MB actually needs a true SL in its range. A light roadster, with a 6 cylinder. The Beemer Z4 can do this, (ok not massively light at 1600kg) but you get the idea.
Not just any 4cyl like in your average Subaru Honda VW Audi or Toyota. And it's in one of their flagship cars. Price makes sense to me if I want a new SL that doesn't need to see the gas station every other day like my 63 does. Shoot.

I think you hit the nail on the head at 27:00 when you describe the SL43 owners you have seen. I don't think the SL 43 buyer and the Base 992 buyer are the same person. You're totally correct that this is an accessible AMG product for the older driver, whom Mercedes courts everywhere through its line up. The Sl43 and Sl55 buyer are likely very different as well. The elephant in the room with this car and with all the new SL's is that horrendous screen plonked on the centre console. MB used to be good at producing a good integrated dashboard. If they want a lesson in how to integrate this type of tech they should check out the Audi Q8. Audi have made a reasonable stab at integrating two screens, one above the other that looks OK if you are into this type of tech in a car. Also, incorporating so many controls in these screens is a real backward step. Plus the 5 minutes it takes every time you get into the car to go through the menu system to turn off all the nanny safety controls and the fact you have to do this every time you start the engine makes it a non starter for me. Cars made today with this tech will be so expensive to repair, and in some cases unable to be repaired in the future due to advancements in chip and computer design. I work in electronics and I am told by digital designers that I should produce a new design every 2 years as the chip companies only make a certain number of devices before the next generation is available, so original parts for these cars will become very difficult to get. Under the current MB strategy you won't be able to use spare parts from another car due to the computer codes needed for changing the most basic of parts, means these types of cars will become uneconomical to repair sometime in the future, probably the second or third owner will experience this.
The elephant in the room is you not being able to afford their new stuff and therefore wanna nitpick. Be honest. Because just a few minutes with that display let's you know mercedes did a good job with it. All the buttons you'd originally see are not on the screen and it works just as well.

@@peterhammer4644that’s bllx. EVs apart, 3 secs is becoming normal for Supercars (£200k to £500k typically) which each typically sell in the dozens or hundreds in the UK. Why you mention hypercars (mid-2s 0-60) in an SL conversation I just don’t know. Most “performance cars” such as BMW M and regular Porsche models are now around the 4 second mark, and that’s only come down from 5 seconds within the last decade ie they only form a tiny minority of cars on the road. The “everyday car” market still seems happy with 0-60 acceleration in the 7 to 11 seconds bracket, so for the entry level SL model that’s meant to be for the less-enthusiastic driver it is still very quick, probably unnecessarily so. Only a small minority of people in the target market of 50-70 yr olds will have ever driven a car with a 0-60 under 6 seconds, so this’ll feel like a rocketship.
Then youre obviously not the targeted client. The clients that car is targeting would probably think I'm an asshole for driving an SL63 that needs to hit the gas station 2-3 times per week.
We’ve owned three SL’s. A 2003 R230 SL350 which we had for eleven years and went all over Europe in, a 2014 R231 SL400 and I currently drive a 2017 SL500. Im sorry but despite what you say I think AMG have ruined the SL. Those rear seats are ridiculous and good for nothing but throwing your coat on. If you’re 6 foot tall you won’t even get your young children in there, our 2003 SL had a flat top to the lockers where you could put two suitcases secured by their own seat belts, (nice design touch) ideal for Continental touring. I thought the whole point of a soft top was to save weight and give more boot space, it seems here they’ve managed neither, 21kg isn’t worth anything in a car this weight, so lose, lose. RIP the fabulous vario roof. As for the massive screen, I realise this panders to the screen obsessed generation who can’t walk down a pavement without staring into one but it does nothing for ergonomics or safety. I’ll take buttons every time, thank you. My recently purchased 4.7 V8 twin turbo from a main dealer has covered just 12,500 miles from new with full dealer history, it cost way less than half the price of this car, I don’t think I’ll be trading it in for an AMG “SL” anytime soon.

There are potential customers for this car, like me. For me, the most important thing is the appearance, driving comfort and interior quality. And performance and acceleration are less important. Moreover, there are countries, e.g. Poland, where cars with an engine capacity larger than 2.0 liters are subject to an additional high tax. This gives an additional great incentive to choose this particular model.
@@peterhammer4644 that's true but as a merc fan I'd take the sl63 over a 911 because of the emotional part of it I'd rather have the v8 which sounds good than a better performing car of the same class

As I’ve said before, buy ANY 63 pre 2020, save a shedload of money, bring a smile back to your face and be happy that you’re not adding to your carbon footprint. Dear oh dear oh dear.
I see it exactly the same way. The SL was always a dynamic car on the outside, but at its core it offered S-Class level. At its core, this car needs a smooth-running 8-cylinder engine without any banging effects (Sl 580). What strikes me is that the car lacks presence on the road - it looks like an SLK and has lost a lot of its visual and tactile value compared to its predecessor. This also applies to the new E-Class. The cars look cheaper than their predecessors.
It's a 4 cyl turbo car. I mean, how much can you expect from its performance and noise? I think what skews the bias is the fact it's and AMG and has an AMG price tag. But a sub 5sec 4cyl 0-100 is still fantastic.
Its aimed squarely at base boxster / cayman, whilst the V8 / GT series aims at 911. Not to mention 2 liter engine class will enjoy better vehicle tax brackets in some asian countries
The base 718 Porsche is $70k. This ridiculous car starts at $112k - basically the same as base Porsche 911 which is $114k. This is competing with the 911 (and losing). The higher level SLs are competing with the higher level 911s (and also losing in my view).

You act like they've ditched the V8s. They haven't. Now let me ask you, what's the problem with them making 4 cyl engines too? @@jackmarston2515 how much do you have to spend now to get a AMG V8 ? I have no problem with the 4 cylinder in the 35/45 models but putting it in a 63 model car is sacrilege. It’s not a bad little car from the looks and test drive of it BUT the price for a 4-Cylinder car is what kills the deal instantly! If you are looking at 4-Cylinder sports type convertibles/Coupes there is quite a bit to choose from especially in the $60-80k range with some being better options imo
It's not. Most cars can't achive that. People like to run their mouth on youtube but then they're own car can barely get to 60 mph period. 😅 As for the host of this channel, he doesn't realize that this car, despite its AMG lettering, is more about gas mileage than speed.
if you're gonna spend over 100k on a sports cabriolet, you might as well go for the 55 or 63.. this car would have a place in the market for some 70-80k as a cruiser. At 100k it's better to just axe it.
This is not meant to be the V8 experience people know AMG for. Nothing about this car should be surprising. They opted for gas mileage over anything else. Only reason this 43 gets the AMG badge is because AMG fully produces the SL now as they do the GTs. So technically there is no more none AMG SL. And that's the purpose of this car. I'd call it an AMG imposter if it didn't have its engine hand-built by one of the umpa lumpa working there.
Just checked Merc UK website. The heck there is no SL63 listed for configurator. Instead there were only 43s and 55s. I mean the 55 is fine, but 43...?
Why did the muscle car trade its mighty V8 for a humble 4-cylinder? Because it wanted to show that it could still "shift" gears in life, even if it meant going from a thunderous roar to a cute little "purrr"formance! 😅
There is still a V8 model. Actually two V8s. The SL55 and SL63 both have a V8. This is just garbage. Nobody orders these as the price difference to a V8 is miniscule.
Everything AMG these days is a veritable insult to their fans of old. This from a First Edition C63 S owner. I have gone to BMW - currently an M3CS - and I am over the moon with that car, At 65, I have a dodgy back but those bucket seats are spectacularly comfortable, once you get in that is!
@@jackmarston2515 to be fair, modern day AMG V8s are pretty efficient by V8 standards. If 4 cylinder is what you want, then buy it. But the problem remains that it’s so expensive for what it is. Maybe wait until you actually hear the car to make that judgment. I doubt mercedes would let an entry level A35 class sound better than the SL43 which is one of their high end models.
I've had the original C63 and the current SL55, among others. The 43 and 55 aren't 'real' AMGs; that's just marketing. The 55 is the prior 550 with a brittle suspension. You know why, oh why--43's will sell because it's a 'cheap' SL, accessible to more buyers. AMG is just a brand name now. You can't forgive the suspension harshness in any of them; it's ridiculously hard to the point of crashing going over expansion joints where I live and developing creaks and rattles in first month; and it has an underlying cheap-feeling brittleness. 911's have a much more subtle suspension. Even M4 and M8 Comp have a better suspension. My local dealership has new 37 SL's in stock. Supply and demand says much.
Oh stop it. The suspension is not that bad and I've owned and SLK55 before and an SL63 now. As for noises inside the car, I have yet to see one car not suffer from that same issue when driven around these pathetic roads. Porsche and BMW are no exception.
Maybe you're right, Jack. Look, I've had about 10 of these cars from MB, AMG and Porsche, and this is the 1st one I've sold back within 3 months. Maybe it has to do with my roads here in the SW U.S., but the 55 was very harsh. I respect you getting the 63 and wish you all the best.
MB clearly wanted to change the type of buyer/owner who originally bought an SL, from an older generation to a younger one. If that was their aim then they have probably succeeded as they will have alienated most of their original SL customer base. An SL for many decades has been about a quality car that looks good with a GT driving feel and chosen by the older generation, not a hard core sports car with a firm ride. I have not seen one SL43 and I live around the stock broker belt. Having said that, I have not seen many new SL55s or 63s either. Maybe that says it all...
Maybe I'm just old, but personally, I think Mercedes lost their plot long ago, and AMG became far too loud, too brutish in my opinion. The original SLs were in-line sixes, V8s didn't come along until the R107, and we didn't get post-merger AMG SLs until late in the R129's life cycle. I really wish there wasn't this overemphasis on performance models. Bring back the proper GT cars - no, not the GT63 AMG. I mean cars like the R107 560 SL, R129 SL 500 and SL 600, the C126 560 SEC, C140 600 SEC, C215 CL 600, C216 CL 600 and C217 S 600.
And? Does it get better gas mileage? That's the key comparison here. How is that lost on pretty much everyone. How am I the smartest person in this comment section?😅
Very very disappointing that Mercedes put a 4 cylinder in the SL! When did a SL have a 4 cylinder last? 190SL from the 1950's? No car with a 4 cylinder is luxury! They are devaluating the SL... An AMG should have a V8!

It should have at least a V6… as it’s sitting, it should be MUCH cheaper! Reliability is a concern too with such a stressed out 4 cyl.
MB actually needs a true SL in its range. A light roadster, with a 6 cylinder. The Beemer Z4 can do this, (ok not massively light at 1600kg) but you get the idea.
4 cyl? Ok Im out
Needs either a straight or a V6
Grownups don't worry about the sound , we want a quiet as possible ride so we can listen to radio 4
I would happily add 21 kg to the car and have a composite solid folding roof.
This is the correct answer. A carbon fiber hard top would’ve made it cool. The soft top takes away any cool this cut down model had.
£100,000 + for a 4cyl? Absolutely not.
Not just any 4cyl like in your average Subaru Honda VW Audi or Toyota. And it's in one of their flagship cars. Price makes sense to me if I want a new SL that doesn't need to see the gas station every other day like my 63 does. Shoot.
The car was probably made for fuel efficiency. Looks like a really nice weekend getaway car. Drive for four to six hours and enjoy the luxury of an AMG. I think that’s a cool car.
As you clearly point out, they seem to be two different products. As a long time Porsche owner, I can't wait till the SL55 arrives in Canada as I will be quickly in line to purchase and SL55.
I have a 2015 sl63 Brabus 900. Ceramics, the whole 9. The best body SL ever
So the SL Keeps the v8 for its 63

Nah in this you'll rarely see the gas station.
This car looks 95% same as BMW’s Z4! The only difference is the grill.
I am ok with AMG‘s being 4 Cylinder as long as the V8‘s are also in every important model. Mercedes already has a great naming scheme, they could make the 43‘s only 4 Cylinders, 53‘s 6 cylinders and 63‘s only v8‘s and take that system to all the models
yeah but its not ok to pay 150k eur for a 4-cylinder car. Ridiculous.

@@jackmarston2515 BMW has been superior in M-car sales in compared to AMG. It's not even a contest. If you are 70-80 years old, a Merc is a great choice 😂. What AMG is doing lately, makes even me weep and I dont even like Mercedes. 4-pot hybrid C63?? The only good thing in the C63 used to be the engine and now that is gone, too. Sad.
Under the current MB strategy you won't be able to use spare parts from another car due to the computer codes needed for changing the most basic of parts, means these types of cars will become uneconomical to repair sometime in the future, probably the second or third owner will experience this.
the i-pad glued to the dash is horrendous. Tesla started it and now other car companies are joining.
The elephant in the room is you not being able to afford their new stuff and therefore wanna nitpick. Be honest. Because just a few minutes with that display let's you know mercedes did a good job with it. All the buttons you'd originally see are not on the screen and it works just as well.
@@peterhammer4644I'm glad no one's listening to you then cause it's a step in the right direction.

For me - a happy and proud R129 owner - this new SL … is not an SL any more in the sense of his famous and iconic ancestors !
To quote a friend, they should do one step better. Come up with a turbo/supercharged/hybrid 3 cylinder engine 😊

The engine is really impressive, and great for all the A class variants. Other then that NOPE. But they will feel it in the sales .. hopefully.

@@jackmarston2515 how much do you have to spend now to get a AMG V8 ? I have no problem with the 4 cylinder in the 35/45 models but putting it in a 63 model car is sacrilege. The new SL is built from the ground up by AMG, you don't buy an AMG and expect fuel efficiency.
To be more precise the issue here is excluding the V8 in staple AMG cars like the C63/E63.

They didn't switch. They just now make 4cyl too.
There is still a V8 model. Actually two V8s. The SL55 and SL63 both have a V8. This is just garbage. Nobody orders these as the price difference to a V8 is miniscule.

I’m no fan of this car but at 4.53 seconds to 60 you cannot describe it as slow
Late roman decadence.
The younger generation must be metrosexual soyboys because this is the opposite of the Twin Turbo AMG V12 SL65 Black Series.

Very very disappointing that Mercedes put a 4 cylinder in the SL! When did a SL have a 4 cylinder last? 190SL from the 1950's? No car with a 4 cylinder is luxury! They are devaluating the SL...
An AMG should have a V8!
The price is GREAT!
Great work
The Lexus takes some beating for the money, it’s stunning
