Sextortion warning: In six hours, my son was dead | BBC News

- A mother whose son killed himself just six hours after being targeted by "sextortionists" is campaigning to raise awareness.
Jordan DeMay died in 2022 after brothers Samuel and Samson Ogoshi targeted him from Lagos, pretending to be an attractive girl his age, and then blackmailed him with explicit images of himself.
Now, his mother, Jenn Buta, is using the TikTok account Jordan set up for her to warn young people about such criminals, largely based in Nigeria - and her videos have more than a million "likes".
Nigerian police have told BBC News any suggestion they are not taking the crimes seriously is "laughable".

Parents need to teach their kids to never send nudes online to anyone. It seems like a pretty important conversation parents should be having before they even think about giving their kid a smartphone... Also that's smartphone should be monitored by them
Don’t ever send nude photos to anyone especially strangers. Especially if you are scared to death if someone sends them around.
You cant stop people from doing it so If you are going to send them, don't send a pic with your face or any identifying marks like tattoos
@@rumblefish9Yup! Great advice and if you ever make the mistake of sending photos or videos, don’t ever show your face, birthmarks, tattoos, or anything that identifies you.

Loneliness is one of the most powerful experiences in human psychology. It is also one of the most misunderstood.

How about banning nude photos. AI is capable of this.
How about developing the mental fortitude to not give a shit. Might sound corny but let me say that we are born into this world naked and when our time passes, we don't take our clothes or hairdos with us. There is nothing to be embarrassed about if somebody has our nude photos or videos. It is not the end of the world, nobody cares, people will move on with their own challenges and any incident (if it ever happens) will be just a story. What truly matters is how we respond to it and gather the strength to become a stronger person and never give in to these fraudsters and never let them dictate our lives. People with enough sense will truly understand our situation and will find inspiration in our resilience.
I thought this problem is limited to India but it seems it's a global problem.
Globally !
India and Nigeria are the most well known countries with scammers. I don't think it's a global thing because other countries aren't as embedded in scams as those two. There's an entire district of Mumbai dedicated to online scams with call-centres in office blocks.

Yep the kids who buy into it take it too seriously. Your parents have seen you naked, there’s no drama. Just tell the punks to fuck off. And so what people in school will see it too, chances are that if you look good that will only play in your favour with the girls. no, parents need to step up and remind their kids to respect themselves
So depressing for the mother.
Isn't it better to campaign against youngsters showing their bare parts to strangers on the internet?
Well that's part of it too. Being aware that once they send something online, they can never get it back. It's all about educating them of the risks and the real dangers so they can better protect themselves, but the ultimate catch-all is knowing that they have support around them should something ever happen. That way, victims don't feel so alone. The sextortion itself is a source of great stress, but the helplessness of feeling alone and unable to tell anyone is why they consider taking their own life.
I was a victim of sextortion when my ex broke up with me. I was scared and decided to close every social media. They just moved on, they don’t have time to send your images to anyone.
I know how you feel, happened to me once too
Happened to me during the covid-19 pandemic when I was feeling lonely and naive. A user in Instagram threatened to release a clip of me to all my Instagram followers. I then quickly blocked that user then went through the list of my followers and removed the profiles which are suspicious to me. Then finally set my profile to private immediately after doing so. That is one lesson I will never forget and will not repeat again. But R.I.P to this boy and condolences to his family.

How can a young adult think that having nudes sent to friends is that bad? What kind of ideas did all of the boys who took their life have about sexuality? I think this report is missing a point not talking about conservative upbringing and taboos around sex. I simply cannot imagine what kind of a family you have to grow up in where you'd rather take your life than tell your parents that you sent nudes and are in trouble. That's not normal
He could have been struggling with other things and this was the straw that broke the camels back.
Actually, it is quite understandable. Especially in teenage years, it is not unusual for youngsters to try and sort the problem themselves, even when they know they need help. Also, given the evil nature of these criminals, it is possible they threatened to harm the families, too. We can't presume to understand all this young man, and others like him, went through or what we would do under the same circumstances. We can only know that these children were viciously preyed upon, harassed, and worn down. It's a terrible, terrible tragedy!
All parents can do is their utmost to raise children who are aware, wise, and able to discern, in advance, the consequence of their actions. You think sending nude pictures to friends is safe? I disagree. Everyone wants and deserves some level of privacy, and when you expose yourself on a phone or video and press 'send', you place that privacy, and possibly your life, in the hands of others and at the whim of their values which, you may find, do not align with yours. Warning children about this, and teaching them to apply caution, wisdom, and integrity in their sexual choices is not conservatism or a taboo; it's good, plain, common sense!

Should parents be taking their child’s phone and reading their messages and their social media checks, to check if they are targeted. It’s a tricky one
If you have kids and want them to be safe, give them a phone that IS NOT a smart phone. Text and voice only. Allow computer use in an area like the kitchen only.
this is depressing...I'm so so sorry this happened to your family, may god comfort your son
Their son sent naked pictures of himself to people. So it's kinda his own doing.
With the ability to generate deep-fakes these days, the victim doesn't even need to have contact with the person, he can take a photo from someone's Facebook, generate the photo and then contact the victim and blackmail them (or worse).
tat is y don't use facebook n others which make oneself public. Use it for 4mths when it first started and notice this thing has a big problem. Completely delete it few years ago.

While l agree about using social media, public figures are vulnerable to this. My friend is on the local public school board and never posts any photos, but people can get her image from group photos and/or public events.
Oh my gosh my heart is broken. I will pray tonight for this mom. Wow. The solution I think also is for kids to have “dumb phones” while being educated about this so that when they get a smart phone on their own they aren’t falling prey. When I counsel young ppl and parents I tell them NEVER communicate with someone online that you don’t know in person. NEVER
This is horrendous. If I were a parent, I’d be teaching my kids to try to be away of these scams but let them know that this happens & I have their back.
Talk to the kids the youth talk to ur children. Let them know what’s out here and the internet deepest condolences
It's not only about talking to the kids. It's about monitoring their device use. No child has 'privacy' on their devices. All parents are ultimately the ones who have to help the child pick up the pieces after a mistake so they must monitor what the kids do on the devices. They must know who kids talk to and the content of chats. No one must be allowed to communicate with children without the parents' consent.
This should grow into some form of counsel and discussion through adulthood too. Kids need sound counsel from experienced people.
bunch of pussies xD
Is that the city 250 miles north of Detroit Michigan where he was from.
This has been happening for a while .
Only thing you can do is educate them to never believe anyone online unless youve met them
Lack of parental supervision and control. When will these parents learn that they have responsibility?
Don’t know why these guys killing themselves, look at these females out here they have no shame why should you
Of course you will compare this to women and try to blame women for it
Why should we have shame over something stealing our nudes ? The fact that you drag women into this rather than the men that did this to him. Sicko
@@msunje9862 actually I’m saying Im women have no self respect so these young men should emulate that rather than hurt themselves
Amanda Todd's case comes to mind. It happened a little more than a decade ago. Please, parents, educate your kids. Let's not have history repeat itself.
Suicide?? Just sad.. did this kid not have father figure in his life??
What does having a father figure do to prevent suicide??
@@JamieJamie2o2 The father figure could tell the kids "no ones cares about your naked picture"
@@badminverse2136 If that's all they can do, then I'm sorry but anybody could fill that spot.
Those desperate people took advantage of a situation at the time which was meant to be very personal, naturally you wouldn't want anyone as a whole involved.
I wonder if the BBC is going to talk about what certain groups from certain religion do to young people in streets
For the people who think sexual exploitation never affects males...
No one said that plus if this was a girl she would be called h0e and called all types of names
He had girlfriend, maybe don't cheat next time
@@mayya4413 That had nothing to do with what happened.
Internet access is a powerful tool, often, parents do not realize its dangers.
God Bless 🙏
There is a huge lawsuits happening in the USA against snap chat, a boy took his life due to sexortion, he was 12.
They were charging him 35 dollars a day. 😢
Nigeria is just full of problems. I dont know how they will ever develop? its just so over crowded and so much corruption. I have spent a lot of time there. Its very chaotic. I prefer it to egypt though.
Horrible.
I'm happy the Nigerian government is waking up.
If your pics get leaked, just say it's AI and it's not you dong. Everything is fake nowadays, so if you tell friends your pics are fake, they'll believe you.
Gang stalking is real. These people attack you anyway they can but you have to stay strong.
Please kids, Don't engage in sexual activities online. They also use a software in Skype to look like what they want show but they're actually men behind the camera.
You wont feel threaten if u know u didn't do or shared anything. Block and restart your phone and computer if u may have clicked to an unknown links.
Don't ever heed to their request to pay it will only prove you fell as an easy prey.
Also, learn to watch how to avoid this situation..
Unemployment does not make a “person” push the another to kill himself. Encouraging and threatening the teen to kill himself is pure evilness .
Desperately sad.
Years ago we were taught "stranger danger" and how not to engage. When did parents coaching their kids to not talk to strangers evolve into "I don't know how my kid thought would be great to send nudes to a stranger"?
Obviously Nigeria!
