  • Selecting a Loose Diamond Shape: Round Cut vs Princess Cut
When it comes to diamond shapes, the two that stand out above the rest are the round brilliant cut and the square princess cut. Both are known for their eye catching sparkle and brilliance. The right one for you depends largely on personal taste and the different qualities of each that you find especially important.
Round or round brilliant cut diamonds are the most traditional cuts and continue to be the most prevalent in today's market. One of the reasons for the continued popularity of round diamonds is their potential for ultimate light performance, brilliance, fire and sparkle.

Both are beautiful but I personally prefer the princess cut (square, not rectangular), I think it is so beautiful. Although people debate it, I think the princess looks larger looking down at the table. For a 1ct diamond, the round is 1mm larger in length but from point to point at the chevron the princess is 1.2mm longer. So if you get a excellent 4 c's grading on a princess, you get more bang for your buck and a gorgeous ring.

I'd guess a princess cut is better than a round for a ring. Round cuts are really best seen from the top of the gem, whereas princess cuts are good at all angles. Plus, they are cheaper and are bigger which makes the ring look all the more impressive.

Just a question, in your opinion face up carat for carat to your eye does round really face up that much larger than a princess? I've seen very little video on this, and I've been to many generic B&M stores and have seen very little difference but It could be because the princess is cut shallow etc. I'm looking to compare the ACA round and princess (big price difference) which is why I wanted to get some advice on size carat for carat.

1ct example: The round would be 1mm longer in width but a prince is 1.2mm longer corner to corner. I personally think the princess looks bigger looking at the table.

Round brilliant cut was designed by a mathematician to to get the best light refraction. Has been and always will be the most illuminating cut.

I hear what you are saying but when I am looking at diamond rings at a jeweler, the princess cut catches my eye much more than the round.
