I think it’s really cool that after all these years, and all of the cars Doug has driven, he still gets this enthusiastic about driving a new car, and somehow the automakers keep raising the bar enough to get Doug almost speechless.
I don't mind the yellow and silver, but yes the red and blue with matching blue wheels is the most tasteless design to come out of Italy since Berlusconi's art collection 🤮
Whenever Doug reviews a car, I check if I can download it for Assetto Corsa. It was a super surreal experience to sit in a Lambo SVJ in VR, while listening to Doug point out the quirks and features as I'm looking at them, like he's sitting in the car with me at a dealership. Another one is the Corvette C8. I had Doug's video on the car's infotainment display for that one. Car makers really should release official models of their cars more often like this. It's great marketing.
As silly as the name is, I actually like the fact that Ferrari refers to the V6 in the 296 GTB as the "Piccolo V12", because I won't deny, this V6 does genuinely sound pretty good.
This car does in fact have an (active) rear spoiler, aside from the (non-active) one at the rear window which you've pointed out. Top gear discussed this in their article about it, titled "Ferrari 296 GTB: here's how the tech works" under the heading "Aero - rear spoiler" and I've seen it deploy out of its hiding place in a few videos, too. It looks very strange but kind of cool, too. It's that black strip which runs between the two rear taillights, right below the lip of the trunk. It deploys almost straight up, vertically. It's very well-hidden and doesn't deploy often so it's not strange it is overlooked. I wouldn't know it either if I hadn't seen it deploy in a video and wanted to know what the heck that thing was that I saw sliding out of the rear. Good review Doug
I swear Doug might just be calling those backlit capacitive sensors/buttons screens to trick us into raising the viewer interaction stats. If so: clever; the rapscallion.
Its interesting that ferrari and porsche have such different design philosophies when it comes to steering wheel. Porsche offers a wheel completely devoid of buttons while ferrari cover theirs with essential vehicle functions. Porsche include a mechanical-ish "turn key" start while ferrari have a little capacitive button. I definitely prefer the Porsche approach.
Not only that but as I understand you can still get manual transmissions on most 911 models. I tend to prefer cars from the 90’s and early 2000’s but the 911’s look great to me even to this day. I know Porsche probably makes more money selling SUV’s and sedans so I’m just glad they still make enthusiasts cars.
It's so that you don't have to take your hands off the wheels to do anything while driving, just like F1 cars, it's a nod to their racing pedigree and the prioritisation of the driving experience.
I was amazed about the 180K replacement battery pack to do every 3/5 years to keep it perfect. Kinda crazy to me. I 'd rather see this V6 in the lightest ferrari ever produced. But I am surely an old guy to think about this Lotus type of toys.
“Lightest Ferrari ever produced” is not possible today bud. Cars have been getting heavier and heavier forever and Ferrari has multiple cars from the 50’s that weigh under 1750 lbs.

I always find it weird when insanely expensive cars like this are using the inferior touch controls. The only reason I can think of is that they want to appeal to some newly rich crypto bros who want a "modern" approach, even when it is inferior.
Great review but he forgot to add that the car has (without the Fiorano pack) easily one of the most compliant and livable suspensions in its class. Getting out of a 992 GT3 into this is like stepping into a Bentley. The ride is so comfortable despite it being so geared towards maximum grip.
the 488 is one of the most underrated cars ever. Beautiful car from every angle and much more handsome than the regular 458 without a doubt - it has such a presence on the road without being too showy. truly one of the best modern day supercars ever - ppl don't talk about it enough. If it was naturally aspirated it would be loved so much more - but having been driven in one the turbo lag isnt even noticeable.
I can’t believe the world I live in… those horsepower figures are just completely insane to me. I grew up thinking 300 was quite a lot, and common cars had like 90-150… now common cars are all mostly 200-300, and sports cars are 300-1700!!!
My current car has 134 bhp. I don't know how I'd even comprehend some of these new ones. Some of the EVs are insane - family crossovers with like 600 bhp is just begging for legislation.
I’d be very happy with a F136 F 4.5L NA Flatplane V8. It sounds better than all V6, all crossplane V8s, most V10s, and most V12s. But if there were more lax regulations, there could very well be a supercharged 4.5L V8 Ferrari. It will make it sound even better because superchargers make the exhaust louder instead of quieter unlike turbochargers. It will sound like an angrier F458 Italia with a whine similar to the turbocharger in a V6 turbo hybrid F1 car.
Actually, there is a small ring that screws into the key to create a key ring. The dealer typically installs it prior to delivery. Of course if you don’t want it, you don’t have to have it.
The 296 is my favorite Ferrari since the La Ferrari and 458 era, it is a work of art, the best way to make a Hybrid, by using the benefits that downsizing gives you! Its only downside is all of the touch buttons, but other than that? This is A MASTERPIECE. ❤️❤️ Also, ever notice how we say "The 458 level is the entry level Mid-Engine Sports Car for Ferrari" as if they released more? Like, now the have the SF90 but before it was either 458 or the ultra special edition LaFerrari if you wanted a mid engine Ferrari 🤔
Hot take, I think the ferrari 296 is the best “mid level” Ferrari to cone out after the 458. The 488 just felt like a lesser version of the 458, and idk what the hell the F8 was supposed to be. The 296 being a V6 sounding like a V12? This thing is a RIOT
Not really it’s a downgrade. A new for this administration V6 in the vain of what the Dino was. I saw one at my local Ferrari dealership. I’m 190 and 5’ 10” and I felt cramped in it especially height for my head. My nephew who is 13 got in and it fit him well at 5ft 4” and 120. It also had very hard seats that the 458 did not have. Felt like I was seating on a park bench. It was around $404,000. Not worth it for a hybrid V6…I’d much rather a F8, 488 or 458 they are plenty great enough for me and sound glorious with that honest to goodness V8. These V6 or the SF90 won’t have good appreciation in the future the prices of used SF90’s show this. I can see the writing on the walls.
@@jasonknight5863 first off, good for you being 5’10 190 lol and for being in the market for a ferrari 😂 and ig your right, for a hybrid “road car” it should he a lot more accommodating, but I still think the car as a whole is more exciting than the 488

Right. It's a vertical spoiler. I find Doug is good at "quirks and features" but if you are looking for a deeper technical and drivers viewpoint, there are better channels. He missed a ton of relevant technical and design updates to the new GX, which is telling given he has supposedly owned Land Rovers, etc.
*The only issue with putting loads of controls on the steering wheel that I’ve really found stupid, especially with Ferraris, is everything they put in there you’d never use on the race track anyway. If you’re seriously tracking this car, you’d barely use volume, change tracks, indicators, even lights. Just seems like a gimmick that may be utilised in very niche situations. There’s nothing for the rest of the dash to do*
@@bunsenn5064 He never said he didn't want buttons. He just doesn't want excessive buttons on the steering wheel. All the steering wheel needs is controls for the drive mode, cruise control, the screen page, and volume up/down and phone answer/hangup. There's no reason to have the turn signals and headlights and wipers actually on the wheel. There's nothing wrong with having them on a stick behind the wheel.
The buttons aren’t hurting you brother. It’s a starter Ferrari model. If you’re gonna flip about buttons on the wheel you’re surely in the market for something much more serious than a 296.
Carroll Shelby once side his dream car would be an automatic. Some 911 automatics are faster than their manual counterparts. Maybe it's time to rethink our ideal driving experiences.
296GTB is starting to grow on me, but I still hate screens and “capacitive touch”. Make physical buttons and analog gauges optional and it will sell at least once.
Good review but I’m skeptical of a $400k+ (w options) hybrid V6 Ferrari. Time will tell if it sells like hotcakes or not, but I definitely find it not so attractive, including the design mixing vintage curves and ultra modern features.
These types of cars tend to sell more in the sunbelt. Imagine years of leaving them or just driving them outside in the intense sunshine. These screens will be melted or at minimum the electronics that operate these things. Expect to pay up $15,000 for a new screen when they inevitably go. Parts for Ferrari and Maserati are double what Mercedes parts costs. Trust me I know. I’d avoid one of these used. These interior’s will only be good for 4 to 5 years like plastic Fantastic BMW’s.
I was at the Ferrari dealership when I serviced my Ferrari. Got to talking about the most big ticket items the service advisor told me some guy just paid $250,000 for a battery for his LaFerrari. 😂 How much will the electric 165 hp battery car cost from this 296 when it dies ? 😂 $$$$$$$$$ 🤣
I don't like the sound. I don't like the rear. I don't like it's a hybrid. It should have been a MHEV paired with a V8. With a better looking rear end and AMAZING sound as usual. THAT would make it PERFECT! SAD!
Performance sounds like McLarens of the mid 2010s. The only exciting hybrid that Ferrari has ever done was the LaFerrari. The 458 Speciale was the pinnacle of mid engine "entry level" Ferraris, this is not that. Also, I don't know how the hybrid system will hold up. A 20 year old 360 is still quite serviceable, and will be for decades into the future. Even a highly computerized 488 or F8 can presumably last a long time if its stored properly (assuming the adhesives last and don't fail under heat as they age and chemically degrade). However, these hybrid systems probably wont last. I don't know how much a new battery costs, but in 15 years what will the value proposition be for replacing it? I.e. $100K for a battery on a car worth $150K at best (based on current F430 prices), and the one needing the battery replacement won't be worth close to that. I think these will end up being converted to gas only cars and the ones with the hybrid system still functioning will be a rare sight to see. And I only say that because it's still a Ferrari, and therefore probably too valuable to scrap. My point is, is this really something worth $350K +? Why?
For retrospective a Lexus ISF will do zero to 60 approximately 4.5 seconds, has a top speed of 180, makes 416 or so horsepower and costing your something in the high 20s to the low 40s vs 800 hp I mean I’m sure once the Ferrari hooks up it bolts for 300 grand man I don’t know.
It’s not a real Ferrari, it’s a corporate car for people who do not understand the brand, the history and DNA. A V6 will never be recognized as a good Ferrari, the Dino got value, we still don’t understand why! This car will be remembered like the 355 and the 360 as a bad car! 100% sure.
Just for the sakes of it #Doug the denomiantion is a Ferrari classic: GTB = Gran Turismo Berlinetta (berlinetta means roughly "small coach" and is such) GTS = Gran Turismo Spider (spider is the word we Italian use for convertibles and is such, I know it's weird but that is)
I have to agree on the looks, this car is gorgeous! As much as I hate computer screens in a car, they seem have done this one in a way that doesn't look sus.
I would argue that the Ferrari Roma is the best looking. You lost me at "Plug-in hybrid"; two very complex technologies....what could possibly go wrong? Right?
Imagine if Ferrari made a V10 that has the exhaust note of a Ferrari V10 F1 car due to a 9300+ rpm redline and 5 into one exhaust headers. Hybrid or not, it will be totally bonkers and there will be a backlog of orders as big as the Purosangue if not bigger.
Surprised to not see more people mentioning all the creaking sounds in the interior during the driving portion… not sure what that was but it was definitely prominent.
Imagine having touch sensitive buttons (called "screens" by Doug) in a serious "track-focused" sports car. Nothing better than having to look down to your buttons to know where they are, because you are not able to feel them like traditional buttons. Well played Ferrari...
Drove one today with the carbon fiber wheels and the carbon bucket seats and wow those seats are some of the most uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in! The ones in this look much better
I’ve sat in a corvette C7 as well as the C8 corvette and the seats are the comfiest seats I ever sat on. I find seats that feel like sitting on silicone rubber meaning it is not too hard but is still very firm tend to be the comfiest for me. I do not know if they are other supercars that have that goldilocks level of seat firmness just like the C7 and C8 Corvette.

My all-time favorite car. I've actually driven one earlier this year- for context at the time I was 18 and finishing high school. I still have to pinch myself. I will never forget that day nor the generosity of the owner. edit: for those interested, explanation of how I got to drive a 296 GTB in these replies :)
@@rani5752 Crazy story! i had seen the exact car I would get to drive in the wild one day early this year. It had shown up in some local car meets too, however I had missed all of them. about a month later, I go to my local Ferrari dealer's car meet, and after seeing one 296 for the first time ever, I recognize someone from my school. In the most unbelievable turn of events, their dad was the owner of that 296 that I saw before, and after meeting him they invited me over to their house after the car show. They were very nonchalant about it and kind, but inside I was freaking out. So I went over to their home, and in the back garage he has this ferrari batcave including a portofino M, a gorgeous Roma in a unique blue, a mini 250 TR from the little car company, his Rosso Taormina cavalcade SF90 spider which i had also gotten the chance to sit in, and the 296 GTB which I had been chasing since the start of the year. It's a very beautiful car, Verde Pino with an argento nurburgring stripe from the assetto fiorano package. Carbon wheels, aluminum brake calipers, painted shields. I have a copy of the window sticker that he kindly gave me. After pulling it out of the driveway, he offered that I get in and drive it myself. I was stunned but I kept my composure, and I learned what it was like to have my dream fulfilled. again I want to reiterate that this is a 1-in-a-million chance, and that I'm incredibly grateful. some notes about the 296 driving experience: 1. It's FAST. 830HP is no joke. 2. It's light, and fun to drive. He was coaching me to trust the car as I was turning around a bend, and the car responded beautifully. There's something to be said when a car is fun to drive at any speed. 3. The V6 is the best news. produces a ridiculously beautiful note, and the turbo whooshes are a bonus. While I had my fun I still stayed within my limits, given that this was an 800HP RWD 3,200lb supercar and I have minimal experience. After that we switched seats and he was able to show me a little bit more of what it was capable of. Unbelievable experience, amongst the top moments of my life. instagram.com/p/CrYlFv6OXuC/ Here's an image of it at a local car show

Next C9 Corvette is going to look like this Ferrari. Maybe that "gated" gear selector is a hint for next model? Other EV owners are going to be annoyed, seeing Ferrari parked in "their" EV charging spot.
The 296 GTB is a work of art in every way possible. I love the retro styling cues as a tribute to the Ferrari 250 LM race car from the 1960s. Fantastic, breathtaking car.
I don't know ow what to make of it . Its a good looking car but somehow not a ferrari . Its their first v6 since the Dino so why take styling cues from a v12 race.car ? Why not.from the Dino?? If this had an alfa badge and was sold as a bigger stablemate to alfa 4c I think it would be perfect
This has to be a prank Doug. V6 hybrid, boring design and stupid infotainment, even the startengine button is a display, also the maintenance of this car is going to be a nightmare and and not one point where you criticise the car for its obvious. This car has no soul or character. it killed the icon of the midengine Ferrari and a lot of horses won’t make up for it. Your exicited reaction when you drove it seemed kinda fake too. Maybe Doug wants a new Ferrari otherwise I cant explain this whole review.
Another EV motor that no one wants in a sports car lol. My question is, if all vehicles end up being EV’s, what will be the difference between a Ford and a Ferrari? The color of the batteries?? 😅
The interface to this car is not going to age well. Otherwise a great car. It would be interesting if an analog cockpit was offered as a high priced option, how many would pick that option over this.
The whole exterior is so clean. The true definition of sculptural fluidity. The gated shifter design is a nice touch also. Only downside is that I'll never own one.
Ferrari really needs to get Audi to develop their UI on their screens. Ferrari UI looks like it's from the early 2000s with all the gradients, obstructive textures, and messy organization
The car is phenomenal, but that capacitive button for the ignition is horrific. Should be a physical key or a push button at least. The Huracan at least had that flip up fighter jet style button for ignition, and that was sick
I find those very firm seats that have just a little bit of give like the C7 and C8 corvettes instead of none at all like the Lamborghini Gallardo or even soft seats like the Nissan 350Z to be the most comfortable seats in a car in my opinion especially with bolsters that are neither too tight nor too loose.
Just a gorgeous car and sure looks amazing to drive just based on your reactions. Damn good power numbers out of that hybrid setup. Looks like you could get into some serious trouble with that one lol
Sorry SF90 has odd proportion and overgrown. 296GTB look soo much more sleek and coherent design. SF90 was intentionally not meant to be aesthetic design focused.

Me too. But my favorite, no related to the steering wheel, is the "buttons fall" of the corvette C8
I think Ferrari's inspiration for their wheel is that the wheel of an F1 car has all the controls on it.
100%. Too much going on with the Ferrari wheels. BMW, Porsche, VW/Audi make the best wheels in my opinion.
It's so that you don't have to take your hands off the wheels to do anything while driving, just like F1 cars, it's a nod to their racing pedigree and the prioritisation of the driving experience.
I was amazed about the 180K replacement battery pack to do every 3/5 years to keep it perfect.

Some ww2 piston engine planes had over 2000hp. It's only a matter of cost

The 296 is my favorite Ferrari since the La Ferrari and 458 era, it is a work of art, the best way to make a Hybrid, by using the benefits that downsizing gives you!
Its only downside is all of the touch buttons, but other than that? This is A MASTERPIECE. ❤️❤️
Also, ever notice how we say "The 458 level is the entry level Mid-Engine Sports Car for Ferrari" as if they released more? Like, now the have the SF90 but before it was either 458 or the ultra special edition LaFerrari if you wanted a mid engine Ferrari 🤔
I disagree
Hot take, I think the ferrari 296 is the best “mid level” Ferrari to cone out after the 458. The 488 just felt like a lesser version of the 458, and idk what the hell the F8 was supposed to be. The 296 being a V6 sounding like a V12? This thing is a RIOT
The Ferrari 458 Italia looks much more "evolved" than this car though.
Why?

It’s not a real Ferrari, it’s a corporate car for people who do not understand the brand, the history and DNA. A V6 will never be recognized as a good Ferrari, the Dino got value, we still don’t understand why! This car will be remembered like the 355 and the 360 as a bad car! 100% sure.

I would argue that the Ferrari Roma is the best looking. You lost me at "Plug-in hybrid"; two very complex technologies....what could possibly go wrong? Right?
The sounds it made during the drive reminded me of when I drive a 2nd gen NSX. I was very unhappy with the sound. I said no way and kept the R8.
I was stunned but I kept my composure, and I learned what it was like to have my dream fulfilled. again I want to reiterate that this is a 1-in-a-million chance, and that I'm incredibly grateful.
some notes about the 296 driving experience:

Ferrari killed it on this one, such a good looking, awesome car. That v6 sounds amazing too.
I must be the only one who really doesn't like how this car looks. The 458 was gorgeous IMO, don't find the lines flow well with the 296.
The whole exterior is so clean. The true definition of sculptural fluidity. The gated shifter design is a nice touch also. Only downside is that I'll never own one.

I can’t agree with you on the styling this time. The only two things I don’t like, is the price and how it looks.

I like the red start stop button on the steering wheel in Ferraris that predate the capacitive touch controls.
There's no way the Pista is more comfortable than the 296 GTB, unless it is based on cabin size.
Correct. The Pista does have a larger cabin. But even with the AF pack, the 296 is much more comfortable.

It is a beautiful car, with that said, it kinda resembles the new Lotus Emira.
Car looks and sounds great but I'd rather have It without the hybrid system, 650hp sounds more than enough plus It'd save some weight. Also the touch screen buttons on the steering wheel are a no go.
A 5.0 NA Flatplane crank V8 that revs up to 9000 rpms hypothetically an F508 Italia would be awesome
Sorry, but if I'm buying a new Ferrari I want it to be a V8 or 12. Turbos or hybrid, yeah I guess you have to have them, but a V6 is for Nissans.
