Guys, let's not forget about how very skilled these musicians are,the guitarist were actually called the world's best guitarist back in the days🎸🎶🎶😮
Because of a short time slot they played the song twice as fast.
That's just false information:
you will find the full Version on YT. This one here is cut (not by these guys but the original uploader). You'll find out that they did indeed play more than 15 minutes filled with two of their songs. Everything else is a rumor. But, what actually IS true that they played at a faster pace.
Best wishes
That's Gladys Knight introducing the band
A great blues/soul singer in her own right
I used to get into so much trouble sneaking out of bed to watch Midnight Special. And here you can see WHY I risked getting into that trouble, lol. This is pretty much a birthing of progressive rock in the US. Very talented group of gentlemen that still perform today. This is such a fun version, considering that they had to speed it up to double time due to time constraints allowed for each performer. Just stellar! Not many standing ovations for rock performers on this show. Well deserved.
Regardless of the hysterical stuff, has anyone paid attention to the magnificent guitar work by the amazing Jan Akkerman?
Yeah!!!
Without question excellence on the guitar and a performance worthy of the standing ovation they got.
Miles Davis said about John McLaughlin: " He's the one, the killer." This also applies to Jan Akkerman!
This is my favorite song to watch reactions. And you didn't disappoint me. Such a fun song.
That version has one yodeling verse cut out, the band is still performing
Two months ago (nov. 2023) I saw Focus in The Netherlands. The first time was 50 !!! years ago. Keyboardplayer Thijs van Leer is still ‘jodeling ‘ behind his keyboard. Drummer Pierre van der Linden is also present, great drummer. It was so good. Guitarist Jan Akkerman left the band in the eighty’s. He is still playing and was an example for Eric Clapton. Bassplayer Bert Ruiter died two years ago. This song was used in the film ‘Baby Driver’.
Face movements are his warming up to sing.
...warming up to vocalize..(which Thijs does excellently well)...let's stick to the facts....🤣 ✌️
The story I heard was Thijs had annoyed Jan so Jan was not giving the right cues in the intro and Thijs was trying to follow what he was doing, thinking Jan was going to go off script but then Jan came in as agreed... however Thijs is the embodiment of excentric genius
The greatest example of "Controlled Chaos" in rock music, and was an iconic song in its day. One of those songs I remember exactly where I was when it hit the early FM airwaves ... If you want to check out another song like that one, sample "BALLROOM BLITZ" by Sweet.
you guys were the perfect blend of mystified and excited
That funny thing with the flute was actually a call and response between the flute and the guitar lol
The sound in the flute part is the guitar hitting single notes.
Towards the end of the flute section the guitarist is playing spikey, jab notes on the guitar immediatly following each of those flute notes. The camera just does not show the guitar player during that, so that's how some viewers could easily be confused by what they're seeing vs hearing during that brief part.
Dude, most of us oldschool don't get offended. Not sensitive. Yeah. Peace
Speak for yourself plse. I am offended by his friend who seems to be an ignorant idiot.
This song was a big hit when it was released.
Gentlemen , this one shows out brilliance that was quite underrated .
I've seen quite a few reactions to this video and whether it's on UA-cam or IRL, the most important thing is, they _ALL_ have a great time. Just like you guys did. Amazing song. You owe it to yourself to check out the studio version.
Great happy reaction thanks!
You guys number one on this reaction!
The shrieking thing during the flute-playing was done by Jan Akkerman with his guitar.
If I remember right, the lady who introduced them was Marilyn McCoo from the 5th Dimension, not Oprah. This song is pretty wild played at the right speed, but this was sped up. The Midnight Special wanted them to cut the song because it was too long for the space allotted on the show. Instead, they played the whole song at a faster speed. You should look up the studio version of this song to hear how it should sound.
No,, It's Gladys Knight of Gladys Knight & The Pips.
@happymethehappyone8300 thanks, I couldn't find a video thar included the introduction. Must have been thinking of Solid Gold.
There were 4 songs they did live on de the show. They are all fast and great !!!
There also is a bit longen version, which is even better ! You should watch it too.
That was great ...nice one
The lead singer/flute player in Jethro Tull is Ian Anderson. The name Jethro Tull is an inventor from the middle ages, I think.
You two funny! Miss your face @ Dyce!
🤩😉
you feel the music for sure bro,,,,ha.ha.ha,😂🤣😂 rock on,,,🤘🤘🤘
They sped up their performance in order to squeeze the whole song in, pretty masterful ha. And I heard this version first as a kid so the actual, slower original version just doesn’t sound right to me ha.
Have you guys done Frankenstein?
Creative innovative musicianship masterclass. Here´s the complete midnight special cut: ua-cam.com/video/GyxSvZOby54/v-deo.html
Everyone has an inner Hippie.
Only standing O in Midnight special history up til that point
That was the BEST FUN 😁😁😁
The 70s was a time to experiment. The Drug Culture was everywhere. Check out the studio version.
It's not oprah but Gladys Knight (from Gladys Knight body the pips)
Hocus pocus It's hard to focus You just got bamboozled
There was no need to mask the video = nobody else does and they do not have any issues.
Everyone reacting to this song...😮 where tf did that flute come from..😂😂
The show told this band, hmm, you probably won't be able to play your new song. It's 6 minutes long and we only have a 3 minute slot for you. The band said...NP, we'll take it. 😂😅
Well, you are not the only goofy one. I was about 13 when this came out. I loved it, it was so different and so wild!
😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Yo, yodelling
Do you guys share that dorm room ?
Wrong version to react...there was an unedited complete version.
Can you please react to You can't deny it by Lisa stansfield, music video request plz ❤😊
It's called Yodeling en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yodeling
@ DWAYNE. CARL. HUCHINSON. I. LIKE. THE. BLACK. GUY. ON. THE. RIGHT. REACTONS. !
The introduction, which you didn't show was Gladys Knight. One of my all-time favorite singers. To call her Oprah is a terrible insult. She had talent galore. Oprah? Not at all.
You should check out Gladys Knight and the Pips' "Midnight Train to Georgia." Love her.
@ DWAYNE. CARL. HUTCHINSON. THE. BLACK. GUY. ON. THE. LEFT. LOOKS. BLACK. SINGER. CARL. DOUGLAS. WHO. DID. SONG. KUNG. FU. FIGHTING. WHO. IS. ALSO. BLACK. AND. A. GREAT. SONG
Hippies were more 60s. The 70s they called themselves freaks. I remember. I was one of them.
