I was barely a teen when this song was released. This was the only time the Midnight Special audience gave a standing ovation.
It was like an 8 minute song and they only had 4 minutes to play. Instead of cutting it short they went into double time.
It's a myth that's been around for years, but it's untrue.
I’m a HUGE fan of Focus, and I’m an expert. I know everything about them. You can ask me anything about them, an I’ll answer.
And the result was yodel thrash.
@@Elias_Veine_Wiig Well, Jan, the guitarist, says that they did have to play double time or cut the song short so, I think you are wrong.
Another crazy performance is 'Frankenstein' by the Edgar Winters Group
We had this song on 8-track. My sister was like 5, and this was one of her favorite songs ever. "Find me the yodel song!" "Can we hear the yodel song?" Every time we got in the car, lol. 💚
Oh Shon, you ate gonna laugh your ass off the second he opens his mouth!🤯😂
His parents were both Dutch opera singers. He loved experimenting with his voice. PLUS he truly is a great flute player.
One of the greatest prog rock groups
Honestly, I listen to so many different songs from so many different groups in so many different genres, it’s rare for me to come across something I’ve never heard! You managed it- wow! WILD!! And reading the other comments, even wilder, learning they did this double time. I’m gonna have to go down this rabbit hole….
It was a one-hit -wonder.
@@j.h.3777 Focus is recognized as a significant band in the progressive rock genre and not solely defined by their mainstream hit.
Hits are hits for a reason. They're usually great songs. When there are so many bands to listen to, I would always tell someone to start with all their hits. Deep-cuts are usually not as good.@@bookhouseboy280
You are hilarious, love watching you do these reactions.
you've just witnessed one of the best guitar players EVER ! jan akkerman !
You mentioned the studio version -- I do suggest checking it out -- it's cleaner and not so fast but still really good. It's probably in the comments already that they were told that for this show they had less time than they normally need for this song so they speed it up here. Enjoyed your reaction!
Yup,just as I predicted!🤣🤣🤣🤣
I knew you would laugh your ass off, but bro you have to listen to the studio version. It’s a lot longer and it’s just so good and then you’ll understand this life performance but again great reaction. Keep up the great work bro.
"I have no idea what I'm getting into." 😂😂 Sir, you definitely have no idea...
The studio version is twice the time. They were told to edit the song. The band said, no we'll do the whole song and this happened. They are a Danish band and found a way to make the music language-independent.
Dutch band!
Yes Dutch not Danish
sorry DUTCH
Incredible band, excellent song, amazing performance, double time quick! Check out Edgar Winter’s live version of “Frankenstein” from TV around this time, too.
"An expiration date on his drums..." I have not heard that one before! I love watching you react to these songs. You genuinely
enjoy yourself and that makes it all the more fun to share these classic songs with you. Rock on Shon!!
In 1973 Akkerman was voted Best Guitarist in the World by readers of the UK magazine
Dutch progressive rock band Focus was formed in 1969. They achieved international success in the 1970s with their highly accomplished and unique blend of rock, jazz, and classical music. "Hocus Pocus", the band's most recognizable song outside of Europe, was a surprise hit with the masses and is originally from the classic 1971 album 'Moving Waves.'
This Dutch group was on fire that night! Forty years later Thijs van Leer, your yodeling vocalist, was still at it! Yes, the vocal and whistling and flute breaks are the same every amazing time.
The album version is 6:42 and just as fast paced. One hit wonder. Great tune.
Every time you hear the drum solo you know something is coming
Great reaction ❤❤
This is Prog-Rock. Check out Pink Floyd from the same time period, they had some weird noises in some of their songs too.
And the yodelling etc. is exactly the same each time for the song!
I love this. This cheers me up so much. If you ever feel down, watch this video and you will 100% feel happy again. I enjoy this speeded up version the best. Great reaction. 😁👍🏾
This song came out WAY before the movie! And no, they have nothing to do with each other! I remember watching this on The Midnight Special when it came out! It was crazy awesome!
- This song/performance is never in anybody's mind... until they hear/see it - then, THEY CAN'T GET IT OUT OF THEIR MIND !!! :D
OMG, Shon! I had never heard this before. My initial reaction was the same as yours...I didn't know what to expect, but it wasn't that 😂😂
Oh yes😂this will be an epic reaction.😂😂Enjoy what you are about to experience.
Check out Wilson Pickett’s version of “Hey Jude.” The studio version has Duane Allman on guitar. I think you’d dig it.
Everybody pretty much has the same reaction when they hear and listen to this song. Funny and talented all rolled into one I think they might have been experimenting with some of the funny stuff when they wrote this.😵💫🤐
😂 Looked like you enjoyed it 👍👍
I play that for people they laugh their ass off 😂
Shon, you are a riot Brother. 🤣☮🥁☘
Latke vibes from Taxi????😂😂😂
You weren't ready, but that's okay man...Nobody ever was for this! This is wiiiiild!!!
I couldn’t wait for your reaction to this 😂😂❤️
SHON!! I love your enthusiasm for music. I'd love to sit down for a few hours and give directions down a Multitude of Paths you can take. I envy your journey.
First standing O ever on Midnight Special up til then
Check out Simon & Garfunkel’s Richard Cory.
It's like an eight minute song and they had to do it in four minutes Because they had limited time on stage.
if you liked this, you should check out jethro tull!!!!
He looks like Gargamel.. 😅 great and unique Dutch group! Very talented
This version was played in double time because the show wanted them shorten the song and they refused. It’s quite hilarious and it has absolutely nothing to do with the movie.
You wonder if he does this every time he does. Just think when they were on the road touring at the height of there time to shine I bet they play a couple hundred times a year. Can you imagine what his vocal cords went thru
Yeah Shon...you really should hear the studio version. Just check it out. I think you will love it! 😅
Bro! I can't ever tell what I like more your reactions or the content your reacting to.
There is another longer version of the same performance which is just as insane as this cut. Very talented guys pioneered progressive rock.
Yeah, there's a whole lot of good music like that from Europe in the 70's like Magma from France or Goblin from Italy. Magma invented their. own language, that gets truly insane.
This is great the rock
Possible suggested reaction: "Inside Looking Out" by GRAND FUNK RAILROAD? O also maybe "Tabacco Road" by Edgar Winters.
My son and I watch this when we had a few drinks and crack up every time.. Also A movie called.. Baby driver.. has the best scene with this song
Your reactions as so fantastic, when you laugh it makes me laugh, l was literally crying laughing you are such fun to listen to 😂
Don't try to figure it out. Just enjoy the ride.
Quality reaction
back them good dugs made all the difference
Yep
Fun party track
Love your show. Listen to Fleetwood Mac, midnight special, Rhiannon. #ROCKON
great reaction... best times in music history
Can you imagine this piece is 51 years old?? Focus is a Dutch progressive rock band, founded in 1969. They still sound 'fine sawed off' to me; like when I only heard their music on the radio in my youth. 🤪
Dutch group. The lead singer`s parents were famous opera singers.
PLEASE REACT to Cat Stevens' "Father and Son". Or "Wild World" or every one! Lol😂😂😂
Incredible talent...vocal range is insane. Definitely check out the studio version. They were so good
Talk about originality. Unique? Who did they sound like? And Jan Akkerman was one hell of a shredder on guitar.
This was fun
Introduced by Gladys Knight…not bad!
The band itself was amazing I never heard this. 6:10
Neither had I. Of course, how could you not listen to this and think Ian Anderson?
☮️💙💙💙
❤
you should hear the album version
Betcha didn't expect this non lyric crazy good song, Haha.....you wanted new artist and songs for you to check out so here's one, the group is Dr hook and the song is " cover of the rolling stone" so hilariously good, check out the official video for that one please and thank you!
Check out the Bluegrass version of "Hocus Pocus" by Cleverlys they are awesome!!!!
You want to hear a crazy song hear the band green jelly and the song three little pigs
You have to check out JETHRO TULL "AQUALUNG"
😎👍
Entertaining a lot
try .. arthur brown-fire (the black and white thing video yes )
This is why the arts need to be supported in public schools. Folks from your generation and younger think that they should've been born earlier... nope you should've been funded. I apologize for my generation not making sure the money was there.
Hey Shondrah. For the life of me I cant understand this song. Even more so what was Gladys Night really thinking in her intro😳
At certain points the singer looks like Mel Gibson from the Patriot on a 5-day psychotic drunken bender. 🏄♂️
dat was oprah btw xD
You need to listen to the studio version to see how they sped up the song to fit the time slotted rather than edit the song.
Is it not in the
Soundtrack of Baby Driver ?
Studio version is better than live
Every human can make music via their mouth or instrument. These days everything is digital, or is that an old version of what I’m trying to say? Pink Floyd!
If this causes wtf try out Rock Lobster😊
He was yoddling cause the words were dirty
I laughed right along with you!! They are a Danish band, they wanted to release a song in the USA, but didn't speak English. This is what they came up with!😂
I don’t know what you were expecting either, but if you we’re expecting this, there’d be something wrong with you
your over thinking it too much....this what's called FUN TUNES
NOT from the movie lol

Yep, we Dutch are the best jodlers by faaaaaar(and have zero mountains to boot) Eat that Austria, Peru, Nepal, Kilimanjaro, yaaaawn Rocky M. states, wet Bhutan & pathetic Switzerland and the rest of the silly countries which are a few millimeters above sea-level (cowards ! (but unlike Sweden we're not worried about climate change :) Old school you know.
BTW please send us stillts, we are the tallest peoplle in the world but we love straws and stilts so don't be stingy !
and you said " bonkers " ... ask a guitarist about the scales ... i double dare you
I’m a HUGE fan of Focus, and I’m an expert. I know everything about them. You can ask me anything about them, an I’ll answer. What are you wondering about?
Ive never liked this song... Just because you can, doesnt mean you should...
We dont need no steenking yoldels.
That was their entire greatest hits album
A total waste of four minutes. The lady at the beginning said they was to getha. Yeah right
They are. You don't have to like it, but on the "verse" sections, this band are *crazy* good, amazingly tight and together, especially given the breakneck tempo.
@@TheoZoffrok sorry, its garbage
@@CalmPrayingMantis-wq5fu Fine, you think it's garbage. But are you honestly saying the band aren't together?
@@TheoZoffrok they haven't been together in a long time. I cant put on an old record st fast speed and let my dog howl. Same
