Yep. I know a lot of us like to get "Pro" stuff just to flex, but if we really consider the type of stuff we're using it for, the Air is such a good value. Having to wait a few more minutes for a render isn't going to make or break us.
Pros... or people who don't mind overspending on luxuries that they want but don't actually need. If people can afford to spend a bit extra on something they'll use close to every day, they should feel free to pay extra for more comforts, like buying a Lexus instead of Toyota.
I've owned Mac book Pros for years and no one at the store gave an in-depth explanation as you did. Thank you! My Mac Book Pro is 10 years old. I will be replacing it with a new Mac Book Air!
This has got to be one of the most insightful yet concise reviews of M1 devices I've seen so far. As an owner of an M1 Air, even if I do photo and video, I have yet to encounter problems with performance and this review just proved my point.
@@samiam5326 I don't! I have the base model (8 GB, 256 GB) but if you can spend a little more, go with what the previous commenter suggested (16 GB, 512 GB) for your device to be somehow future-proof.
I am a typical office user and I have never seen the CPU spent more than 40%. I have also 8Gb and although the performance meter often goes into yellow for memory, I never notice any performance degradation. I have 3 accounts on the machine and there the 512GB SSD comes in handy. Especially when creating videos. For work at home I have a CalDigit docking station for my external 4K display (yes one display is really enough) and with just one Thunderbolt cable it then even charges my MBA. Personally I think the MBA is just the best laptop ever. Period.
For me the 13 inch M1 MacBook Pro with 16 GB and 1 TB drive is the sweet spot for what I do. And it has the best battery life of all the M1 MacBooks. But for 98% of the people the MacBook Air is more than enough.
do you know what the specs at Costco are for the RAM and Storage? If a 16gb Ram and 512 SSD option is available, I'll definitely get it over the 14in m1 pro. Also, is this for the US or in Canada?
Thank you for the guidelines Max. Never ever I would have thought that buying Macs will be this complex despite the fact that Apple designs their own processors.
I am a Software Engineer,so these assumptions are based on that: Starters(Frontend only): M1 Air(8GB) Mid(Frontend + Backend +Emulators): M1 Air(16GB) Mid Senior(Frontend + Backend + Emulators): M1 Pro 14 inch(16GB,8CPU,14GPU) Senior(Frontend + Backend + Emulators + VM: M1 Pro 16 inch(32GB,10CPU,16,GPU) Others: Choose custom config with M1 Max. Note: Although you can do Frontend + Backend + Emulators on both Mid & Mid senior devices, the Mid will heat more and won't keep up the same speed as compared to the Mid Senior
Hi, I hope you can help out. I am just starting coding but will keep my purchase for the next 3-5yrs. I’ll be starting off with learning C++ but will also use virtualisation software. Would the base model 14” do the job and would it be an overkill to upgrade to ram to 32gb and 1tb SSD? I was going to purchase the 14” with 10core cpu 16core gpu 1tb SSD and 32GB ram but I’m concerned that the fans will kick in faster then the base model and that I might find it annoying? What are your thoughts and will I regret not purchasing the base 16” model for coding/programming? I just prefer the overall aesthetics and weight difference of the 14” would appreciate your feedback. Cheers
So many choices! Nobody makes it easier to decide than you guys, amazing videos, thank you! I bought the M1 MBA last year and love it, and thanks to your videos and my use case, I know I don't have to spend the extra bucks to upgrade right now. Thank you.
@@keebsmechanical6822 I have never done anything intensive for that long, normal use for 6 hours, no, but I guess if you were exporting videos for that long it would get hot.
I bought the 13" M1 Pro for 2 reasons: I like the non-tapered design, and I have anxiety about overheating. I know that in the real world, it will almost never make a difference... but it's nice knowing there's a fan, just in case. In reality, it's just another crevice for me to have to clean out lol. But I love my lil Pro!
Like Max says, avoid the 13" M1 Pro. I never knew why anyone was buying the 13" M1 Pro, and I still think people should avoid those. Get either the M1 Air or the base 14" Pro. If you find yourself upgrading from the base 14" Pro, start thinking about whether the 16" jump is reasonable. If you want a 32-core M1 Max, get the 16".
Technically, it was the Mac with the best battery life, now it's would be the 16in MacBook Pro. Some people don't want the wedge shape, but it would be the extra battery life and the touch bar. I guess next year, will have to what and see what Apple does with the 13' M1 MacBook Pro, or "MacBook" If they sold a MacBook with some of the features of the more expensive MacBook Pros, like extra ports, mini led at 60hz and cost less than a $2000 dollars, I think it would be attractive also, the new architecture with the new instruction set of ARM V9, we should get more efficient and powerful chips in roughly the same size that they were. Even better battery life. If they made the best value MacBook, with more storage and better battery life, I think it would fix it's value because if you were to spec out a 13' M1 MacBook Pro to a 14' M1 Pro MacBook Pro, it would only be a $100 difference. 1899 > 1999.
I want the 2021 MacBook Pro 13”. I like the Touch Bar. I like the shape. I really hate the new MacBook shapes it looks bulky and not sleek like the others and I just don’t like it at all. So what’s wrong with 13”?
@@kristinafourer9656 There's nothing wrong with the 13" Pro, but the Air is quite a bit cheaper for basically the same features and performance. The Pro would be a good computer in a world where other Macs didn't exist, but they do. You're free to buy whatever you like, no matter what other people think of them, especially if you have specific desires. For instance, I just bought an Intel MacBook Pro 13" (4-port) because Best Buy had them for $1099, and I wanted an affordable Intel Mac to complement my M1 Mac, and that's a computer that everybody says is a bad idea to buy right now (which is why it's discounted by $700).
@@mbvglider so you would go for MacBook Air 2021 instead of MacBook Pro 2021 due to price or for some other reason? I’m just trying to understand your reasoning. I had my MacBook Air 2013 till this year and it still works fine, just the battery life is shit so I’m upgrading finally. But the MacBook Air “served” me for 8 years with no complaints.
The touchbar itself is attracted me on buying the 13"macbook pro. Ive always wanted a touchscreen functions on any apple macs. Ipad pro wouldve been amazing if it just werent about the operating system
To be honest tho I don't know why everyone hates the Touch Bar. the only reason I got the 13" MacBook Pro instead of the Air was because of the Touch Bar. I love the Touch Bar, its very useful and a time saver for me. also my MacBook Pro lasts a whole day without a charge for me so thats also a plus.
I never found it very useful, it became a glorified way for me to change volume and brightness. Most of the software I use just didn't have a lot of useful features on the touch bar
@@EvilTim1911 yea i get what you mean we’ll with the software side of things but i don’t have any problems with the volume or brightness. i think it’s faster too with the sliding your finisher across instead of pressing a key so many times. but i hate how that word correct thing don’t work on google docs and that
I bought the Air 8/512 (for about 1100 euros, which is about 1200 US dollars, tax included, which is a great price in Italy) for the product design university, adn it's incredible, it uses less than 30% of its battery while I use Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and Premiere Pro at the same time, for 4-5 hours (not incredibly heavy projects, but still awesome)
How does those 8gb of ram working? Will I be able to retouch photo in lightroom or Photoshop in meantime have opened chrome with like 20tabs and yt playing in background?
Excellent information, thank you! I've now ordered, cancelled, ordered, returned, and ordered again over the past 1.5 months as new info on the specs has come in, and I've changed my mind on what I need. Very helpful to understand in detail the real-world differences in battery life, CPU, GPU, and RAM. Why doesn't Apple make this information available to potential customers?
Wow dude, maybe you should have just waited a couple of months before buying anything. It was pretty clear that there were going to be a ton of reviews and vids from many many reviewers.
Even if the MacBook Air was on sale for $899 and the MacBook Pro on sale for $1199, I would still buy the MacBook Pro. The main reason is because the fan. I have the MacBook Pro constantly connected to an external monitor to comfortably watch a training video while typing notes on the laptop screen. Even with the fan, the whole MacBook Pro body got a little too warm. I can’t imagine how hot the MacBook Air would feel by doing this same set up. I plan on holding onto this MacBook Pro for 7+ years and I believe with the cooling fan, the M1 chip should not degrade in performance vs the MacBook Air fanless design.
I bought a 14-core 14" just for the better display and speakers, design as well. I could get by with an M1 performance but I wanted these extras, plus I watch lots of content on my Mac
Same. I had the M1 Air and it was amazing. The only limitations I ran into was 8GB of RAM and the LCD display. MagSafe, the miniLED display, extra ports, and extra performance headroom make the 14" worth it for me.
@kenny Yi, Depends if it's a replacement (starting at $999) or like the MacBook Pro, released at a higher MSRP with the older model kept. My guess is that the new MacBook Air will replace the 13 inch MacBook Pro as the $1299 MacBook.
@@Photo0021 I agree, honestly depending on price to performance cause I’m pretty with a student discount you can get the air for like 899 which is a hell of a deal. Micro center had them for 720 I just don’t have the money at the time
I'd go with the base model as always since all I'd be doing is Record my gameplay , edit it and join my online meetings.Completely Satisfied with the base model + Samsung T7 / T5 external SSD.
Chose the 13" MBP, as I was mover to MacOS and I wanted a great performing device which gets all the basics great and something that will be long lasting. Personally handling these, I 'felt' that the MBP is a little more solid (can be just becoz of the lil extra weight and the non wedge design), my idea that even though the passive cooling will be enuf for MBA, but I did not wanna take any risk for the long term so fan was like a safety feature and I want more battery life coz it definitely has more juice in it and the brighter display is grt too. Moreover the region where I bought it, the 512 GB config had hardly a 120 USD difference so MBP was a better deal. In cases where the price diff is slim, the litte extra and assurance in MBP really shines
i’m stuck between the 13 inch and 14 inch M1 Pro. it seems like the 14 inch has better qualities but it’s a bit too expensive for me. im also considering getting the M1 Air as well just because of how low the price is compared to the others. if anyone has any suggestions please let me know, i don’t have much knowledge on this stuff and am on a budget 🥲 i plan on using the laptop for college and other misc things
I’ve had an m1 air since launch and it has 85% of the performance I need (video editor) and considering how cheap and light it is, I don’t see a point upgrading.
I just purchased the 16” max with 32gb ram and a 1tb SSD. I do a lot of multi layer graphics with Illustrator, Photoshop some video and some 3D CAD. I am super impressed with this machine over the previous 2019 intel based 16” MacBook Pro.
Been using the MBA M1 8GB for a couple of months now and I regret not getting the 16GB. My memory is constantly in the yellow with 10-15 tabs open in Brave that includes Spotify playing, a couple of tabs in Firefox for work, and a couple of tabs in Safari. It'll get into the red once I start importing photos into Lightroom so I have to closeout the Spotify tab and usually Firefox as well. Looked into trading it in and get the 16GB version because I don't like the aesthetic direction Apple is going with for the new MBAs but man, that's a pricey mistake. It comes out to about $800 for 8 more GB of RAM...
Didn't expect much going into this video but what a great, easy to follow comparison between all these models. I have decided on the M1Pro 14". Thanks for the concise, down to earth review!
You forgot to say about touchbar in 13" MBP: it maybe helpful for some users (or not 😂). I was really happy after moving from intel MBP with touchbar to M1 MBA.
This helps. The first MacBook I bought for school was the mid-2015 pro model and it was just too large. I liked the screen, but it was too heavy. I have a new iMac green and really want a laptop to work on school work at work or in the library. So I think the air will work just fine for my psychology degree.
I made a decision to get the 2020 M1 MBP 13" model last month and i've no regrets. I do enough video editing to know my workflow will benefit from the fan, but my pocket just isnt deep enough for the 2021 MBPs. so far i'm very happy with the upgrade from my 2011 MBP (which still works!)
Hi..I plan to do some photo editing and some video editing casually. I’m not a Pro. Will the MB Air M1 or MB Pro M1 13’ be good for me. I really need one.
@@pencilpainters hello, i think if its not for professional work, most reviews will say that the Air is perfectly usable, and I would agree. I edit videos for a living, so any extra power i can squeeze out with the help of a fan is very useful. But casually the Air should be great.
Driving 3 external displays from my MacBook air M1 using 2 DisplayLink adapters and the built-in HDMI out via Thunderbolt adapter. Total displays is 4 if I include the integrated laptop screen.
I will stick to my 13 inch MacBook Pro since it is the only one with a Touch Bar. It is faster than anything I have used before for my daily apps, illustrator, photoshop and ArtPro. If apple keeps the Touch Bar on M2, I may consider upgrading.
I just bought a 16” MacBook Pro - M1 Pro that you recommended! I’m a web/graphic designer and planning to get a Google UX Certification and more certs to sharpen my skills, so I thought that would suit me the best. Thanks for providing us tons of stress tests, graphic performance tests and comparisons of the battery life for each model. I so appreciate you guys! It was truly a difficult decision, but I feel peace to made a good decision for my lifestyle now. Thanks, guys!
Planning on getting the air because I’m mainly going to be using it for typing purposes since most of my classes I have to type so much things 😅. Thank you so so much for helping me choose which I should go for
Thanks for this video... my 2015 MBA is in need of replacement, and I was wavering on which model to get. It's clear that since the M2 MBA isn't coming for a while, the 14" base MBP is the way to go. Cheers!
I decided buying this year Macbook air M1 from this year only for normal everyday uses and I have never been more satisfied with it's performance because before I had 3 windows laptops and all of them crashed down after two years and repair would be more expensive then original price of laptop. Yeah so what you pay for is quality.
Nice summary. I find running both Photoshop and the cloudy Lightroom CC at the same time can drive memory pressure into the red, so that’s another argument for 16GB. I have yellow memory pressure anxiety anyway, so treated myself to a base 14. Having owned one for a year, I do think the base Air is possibly one of the best value portable computing devices (ever). In spite of the new toy, I intend to keep and carry on using the Air.
I'm the IT Manager at a company that is primarily Mac and I've used the 13, 16, and 14in. The 14in is great for everything. We're going to be giving them to some developers because they prefer the portability since they use external monitors anyway. Also, the Air doesnt support multiple external monitors natively.
Struggled with the decision between the MacBook Air M1 and the MacBook 14" as student with a minor in computer science, so doing some coding and graphic design and considering my MacBook an essential tool. So I am on the edge of considering myself a "Pro" user and I used to have a MacBook Pro 13" 2015. I finally ended up getting the MacBook Air M1 a couple of days ago with 16 GB RAM and I am amazed so far. It is incredible fast, lightweight, great battery, completely silent, fantastic keyboard and an amazing value of money. No regrets. I really think the MacBook Air will suit the majority of users and even a lot of students and pros that do not need the extra power or XDR display.
@@sizu1320 This solely depends on your use case and your amount of files. It does not really have an impact on "processing performance" as long as there is a little bit of space left on the SSD as cache. If you are having a lot of pictures, music, videos go for more.
I just bought my first MacBook, the M1 Air. The only reason I went with 16GB Ram is because I plan on doing quite a bit of coding and app development on Xcode and Android Studio.
I ordered 14" Base Model. Estimated delivery before 17th December. So excited, this is going to be my first Apple product. I would appreciate if anyone gives me some starting tips + some beginners tutorial.
i personally don't understand why laptops are putting so much effort into speakers. I use headphones with my laptop and think i have only twice used the speakers. It's a laptop, most of the time it is used in an office or open environment. I would much rather see a few more ports, lighter and a price reduction, buy a cracking set of headphones and enjoy the sound without disturbing everyone. I think headphones sound better anyway on a laptop over the tiny speakers.
The only serious choices are the Mac Air and Pro 14" but the price point being double puts a new buyer in a tough spot. Although the Air is everyone's favourite but still you seriously get tempted by the better screen, sound and the overall aesthetics on the MacBook Pro (14"). I have bought the pro today only and the reason is that the air model seemed less impressive and most likely will get outdated faster than the pro since M2 air is coming out soon. Since I am planning to use it for a longer period of time, I hope it passes the test of time better than Mac Air.
I just ordered a 16 inch M1 Max 10 CPU 32 GPU 64 GB UF and 8TB SSD for my 10 year old. He is a programmer and gamer. He’s been editing videos for Nike quite sometime now. Editing 8k files
Thanks for all these test and reviews ! For me I think I've to choose the 14" M1 pro mostly because of the native connectivity and the Mag Safe charger... I don't think that the 16" M1 has his place... That's exactly the same machine that the M1 air...
I was on MBA 16GB / 1TB but had to return it due to my needs for dual monitor. I can only say that DisplayLink sucks so bad and running office apps made my MBA running like hot cakes making it so uncomfortable to use. Teams, OneDrive, etc caused so much heat during their active use. Despite everyone praising MBA, and yes I agree it fits more people but for you who are running dual monitor and office apps for meetings etc I feel like MBP14 will be a better choice overall, assuming you have the money of course. As Terren pointed out, when comparing the same configuration, the price difference is not that huge and if you use your laptop for more than 5 years, choosing a more powerful computer with a fan will pay a dividend later on.
i'm considering a macbook air with 16gb of ram once i work with graphic design...however there's a considerable price difference between a 8 and 16gb. I admit i'm a little confused about what to do now
One thing I hate about Amazon is that even though they have the upgraded storage version of the M1 Macs, they don't have the upgraded RAM variants. Its only 256/8 or 512/8 variants
Was planning on getting the 16 inch, but holy f that thing is heavy. Anyone saying otherwise is talking bs. You are not going to have a fun time with that if you travel or move your laptop a lot. Went with the 14 inch which is also heavy but far more portable, and I am very happy with it.
This was a great overall review of the new MacBooks. The only question I have is on RAM. Yes, 16 seems to do very well, but obviously asks more from the internal drive. What is this doing over time if you are like me and keep your machine for 10 years? I currently have a base MBA and use PS and InDesign, and some others. And it almost immediately shows the memory in orange vs green. It will also go in the red. I’m sure 16 would have been better, but wouldn’t 32 help even more? This is keeping me on the fence. Help me get off the fence please. Lol.
@@rodrigomedellin6879 Well now that I got the 8, I regret it for what I do with photoshop and InDesign. I haven’t even touched video yet. Mine still functions fine so far, but the memory pressure is entering the red zone. That can’t be good. 16 should be bare minimum. If I sell this, I’m going 32 on a 14 inch with 1TB. The 256 fills up fast just with programs.
As an amateur videographer the Air is probably sufficient for my performance needs. But Apples upgrades are so pricey that by the time I upgrade to the 16GB I need for a multi-tasking desktop replacement and working storage to 2TB, it no longer makes sense to NOT jump all the way to the 16" model. (Portability isn't a priority for me.)
I just compared the 16" MBP sizes with my late 2013 15" MBP, and they are exactly same size W:35,57 cm x 24,81 cm, just the 2021 16" screen one doesn't have bezels and is slightly heavier, so for those who jump from an old school MBP like me, I don't think the size will be a huge difference
My mid-2012 15-inch MBP is WAY PAST needing an upgrade and is actually a bit heavier than the M1 MBP 16-inch base model. So I’m saving up for that with 1TB of extra storage.
I will buy a MacBook Air 2022 if it has these specs: Color: silver: Magic Keyboard: black; Size: 15 inches; Memory: 32GB; Storage: 1TB; Ports: 3 x Thunderbolt / USB 4, headphone jack, MagSafe; Weight: lightweight. And not a notch but a circular recess like probably the iPhone 14 gets it.
Thanks for the great videos! I must say I am just glad that there are so many options without the big compromises that came with the Intel MacBooks. I choose to get the MBA M1 with 512gb and 16gb. Still a sweet machine if you’re on a budget!
Loved the new MacBook BUT my M1 Pro Max has developed a speaker distortion issue after only a month (confirmed by Genius Bar). Bought it online and they’re refusing to refund or replace. Say it must be sent for repair because it’s 5 days beyond their 30 day refund period. Very poor from Apple IMHO, especially given it’s a brand new high end line. They also can’t tell me when it will be returned to me. I use the machine for work so will struggle. BEWARE when buying online rather than in store.
I want to get back into macbooks since my 2007 model broke about 6 years ago. would ideally want a 14 inch for portability. I will be using serato for my older numark v7 controllers for dj sets. Going to use ableton live with midi pads/controllers and also recording live instruments for samples. Video editing was also something that i was doing a ton and now more than ever want to get back to that. Plug-ins will definitely also be used and i remember having many of them open at once and drastically slowing down back then, so im sure i will be ecstatic that i will not see that now. Just thinking of going for the standard 14 inch maybe, if my 07 mac was able to do all these things albeit sometimes slow because i had tons of windows open (especially plug-ins) im pretty sure these macbooks will be able to take care of what i need for now. 2000 is expensive but thats basically what i bought my 07 macbook pro at so its not really that bad especially since I need the upgrade.
Im pretty sure I got a dud in 2019, as student I always new the Airs were recommended. I was gifted the Pro, and it overheated constantly with video playing, multiple open tabs, etc. so idk
Still deciding between Pro vs Max. I like longer battery life and cooler temperatures of Pro but I don't want to miss out on better performance of Max. Curious how much hotter is Max during real world usage?
I think if you need the Max you already know it. What it really gives is twice as many encoders/decoders and way more GPU power at the cost of battery life, even when you're not pushing it
Perhaps the only drawback to the 16 inch Pro Max is the battery life as compared to the Pro, but would it be reasonable to test a MAX in "low power battery mode?" How will its capablities diminish? Will the battery hold out longer? Does it "act" like a 16 inch Pro in performance? Or just no contest. Thanks guys, you're great!
I actually have the entry model MBA and I regret not having spent more RAM because this is clearly not enough. I'm not a full-time editor but the RAM is always saturated, slowing the computer slow down when rendering vídeos.
You know, I'm thinking to save up for a new computer next year (a MacBook to be specific), and after watching this video, I am going to settle for one of three options: the MacBook air (possibly the m2 chip), the base 14in MacBook Pro or the base 16in MacBook Pro. In respect to the 16in MBP, no I don't need that much power honestly - I'm just a college guy who really doesn't do any intensive graphic stuff or anything like that outside of occasional gaming, but I think it would be really nice to have such a large display and such incredible sound! :)
If I’m being honest, I would want the 16 inch M1 max because of the size and speed, but I still want the intel 16 inch because the software I use 1. Can only export to windows if you’re on windows 2. I can actually test software on another OS 3. So many games on other softwares still only work on x86 even with rosetta So basically I just want a computer that can do and run everything flawlessly
Very few people in the world need 14/16 inches power...macbook air is enough for 95% people out there..which you can upgrade to 16gb ram / larger memory which will still be atleast 500 dollars cheaper than the base variant of those bigger ones...as steve jobs himself said," people don't know they want something until we show it to them"!!
I miss the 12-inch Macbook. It is light, thin, powerful enough for my everyday needs. That's my first Macbook (2015), used it til the day the battery won't charge anymore (July 2021). I now use a Macbook Pro, I honestly think I should've gone with the Macbook Air.
Since the release of the 14" and 16" models the used market for base M1 Air and Pro models has been fairly compelling - I managed to pick up a used base model 13" M1 Pro for ~£850 at a secondhand chain retailer in very good condition. Not much more than the Air they were also selling, and I valued the brighter screen & additional battery life.
I just wanna say one thing, there's a fluxgate issue in 2017 MacBook. Just keep that in mind. Obviously it woudn't happen to everyone but just something to keep in mind.
Upgrading from 2013 MacBook Pro. But I’m actually going with an M1 MacBook Air with 16gb and 1tb hard drive…future proof and will figure out if I need more power!
Nah, just get a cheap base M1 MBA. You are spending way too much on an entry-level computer otherwise. The best way to "future proof" is to buy what you need _right now_ and to buy something else in the future. The future device will be better than _anything_ you can get now.
I can’t decide between macbook pro 13 inch with touchbar and macbook pro 14 inch. I love the idea of touchbar but the macbook pro 14 inch is better specs wise…
You see, these are the types of videos I like to watch. THANK YOU!!!! This video was excellent!!!! Gracias! Like, i give it a 5 star! Thank you for answering all my questions without me even asking them 👏🏽 I was eyeing the MacBook Air with 16 of RAM But i rather have more internal memory vs RAM. 8RAM is perfect for what I use my laptop for. Again, you helped me make up my mind! Good day
The M1 MacBook Air is Apple’s best choice, best value and best laptop for 95% of users. The other 5% are for the Pro’s.
This.
Yep. I know a lot of us like to get "Pro" stuff just to flex, but if we really consider the type of stuff we're using it for, the Air is such a good value. Having to wait a few more minutes for a render isn't going to make or break us.

Is it it good for photo and short video editing ?. I’m not a Pro would be most casually.
For me the 13 inch M1 MacBook Pro with 16 GB and 1 TB drive is the sweet spot for what I do. And it has the best battery life of all the M1 MacBooks. But for 98% of the people the MacBook Air is more than enough.
Why doesn't anyone ever bring up that Costco has the Macbook Air for $799 ( Through Dec 24th)and they add a second year of warranty for free?
do you know what the specs at Costco are for the RAM and Storage? If a 16gb Ram and 512 SSD option is available, I'll definitely get it over the 14in m1 pro. Also, is this for the US or in Canada?
Thank you for the guidelines Max. Never ever I would have thought that buying Macs will be this complex despite the fact that Apple designs their own processors.
I am a Software Engineer,so these assumptions are based on that:
Starters(Frontend only): M1 Air(8GB)
Mid(Frontend + Backend +Emulators): M1 Air(16GB)
Mid Senior(Frontend + Backend + Emulators): M1 Pro 14 inch(16GB,8CPU,14GPU)
Senior(Frontend + Backend + Emulators + VM: M1 Pro 16 inch(32GB,10CPU,16,GPU)
Others: Choose custom config with M1 Max.
Note: Although you can do Frontend + Backend + Emulators on both Mid & Mid senior devices, the Mid will heat more and won't keep up the same speed as compared to the Mid Senior

@@pencilpainters Honestly,i have no idea about photo/video editing. But,as you mentioned you are not a pro, then base MB Air would be good to go.
I’m might try to do Python later in future. Is it ok with MBA M1 ?
I plan to keep it long term …as my last to buy.
@@pencilpainters Absolutely fine.Just for general purpose programing, the base variant of MB Air will be good to go for the next 2-3 years
Hi, I hope you can help out.
Thank you.
May I ask how much RAM did you go for?
@@samiam5326 I got the 8GB, which has been totally fine. I did upgrade to the 8GPU version though, probably not necessary.

does your macbook air not hot if you used it more than 6 hours in a day?
@@keebsmechanical6822 I have never done anything intensive for that long, normal use for 6 hours, no, but I guess if you were exporting videos for that long it would get hot.
I bought the 13" M1 Pro for 2 reasons: I like the non-tapered design, and I have anxiety about overheating. I know that in the real world, it will almost never make a difference... but it's nice knowing there's a fan, just in case.
In reality, it's just another crevice for me to have to clean out lol. But I love my lil Pro!
With the Touch Bar ?
Yeah same. I thought the same before buying it.
Yes! I literally felt the same and ordered the Pro instead of the Air. However it is taking a lot of time to deliver due to lockdowns in China.
Well, some people love the touchbar and wanted the extra battery life.
Technically, it was the Mac with the best battery life, now it's would be the 16in MacBook Pro.
Some people don't want the wedge shape, but it would be the extra battery life and the touch bar.
I guess next year, will have to what and see what Apple does with the 13' M1 MacBook Pro, or "MacBook"
If they sold a MacBook with some of the features of the more expensive MacBook Pros, like extra ports, mini led at 60hz and cost less than a $2000 dollars, I think it would be attractive also, the new architecture with the new instruction set of ARM V9, we should get more efficient and powerful chips in roughly the same size that they were.

Just bought the new M1 MacBook Pro, 16 inch, and oh my GOSH. Literally the best laptop I’ve ever owned. I upgraded from a 2019 MacBook Pro 13 inch.
What do you need afterall? I got curious about it 😂
Even if the MacBook Air was on sale for $899 and the MacBook Pro on sale for $1199, I would still buy the MacBook Pro.
@@leoscalzo76 retina?!! Isn’t it

This is true. The M1Pro 14 speakers are much better than in M1 Air. First computer speakers actually that I want to use. No need for headphones.
I'm going for a MacBook once I finish high school next year, so I can have something dependable for college.
I definitely want the next gen Air.
Same, do you think it would be more worth it than going for the 2020 air?
@kenny Yi, Depends if it's a replacement (starting at $999) or like the MacBook Pro, released at a higher MSRP with the older model kept.
My guess is that the new MacBook Air will replace the 13 inch MacBook Pro as the $1299 MacBook.
@@Photo0021 I agree, honestly depending on price to performance cause I’m pretty with a student discount you can get the air for like 899 which is a hell of a deal. Micro center had them for 720 I just don’t have the money at the time

I’ll wait for M9
I'm waiting for m5 so I can get the M1
I’m waiting for M16.
I’m waiting M&M’s
I’m gonna wait for the M4 to match my bmw
Fan might be worse long term because that adds another moving part that could fail
i’m stuck between the 13 inch and 14 inch M1 Pro. it seems like the 14 inch has better qualities but it’s a bit too expensive for me. im also considering getting the M1 Air as well just because of how low the price is compared to the others. if anyone has any suggestions please let me know, i don’t have much knowledge on this stuff and am on a budget 🥲 i plan on using the laptop for college and other misc things
If you’re using your laptop for college. In my opinion i think m1 air should be more than enough
You can get a Mac air and a monitor, so you have lots of portability and at home you can dock it and work on a big screen
I’ve had an m1 air since launch and it has 85% of the performance I need (video editor) and considering how cheap and light it is, I don’t see a point upgrading.
If you’re not a professional you do not need the pro. The M1 technology is good as it is
Exactly. The M1 MBA can still do nearly any task, albeit some a little slower. Incredible bang-for-the-buck.
Are you using the base model with 8GB?
Ram into the same issue. Ended up buying an M1 MBP 13” 1TB with 16 GB ram for $1,000 secondhand. Luckily I didn’t have to pay TOO much to switch.
Dude. It’s $799 for a MBA at Costco. Just gotta find one in stock!
Didn't expect much going into this video but what a great, easy to follow comparison between all these models. I have decided on the M1Pro 14". Thanks for the concise, down to earth review!
I got the MacBook Pro 13inch because i like the Touch Bar and you get a brighter display
You forgot to say about touchbar in 13" MBP: it maybe helpful for some users (or not 😂). I was really happy after moving from intel MBP with touchbar to M1 MBA.
I have a MBP 13' with Touch Bar and I love it. I have no idea why everyone hates it.
I’m about to do the same upgrade from my 2011 MBP which still does technically work 😂
Driving 3 external displays from my MacBook air M1 using 2 DisplayLink adapters and the built-in HDMI out via Thunderbolt adapter.
The Touch Bar is gone in the newer generation Apple silicon, gone for good.

Cheers!
I want to buy a new MacBook air should I go with a MacBook Air with an M1 chip or should I wait for the upcoming M2 in 2022?
Macbook Air with better camera and narrower bezels to make it 14" would be heaven.

I just went from a 2016 MacBook Pro to the M1 Air. Massive upgrade and such a better typing experience.
I'm the IT Manager at a company that is primarily Mac and I've used the 13, 16, and 14in. The 14in is great for everything. We're going to be giving them to some developers because they prefer the portability since they use external monitors anyway. Also, the Air doesnt support multiple external monitors natively.
Do you advice I should choose 2017 mackbook pro 13.3 in ? As a developer, let me know
Struggled with the decision between the MacBook Air M1 and the MacBook 14" as student with a minor in computer science, so doing some coding and graphic design and considering my MacBook an essential tool.
Is 256 ssd enough for it?
@@sizu1320 This solely depends on your use case and your amount of files. It does not really have an impact on "processing performance" as long as there is a little bit of space left on the SSD as cache. If you are having a lot of pictures, music, videos go for more.

@@aybaws sorry I mean 17th December
i personally don't understand why laptops are putting so much effort into speakers.

Lol.
I'm having trouble too on deciding between 16 or 32 GB of RAM because of the long term endurance of the MBP :(
@@rodrigomedellin6879 Well now that I got the 8, I regret it for what I do with photoshop and InDesign. I haven’t even touched video yet. Mine still functions fine so far, but the memory pressure is entering the red zone. That can’t be good. 16 should be bare minimum. If I sell this, I’m going 32 on a 14 inch with 1TB. The 256 fills up fast just with programs.
I bought a M1 MBA when it was released, and by far still don't regret at all :)
I have the M1 Air, 16gb and 2 TB SSD, for me the selling point is no fans and huge battery life. I can't ever go back to having fans on a laptop.
256 gb of storage is unacceptable in 2021 nearly 2022 !
I will buy a MacBook Air 2022 if it has these specs:
Color: silver:
Magic Keyboard: black;
Size: 15 inches;
Memory: 32GB;
Storage: 1TB;
Ports: 3 x Thunderbolt / USB 4, headphone jack, MagSafe;
Weight: lightweight.
And not a notch but a circular recess
like probably the iPhone 14 gets it.
Watched on my tv that wasn’t logged in and opened YT on my phone just to say thanks for helping me decide, great comparison
Can you please make longer sound samples. Some of us are enjoying them sooo much❤️.
My base model M1 MBA feels significantly faster than my gaming PC with 32 GB ram
Thats why i sold my hp pavilion gaming and im waiting for the new air…. i hope it release in march 🥺🥺
I think in 2022 onward. Apple product will be very distinct at each other. If your not pro, you dont need to get the pro. Get what you need
Watch the other videos here on max tech.Max covers these extensively over many other videos
For most people, the next MacBook Air with the M2 SoC. The MacBook Pro is overkill for many users.
When will the MacBook air with m2 chip come out?
@@jennieredrose5819 next year
I actually have the entry model MBA and I regret not having spent more RAM because this is clearly not enough. I'm not a full-time editor but the RAM is always saturated, slowing the computer slow down when rendering vídeos.
This is helpful, thanks!
Yeah, it is hard to decide. Thank you for your video so I have clearer view which one to buy.

@@johnnydeck9101 so what, get over it 😂
If I’m being honest, I would want the 16 inch M1 max because of the size and speed, but I still want the intel 16 inch because the software I use
1. Can only export to windows if you’re on windows
2. I can actually test software on another OS
3. So many games on other softwares still only work on x86 even with rosetta
So basically I just want a computer that can do and run everything flawlessly
Very informative video. I personally have the 14” with upgraded processor and I’m very satisfied.
Which retailer did you buy it from?
Phenomenal video!! Thank you so much for the detailed information. I'm purchasing the Macbook Air! Now to decide on the color....lol!
It all really depends on what you'll be doing and what software you'll be using. And your budget. Then go from there.
You provide humongous value. Thank you!
Thank you for the Tech Insight. These days buying a MacBook is like purchasing a vehicle with added features etc.
Good day
I had to choose among those options and you made it so clear, I had no doubt after watching. Thank you so much!
I’m waiting for the M2 Air
Thanks for helping us to decide which one to buy. You real life experience is the best rather than looking at those crazy specs. 👍
