- On this episode we get the incredibly rare opportunity to shoot with Kodak Instant Film, a product that has not been produced for 35 years and been considered completely defunct. This stunning working pack of film was acquired by a deceased Kodak employee who had been cold storing it, and then sent to us by Mike Thibault who discovered it was function and donated the final shots to the show. I shot a pack of this I bought on eBay in like 2018 and got a single, full-spread image in the middle of the pack, with barely any color shift. I also used “the handle”. Was shocked but excited. I was struck at how similar the size is to Spectra film (just with slightly rounded edges and a matte finish on the plastic laminate over the image) - if I remember correctly, this Kodak film predated spectra by a couple years.
I have run probably 15ish packs through my camera and that single frame is, I’m sure, all I’ll ever get to shoot of the stuff. Was really cool - like a warmer, better, instax wide. I remember thinking “I see why Polaroid sued”.

My mom had a Kodak Partytime instant camera, when she heard of the lawsuit, she bought a ton of film, so were still using it until around 1990
Loved this! I got The Handle in 1977. Loved it so much that I got tired of buying flip flashes from the drugstore all the time. I bought a battery powered flash that worked with it. I thought I was something else!

I was inspired by your video to try out these cameras and film. Got one somewhat visible image from the third pack I tried after hearing up the sealed pack with a hair dryer, thinking that the dried ink would soften. When I peeled apart the previous blank images, I could see how congealed the ink had become from age. Fun experiment and thankfully not too pricey to try. The old cameras are plentiful and cheap (many in like-new condition). The film is not so cheap. I bought a Handle and a 930 Kodamatic folding camera. The latter is pretty cool, made in Germany and a hefty camera for what it is.
True, the cameras being paperweights for over 30 years has brought their prices down considerably, that sounds like an awesome experiment Dean!
OH WOW, this is just incredible. And I actually love the Trimprint feature. It really seems like a great product and I am sorry for it to end. Like the technology behind it maybe really was better or more interesting than the original Polaroid stuff?

I have this camera I remember when I first got it and taking pictures with it I still have it, when I got it the only thing that I didn't like was it was hard to get film for it and then I couldn't get any at all so I wrapped it up and put it away. I can remember so good times with that camera. If they still had film for it now I'd be using it thanks so much and much success!
I have several vintage photos made on Kodak Instant, can we just talk about HOW much better the matte/pebbled surface is? Goodbye newton rings! I don't understand why polaroid couldn't have knocked off the knockoff (although obviously, newton rings are a more modern problem) the seamless border is also just really nice.
Most of these cameras found today will be missing the aluminum faceplate strip on the front which had the Kodak name, logo and camera name on it. The reason for this is that Kodak required you to peel this plate off the camera to send in for a rebate towards other Kodak cameras. Great video!
Thanks for this video - I actually just found a Trimprint 920 and a SEALED pack of PR144-10 film in a thrift store today! I'm sure I won't have much luck but I'm hopeful based on your results that I might get *something* out of it.

I also have old Kodak "Handle" "Pleaser" and "Champ" cameras with some old film packs still inside. I shot a few pictures but, unfortunately, they came out completely black. I was able to shoot Fuji Instax film in one of them by loading a single piece of film into the camera in a darkroom, exposing it in the Kodak camera, then putting it back into a Fuji camera to eject for development. Worked, but a lot of work for a single shot.
I always thought the Pleaser was the most unsettling name of the batch 😂 - I wish it wasn’t such a pain in the buns to shoot Instax in them!

I loved my Handle instant camera. The color in the instant photos has held up very well over the years. The film was expensive at the time ($1 per photo). Kodak asked us to send back our Handle cameras for a small rebate after the lawsuit concluded.

I have a few childhood photos on this film, and remember playing with the useless husk of a camera as a child after they killed the film. The only right thing in this world to do is for KODAK TO RESURRECT PACK FILM.

We just stumbled across a bunch of Kodak instant photos! I had no idea they even made the stuff! I only knew of Polaroid, and even the Polaroid film I bought back in the 90s, NEW, was terrible quality compared to any of the Kodak instant photos I just went through! HOW DID THIS NOT BEAT POLAROID?!?! The quality of the photos is so much better than any Polaroid I've ever laid eyes on!!
How did this not beat Polaroid? Look at the camera, that's why! It's huge and heavy and just absurdly awkward. Nobody's breaking this thing out at a party or taking it to the zoo or on vacation.
I actually had one of these as a kid (wish I could find some of the pictures I took!), it was a birthday present one year. I liked not having to wait for the film to be developed like we had to with my mom's DISC camera and grandma's 110. (I have a soft spot for 110s to this day.)
@@BigOldCarChannel Polaroids were big and awkward too. Had they stuck with the tech, the camera would've progressively gotten smaller. Hell, the Polaroid we had folded up was the size of 2 VHS cassettes, and weighed a couple pounds. When it was opened the bloody thing was the size of a cinder block! Either way, this is a fast superior product in my opinion. Polaroid has never been worth the hideous amounts they charged for film here in Canada. Personally I'll stick to the 35mm.
@@ShadowNuke The box cameras were small and light. The folding ones you mention weren't too bad either. I have one of each: an original SX-70 One-Step from 1977 and a One600 from 2004 that collapses flat. They're both small and light enough to wear on a strap around your neck. This Kodak camera? Forget it, it's a cinder block!

Photokina 1978, first I arrived ar the Kodak booth. I received an instant picture of me and it’s the only Kodak instant picture I have. Next I went to the Polaroid booth where you were allowed to take a picture with the SX-70 sonar. That picture is still in my collection. When I came home I went buying a Polaroid SX-70 with some of the accessoires. I took it the next year on my holiday to Sicily.

I just found this camera with two packs of film unopened not sure what I want to do with it. Considering the rarity of the film. I just about gasped and remembered this video.
I bought 5 packs of this at an estate sale as well from a Professional Photographer who was a massive Kodak collector (entire house full of Kodak swag and cameras) - I have kept it in the fridge since I got it and now I'm wondering if I should crack open a pack to see if it works. Thanks!

Got a Kodak Colorburst Instant camera (100 model, I believe) stuck in a storage box around here somewhere. Had a Polaroid at the same time (it's sitting on a shelf) and I preferred the brightness of the Kodak film over the Polaroid film of the time. Now although I have vintage Polaroids I shoot InStax film in all three formats when shooting analog for the same reason, I like the clearness and brightness of the Fujifilm over the new Polaroid. Seen a couple of homebrewed adaptors to shoot other brand instant film in the old Kodak cameras, but no one seems to be able to create a reliable one yet.
How would you compare your old Kodak shots to the look of modern Instax?
@@InAnInstant Maybe the old Kodaks are a little darker. Would have to go dig around to find them for a proper comparison. IT might have also been the sightly larger rectangular format of the Colorburst to the square format of the SX-70 my dad had.
I have some lovely pictures my Grandparents took on Kodak instant. I actually preferred the colours to Polaroid.
What fantastic film. There are some efforts to shoot Instax film in these cameras It works surprisingly well.
Fuji purchased (or reverse engineered) the technology developed by Kodak for their instant film - it is fundamentally the same process wise
With Instax being similar film construction due to what I was saying about the product’s development, it can work in these cameras, but boy is it a pain in the ass/not worth it 😂😂
Oh my gosh yes! I found an old photo once and I wasn't sure if it was an instant photo or not, because it had that iconic instant photo look, but the material felt more like carboard, and, like you said, there was no ridge between the frame and the photo. This confirmed that it really was a photo taken by my grandma's Colorburst 100! It felt sooo cool to hold, I just wish I could take photos with that film.
When I saw this video, I was thinking you might have found some expired film that works and there might be a possibility I could find some too, but I guess still not :(

Were there any issues finding a battery for this? Price on one of these cameras in the thrift store today and noticed it had a strange very flat battery compartment. I kind of like the idea of putting a handle on the camera. I kind of wish my Instax Mini 11 had a handle. I find little awkward to hold compared to the Polaroid cameras.

I say that as well because believe it or not, you actually have a clone copycat user, who I will remain unnamed, that does an abysmal job at taking a stab at your style. His videos almost seem like dirty competition to yours, his thumbnails are cringe worthy and click baity, and most of the time he doesn't know what he's even talking about. I'm glad that he still can't compare to your quality, because Ben, you are our GO to Polaroid guy on UA-cam.

There is a reason the Kodak instant camera and its film were around for only a couple of years. In the early 1980s, Polaroid was on a roll, and its retail film sales were exceeding its production capacity. So, Polaroid contracted with Kodak to produce instant film Polaroid. That require giving Kodak access to a variety of Polaroid's intellectual property, production methods, etc. Being Kodak, it immediately hit on the idea of using that knowledge to make its own instant camera and film. Polaroid responded by suing Kodak for patent violations and the gold in the teeth of Kodak's board members. In short, Polaroid won its lawsuit. Kodak was ordered to pay to Polaroid all the profits it got from its sales of instant cameras and film, and it was enjoined immediately from selling such cameras and film. This left Kodak camera users high and dry, as the Kodak cameras could not shoot Polaroid film packs. To avoid further litigation from customers, Kodak was forced to run a buy-back program, thereby settling customer claims. Overall, it cost Kodak so much that even the largest photo film and chemical seller in the world had to stop and take a few deep financial breathes.
Incredible that this film work after 35 years....so kodak made superior film ( than polaroid) like instax....and now we know why....they share the same Technologies....

I have 2 packs of another Kodak instant film . I shot only the first one but nothing came out, so I decided not to use the 2nd one and to keep it for collection , they are both expired in 1985. But _i had more luck with a Kodak disc instead ..

None really, to be honest!
it seems that the kodak instant film format is the same as fujifilm fotorama series. the fuji FI-10 film has a 160 iso and I believe that it could be used in early kodak instant cameras. fuji discontinued fi-10 in about 2005. So I think it's easier to find working packs than kodak pr-10 film (Though fujifilm only sold fotorama cameras and film in Japan, lol)
and fi-10 was followed by fi-800 and ACE films, they share the same format and only differs in ISO, the last ACE film expired in 2011 or early 2012

At that time when both Polaroid and Kodak were in competition for the instant market I got much better results from my Kodak than from my Polaroid. Just as Fuji Instax yields better results than today's Polaroid (Impossible Project). IMHO.

We have "shake it like a Polaroid" which you're not supposed to do. But Kodak could've had "crank it like a Kodak" which was exactly how it was designed.

I was just thinking two things today.. ONE: I wonder if Kodak still has their recipe for their integral film? My wife’s family used it when she was growing up and the colors are just spectacular and warm and Kodaky compared to Fuji Instax…. TWO: Since it’s the same backside process why hasn’t Instax made a matte finish Instax? Want want want.
When i was 8 my dad bought me a new in box kodak instant camera, i still have it and would love to try and get some results however i know its highly impratical, and the special duracell battery is kaputt so thats out, however i recently bought a nikon F3 35mm camera with a polaroid pack film adapter and would love to try that with some fuji pack film, however the image produced is 1/1 3/2 and only takes up a very small area on it so itd be a waste, i have a pack film camera, but the battery is dead, are there replacments or am I screwed with that to 😆 if not im fine with my sun 600 and my SX-70s😂 😂😂

Unfortunately no. You could load single sheets of Fuji film in there just to try it once, but that’s really a tough task. Cool collector’s item though!
The photo looks suspiciously like Instax Wide. Would it be a (slight) possibility to somehow use Instax Wide in this camera?
Hey Kriss! I discuss this in the video. As for whether you can shoot Instax square/mini in Kodak cameras, you can because of how the product was similarly developed, but it will not fit into the cartridges traditionally and requires a lot of finicky work to do.
What kind of film roll is it?
I am still hoping to get my Kodak working with Instax film somehow through mods, but i lack the skill for that.
Wonder if you can get a video for the Vision SLR Captiva format done.
Looking into the latter btw, biggest obstacle is a lack of functioning batteries/film. The format and camera itself don’t have enough of a narrative on their own for a historical video, so I need to shoot some of it.
@@InAnInstant Well, it is kind of the last Polaroid SLR and the picture Format itself has some Instax vibe to me. But i totally get it, we need more Kodak employees with these films well stored. I have purchased myself such a Captiva, maybe i will find the time and still to mod it for using it with Polaroid Go or Instax Mini.

A Kodamatic 940 was seen at/near the end of "The Terminator" (1984).ua-cam.com/video/5X_nnGuOdKA/v-deo.html Polaroid made sure that Kodak Instant Film was terminated before they "disappeared like an Oldsmobile." The Ghost of Rochester isn't dead yet, but getting swept away by the Digital Photography Tsunami was Hubris. 4:44 I see a GAF/Anscochrome image of the 1960's.

I bought an EK-4 (IIRC), the upright camera that still needed hand cranking to eject, at a yard sale in around 1979. I shot one pack of film, and I'm pretty sure your date for discontinuation was wrong, because I remember the Polaroid/Kodak lawsuit settling with Kodak pulling the film (and sending me a $10 check when I registered for the settlement -- which was harder in those pre-Internet days) before I got a chance to buy a second pack (though that might indeed have been much more than a year on a broke college student's budget).
I keep thinking of these cameras and wondering if there could be a way to adapt Instax (Square or Wide) to work in one of these. It exposes through the back of the print (and in fact appears to be an operational copy of the Kodak Instant film, only *even faster* at ISO 800) -- perhaps by cutting a new ejector notch and shimming the pack well in the camera? You'd need a neutral density, but unlike SX-70 with 600 speed film, that could go over the lens, since there were no SLR versions of this Kodak camera. The cameras still occasionally turn up at yard sales or thrift stores -- and I recall the lenses being *at least* as good as those on the Fuji-built Instax cameras...
FWIW, IMO, the outcome of the lawsuit was a travesty. The film owed virtually nothing to Polaroid's patented technology and IMO all of that was "prior art" based on already expired peel-apart patents -- the light block layer in what became the front of the print wasn't spread from the pod along with the developing chemicals, the method of producing a direct positive was different, and as proven by Trimprint, the dye migration was different; this an entirely new, separately patentable product and process (and worth noting that Kodak never even sent a "cease and desist" letter to Fuji with their nearly identical technology). The lawsuit was bullying, pure and simple, abetted by a technically ignorant court.
Kodak worked WITH Fuji on their film, hence the similarities. And you can check the legal discontinuation of Kodak film (I do my research lol) but at any rate, I agree the consumer took a huge loss on the whole controversy! We all would have been much better off if both companies continued producing their respective instant films. It’s a damn shame, but like I say in the video Kodak probably would have ultimately discontinued it anyway.
@@InAnInstant Maybe it was just a low demand item in a college town in north Idaho -- I do remember seeing it on hooks at the drug store and on the shelf at the local camera store for a while after I bought the camera, but I'd have sworn it wasn't available (there) for seven more years.
And yes, Kodak would have dumped it eventually -- heck, they dumped Kodachrome, even Ektachrome (though they did bring back one flavor of Ektachrome, at least), Verichrome Pan (at one point, the most popular black and white film in history), Plus-X -- "Say, let's simultaneously botch the transition to digital, *and* shoot ourselves in the collective foot with film..." Is George Eastman buried in Oklahoma? It would explain their geologically unexplained earthquakes the past couple decades...

Dear Polaroid,
I just had a shoot at a friend's birthday party with my polaroid now +. It was amazing. A lot of us have avoided being in pics at parties because of the fear that someone posts one on social media of you doing something memorable but perhaps compromising. So pitching polaroid as the camera that protects your privacy because there are not digital copies of the pic, so only eyes of your choosing get to see them. In sort, Polaroid = For those Private Moments you'd like to remember.

Taking a Kodak just doesn't have the same feel to it as taking a Polaroid but I do think Kodak out Polaroided Polaroid.
