Shooting with extinct Polaroid ROLL FILM & a history of this bizarre film format [Instant Breakdown]

- In this episode we explore the history of Polaroid's original film type: roll film. Using carefully stored Polaroid Type 47 film from over 30 years ago, we were able to share the last breaths of a long-dead format!
Thank you to Wyckoff Windows for hosting (@wyckoffwindows) as well as Kyle Depew (@upsidewalkdown) of Brooklyn Film Camera (@brooklynfilmcamera), Scott Walker (@scott_r_walker), Erick, Fabi (remeny_art), Mitch, and Colby (@colbysadeghi) for being a part of the show!

When I was 14 ( a long time ago), my dad let me use his Polaroid camera. I bought several rolls of 3000 speed film and had a blast without worrying about enough light.
I never used that format, but remember the smell of the coater for pack B&W film!!! Loved it, You are a lucky man!!! Love the results!!!
That coater is iconic!! Thanks Brian 👃
Great vid! I haven't had any film for a week now so I'm living vicariously through your channel haha
I’m inspired to go out and shoot after each of your videos. Nice work!
You and the growing IAI team are most certainly on a roll!
(Familiar laugh warble.)
I love the science and engineering aspect of this topic. It is absolutely the gift that keeps on giving! Great episode!!
We are doing our best out here! Love all the people I've been able to bring into videos, they really bring a creative energy that means a lot!!
Ahh.. The roll film. The another format that i always clame 'must reproduce'. I know it is hard to reproduce, but why not! More complicated 600 film is revived, so more simple roll film..;)
Well they could definitely replicate it, better than pack film as it’s far less complicated.
I’d even be happy if they only did single photo rolls initially 🤷🏻♂️, or 4 photos rolls or whatever.
It’s basic enough that they can still make the chemistry and everything so why not.
Really cool video. Thank you.🙏
Hello! Thanks for the awesome video. Does the Polaroid 80a only work with the type 47 film or is there a newer version or option for it. If not, do you know a trusted store where I can buy it?
So cool that you found some that was still useable! My experience with the expired stuff was like the first shot- just brown goo on a white sheet!
Truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment! So thankful to Scott for letting us use his batch
Had that happen sometimes usually if its already brown on the sheet then the chemicals are dead but there are quite a few left out there still so happy hunting!
This is amazing. I've been wanting to get one of these old polaroid cameras for my collection.
They're super cheap since the format is dead, it's a must-have in a Polaroid collection IMO
AHH! Ben, out of all the types of videos you make here on in an instant, I honestly have to say I really enjoy the [instant breakdown]s the most, feel like we learn so much along the way. Oh, and I just got my first SLR camera. SLR680, the autofocus is broken, but the manual focus works until the cows come home 😎
Thank you Mike, have a great time with that 680 man, you're gonna have an absolute blast
The heist is on
Ahhhhhh That guy from Foo fighter? Funny Greek orthodox churches vibe!
Holy bazinga, that’s A LOT of film! Makes me wish I had a horde that big. Great video again my friend! 😁😁😁
Absolute bazinga energy, thank you Red!
This is still my favorite episode!!!
You are always wearing something fly! I was really digging the tshirt!
Thank you king!! Shoutout to Analog Talk for the T!!
Great video! At 3:20. It looks like a Polaroid 800. The dial near the lens controls the EV setting, right? At the lowest EV number what is the shutter speed and f/stop? And what about at the highest EV setting?
Omg I just realized this is THE Scott that I bought the same stash from 10 years ago! It was the same expire date, nuts that it still looks the same!
That’s so cool! Very few instant films last so long!
I just picked up a 800 Land Camera. I so want to get my hands in some of this film. It's my itch that I can't scratch and it's crazy
This was amazing! I've been collecting these old Polaroids for years and have never once been able to use one with the proper film! I have stuffed 600 film in them though, to varying results... Anyway It was like a dream come true to see the roll film in use! I must have read the instructions a million times and always wondered what it actually looked like. Thanks a million for this video!
Haha yeah those instructions are a TRIP!! So glad you enjoyed the video
i wanna know more about this 600 film being used 👀👀
@@forbiddendinos7231 basically I would stuff the 600 film in the camera In a dark closet then go expose it and bring it back to the dark closet to run it through the rollers of a spaghetti machine.
Love it!
Thanks for this! I have a 110. My dad and I shot a lot of Polaroids when I was a kid, but I couldn't remember how to load this particular one or even open it, and wanted to jog my memory. I don't have film for it; I'm just taking a trip down memory lane. I appreciate the info!
Love this vid. I’ve got a case of working Type 47 in my fridge and have been slowly shooting them.
Wow, def a rare joy to savor Ernie!
This was a BEAST of an episode! To find a cryogenically preserved ancestor to integral film and resurrect it for use in this bonkers of a good time was breath taking. Roll film will remain a faint memory or myth for many in the instant film world, but a select few were able to create with the founder of our instant film obsession. Thanks for bringing us along on the ride!
Jeremy!! Thanks so much for the kind words brother
I love the washed out look of these shots! Beautiful to behold.
THE TONEzZZ
Love the channel and the content. One question: can you ditch the strap with the title of the video at the bottom? ;)
I don’t think I ever will, except for specific videos. It’s part of the world of the channel, establishes where you are in the internets, my own little zone. It also brands each video by topic which I love
Dope photos you guys. While I'm not an avid collector, I am happy to say that I have several Polaroid cameras similar to what you were using. You've got me pumped now to want to pull them out and put them to work. But wait, 🤔🤔🤔ummm there's no film available😒😒😒, or is it? Please tell me if it's still possible to obtain this film...just for the hell of it. Thanks!
Haha unfortunately no real way to get the film other than risky eBay purchases. We were VERY lucky to be able to use Scott's film.
so this is how my polaroid j33 would have worked thanks for this.
this is cool af. had no idea about this history and i own one LOL (converted to lomograflok tho)
Lmao dude your results have been sick! Glad you enjoyed the history of it 🚀🚀🚀
the cool fact is that the first models of polaroid cameras, for example the model Polaroid Pathfinder 120 is compatible with 4x5 film, you can put the film inside the camera and use it!
That's so awesome, and I love all the mods folks have done since
I have a mint condition Polaroid 8x10" holder and processor. Does that have any collectors value? They are very heavy!
Hi, I came across this video perusing your back catalog. I hope you're still checking back on comments on videos from a year back. I'm wondering how many stops did you compensate for the age of the film. I have an opportunity to buy some Type 47 and 42 film. Thanks.
Hi there! I believe we metered at box speed or one stop over.
I absolutely love this video. It's nice to see there's some working 47 film still out there.
I did try shooting my minty mint Type 97a a few weeks ago with SX70 film. It was a struggle but it worked! Here's how I did it.
In complete darkness I slid out the top photo of a fresh SX70 cartridge and placed it into the 97a. This was rather difficult because darkness, but after feeling around for the edge of the 97a for the film plane I got it squared up.
I then shut the 97a up, went outside and took the photo. It was a little over exposed because the settings on the 97a are all pre-set and hard to measure.
Anyways after I took the photo I went back into the dark room and carefully took the film out and slid it into the SX70 cartridge, on top. It's hard to be careful here but once it's in, I then took the cartridge and placed it into my SLR680, fired a shot in the dark, covering the flash and lens. And bam, there was the developed 97a photo.
A pain in the butt, but worth it if your looking for that very soft edge and muted color retro photo. If I did this next time, I would pre-load a few cameras so I can then take all the photos and put then back into the cartridge for development. Give it a try, see what you get.
Wow that's super cool man, I definitely have to try that. I am super interested in the effects of shooting Polaroids in non-Polaroid cameras, from easier mods to more complicated hacks like what you did. Def a topic for a future video!
@@InAnInstant it's well worth it, and the 97a lens made a nice rendering on integral film. DM me if you want to see the result. Cheers!
Still have any of this film left? Would definitely like to buy a few packs if you do
Man, I can’t believe type 47 stopped being made only 10 years ago, that’s wild… (I’m 34 years old GIMME A BREAK)
😂😂😂😂😂
Is the in an instant discord still up?? id love to join but cant find a link???
Yes it is! discord.gg/FqeQtdDX
@In An Instant Thank you!!
I have a Polaroid highlander model 80a that uses series 30 roll film
Clearly they don’t exist anymore, the film that it takes stopped in the 60s? and the expired stuff seems to never work
Very disappointing. My camera just sits on a shelf. I really wish they’d bring back the film. :(
I read about this legendary film in Instant, by Bonanos, but it's a whole different thing to see it in action!
hey man im right now getting all the chemistry to produce a fresh batch of roll film film do you mind in a few months i send you fresh roll film it will be a prototype is that ok with you
That sounds absolutely unbelievable! Please do!
Edwin Land was a pure genius , so many patents , still a record I believe. I would like someone to come up with an adaptor to run Instax Mini in a Polaroid Vision / Captiva camera - I shot hundreds of 500 films in my Vision and loved it . There are many issues though as Fuji film has higher 800 rating , develops from the reverse side ,it's smaller than 500 film etc. I've seen people manage to tape one Instax film onto an old 500 film and get it through the camera but never seen the results to see if the film develops. To put a whole 10 film pack of Mini in and run it out would be great .....I'm a dreamer I guess :))
I wish someone would make an adapter for the Captiva - issue is it would be a complicated conversion since the camera is powered by the battery in the film. Makes that a whole ordeal on some of the old 500 cameras
@@InAnInstant It is an issue but I did manage to power a Captiva from an external battery pack so that solved one issue . The transport of the film was a real issue without a proper adapter, the little pusher than pushes each film into the motorised rollers has to line up exactly to avoid disaster - I'm a dreamer I guess :)))
LOOOOOK AT THAT T-SHIRT!!!!!!
King you know I represent!! ❤️❤️❤️
Let it COOK 🔥
LOOKING FOR SOME FRESH MEAT
Very cool video, but you inserting new film to the camera? I died with your friend Scott a couple of times at least
Hey you try it 😂😂
No no, my hand would be so shaky I'd probably drop it 😅
Long live analogue
It'd be great to have deep pockets. Just to revive films like this.
I hear that brother, I think about that with everything I love that has vanished 😂
why does scott look like dave grohl
Is it just me or does Scott look an awful lot like a younger and chubbier Dave Grohl? (Foo Fighters singer)
I called him Dave Grohl Jesus all day 😂😂
Like for that random Halo theme lmao
How has it not dried out yet
Dave???
Okay but why does Scott look like Dave Grohls doppelgänger
Infinitely troubling tbh
Polaroid forever!
Halo ftw
"If you were but a fool..." Well, i am that fool and have ruined an entire working roll of this film 🫠
