Update 2023: These are still the settings I would recommend changing when setting up a new Windows 10 PC. For your convenience, *Time Stamps* are included in the video description... Thanks for watching!
Whoopee! For once we have a clear and concise video, in clear English, no music and no-nonsense. Well done! I will come back frequently to learn from you. Thanks a bunch.
Good common sense advice. Very helpful. I'm retired now from doing this for customers in my own business, and I've used Macs myself since forever, so when friends and family still ask me for help - currently with Windows 10 which I've had no reason to even look at otherwise - videos like this are invaluable to bring me quickly up to speed with where everything is now and anything new. My sincere thanks.
I just got my new Ryzen gaming computer and i love the Dark mode and the automatic mode to take away the blue in the screen!! its such a lifesaver now when i am working on papers later one in the night.
One of the best instructional video ever, I am a late-migrator from Windows 7 and I have quite a lot to catch up with, so I was playing this video and hammering those settings at the same time. Sweet...
Personally, I check all of my Settings every time there is a Windows update... my Settings always change themselves. I talked to Microsoft about this & they don't seem to care that it is annoyingly UN-user-friendly. Control Freaks!!!
Joe Johnson this is misleading. Ubuntu asks if users want to send error reports and usage statistics, you are asked during the installation process if you are ok with that (it's one checkbox, not convoluted settings that reset after an update like in Windows 10). If you do agree, it collects data such as general information about the hardware (so they see what people use it on, so they can develop drivers appropriately), time taken to finish the installation (so they can optimize this process), settings selected during the installation process and non-identifiable stuff like that. This is far from what Windows 10 does and you have very clearly given the option to disable this during the installation and in the settings. Manjaro has a toxic community? Well that's interesting, I always though they were noob friendly and want to establish themselves as arch for humans. Must be different personal experiences. The argument for MX Linux is that is has a "complete graphical user interface" - that's just 99% of distros, that's not something unique to MX Linux. If you ask me, I recommend going with Kubuntu, as it is the most used OS (Ubuntu) with the best GUI that looks more like Windows with its defaults but can be made to look however you want to if you want to customize it at some point or another. But Windows users will feel right at home here.
@Joe Johnson "It's not 99% of Linux distros that have a complete G.U.I. because if you have to use the command line and or enter commands that should of been filled in already it doesn't have a complete G.U.I." Then neither Windows, Linux or Mac have a "complete GUI" - try disabling the default apps that ship with W10 (but not with the N edition) without a command line. You don't really have to use CLIs with Ubuntu derivates for what you'd expect are the use cases of typical computer users. There is advanced stuff with any OS where you have to edit either the registry, system files or enter some commands into a terminal/PowerShell to achieve your goal.
Sure I have a degree in CS but don't know what I'm talking about, what else is new? Any reasons why I'm wrong or just because you currently feel like disagreeing with someone?
I learned so much from your video. I saved it to my library so I hope you don’t delete it anytime soon. I’m on my tablet right now but want to use the info later when I have my laptop out. Like everyone else is saying it is so clear and no distracting music in the background! Thank you so much for your time. And oh yeah, I subscribed to your channel.
That's pretty dumb expression... xD The disk space that stores the 1s and 0s of this video weighs next to nothing... Most of the information here is very obvious and well known, but I still think it's worth more than that man. :D
Thanks for your very helpful videos, but as an older person i often don't know which setting is best for me and once i go out of the settings i'll forget where to go back to change the setting back if i should need to. Your videos do help a lot though!!
Really good video. Thanks for taking the time to put it up for me and everyone else. It's always nice to find videos and information that help us solve problems.
This was really good. I tend to go through my settings carefully when I get a new machine, and yet many of these escaped me. Exceptional content guys, and thanks for the tips! :)
As a 20 plus year Apple user, I finally had to get a PC in order to utilize my work software. You are rocking my world! Everything with PC is greek to me, but you have been a lifesaver. Thank you for your very informative videos.
new tip=In the search box on the taskbar, type settings, then choose it from the list of results. Select System > Storage > This PC and then scroll down the list and choose Temporary files. Under Remove temporary files, select the Previous version of Windows check box and then choose Remove files.
Most of these I already knew. However, I did learn some new and useful tips. I often disagree with peoples suggested settings. There were no suggestions here that I disagreed with. Most of his recommendations I already had set but did tweak a few I was not aware of. The biggest problem I have with windows 10 is the automatic update and reboot. I have a home control systems that is running under windows 10. Occasionally it doesn't restart correctly due to not being shutdown properly. There is nothing nice about coming home at night and the lights don't turn on like they are suppose to because the home control computer was restarted. Not so bad on other PC's but a major pain on the home control system. I have actually been thinking about switching it to Linux just to avoid that problem.

Thank you so much for your videos! I have been kicking and screaming about Win10 ever since they started testing way back and did NOT want to go there as I was more than happy with Win7! Fast forward to now and I finally broke down and ordered a laptop and I was dreading Win10. Your videos helped me to see and understand that there is still a lot of what I loved about Win7 in this monster Microsoft has created and made it a lot easier to make the changes I needed to in order to make Win10 something I can live with! Thanks!!
This really is excellent. I don't like all the privacy things set as they were, but being able to change things is good. Your piece de resistance was showing me how to change the app background from light to dark. I use a Dell 3014 monitor and the expanse of white light was too much. Thanks very much. Very grateful.

@@r13hd22 Sure, are you going to run any other browser in a VM for the extra security? For me the browser wars are over. I use browsers like I use Apps. Chrome? Why would anyone ever use that memory hog. Edge is as secure as IE was, as in not...and im not surprised that you would use Edge for a thing that has been available long before Edge even existed. TTS software is not new and there are plenty of free options...MSFT has made billions off of the lazy and uninformed.
@@r13hd22 Again, I use the browser for the feature, I don't care about it's other problems. Chrome is first to allow me to install PWAs in windows from the browser. I love the help you gave me for not having to reopen all the programs i had to when i hit lag when in game. just had to get back in game not reopen 15 other programs.... thanks so much...
Nice. I had most of these done, as matter of course, but was looking for a good how to for several friends, and this was best one I've found; thanks. :-)
These are some really nice basic settings that need to be changed. I agree with most of these. The one setting is about auto-loading programs after restart. Firstly, a user should make sure everything is shut down anyways upon a restart. However, I do like having my email auto-load if there was a restart, planned or otherwise. The biggest issue with this setting is that it's really "2" settings in one. 1) Auto sign-in to automatically "finish" setting up device. 2) Reopen apps after restart With #1, if this option is turned off and the system needs to do more than 1 restart or login to finish updates, it won't. So even if it restarts in the middle of night when you are sleeping, you could come back to a system that takes 30mins or longer to "finish" updates after you login. I wish MS would actually separate these two options
I'm not really a fan of Windows but find myself in the position of needing one in order to accomplish a few tasks that I can't seem to take care of in Android. I'm going to be ordering an inexpensive device that will probably only be used twice or three times a month, so these tips are very helpful. I have also seen a couple other videos here that I will save, along with this one, in my tutorials. Thank you for putting these helpful videos out for the novice user.
Thanks for a great video. Have you done a similar one for Win 8.1? One more question. Have you done a video on upgrading from Win 8.1 to Win 10? I dread the thought of the many hours of “getting back to where I am now with my apps after the update” :)
I agree with turning "off" downloading from other PCs but I leave it on and allow the updates to only optimize from my local network. This is safe enough for me and as I have multiple computers on the same domain it seems redundant to download the same updates over and over again.
For win pro users: To disable the "Updates are available" popup in Windows 10, do the following. Open an elevated command prompt. Ensure that the console is opened in the folder C:\Windows\System32. If not, then type the following command to change the directory: cd /d "%Windir%\System32" Type or copy-paste the following command: takeown /f musnotification.exe This command will take NTFS ownership of the executable file that produces the popup. The next command will prevent the operating system from accessing the file. icacls musnotification.exe /deny Everyone:(X) Now, repeat the same for the MusNotificationUx file. takeown /f musnotificationux.exe icacls musnotificationux.exe /deny Everyone:(X) This should be enough to stop Windows 10 from showing these annoying notifications.
phasing out control panel? you mean the way they phased out notepad? well, ok, i have a tip. years ago, i created a folder called "quick". in it i put my most often used shortcuts- including calculator, character map, command prompt, computer management, control panel, eventvwr, internet options, msconfig, notepad, regedit and wordpad. i copied that file to a disk. each time i get a new computer or a new windows setup, that is the first folder i copy to my desktop. i then make a toolbar folder for it on my taskbar. this way, no matter how windows tries to hide those files, i can still find them. they are right there on my taskbar when i need them. i have copied those files repeatedly to different disks to prevent corruption.
Thanks for the reminders! I recently changed my hard drive and updated windows. I forgot to re-change some of the settings :/.. In the "all pc's" setting>[Upload Settings] >Advanced Options if I uncheck the "Limit how much bandwidth...to other PC's..." and "Monthly upload limit" boxes will it override the unchecked "Allow downloads from other PC's"? Thanks again!
Change the Advanced Update settings update channel to the business setting for 'feature updates' (aka 'this is where we use the public to bug test new versions). This will delay twice yearly version updates by at least a couple of months while all the bugs are ironed out. You can't do this in the home version sadly. Alternatively go back to Windows 7 for a quiet life and none of this crap- sadly you may be out of luck on some newer laptops with drivers though.
If I wouldn't own Horizon 3 and Motorsport 7 i would still use Windows 7 till it's obsolete. Because when the time comes we won't have the option anymore to use that rocksolid system where the operator is the king.
Honestly the best is to create a full image of the system once new install has been performed.. Restore points isn't safe malicious software can hide in them plus most. Often system restore points don't resolve big problems and can sometimes make stuff worse... Format new install then restore image is safest and it's quite fast to do

Windows 10 is indeed, a fast OS.. modern...beautiful. But you have to turn off, disable, delete, uncheck.... 80% of its features so it can be usable. Windows 7 is the best fix for now.

Superb Brilliant Clear Accurate Informative Useful - I will bookmark this video in case I need it again as things are sure to be defaulted to something I didn't ask for when I get an update to W10. What an immensely over fussy muddled and unnecessarily complicated windows 10 is. Long term annoyances could very well push me back to an Apple laptop!
Step one, unless you NEED a particular program that is only available for Win10 is to format the drive and install Linux. I recommend Ubuntu 18.04LTS for ease of use. If you like the LOOK of Win7 then I'd use either the Gnome2 or MATE environment. If you like the look of Win10 then KDE Plasma is an option. Keep in mind, except for games and some HIGHLY specialized applications, you can find something for FREE to do the job under the Penguin!
@@Crashawsome it's not difficult to change the desktop environment in Ubuntu. But yes, for a user who doesn't care too much about security issues Win10 is almost as mindless an option as MacOS.

There are more fast ways to get to settings in Win10. Type Control + s, then type 'env' takes you right to the Environment Variables Tab of the System Properties.

takeown /f musnotification.exe
This command will take NTFS ownership of the executable file that produces the popup.
The next command will prevent the operating system from accessing the file.
icacls musnotification.exe /deny Everyone:(X)
Now, repeat the same for the MusNotificationUx file.
takeown /f musnotificationux.exe
icacls musnotificationux.exe /deny Everyone:(X)
This should be enough to stop Windows 10 from showing these annoying notifications.
Great Video , lots of info very important to know to run the system more efficient , Tks for Sharing
Awesome Video....I learned a lot!!! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome! Clear, concise and very educational. Thanks!
You are AMAZING! Love your videos. Thank you for your help.
Thank You and of course, thumb Up from Switzerland!
phasing out control panel? you mean the way they phased out notepad? well, ok, i have a tip. years ago, i created a folder called "quick". in it i put my most often used shortcuts- including calculator, character map, command prompt, computer management, control panel, eventvwr, internet options, msconfig, notepad, regedit and wordpad. i copied that file to a disk.
each time i get a new computer or a new windows setup, that is the first folder i copy to my desktop. i then make a toolbar folder for it on my taskbar.
this way, no matter how windows tries to hide those files, i can still find them. they are right there on my taskbar when i need them. i have copied those files repeatedly to different disks to prevent corruption.
Excellent stuff!
Just what I needed. Thank you, so much!!!
I like the theme and appearance of your menus. See how yours are all black with white text? How do you do that? Is it down-loadable?
First thing I change is more space at task bar (no Cortana). Make easier for me to follow your video and make changes at the same time.
That's what I did too. Actually all of it annoyed me. I don't know if it even works anymore right now. Lol
Honestly the best is to create a full image of the system once new install has been performed.. Restore points isn't safe malicious software can hide in them plus most. Often system restore points don't resolve big problems and can sometimes make stuff worse... Format new install then restore image is safest and it's quite fast to do
Very useful. Thank you
Verry interesting and explained in a well understood way....listening cn sometimes be toxic instead off feeding the brains due to an annoying voice, talking in an unknown language that should be English 🙊BUT you changed my opinion of listening cn take more energy thn running 3 times until the 2nd floor.ty and as listening is now added to my soul food list I cant wait to scroll down to the next video 😌. Namaste 🥳
thank you very much fot these tips my friends
Thank you for sharing with us !!!
really nice video thanks for this sir
Thanks for the information !
Thanks so much. Well done
Thanks for the 411! Always good info here.
Thanks for posting this.
Thanks dude. Simple and to the point !
Thanks for the information. Great stuff
Windows 10 is indeed, a fast OS.. modern...beautiful. But you have to turn off, disable, delete, uncheck.... 80% of its features so it can be usable. Windows 7 is the best fix for now.
Lucas Lagarto Windows 7 is obsolete...
@@bfapple Obsolete? Hum..maybe in a few years. But it is lightweight, has simple UI, no bloat, no telemetry, no forced automatic updates, stable as a rock, no stupid native apps/live tiles and last but not least... it is FAAAST !!
Lucas Lagarto I’m not denying that, the problem is that it is obsolete now. Modern hardware won’t run 7.
Give O&O a try and also have a look at Linux Mint 😉
dB Your brain is obsolete
THANKS! I've made a bunch of changes from this video. I knew of some of these, but WOW.
thanks you very much for nice info
Very straight-forward. Thanks for these very helpful tips. Windows 10 seems not too bad at all. 👍
Thanks kindly. I finally picked up a new computer that has Widows 10 on it. I resisted upgrading until now. I actually enjoyed XP and probably 7 the most. :)
Thank you, helped me a lot Cheers
Superb Brilliant Clear Accurate Informative Useful - I will bookmark this video in case I need it again as things are sure to be defaulted to something I didn't ask for when I get an update to W10. What an immensely over fussy muddled and unnecessarily complicated windows 10 is. Long term annoyances could very well push me back to an Apple laptop!
good job keep it up i subscribed thanks
I cannot even update my satnav in linux never mind other programs that I use (and paid for) until they get their act together I will not be trying them again.
Isn't this topic about windows settings?
These are great settings advice! I am changing a lot of things. If I can read my notes. LOL Thanks so much for explaining those all important settings. I have no book to reference...
Hi and thank you for sharing your video. I was experiencing crazy activity with my laptop and attempted to follow your instruction, however, I was unable to locate cortona under setting. How may I fix these options if the options aren’t available to choose?
Thank you for this. I've only just installed win 10. I'm not liking the layout at all and have been frustrated many times trying to find simple things such as control panel. Any more help on windows 10 would be welcome. I'm sure i'm not the only one who needs more help.
There are more fast ways to get to settings in Win10. Type Control + s, then type 'env' takes you right to the Environment Variables Tab of the System Properties.
Thanks mate. Ill try that when I get out of bed.
AdamsTaiwan Where do I type it?
Same here
I just downgraded to windows 7 and I'm very happy, windows 7 is the best windows.
Hey you are the best and thank you so much!! Actually this is excellent!
Thank you for this :)
