I absolutely love how you do the videos all in one take. It’s natural. I can’t stand when you watch a vid and it keeps jerking all over the place because the person edited the hell out of it to try and be perfect and it comes off being annoying as all hell. Yours are natural and in my opinion perfect. Hope you make many many more

  • @bacarandii

I remember visiting a friend at her parents' house in a mid-sized American town (Spokane, WA) in the 1980s. We were sitting in the living room when we heard the sounds of the family's youngest child, a teenage boy, practicing his guitar in his basement bedroom. The unmistakeable acoustic guitar intro came wafting up the stairs, and it was like an epiphany. I said, "I am experiencing an archetypal moment in the late 20th Century Western culture, occupying a suburban house where a teenager is playing THAT SONG!" So it's totally appropriate that you should overlook it -- it's just part of the air we breathe. It's like the water your goldfish swim in. We forget it's even there... but it's ALWAYS THERE!
I can't say I grew up with Led Zeppelin because I was born in the late 1950s and most of my friends considered them to be sort of the kind of band our little brothers listened to. We were much, much more "sophisticated," of course -- listening to folk rock and singer-songwriters. So, I didn't really get into Led Zeppelin (I'm sorry, I just can't bring myself to write "Led Zep") until I was in my 30s. Although, when I was 15, I did babysit for a young couple who had "II" and "Houses of the Holy" and listening to them on headphones blew my mind.

Definitely one of your greatest rants, Andy (you should think about ranking the rants sometime). However you arrived at the album rankings, it's pretty close to how I see things, though for me it's III, IV, II, and I. Now, there are great tracks on the remaining albums, but... Well, maybe it was all that smack Jimmy, but the flame started to flicker with HOTH. Now ITTOD I could have done without entirely...

    8: Led Zeppelin II
    7: Presence
    6: Led Zeppelin I
5: In Through the Out Door
    4: Led Zeppelin IV

    - Dazed and Confused
    - Friends
    - That’s the Way
    - The Song Remains the Same
    - The Rain Song

Thoroughly enjoyable video, made better via the personal connection, but also the pervading sense of the geographical connection through yourself, two of the members and on through the influence of Tolkien even if it had been merely indirect and unconscious.
I’ve never claimed to be Zep’s biggest fan,( and can occasionally feel animated to push back when I feel fans are exaggerating their brilliance), …… BUT …. when I first heard The Song Remains The Same when around 12-13 years old, and had just started playing, I did have my musical mind blown and I still to this day involuntarily hear the songs from that album ‘as I did back then’ and they still represent something that to me is way beyond mere hard rock. After hearing those tracks ‘first’ with their brilliant live arrangements and killa playing, the studio versions would forever pale in comparison and possibly tainted my personal appreciation of the band. That said, this vid has inspired me to revisit their catalogue once again.

Yes, I liked it and I'm subscribed. I very much enjoy your approach, keep up the good work! btw - whatever happened to The Rover? Killer drum intro, fabulous main riff, fabulous following chord sequence, great use of just enough guitar effects, awesome plaintative vocals and lyrics by Robert, and... Jimmy's most underrated solo (and maybe the most underrated in all of classic rock). Incredible phrasing and space placement, just a touch of flash, uses a huge part of the fretboard. I readily agreed with your list as a whole, but for me the The Rover would knock the vast majority of those songs out of their spot. "If we could just join hands.. that's all it takes. Question: if you were to consider creating a list to present to us that consisted of your best/greatest rock songs, how many Led Zeppelin tracks would go on that list? They really were lightning in a bottle, weren't they? Just a couple of queries:
    1. Did Page actually intend to play that way on Hot Dog, or was he so "absent" that he said "oh, screw it"?;
    2. What DID everyone else do during Bonzo's 25 minute long drum solos in '75 and '77? Oh, and during Page's Guitar Solo in '77?; and
    3. Who would have guessed during the 1970s that the band member who would prove to have the greatest and (by some distance) most interesting creative longevity would be the singer?

As always, seeing other's choices are interesting and revealing. Despite the fact that we are both veteran Led Zeppelin fans and mostly see things in a similar vein, it is the differences that say the most. My top Ten Led Zeppelin songs; 10) 'No Quarter' (LIVE version), 9) 'The Song Remains the Same (LIVE version again), 8) Kashmir, 7) 'Over the Hills and Far Away', 6) 'Whole Lotta Love', 5) 'Dazed and Confused' (LIVE version again), 4) 'Achilles Last Stand' (Knebworth LIVE version), 3) 'Since I've been Loving You' (LIVE version again), 2) 'When the Levee breaks', 1) 'Immigrant Song' (LIVE version again). The biggest difference is my preference for many of the best live versions. I saw them at Knebworth 1979, it was breathtakingly better than expected!

I can't really put these songs in any kind of order. But here's my top 12 chronologically:

    2) Immigrant Song
    3) Rock And Roll

    8) In My Time Of Dying
    9) Kashmir
    10) In The Light
    11) Ten Years Gone
    12) Achilles Last Stand
    Here's 13-30 (chronologically)
    13) Good Times Bad Times
    14) Whole Lotta Love
    15) What Is And What Should Never Be
    16) Ramble On
    17) Tangerine
    18) That's The Way
    19) Battle Of Evermore
    20) Stairway To Heaven
    21) Going To California

Agree with some others that ten years gone is excellent and would be in my top ten alongside the Rover, both from their best album although the forth side is perhaps its achilles heal.

There was no more EPICALLY STUNNING concert opening (or experience for that matter) that I ever witnessed than that of Zep kicking off with Immigrant Song and then immediately going into Heartbreaker (1972 tour...refer to How The West Was Won). I was like the guy in that 1970's BOSE speaker magazine ad where the guy is sitting in his easy chair in the living room holding onto the arm rest for dear life as his hair is being blown back. After that 10-12 minute sequence I was never the same again. It was literally the only religious experience I ever had. (BTW, I didn't know ANY of their songs except Whole Lotta Love AM version at the time I attended this show).

Houses .... is my favorite record they made : The song ... , Over the hills ...., No Quarter, The Ocean, ... dancing days ....what a collection, btw your singing immitations are not bad, Robert's harmonica playing is awesum, ... rocky, bluesy as on "Nobodies fault ..." Billie Jean King .. ? used an item that does remind you of a guitar but is called a tennis racket 😆 ... good list ... I would add "Over the hills ...", and "Out on the tiles" and"Custard Pie" "Bring it back home" ...
I actually knew from the beginning it would be hard to boil down LZ to only 30 songs, actually impossible

Thanks Andy! This is one of the best ranking videos of LZ. I enjoyed it a lot! My list would, of course, be a bit different - Immigrant Song, Friends, Four Sticks would make my top 30.
Albums - Side 2 and 3 of Physical Graffiti would be my best LZ album and yes, there are some "not so great" songs on this doublealbum, but I like them all.

Did I write this comment before? It's the one where I tell the story about when I saw Led Zeppelin, this was 1969, John Bonham was so high, well that's what I assumed, that he literally passed out at the drum kit. Performance art, that was. But before that epic event, Jimmy Page bowed his guitar with a violin bow. Never before had I seen anything like that! Keep in mind I was 15 years old, but still. Nice ranking of the songs, Andy. I got so tired of Stairway to Heaven, I swore off listening to Led Zeppelin ever again.
