yeah quite a bit of folks asked for this one. Lexus says its self adjusting. Your drum brakes extract further and further whenever u step on the Ebrakes.
There’s another way to do this without removing the brakes and rotors. Just stick a screwdriver into one of the access holes on the face of the rotor and jam it up or down to spin the gear that linked the parking brake shoes shown in the video. The only thing is to line up the access hole to this gear by turning the rotor.
That only works on the first generation. The later generation is self adjusting. The dealer and my local mechanic recommended not messing with it. I did it manually to my 2008. But you're right.
@@GXBOB what do you mean? It only works on the first generation? What years is that? I have a 2014 and I adjust it using the hole in the rotor but it definitely sucks and is very hard to do
Hey Bob, just wanted to add my experience. On our 2015 GX460 with 120k, adjusting with the star wheel at the brakes wasn't enough to get the brakes holding as tight as they should. Truck still rolled slowly on an inclined driveway. I had to go under the dash and take up slack on the cable by tightening the 10mm adjuster nut that's at the cable-end on the parking brake pedal assembly. Pretty easy using a 10mm deep socket. Give it a few clockwise turns, check if the brake holds on a hill and repeat if necessary. And now my pedal doesn't have to be pushed to the floor to engage the e-brake. I guess these cables do stretch a bit as the miles rack up... especially if you're using the brake everytime you park (as you should!).
Thank you i appreciate the input. I might even do a vid on it if the camera angle allows me to. By the way, i looked at your page and the skateboarding clip of your (i think) wife. I skated for a very long time during the late 80's when Tony Hawk was a baby. My board was a Powell Peralta Steve Caballero before switching over to Vision Mark Gonzalez. I was watching your wife do that 360 spin and it took me back. Gnarly times to be a kid. Kids nowadays don't know what real fun is.
@@GXBOB Hey Bob, that is my mom! She is 62 now but can still pull a clean 360. Dude, like every video you post is something I need to do. This has been bothering me ever since I got my GX. The parking brake will barely hold the vehicle at idle. Seems like a simple enough adjustment to make. Thanks!
Whatever you do, do not over tighten. If you do, you will not be able to get your rotors off to readjust. Make sure you tighten the spindle one click at a time. Not 3.
Bob - LOVE your videos and dont want be against you like your exWife =) But for adjustment parking brakes you dont need take apart all brake system =) On that drum u got 5 holes next to the lug nuts holes for adjustment that spindle =) Just align one of them with spindle and use a flat screwdriver thru that hole for spin that spindle up or down till u will satisfied with your pedal and tension on brake - drum movement =) Keep making your videos - im get a lot of information from them ! Hey Kolia, your suggestion works great if the holes were aligned with the adjustment screw to begin with. Mine was not even visible as the holes were displaced. I think if i were to redo the video, i would definitely add your inputs, Thanks Kolia!
@@GXBOB you can easy rotate a drum to align a hole if put tranny in neutral and release a p- brake =) Just align one hole on 6 o clock and stick a screwdriver in it - You cant miss that spinner i did it on my 2020 - it was loose from a factory =(

Update! All the GX460 park brake adjustments done a the shoes on't help. It's the front half Park Brake cable that splits into the equalizer the the R and L cable come from. the main first cable stretches like a rubber band. I can't find anywhere on line the process to replace it. A 700.00 bill gets it replaced at Lexus and your pedal will be at the top. Never try to over tighten as the cable will stretch or collapse the housing. No matter how many clicks you tighten it, it won't hold if cable is stretched.
Hey Bob, great video as always. one question, why you want it to create drag when ebrake is released. wouldn't it wear down brakes plus create drag? logically ebrake should not be touching rotor when released am I wrong?
If you take a look at the gap in your front brake pads, you’ll notice there aren’t any. Same thing with the rear. We are not clamping down with force. We are just slightly having the surfaces meet so there is no unnecessary play in your emergency brake pedal

Thank you for your videos Bob. I had all my break pads and roters replaced and i felt the e-brake more loose than normal. The mechanic told me to use the car for a few days and that they should re-adjust themselves. What do you think about it?
He is correct. They are self-adjusting. But, the self adjustment is at a minimum. Your E-brake pedal will still go all the way down to the floor. If you adjust them yourself, then at least you can gauge how much travel you want on your E-brake pedal. Mine right now are very ideal since my pedal do not go anywhere near the floor. Also....if you want to accelerate the process instead of driving it around to self adjust itself, you can manually do it since you already have the wheels off your car.....
Great video. Thanks. But. on my 2014 GX 460 only the pasenger side rear parking brake seems to be adjustable. The drivers side rear parking brake has the same structure, but the adjusting bolt doesn’t turn. It will not expand and contract like the passenger rear. It is a different adjustment bolt. Do you know if the driver rear is self adjusting? Thanks.
Yes they are self adjusting, so they say. Lexus and my local mechanic says to not touch it but i did anyways. Don’t regret it because seeing it manually lets me raise the E brakes much higher when set.
You gotta make once click at a time. Check. Then continue. You can look thru one of the slots on the face of the rotor and you'll be able to access the gear mechanism. From that just use a flat head screwdriver and loosen/tighten the gear.
@@anonymouse955Yea we all know there’s an access hole at 6 o clock. You don’t adjust the E brakes without ensuring all your hardware and brake shoes are not worn causing the long pedal travel. It’s good to have an overview of your E brakes and it’s wear condition and plus removing the rotors provide better camera angles for the viewers and to show them what the spindle gear looks like. Happy Thanksgiving.
