My first "grown up" car was a '61 Olds Super 88 convertible - 394 C.I. and 325 HP. The only flaw in the car was the Acel-a-Rotor Hydramatic, which sounded like a toilet flushing on the 1-2 gear change. GM should have stuck with the bullet proof four speed Hydramatic - which was good enough for Rolls-Royce.
lol, thanks for the clarification.....I didn't realize it was a bad transmission....I'm not surprised with this advertising....and not to pick on Oldsmobile, I've been driving today my 66 Oldsmobile Toronado today.....I love the car.....
Your '66 Toronado has the newer Olds Rocket V8 and the legendary TH425 transmission that is actually the TH400 converted to front drive. My brother had one years ago - in the typical gold with black interior. That car could do everything - except stop from 50+mph more than once. Brake fade on those cars is rated by the AMA as the most effective cardiac stress test ever devised! Thanks for sharing the ad - the '61 Olds commercials are sparse and Olds fans always love to see them again.
Glossary - "Skyrocket" = The Olds 394 V8 - same one they had the year before. "Accel-A-Rotor" = A primitive stator in the fluid coupling of the dreaded Slim-Jim transmission that does what a stator in a torque converter does, but does it poorly. And the "only Olds has it" wasn't exactly true. You could get the same Slim Jim next door at the Pontiac dealer if you bought a Catalina or Ventura with the "Roto Hydramatic". The ad does its job - makes a dreadful trans sound great.
Um excuse me Mr. But I bought one because of this commercial and he was right. This car had ZING, and my ZING was SMOOTH! And ONLY Oldsmobile had it. All the other new cars had no Zing and they sure weren't Smooth. They didn't have Oldsmobile Know How. ;)
extremely strange and something wonky from UA-cam at the moment....this happened the other day on a video of a Dodge Dart, the audio was from a different upload for a Dodge Coronet. When I run it in Edit Mode, it's an Oldsmobile Commercial, when I run it in normal view, it's a Pontiac commercial? Strange, but you can see the comments below all reference Oldsmobile....so something strange going on at UA-cam behind the scene.
With breath freshening Retsyn!
Two, two, two breathmints in one!
Yes, but is the power really "forthright"? I mean, I want a car with Forthright power!
