In the 80s and 90s, Bollywood heroines and heroes' mother were significantly used as pawns by villains to bring heroes to their feet. For the past few years, we've been seeing a slight transition in the female characters in that respect. We've many female characters who'd face the challenges, thus proving that they don't need a knight in shining armor to stand guard.
Wasn't Sita too used as a pawn to bring Ram to his feet in Ramayana ?
This is very much relevant today in our society. When any revered male celeb makes a mistake then its the female family member whos always targeted. Eg: Dhoni's daughter ziva was getting rape threats from strangers when he didnt perform well. Its deep embedded patriarchy which drive us to think women are the easiest target

i think it's not right to say that sita n Draupadi were vulnerable
Sita as a young princess use to go for shikaar( hunting) she lifted the shiv dhanush during a game also,
she also use to give advises to ram in administrative matters and when she was in lanka she warned ravana of severe consequences even if he touches her
Draupadi was most strongest women of Mahabharata she planned the murder of Keechak who once assaulted her , she purified her hair by blood of dusanana
so it's not right to say they were vulnerable all the time
Yes you are right the were not vulnerable but in delimma ,, ma sita was prime Minister of Mithila and a warrior class lady but no one alone can fight a mighty army of sri Lanka alone.
And same with draupadi devi she was too a strong woman without her the great kurukshetra war would have not happen.

There are also instances in the epics(Mahabharath and Ramayan) where women are shown as strong willed and are glorified. The amount of cherry picking The Swaddle team does baffles me.
Even Ram with the whole Vanar Sena had difficulty in defeating Raavan. The most sane choice Sita had was to wait for her husband to help her. She is smart enough to know that she isn't in Ayodhya and Raavan wouldn't simply leave her if she tries to escape. And The Swaddle portraying this as if Sita was waiting to glorify Ram is dumb as hell.
And the Draupadi's disrobing in a royal courtroom shows that she vows to take revenge for the insult done to her and even curses her husbands for what they did. Now that's standing up for oneself and showing authority over one's body.
And there are so many occasions in the epics where they are seen as equally important and headstrong. What part of this shows you that they were damsel in distress. They are by far the most self sufficient women in these epics.
When though?Like I did read somewhere that Draupadi was a trained warrior but why don't current depictions of Mahabharat show that?
@@missgranger9723 Did you know that Kaikeyi was a warrior from a young age and she saved Dasaratha's life in a battle, in which she fought like a real queen? This is why Dasaratha was indebted to her for life and asked her to wish for anything that she desired. Great video! However my personal takeaway from the Mahabharata was that even though Draupadi had 5 husbands, not one of them could protect her in her greatest time of need. However once she surrendered unto Krsna he sheltered her from being disgraced in front of her own male relatives, who also did nothing to intervene on her behalf. I believe that a women can find the strength within to protect herself and the people she loves, but I personally believe that strength comes from a divine source.
While I agree with almost all of the points you put forward but I strongly disagree with you calling Draupadi,a damsel in distress.Lord krishna was not protecting draupadi's honour,he was just paying off the debt which Draupadi has on him. Also don't forget it was Draupadi who fired the flames of Mahabharata because her honour was breached. She was depicted as a warrior capable of using weapons at her disposal aka her connections.
Exactly! Even Mahabharata is a lesson, of how much can insulting a woman cost you.

@@CoderVroni yeah if they talk about it as if you guys will support this channel 😂
@@nikithageorge441 we will, a true feminist will, Don't know about the leftist though
@@CoderVroni whether it is wrong or right, it’s a debate for another day. As to why only talk about Ramayana / Mahabharata - because this is not an analysis on religion or rituals. It is an analysis on culture and how it shaped the ‘damsel in distress’ stories in Bollywood. Islam may be the second largest religion in the world, but in our general Indian context, Islamic cultures and values are generally much much less relevant. For example- does the general Indian public know any stories or mythology of Islam ? No, right? But we all are familiar with Hindu texts like Ramayana and Mahabharata, hence it is obvious that the stories we hear from these two will have an influence over our storytelling techniques.
In no way the narrator has implied that Ramayan or Mahabharata are not feminist or are patriarchal. The narrator has only showed how they have played a part in our general conscience because of how influential and relevant they are, not any Islamic or Christian or Buddhist mythology.
@@nixednamode3607 I agree! But wasn't Draupadi a powerful lady who stood against her insult? Even as mentioned in the above comment Krishna was not even present in the assembly, she just remembered his name, because he have told her to do so. We don't even know that notation of saree coming out of Krishna's hand is even real or imaginary. Even I remember Krishna during my tough times, does that mean I need some man to solve my problems?
Now coming up on Islam, I think you and I are lucky that we don't have to wear hijab or burkha, face triple talaq, are allowed to go in temples, and even things like halala. You can even google how Kuran states a lady as her husband's property. Not all but many around us are facing all this torture, and I think not speaking about these things just because of the fear of a highly offensive community cannot be justified anyway.
I'm rewatching this video after having watched NH 10 for a second time. Another thing that struck me was the way they showcased how men use the words like b1tch or wh0re or "randi" as it is depicted in the movie to make a woman feel dirty and inferior. Anushka's character first sees the word on the door of the women's toilet that she tries to erase. She later sees it again written in her husband's blood when she finds his dead body. Men don't care if the woman they are calling a "randi" is actually promiscuous. The word is used by them to make a woman feel small, inferior and dirty, like she's a worm in the ground. You'll see men in swaddle's comment section or on Instagram and twitter repeatedly use this word as soon as they lose an argument with a woman or if a woman does anything that challenges their world view. It's sort of like indian men's version of the n word for women. It's supposed to remind women that their honor in this patriarchal society is fleeting and that no matter what they do or achieve in life, they'd be a woman who is susceptible to being called a b1tch or a wh0re by anyone who pleases.

the worst part about all of this being originated from the epics is that they've interpreted it all wrong.
Anyone who's read even "the palace of illusions" or "the forest of enchantments" knows that women in epics are definitely not damsels in distress. and those books are some percentage fiction too. Imagine the real epics.
Draupadi was "saved" by Krishna, yes. But she's the one who gave the whole sabha the curse which was the birth of the great war at Kurukshetra, she's one of the primary reasons for the war. + that scene shows us how those men are egoistic when consumed by power and how even a full-court couldn't speak up against that heinous scene + Krishna "saving" Draupadi is not just "a knight saving his princess", it's a friend or a brother helping her out
Little clarify:
Sita had agency to beyond ‘leting know Rama’, she choose to be rescued by the Rama, so that Rama could kill Ravana and rescue other women from the Arrogant guy.
Right
same with mahabharat, draupadi cannot be reduced to a 'damsel in distress'. She plays a major role in bringing about the epic war.
@@esr2687 but in the _sabha_ during her molestation, she became “damsel”, and krishna rescued her.
Fully agreed. A lot of people tend to look at Sitaji as a weepy wife waiting to be rescued. Her agnipariksha is also tainted with lots of misconceptions. I hope we understand the essence of our texts soon
Why is her husband's reputation more valuable than her mental health, safety and comfort? She was taught from childhood that husband is god, she she should behave in a particular way, etc. She could have escaped with Hanuman. She didn't do it because then Ram won't get the glory.

It was the time of Kali puja and me and my mother went to a very close pandal to celebrate and worship( I went with her because I was excited), and we would be returning at about 1 am in the night. So naturally my mother was scared, and asked father who probably wouldn't be able to defend himself to come along with us incase something happened. 1978- Don -The character of Roma did not need a man for her protection
1980- Insaf Ka Tarazu
1988- Zakhmi Aurat
1987- Sitapur Ki Geeta

Nice video. But please please please research properly before putting Ramayan and Mahabharat references. I don't agree with anything you said in its context. Poorly researched.
there is also so many other religions and language films rather than hindi and hindus.....while mentioning India show those religious films and language films or shows and others religions too..... otherwise it is contributing partially towards himdu phobia....not perfectly women empowerment 🙏
In every stage of life everyone should be capable and responsible to do everything
We always had Kali. Didn't know NH-10 was needed to show that women can unleash terror when they want to.

I really loved nh10.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣, Ek aur mazaak.
@Lily Davis Ya my opinion is not neded, her points are enough😂😂😂.
I miss seeing a good damsel in distress scene. Rare to see in cinema.
this idea of damsel in distress is not only limited to 'protection' of some kind, but has become a normalcy in daily life. Like, its the man's job to hold the luggage, or open gates, or even drive when together, etc. I am not saying helping, is a threat to freedom of women, simply the idea that we cant do these simple things are suggestive of a much deeper belief of inequality. this even creates dissent in minds of men who eventually feel women to have become a burden, thus increasing the gap in understanding both the genders.
In the real world damsels are those play the 'VICTIM CARD'. real ones fight and survive.
Sita wasn't a damsel in distress.
You know how humiliation of women takes place in islam till yet? Or you just enjoy being blind knowingly? What was the logic of involving ramayana and Mahabharata here? Why don't you ever give example of how Mahabharata was war just for the sake of respect for Dropadi?
Hypocrites
I still remember every scene of this movie. I mean its so real its hard to forget.
The whole Ramayana is about fighting , ego anger , lust , through devotion , patience , its a leela by ram
Yeah and mohammad was saving 9 yo aisha by inducing his dk .
The film and this review- both are absolutely superb.
Don't mention our sacred books mahabharata and ramayana in here when you have no knowledge about them .Sita and Draupadi were warriors .
real life mein koi achanak professioanl fighter ni bn jata but movies mein hr hero aisa hi hota h
I'm glad a lot of ppl are speaking about how the left loves to portray Hinduism and it's culture as the epitome of patriarchy time and again. The only reason it has degraded over the years is because of ppl like on this channel have existed throughout and misunderstood religious texts to their own benefit. Sadly they aren't willing to talk about actual problems faced by women from other religions cuz we all know how controversial will that get. So go ahead blaming hindu epics without any deep understanding and knowledge.
Ok Right Wing lover. 💀

by the looks of it you are the kind of man that women need help from. Don't act like you were a gentleman who helped women before this video and now this video has suddenly changed your mindset. You are vermin and will always be vermin.
70's and 80's were a clicheèd masala Era for almost all the film industries in India, but there was someone called director, K. BALACHANDER (Dada saheb Parker awardee) of Tamil Film industry and first feminist director in TN.... all his films will have an unconventional feminist female lead without any man/hero supporting her..
1. She was a single woman who is a primary bread winner of the family.
2. She was a prostitute who was pushed to prostitution for her family well being.
3.She was a divorcee who walked out of an abusive marraige.
4. She was a ambitious women who doesn't need man by her side.
5. She was never a damsel.
6. She was a rape victim who got pregnant, doesn't end up marrying the rapist but to another good man.
7. She was the first one to stood against her own mother in-law.
These movies came out in the late 70's and 80's where all film industries including tamil movies showcased women as object and damsel.
No his women centric movies.. doesn't show our heroine playing a sexy cop or action heroine with glamorous outfits and item numbers.. they were regular women we meet in life with goals that goes beyond love/marriage or child birth.
Please do a video about him..
❤👍👏👏👏
Before you make any comment on Ramayan please make sure to read and understand it! Better you not make any comment! Keep your criticism till Bollywood,it will be better
A good explanation but could you put not just the Indian epics along with other epics because most of the religion based epics or stories are mostly misogynistic or shows the woman as a damsel.
Womrn should become physically strong and do exercises which increases muscle power
Everything aside, why do scholars trace back these things to the INFLUENCE of HINDU epics???? And FYI, Sita Maa didn't give her agency to Shri Ram... Lord Vishnu came in the avatar of Ram to kill Ravana (Since Ravana had a lot of boons and one of it was that he was immortal and couldn't be killed by anyone less than Shiva)... So the whole Ramayana was scripted in such a way to lure Ravana to death... Everyone was kind of playing a role in the story and when they were done they went back to the DEVLOK... Same with Sita Maa... And talking about Mahabharata, you're comparing Draupadi to Shri Krishna(who is the preserver of this world)... Of course, he had powers... Therefore, he protected her. You people and So called scholars dare to refer Hindu epics as Influence for these things because nobody gives a shit about Hindu religion... Baki religions ka reference leke dikhao na... Desh mein andolan ho rhe honge
Sick stories made up everywhere, I don't understand why do movies even potray/show violence in the first place. It needs to stop.Stop potraying violence 🙏Stop bringing out messages which weren't even born there in the first place. Stop taking all the shitty words as humour, it's high time ,Mr Cinema,Stop polluting, start processing goodness. Violence is just illiteracy at it's peak, any kind.🙏
This is Lovely video I also like how you presented the fact that men are also vulnerable and they are not invincible how to do and die as well
Now apart from that I would like to say that whenever there is a feminist video which is pointing out the issue women face in reality why is there are always one or two people who always come and cry about the totally different issue mostly it's always men if you have so many grievances then start a menenist movement and post videos about that why are you coming here and commenting hate huh keyword hate
I have always seen that when there is news about r*pe there will always be a comment saying not all men are like this or that it must be woman's fault
I have never seen LGBTQ people or transgenders do this and hey suffer equally as us it's always you men that have a problem why don't you make you your own movement huh?
I am not saying that men can't get raped or abused to anything they are human but by hating feminist without knowing what it truly stand up for is bullshit you are just inviting hate on you
Just like all.men are nit rapist similarly all feminist don't hate men
NH10 shows it clearly that women can take up the mantle to Self-protect themselves.
But it is a rare scenario under extreme situations.
Yes Obviously Men are not Invincible, but they are more likely to survive such confrontations and save their partner, either by fight or flight.
The reason here is not the Physical strength but the willingness and readiness to sacrifice oneself for their loved ones. It's like a trade off that Men do that to raise a family Women are more important by comparison, so their lives are on High-priority.
Maybe it's a biological thing or maybe thousands of years of cultural training, But today it is so ingrained in the Head that , When it comes to Family ,A Man would hardly even flinch before laying down his life.
Modern feminism are the reasons why men are suffering? Not all feminist but fake feminist
@@sohit7706 women hating on men in the garb of feminism makes me sick to my core.
@@dev6096 Yes it is this hate that causes women to use men and make them suffer. And in reality no one cares and listens to men's issues. Men are humans as well. Again these feminist are the reason why women have started hating men.
