    While chapter 1-7 set up the idea of being completely yourself including the bad, chapter 8 has you returning but this time Madeline is looking at where they truly started, depressed, empty, hollow just like the core.
    I know from experience once you've climbed that mountain and look back you'll see how deep your originally were.

    So the core is about self reflection, that's the reason there isn't much dialogue, switching between fire and ice is about keeping balance in Madeline's mind, using only fire or ice won't get you to the end, but when you use both as when Madline and Badeline cooperate in the summit you can do anything.
    Also the final room matches her description of depression earlier in the game.
    >I'm at the bottom of the ocean.
    >I can't see anything in any direction.
    >It's claustrophobic, yet I feel exposed.
    >I don't know.
    >I'm just floating in this abyss, swimming in a random direction.
    >Hoping that I find something.
    Appart from that, in gameplay the core is just a hard level and a gate to harder levels just for the more exprienced players and completionist, as originally the idea for fareweel was to only be unlocked after completing all c-sides as it was meant to only be a pack of difficult rooms before Maddy figured out a story for the chapter and added more rooms (that's why in the game files Farewell is referred as LostLevels).

    - i loved 8A despite the lack of story but hated 8B with a passion. 1:51:00 apology accepted
    - doing each B-side right after the A-side is interesting but i see the game logic you used. i went back after the a-sides to do all the b-sides and the difficulty progression felt a lot more natural
    - if you feel like it, replay 1A. you can really just feel how much you've improved
    - there are mods for pc that have maps that range from easier than 1A to difficult beyond comprehension. but only if you're interested

    Celeste has maintained its position as my favorite game of all time, in front of TUNIC (which is itself an INCREDIBLE experience by the way, and I would hate to spoil it for anyone).
    Ever since I beat every C-Side and got to experience the pain and suffering that is Farewell, the game, and it's overall message, stayed with me.
    That message after you beat the prologue stuck with me especially.
    "You can do this."
    And.. I did it. I feel like Celeste to me is the embodiment of that message as a whole. You CAN do this. It may take weeks, and several thousand deaths, but you CAN do this. Like a lot of things, like projects you have planned, or even mental health, it may take a lot of time, a lot of commitment, and you may feel like it won't pay off, but eventually, it will. You can't give up, you have to keep going.
    Celeste is an 11/10, and, for once, that is the only thing I truly believe deserves an honest and true 11/10.

I found out about this game through Therm about 2 years ago and have been on my own Celeste journey ever since, and holy smokes is it fun watch someone (especially Seanie) experiencing it for the first time. I had never ever played a platformer before, so my first time playing I had almost every assist on and still had over a hundred deaths. These days I have 18/26 golden strawberries and am in the advanced lobby of Strawberry Jam, Celeste's biggest mod. Seeing videos like these make me remember just how far I've come- past the horrors of 4B and comb room. This game is NOT easy, outstanding job for getting 100% Seanie!! Outstanding job to everyone who's ever even opened the game, because that means you tried, and that's what matters.

      @@Alex_192. HRT is Hormone Replacement Therapy, which is used by many (but not all) transgender people to help treat gender dysphoria. Maddy Thorson (the lead of this game) is a trans woman and this game was very important to her realizing that. To quote from her blog post *Is Madeline Canonically Trans?*, "During Celeste’s development, I did not know that Madeline or myself were trans. During the Farewell DLC’s development, I began to form a hunch. Post-development, I now know that we both are."
      Her full blog post is excellent and I recommend reading it!
      Celeste as a game has struck a chord with all gamers due to being incredible, but it has struck an extra chord with transgender gamers as a major piece of representation, and you can find people all over the internet sharing their stories of how this game helped them come to terms with who they are (whether from a gender perspective or some other).
      EDIT: worth noting that HRT is not solely used by transgender people, and is used by all sorts of people whose bodies no longer produce certain hormones in the necessary/desired quantity. Commonly this is people with menopause, men who take supplemental testosterone (as opposed to testosterone [boosting] supplements), etc.

    1:41:50 I think the best way of describing how difficult wall bouncing is it to describe it button by button.
    1. Move your joystick from strait up into a sort of up-left diagonal direction to move closer to the wall
    2. Move the joystick to strait up
    3. Dash upwards
    4. Press "A" to perform the bounce
    5. Move the joystick from strait up to the direction you would like to go
    All of this, in about 1/2 of a second.
    List of everything that can go wrong:
    1. When adjusting your angle for a precise dash upwards, it is very common to dash diagonally instead, especially if you are dropping underneath the block instead of just jumping up from solid ground
    2. It is also very common to hit your head underneath whatever you are attempting to wall bounce off of
    3. When attempting to move towards the block, you may cling to the block, even if you aren't holding the grab button
    4. You are not fast or precise enough with adjusting your joystick failing to bounce and instead falling to your death
    5. If you successfully pull off a wall bounce, it is very common to still not gain enough height to make whatever jump you need to do. This is because sometimes the game wants to wait about 10 frames before pressing "A" so that you're bounce starts higher up the wall
    6. Even still, you may not gain enough jump height if you aren't holding the "A" button rather than just pressing it. A similar phenomenon gave me hell with the pufferfish, as I didn't realize you could hold the jump button after hitting one to gain additional jump height.
    The game expects you to have all of this information down over the course of 3 rooms, where all of this information is REQUIRED to successfully wall-bounce off of two 1 tile blocks, which is a room that wants complete mastery over the mechanic, which from then on the game seems to just expect you to have fully incorporated into your movement as a default ability into the 9th chapter.

    I really hope no one is turned away from playing Celeste after watching this video from thinking it's too difficult or whatever. Yes, it is a challenging game that could be accurately described as a precision platformer, but it is by no means pixel or frame perfect ever. Seanie heavily exaggerates in the intro when he says that. Timings for most inputs are actually quite generous (letting you jump for a few frames after leaving the ground or change dash direction for a few frames after the initial input, for example). It really just takes practice to get comfortable with the controls and build muscle memory. Once you do, the movement really just flows. The movement and level design are both phenomenally well designed in my opinion. It may be difficult, but it is well designed difficulty.
    The difficulty curve is also a lot better that in appears if you just start with the A sides and leave the B sides for later. Chapter 3 is a bit of a difficulty spike, but otherwise the difficulty curve is really quite reasonable. After 7A, only do the higher difficulty chapters if you genuinely want to. If you don't there's really no shame in stopping at the summit.

    At 2:40:20 the reason why madaline drops the jelly is because you hold down on the controller while being on the ground. Its used to allow you to let go of a jelly without giving it any horizontal movement, for instance if you need to use upwind to hit a switch you could position yourself below the switch and hold down to let it float up to it. • @Random_Name-lf5hw
    @Random_Name-lf5hw 11 днів тому +35

    Congrats on the 100% Celeste! As an experienced Celeste player, I can clarify a few things that you get confused by:
    At 2:01:00, you refilled your dash on one of the moving dash blocks. When a hazard moves (like spikes on moving platforms or dust bunnies from chapter 3), their hitbox lags behind by a frame, which can occasionally expose the corner of the block and let you stand there for a single frame. By walking off the corner on the very next frame, the game never realizes you should have died. This is due to the order the game calculates things each frame: Madeline moves, then the game checks if you hit hazards, then the hazards move. The same can occur in wind.
    You said that you cannot do a wallbounce while holding dash. This is false, but maybe your controller wasn't reading the jump input when the dash and climb buttons were pressed. This is more often an issue on keyboard, but can happen on controller. Also, you can wallbounce while grabbing, the jump timing is just more precise, which is why it's recommended to not grab.
    At 2:39:50, you said that a "weird glitch" made you drop the jellyfish. It's not a glitch, just a normal game mechanic you hadn't noticed: when you press down on solid ground, you crouch, and you cannot hold objects while crouched. Thus, when you held down to descend in the wind, you ended up landing on the ground while holding down, and therefore crouched, and therefore dropped the jellyfish. 100% intended mechanic, just one that isn't explained outright.
    Also, extended hypers and wavedashes are the same thing, the game just explains wavedashes somewhat poorly. Getting a proper wavedash is based on the amount of time between your dash and jump, just like an extended hyper. However, the game tries to make it more intuitive by telling you to buffer your jump, thus making it dependent on the height where you start the dash. If you do a wavedash but jump at the same time as you would with an extended hyper, you'll get the jump you want, even if you hit the ground at a weird time.

  • @ceebailz
    @ceebailz 10 днів тому +53

    imo using extended hypers on farewell is totally understandable and i can only assume exok wasnt aware of them during development bc theyre a much easier mid point than wave dashes.
    the wall bounce thing though; literal skill issue, theyre so satisfying and fun to pull off, L plus ratio plus no golden strawberries 💯🔥

    • @JaggerG
      @JaggerG 8 днів тому +3

      IMO the aerial dash is a good visual cue to get it if you have good reflexes, but it's basically just a method to use a buffered jump to ensure the timing. Once I realized each block in that triple falling block room is effectively lined up so that the perfect height is pretty much your max height after each jump and some extra pixels of forgiveness, they got really easy to chain any time chaining's designed to be required.
      But it does hinge on figuring that out and having the reaction skill. I can totally see a fresh player have a much easier time just doing extended hypers or reverse hypers, as they don't have to go through labbing things out and developing an eye for it.

    • @autumn4442
      @autumn4442 7 днів тому +4

      exok was 100% aware of extended hyper dashes during development. I think the reason why they were never explained is because wavedashes are more versatile; extended hyper dashes require quite a bit more ground space, which creates extra limitations on the game design element.
      The reason they don't just teach both is because explaining two similar-but-different techniques to the player could be overwhelming.

    • @Sweetaru1
      @Sweetaru1 7 днів тому +3

      The true reason they teach you wave dashing instead of extended hypers is because, funny enough, wave dashing makes it easier for you to get your dash back (there's a 2x bigger window for you to jump and get the momentum + dash). Plus most of the levels were designed with wave dashing in mind.
      Now I can't back up this info, but I do remember hearing about it somewhere. Apparently, wave dashing was hard-coded into the game, while hypers and ultras were a byproduct of that code. So, in a scale, wave dashing is the most realible code-wise, then comes hypers, then ultras, which are basically pixel-perfect to execute, and even then have a chance to fail.
      Also yes they knew about hypers even before the speedrunning comunity started using them, they even teach you them at the end of 8C

    • @cerulity32k

    1:41:30 It's actually a very easy mechanic.
    All it matters for wall jumps is that you jump WHILE you're dashing (up).
    You have the space of the dash to jump but once the dash is finished you can't wall jump.
    2:01 there is one pixel of "ground" next to the spike that you slipped on restoring your dash.

    Celeste is one of my favorite games of all time. It’s the only game so far that has truly connected with me. I’m glad you got to experience this game.
    Talent alone cannot get you through this game. As someone who most people would consider talented at videogames, that just wast enough for me to get through this. It takes something much greater than that. It take determination and force of will. The ability to keep going and pick yourself back up. Because no matter how bad you start off being, you can become amazing at something if you just put in the time and effort to truly get better.
    This game is the first game I have encountered that truly challenged me, it’s also the first to hook me into its story, I’ve never been very interested in the stories of the videogames I’m playing, but think game truly clicked with me.
