I've been reading "keeping bees in horizontal hives" and that one piece of brood comb there in the middle had an almost perfect 'bullseye' of capped brood, just like the illustration in the book! (Trying to get educated this year with the plan of getting my first hive next spring.)
I love the horizontal hive design as it is very friendly to the back. It's a great way to keep bees, and if you possess any woodworking skills, you can build your own hives. Best wishes for your successes as a beekeeper. Thanks for watching. God's peace Karla. Mr. Ed

I've been thinking for a long time that the best way to build a house is with a cast-in-situ concrete external structural wall. Seeing how many bees get in behind sheet cladding or non-structural bricks is another reason to stick with smooth solid concrete. Making the concrete the structural component means the floor framing and verandah or balcony roof framing are bolted to the concrete and not passed through it like I've seen verandah beams with bricks laid up around them after the fact. Lining the verandah and balcony ceiling is a bit each way - if it's lined, that's a space for bees to get into, and it it's not, it's a space for birds to nest. On balance, I think it's better to screen in the verandahs and balconies to make a fly- and mosquito-proof outdoor living space, and after that there's no birds or bees in the rafters so lining or not is just aesthetic. And in fire zones, verandah and balcony screening is a fire safety measure anyway.
We did not find the queen, but I requeened the hive and they are doing very well. I hope to do a follow up video showing it's progress. God's peace Bill. Mr. Ed

Coffee and cutouts makes for a great morning Thanks. Did you put the brood on the foundation, I liked the foundation template , I am going to make one. Iv only done two small cutouts his spring But that has started me off with 2 hives for 2023 my goal is to have 10 viable hives by oct 23. I seem to pick up at least one new tip with every vid I watch Thanks a lot for making them. Hey good time Charlie THANK YOU TO.
The measuring template is a great tool to have as it gives the perfect sized comb for a frame....especially when it's "slab" type comb. Happy to offer tips, and I'm glad to hear you find them useful. Good luck with growing your apiary, I know you will reach your goal. God's peace Dennis. Mr. Ed

The bigger they are, the harder they fall. This was a really nice hive, and though we did not find the queen, I requeened the hive and they are doing very well. God's peace. Mr. Ed
A robber bee and a hive bee look exactly alike, after all, they are all bees. How to distinguish the two is by their behavior. A robber bees "act" nervous by being very flighty whereas a hive bee will behave as if it belongs there by landing and walk around unconcerned because they are familiar with the location. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace. Mr. Ed

What happens to queens that get lost like that. Do they just die or does another hive adopt them? I'm thinking the former, but hoping the later...seems such a waste. And you said she had a big old butt full of eggs too. 😔
Unfortunately, there is little hope for the queen at that point. Since she does not have the colony to help her, she will perish. However, the rest of the colony can go on after another queen is introduced so at least that part is good. Thanks for watching. God's peace Carole. Mr. Ed
Never did get the queen, but I did requeen the colony and they are doing great. Stay tuned for the update video in about 6 weeks. God's peace Drew. Mr. Ed
Hey Mr Ed!! It's so wonderful to see you!! That hive was massive!! I hope you found the Queen. Did they all fit into one hive box or did you need to split it into two??
I'm always happy when I hear from someone in the Aussie contingent, I'm humbled that someone from so far away would care what a lone bee wrangler in Louisiana is doing. The way I can tell the difference is the way the bee behaves. Believe it or not, they act guilty by flying around the hive nervously as if they know they should not be there. The other way I can tell is by the mask they are wearing. Thanks so much for watching. Until the next one, God's peace Heather. Mr. Ed

Good Morning. A couple of questions. As a fellow beekeeper, I'm wondering how long this colony has lived there. Are you seeing feral colonies that have developed mite resistance? Don't those gloves make your hands sweat? I'd be pouring sweat out of my synthetic gloves after 30 minutes.
My guess was about 2 years. I think feral bees can and have developed certain mite resistance. Yes the do make my hands sweat, but it's not that bad. Thanks for watching and asking. God's peace. Mr. Ed

What happened is you didn’t have your queen catcher and you should have a GoPro on your chest. So you didn’t bring the right equipment we should’ve had a big ladder and a small ladder just saying.
Yall can blame all these exercise videos that people are watching for the queen cutting flips and flopping around. Hope you got here and that was a monster hive! Have a Jesus weekend and God Bless!
oh my word you should've dropped that comb, the waste would be minimal comparing to losing the queen, I mean, you'd lose one comb, not the entire hive.

What a huge hive wow mr ed you got a big hive also good time Charlie better get a nap might take awhile 😊God bless Mr ed good time Charlie thanks for sharing all your experience how can you tell robber bees from Hive bees ? Good time Charlie was ready 2 shirts 😂
Thank you so much for your blessings, kind words, and for all the time you spend watching our bee wrangling adventures, it is ALL greatly appreciated. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
Charlie I had a similar one last week and I just sucked the queen up in the vac because if I fumbled her she would have been in the bottom of a wall somewhere. I didn't want to spend an extra half hour on a queen search. I got ladder bruises on my shins and aching shoulders just watching this one.
I'm still recovering from spending over 3 hours working off a ladder...no fun. Charlie told me he was glad it was me instead of him. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
That was awesome. Great bunch of bees and they looked pretty gentle.
They have settled down now, but at the time, not so much. Thanks for watching. God's peace Michael.
Mr. Ed
Jeff, No bees here today,. We have a heat wave 24 F this morning, the snow is starting to melt, will turn the heat on in the greenhouse next week. Another great video, God bless you and Charlie
Thank you Jeff and Charlie !!
I was up late watching you guys and I truly enjoyed your content 😂 I hope you found the Queen ❤🐝
Unfortunately, we did not get the queen, but the bees were able to make a new one from the larva that I had cut out. Happy to hear you stayed up late watching, thank you for doing that and for your support. Also, I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Sorry to hear about the snow, but your spring is a coming. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
Hope you find her. Big beautiful hive. Lots of brood. Thanks for the video. God bless.
We never did find her, but I requeened them 2 days later and they are doing great. An awesome hive for sure! Thank yu for your blessing and for watching. God's peace Garry.
Mr. Ed
Mr. Ed
I do love your video's Jeff! You obviously do love bees--and so do I.
Thanks so much for sharing your time and love of them with us!

Thanks Jeff and Charley. Hard work for the good of God and His creation.
Wow lots of bees and brood. Nice
An awesome hive for sure, and very gentle bees. Unfortunately we did not find the queen. However, two days later I did requeen the colony and I'm happy to report they are doing great. I will be doing a follow up video on these girls in a few weeks, stay tuned for that. Thanks for watching. God's peace Shawn.

Interesting video. I can't imagine too my hives bigger. Appreciate your work Jeff.
Good morning, and another great video
Awesome stuff
So glad you enjoyed watching.I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. I have been rescuing bees from being needlessly destroyed for over 8 years now, and hope to continue to do so for many more years to come. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Mr.
Time for a serious trip to the barber, Shaggy...😅😂🤣
If only I was as good looking as you, but I guess it would help. Great hearing from you Tadd, always a pleasure. God's peace brother.

Actually, it's a Christmas tree trimmer, but it certainly could cut bread as well. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

I liked the template too
The measuring template is a great tool to have as it gives the perfect sized comb for a frame....especially when it's "slab" type comb. Happy to offer tips, and I'm glad to hear you find them useful. Good luck with growing your apiary, I know you will reach your goal. God's peace Dennis.

Mr. Ed
Question , how do you see what is a robber bee and witch bee belong to the hive ? Don't they all look the same?
A robber bee and a hive bee look exactly alike, after all, they are all bees. How to distinguish the two is by their behavior. A robber bees "act" nervous by being very flighty whereas a hive bee will behave as if it belongs there by landing and walk around unconcerned because they are familiar with the location. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace.

Great video Jeff. Question how do you keep the brood warm without the bees on them
Francine
I place it all in an ice chest, you would not believe how warm it keeps the comb...even for a few hours which is all I need. Any uncapped brood usually will die, but all the capped brood will survive. Thanks for watching. God's peace Francine.

My name is Jeff, but on my channel I go by the name Mr. Ed. The name "Mr. Ed" was given to me the day I began working at the Post Office back in '82. Then, for the next 27 years while working at the PO, that is what everyone called me. When I started my UA-cam channel, because I loved the name so much, I decided to call myself that.

A Big Hello from Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺. How do you tell the Hive Bees apart from the Robber Bees?. That was a Huge hive.

Mr. Ed
I like your bee wrangling videos, but 1 question, why you don't you keep a queen catching clip handy? I've seen jpthebeeman has a clip on his collar.
I always have a queen clip close at hand, either very near where I'm working or right in my top pocket. In this video, because I had both my hands full and I was working off a ladder, I missed the opportunity to catch her. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Rajeev.

Ok Mr Ed, everyone wants to know if you found the Queen. I say if you had, you would have put a little footage of that at the end. Finally Charlie has learned how to stay color coordinated with you after all of these years.
We did not find the queen, but I did requeen the colony and it is doing great. You can expect an update video on it in about 6 weeks. Yep, Charlie has learned a thing or two after spending all this time with me wrangling bees. God's peace Don.
Mr. Ed
Don't want to read all the comments, but did you find the queen?
No, I did not fine the queen, a real shame. However, the bees produced a new one, and are doing very well at the abbey. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
What happened is you didn’t have your queen catcher and you should have a GoPro on your chest. So you didn’t bring the right equipment we should’ve had a big ladder and a small ladder just saying.
Still, in the end, the bees were rescued and given a new queen, and that's a lot better than having them destroyed. God's peace Tim.
Mr. Ed
I agree it’s better then them being destroyed or killed.
Looking back on the situation, I agree with you 100%. You know what they say, hind sight is 20-20. Thanks for watching. God's peace Sarah.
Mr. Ed
Mr. Ed I love watching your show and I love your enthusiasm for Jesus Christ. But I have something hard to ask you from the position of Love. You are Catholic and I am a Protestant. When I see so many bees I have to wonder about people who say they are endangered LOL.
Hi Brother
Honey bees are not endangered. Just challenged. Wild pollinators are in danger. Cheers...
The doom and gloomers that also have about 2394 ways that the world is going to end. Not one prophecy has ever come to pass.
In many places around the world, they are endangered. However, here in Southeast Louisiana, that is not the case. I am truly blessed to live in an area so full of feral bees. Curious, do you belong to an order, and if so, which one? Thanks for watching. God's peace Brother Michael.
Mr. Ed
Next time have a ladder for Charlie so you won't have to keep going up and down and you can just hand off comb to Charlie and you'll have 2 free hands...Work smarter, not harder...
Good Time Charlie is strictly the camera guy because honey and cameras don't mix well. Usually Ralph is there for the second set of hand for the handing off, but unfortunately he missed this one. He was greatly missed. Thanks for watching. God's peace Gabriel.
