FUN FACT! We still use Amalgam fillings in Canada, there is some pressure to change to the composite because of the mercury content. However Health Canada and the Canadian Dental Association have found that they're a safe and effective form of dental medicine (there is no evidence of health effects caused by amalgam fillings at this time) so there's been no good reason to mandate a change. at least from a patient health perspective.
In Sweden they are not allowed but they don't remove old ones unless they fall out or have some other problem. I had them in my milk tooth but my mom insisted on plastic once I got my permanent teeth.
In Ireland there’s still an option for amalgam as they last longer. Know some people who say the same filling has lasted around 30+ years, the composite looks nicer though and vanity wins everytime 😂
I got one of the really early composite fillings on my front teeth (I was a very dumb child, what can I say) and I didn't notice it shrunk a tiny bit and lo behold, about decade later, my front teeth started hurting real bad right after I moved out of my hometown, so I found a new dentist in the city and she was like "yeah your roots are almost completely destroyed, the teeth are completely rotten from a crack behind the fillings, how the hell did your old dentist not check for this." Had crowns ever since, thankfully there was still enough tooth root structure to attach the lil metal fangs to and then put a crown on that.
I had a filling crack, just like you said, and food and drink would get into it all the time. I had no idea the zinger pain I was having from my tequila drinks or dill pickel snacking was the telling of a crack in my filling. The bad news is that I let it go on for years! Long story short, I found a dentist who saved my smile. He did an xray, decided he wanted an endodontist to check it out before he did anything more. Turns out, my roots were rotting away!! They saved the tooth and for about a year now it's no longer on my dentis' watch list when I come in.
all of my molars have metal fillings bc I ate a bunch of candy as a kid. my dentist looked at them and told me she wasn't going to touch any of the fillings unless they cracked or fell out. thankfully!
Mercury is a chemical element; it has symbol Hg and atomic number 80. It is also known as quicksilver and was formerly named hydrargyrum (/haɪˈdrɑːrdʒərəm/ hy-DRAR-jər-əm) from the Greek words hydor (water) and argyros (silver).[8] A heavy, silvery d-block element, mercury is the only metallic element that is known to be liquid at standard temperature and pressure; the only other element that is liquid under these conditions is the halogen bromine, though metals such as caesium, gallium, and rubidium melt just above room temperature. Mercury occurs in deposits throughout the world mostly as cinnabar (mercuric sulfide). The red pigment vermilion is obtained by grinding natural cinnabar or synthetic mercuric sulfide. Exposure to mercury and mercury-containing organic compounds is toxic to the nervous system, immune system and kidneys of humans and other animals; mercury poisoning can result from exposure to water-soluble forms of mercury (such as mercuric chloride or methylmercury) either directly or through mechanisms of biomagnification. Mercury is used in thermometers, barometers, manometers, sphygmomanometers, float valves, mercury switches, mercury relays, fluorescent lamps and other devices, although concerns about the element's toxicity have led to the phasing out of such mercury-containing instruments.[9] It remains in use in scientific research applications and in amalgam for dental restoration in some locales. It is also used in fluorescent lighting. Electricity passed through mercury vapor in a fluorescent lamp produces short-wave ultraviolet light, which then causes the phosphor in the tube to fluoresce, making visible light.
@@ashleycooper3879 I have a cavity that the composite filling has fallen out. I purposely chose the highest insurance my job offers bc of my front teeth (long story). The dentist wants so much money from me. I haven’t been there in 2024 yet.
Downside of amalgam though is that a) it is not glued to the tooth, therefore offers no stability, so over time the tooth can get cracks because there is no sideways support from amalgam. While composite is glued, which means it provides structural support in all directions and b) for amalgam to work, the dentist has to remove a LOT OF healthy dental mass to create a structure that when filled with amalgam, the filling does not fall out. While with composite fillings, only the damaged part is removed. That, and the problem with mercury, is enough for me to stick to composite. Even if they fall out sometimes. Whats the deal, just get another filling. Kinda a one sided story by bentist, very biased. As if amalgam has no issues...
Can you do a video about sealants? i just got these and the taste is weird (and i have 5 of them) and i don't think i can eat right away, and how long are they supposed to last?
I used to have one and mine eventually fell out but not before one of the compost ones did. Also is it kinda weird that I kept it, just bc they don't do them much anymore so it's kinda like a lil personal history of my life keepsake in my hopechest.
Hey Bentist i have a serious question I have a question, serious inquiry. If the tooth beside your incisor, closer to the side of the cheek is pulled can you use braces to close that space?
I remember when I was younger, I was eating one of those caramel apple lollipops and it ripped a filling out 🥲 Just threw it away and didn't mention it to my parents 😂 I still have one of those. In high school I once had a friend tell me I had something in my back teeth, while I was talking. I asked her if it was silver/grey and she said yes, so I told her it was just a filling. She really wouldn't believe me that it was a filling 😂 Like, I promise, I am aware of the one and only silver filling I have in my mouth.
Idk what you are talking about about bentist. Maybe you don't use them, but Ive been to three here in Texas, all of which offer amalgam fillings, hell google amalgam fillings and you will see they are still the most commonly used today, composite sucks tbh, I've had an amalgam fillings for over 15 years, my composite filling has come out three times in the same year
My dentist still uses amalgam. I think he does amalgam for bigger cavities and composite for the smaller ones because I had a tiny cavity a long while ago and it’s not amalgam.
so my previous dentists are actually the reason i need a dentist now? great... i have a few metal fillings. they dont bother me so much except occasionally feeling like ive bitten onto tin foil. its all the composite ones ive ever gotten that have broken within 2 years of getting them and my dental issues are now so much worse than ever before. It's frustrating to the point i dont even trust seeing another dentist now because what more damage are they going to cause? brushing is extremely painful in certain areas. 10/10 worst dental pain ive ever felt trying to brush and hitting the soft interior of a cracked tooth. eating is an aweful experience even if the food tastes really good. and even if i could find a trustworthy dentist now, i dont have any medical coverage whatsoever and barely afford to pay rent so im certainly not doing it out of pocket. How did my teeth get so bad to begin with, you might ask? I grind my teeth in my sleep. literally have no control over that. i brushed and flossed daily. didnt matter. then all 4 of my wisdom teeth grew in pointing forward, pressuring all of my teeth so tightly together flossing became impossible. with no insurance i wasnt able to get the wisdom teeth removed until they had already started cracking other teeth. i had absolutely no control over any of this and now i can't enjoy my favorite meal because it hurts to eat. My favorite food is chicken alfredo. not many food require as little chewing as pasta. btw, im only in my 20s. so i've got a lifetime of barely being able to nibble on my food now unless by some miracle jobs in this country stop screwing ppl out of healthcare with "part time so we dont have to give you benefits but you'll still make just 50cents too much to get your states benefits" kind of nonsense. I do not care what any proud American patriot has to say about it, I literally hate living in this country and it's insanely frustrating that i cant afford to leave. I really really wish that i could. I would sell any of my organs im capable of living without in order to leave.
Question: I have modified a shower handle to spray high pressure water to "floss" my teeth. I bought those teeth water zappers that do squat. This one cleans. Then I eat a gum with xylitol to lay over the washed surface.
I probably still have a couple. Recently got four replaced because what I had were the ones with a bad habit of expanding and contracting over time and they'd damage my teeth if they weren't redone.
Here in Mexico we are still using amalgams because of economic issues, composites are significantly more expensive and a lot of people can't afford them.
I had an Amalgum filling in my mouth for about ten years. I also took a lot of SSRI's at the same time. I still experience health issues after the filling was replaced with a composite and building of the meds but it is better without these. That thing was leaking.
They are still done, I work for an older-school dentist and I place and carve them almost every day!

I have a couple of metal fillings from when I was 19 yrs old. I’m 42 now and I’ve never had a problem with any of them! 😁🙏🏼
Yup had mine since 11 and I'm in my late 30s
I still have a small/medium silver filling in tooth #14. Been there since I was like 10, so probably around 1987...😁

I have both types of fillings, and I hate the composite fillings. I wish I could get metal fillings again. The composite ones fall out.

Still in use in Czechia ,EU
I just had 4 of these put in 2 months ago in N.H., U.S.A. I am only 32 yo but I grind my teeth at night so my dentist used amalgum.
We still use these in Scotland! All of mine are amalgam and I’m 22!

One of my metal fillings expanded and cracked my entire tooth in half 😂😂😂
How or why does it expand?

Hey Bentist i have a serious question
I have a question, serious inquiry. If the tooth beside your incisor, closer to the side of the cheek is pulled can you use braces to close that space?
Yes. People who are born with missing teeth often do that
Would you ever get them removed and replace your metal fillings?

well yeah.. every country with free health care still uses those because they are the cheapest.
