I'll try that.
You can press the remote at any time to end the live composite. The timer just makes it easier if you want to go to sleep, or not pay attention to when you want the process to end. I take a peek at the LCD every so often to decide when I want it to end.
If I wanted to make a custom setting start point for manual astro work for a "custom setting", and then go from there to make composite of star trails what would you suggest for a clear (hardly any city lights) dark night. Currently using the 12-40 lens but looking for 17 pro. Does one look through live view for an idea of starting point in the dark and off infinity.
Or would these be 2 different custom mode set ups since in another video not over 13 sec or so at 1600 for sharp stars. New to astro with some luck.
Great video Alex! but is Starry Sky AF available on any other OLY than the OM-D E-M1? In particular the E-M5 mark iii? The two are similar in so many ways except battery and the built-in ND. I am hoping a firmware update would add it to the EM-5 mark iii.

Hi great video but not sue what mode you have to be in when using the stary sky AF ie manual, aperture priority etc can you clarify cheers.
I'm pretty sure that doesn't matter. As long as you're in the right af mode the shooting mode shouldn't affect anything

I’m new to Astro photography but Im an avid astronomer using a Newtonian reflecting telescope which I’m hoping to adapt to attach my camera too eventually. still not quite sure what equipment I need to do this. any help would be really appreciated cheers.

if you don't have starry AF you can use live view, zoom in on a star and manually focus

@@jeffcassar8062 not all cameras come with Live Comp. You'll have to check your camera menu to see if it's available, or ask google :)
Will the EM-1X get this in a future firmware upgrade?

Thanks that was wisdom AF Star mode comes only with the em 1 mark iii or other models as well? i do have em 1 & om 5 mark ii can i still get AF Star or i need to upgrade?
Starry Sky focus is available only the OM-1 and E-M1 Mk iii, according to my google search that quoted the OM System website. I thought the OM-5 did too, but guess I was mistaken (or google is! Lol)

Starry sky is only available in mk3 and m1x.! Sadly you didn't know that.

I never used the mk2... so I can't compare, but for me the starry af is super helpful... worth the upgrade? If you spend a lot of time under the stars I'd say so!

Which leads one to wonder what you're doing on an Olympus channel. Maybe not quite that happy with your results?
