Both this and Return of the Jedi for Game Gear were actually a hell of a lot better then they had a right to be, especially considering the limitations of the handheld. What's even more crazy? The Game Gear version of it was developed by Tiertex (while Jedi was developed by Realtime Associates), and Tiertex were NOTORIOUSLY known for absolutely HORRIBLE ports.
I played this as a little kid and I remember the graphics being SO COOL and now I'm used to 3ds graphics for portable consoles and this doesn't look as spiffy as I remember it being. Still, super cool to see this and relive some old memories. Thank you.
I remember playing this game 20 years ago on the Master system, now I can say there was quite a lot of differences at the beginning: you don't have the intro with Leila, you start on the overworld with a lot a caves to explore, so you have to find R2D2 and Obiwan yourself, but after the game stays pretty much the same. It's really hard when you play it the first time, and the last level has some false routes leading to cheap deaths.
Unlike the NES and Game Boy versions, this one contains more levels and soundtracks. The Master System version however, also developed by Tiertex, does not contain the content from the Game Gear version. It is the same levels as the NES version.
Always thought this game was the same as SMS version, but it has different levels and sections, which were probably cut in the SMS version... Nice, now i'll need to play it. SMS Star Wars is one of my favourite games ever
pedroalmeida9009 please fill me in...?i still cant figure it out. Im stuck at the beginning forever because i cant jump that spot!!! I restored a game gear because i always wanted one when i was younger. I found thst most of the games have nearly impassable moments....like sonic and star wars.
Man, what a game this was. I loved it. Never beat it as a kid, though. My Jedi skills weren't the best, sadly. Game Gear was ahead of its time. I'm willing to bet that there's more people with working Game Gear's than there are PS Vitas lol
Removes the landspeeder exploration element for a completely linear experience, places a Princess Leia Death Star star stage at the beginning of the game, and adds a few desert platforming stages for Luke, but otherwise looks like a fairly faithful port of the NES/Game Boy version.
NES Star Wars games looked and/or sounded dreadful (terrible) i thought it was odd (strange) that a version of Empire Strikes Back was made for the NES but not the Sega Game Gear and/or Sega Master System
I remember this game, sorta. Of course I only borrowed it and didn't get very far. And that was way back in my childhood years. Seams like a very decent game to the actual movie.
I ve finished this game at least 50 times as a kid. Used to play it all the time and I was getting so good I could finish it without ever taking damage. Then I tried replaying a year ago and man have I gotten rusty. I barely managed to get to the lightsaber and then I couldnt get further. How did this happen?
Having played (and suffered very much through) the Game Boy release, I have to say... this is LEAGUES better. I'm currently getting into Game Gear collecting and in addition to most of the Sonic games, this is one I'm definitely going to buy.
This game is pure shit. Bad level design, bad controls, cheap deaths, and even the graphics aren't good for a 1995 game. The only good thing is the music :D

well tbf they also made Paperboy on the Master System. seems as though they mostly sucked on home computers.
And somehow they came out with arguably the best version of JVC Star Wars there is.

Remember in A New Hope when Luke's running through the desert slaughtering Jawa's. Great scene.
And not just the men, but the women and the children, too!
"He has too much of his father in him."
The Star Wars theme sounds great on 8-bit Sega consoles.
I got this for xmas in like 1991 when I was 9. Got it with my game gear. Thought this game was absolutely amazing.

23:55 this was the part I could never get past, looking back on it now I had non idea why when it was so easy
I remember playing this as a little kid and thinking that the fact that the band was playing in the cantina was the coolest thing I had ever seen
Forget Han and Greedo. Luke shot first!
I just got this Game Gear game yesterday at a convention. It brings back memories. I was able to get further than I thought I could
10:58 From this point on, the game is almost exactly the same as the NES/SMS "Star Wars" game.
It's essentially the NES game with the free roaming replaced by platforming.
Unlike the NES and Game Boy versions, this one contains more levels and soundtracks. The Master System version however, also developed by Tiertex, does not contain the content from the Game Gear version. It is the same levels as the NES version.
Maybe the GG came later and they continued the development since a GG is basically a portable MS with minor differences.
Ok...
26:09 I count about 66 TIE Fighters in the level where you escape from the Death Star.

You could sprint jump?!?! I didn't know that as a kid!! You know how long it took to finally do that fucking jump at leia's level??!
+ZWarrior006 looooool.... welcome

What a beautiful looking/impressive game.

Great version of a great game!
Best Star Wars game (SMS NES GG) with the Super Star Wars Trilogy
NES Star Wars games looked and/or sounded dreadful (terrible)

4:28 what a banger of a song 🔥
Interesting you don’t use the lightsaber the rest of the game once you get it. I always did that
6:25 is that a tall jawa carrying a gaffi stick? Aren't sandpeople suppose to carry those?
I remember this game, sorta. Of course I only borrowed it and didn't get very far. And that was way back in my childhood years. Seams like a very decent game to the actual movie.
Compared to the NES version this one's actually playable. Also has some exclusive content.
man Obi-Wan had to go through some shit to get home on Tatooine, didn't he?
LOL thanks to this video, I finally figured out how to get Han Solo. This plagued me for decades. It sucks that he's actually a missable character.

i played the game at leat 50 times as a kid but i finished it just once !
Almost the same ahahah

Why are you shooting jawas and not tuscan raiders, it makes no sense
She looks like marry poppy be flying up those stairs
This was my game
Something wrong with the main music.
What's wrong?
They butchered the music
No, they didn't.
Can't understand why there are others music themes than the originals star wars. It ruins the game
Star Wars !!!!
It's not as bad a game as I remembered, but some parts would definitely have some fans screaming bloody murder.
L' immagine finale...una MERDA!
This game is pure shit. Bad level design, bad controls, cheap deaths, and even the graphics aren't good for a 1995 game. The only good thing is the music :D
That's absolutely ridiculous that you brought up the graphics. It's a beautiful looking game.
Or maybe the game is pretty decent and you are just a bad player
This (and the Master System version) might be the best game Tiertex ever made.
