I would love a tour of your workshop! Doesn't have to be a long video. Maybe some others would like to see your setup. I myself have recently moved and I'm starting to set up my own work shop so I would love to get some tips.
I really like the work you put into repairing this small piece of history, the trick of replacing the rubber gasket worked much better than I would have expected. The only problem I can see is with the ammunition shown which is 30 caliber carbine (used in M1 Carbine rifles) not the linked 30 caliber 4 AP to 1 Tracer listed on the side (30.06 caliber)
Holy shit dude. You take restoration to a new level. I probably would have just de-rusted the box then painted it some sort of green and called it quits. Bravo!
Wow it would take a real gunsmith, someone who knows the restoration well. Because slight change in the rifling or anything in the barrel could affect its performance
It's realistic. I have never seen one perfectly stamped or straight. It's a disposable product for the US military, you know? They cranked em out like crazy.
Guys, I get it. I was military as well. However, I never saw one with paint like that either. If you are making the perfect version I thought he might like it straight. Restored to look original with it crooked makes sense though
I have so many of these ammo type cans. Lots of them filled as well. And some of them could use a going over as well. But when I see the meager cost of buying really nice used ones, I have a hard time justifying the efforts needed to make them look great, like you did. But one day I will because...well...I can... Thumbs Up!
To smooth out the gasket with less spread out to clean up, use an empty toilet paper core. The round shape provides a nice smooth surface and most of the excess collects in the center of the cardboard tube leaving much less to wipe up. This works on almost any caulk/silicone jobs
Nicely done. If you want a better looking result with silicone you can use a small wooden spatula dipped in soapy water. Silicone doesn't stick to wet things, so it's easier to work with then. The soap in the water makes the spatula slide over the silicone easily and helps getting a pretty result. I know it doesn't matter for a gasket you won't hardly ever see and I think you did very well. Cheers. :-)
Just to remind anyone thinking of doing this to their ammo can- the paint can be obtained online from Midwest Military- semi-gloss olive drab # TM9-03. Do a search on "research on paint colors done by paul vien" for the details on WWII ammo box paint. The color on the finished can in the video is too light and not semi-gloss, and not the proper color for these WWII boxes. The restoration work in the video is impressive, but the paint is incorrect. If any of you are going to tackle restoring these things, please get the paint right.
If you want surface rust to wipe off try a little Iron Out, unless it removes powdercoat paint? Which I'd question is there a powdercoat on those ammo cans and is there a liquid remover for that paint?
Hi! Great job, but this box is supposed to contain a 250-round belt of .30-06 Spr Armor Piercing M1 ammo, not a boxed .30 Carbine M1 ammo. The same is said in the decals you applied on the box. Sorry for my English =)
that is what the applied stencils says, but the embossing say it was a transit case for .30 carbine ammo, and there were no belted .30 carbine weapons in US army service, maybe the same can could have been used to carry belted .30-06, but that would have been done in the field or at an army depot, the latter could maybe explain the stencil if depots did such things a repurposing empty ammo cans
The container is an M1 Ammunition Box for belted .30 Caliber (.30/'06 Springfield) ammo. It was used to hold 250-round woven cloth belts of Machinegun ammo. It was replaced by the improved M1A1 Ammo Box later in the war. This was replaced by the M19 ammo box (.30 Caliber [.30-'06 Springfield]), which was replaced by the redesigned M19A1 ammo Box (7.62mm NATO) in the mid-1950s.
You may not have a ton of videos (yet), but I still love watching these restorations, which is why I've subscribed here in the beginning :) Looking forward to more excellent restorations.
Nice restore project! I wasn't too interested in viewing as I was just UA-cam surfing. But I did and loved it! Will be looking at more of your vids! Great job! Thanks!
you can make a gasket easier. Take a plasticfoil and spray it with soapy water and lay it on the edges and close the ammo box.The silicone will not stick on the soapy plastic and the edges will print in perfectly
During the active war years, my brother used to get me empty cans all the time. You can never have enough. Hope you have a sweet carbine for that ammo.
Good stuff. Funny tho, here in the US we can have the can and the live ammo, but the Demil'd cans are suppose to have the yellow markings removed / painted over.
This is an exceptionally well done restoration. The only thing that looks off to me other then the silicone is the paint job. All the US WW2 ammo boxes I've ever seen are painted an almost glossy Olive Drab finish, while yours is painted more of a matte Khaki Drab. Overall I love your work though, especially what you've done on the BMW. Cant wait to see more!
Nice restore. To me the lettering would be the toughest part. Too bad you were slightly off keeping it straight and centered but I’m betting when they made it originally, they just quickly slapped a stencil on there and blasted it with yellow paint. Keep up the good work.
You have excellent skills. I am especially impressed by the painting set-up. I could imagine you could make very authentic film props by reclaiming old objects... Just a thought... All the best.
Very nice...but if your doing a nomenclature on the side of the Carbine ammo box your using the wrong stencil....looks like your stencil is for the belted 30 Caliber machine gun...Carbine ammo was usually on stripper clips or boxes not belted but very nice work
Interesting for techniques. How much did this cost? I hope UTUB helps offset that. Basically these items are designed for storage, use, disposal. The fact that they are repurposed is due to remarkable engineering design. I restored one of these recently. Sanded with a drill attachment, a half can of krylon and voile a small tool box. Great vid.
Nice restoration, though the stencil text seems an odd choice, being that it was clearly supposed to be a repacked lot of belted .30-06 for the M1919 machine gun. Though I doubt that would have fitted what the stencil says it would have, either.
I'm absolutely amazed by this work. Restoration demands so much attention to little details.
Love how simple these videos are, no bs music but just basics!
YES - the lack of stupid music is such a relief. I like the authentic work sounds.
I would love a tour of your workshop! Doesn't have to be a long video. Maybe some others would like to see your setup. I myself have recently moved and I'm starting to set up my own work shop so I would love to get some tips.
I like that yellow.
u great too but u must better paint like this
Yes. Ive watched almost all of your videos and the one thing you are missing is better color choices/painting
I really like the work you put into repairing this small piece of history, the trick of replacing the rubber gasket worked much better than I would have expected. Get yourself an Xacto knife, would have been perfect to remove the small stencil pieces between letters, and is useful for many operations
And perhaps some tweezers for electronics, those are sharp and precise. Don't get the ESD safe ones though, it's unnecessary for your application.
Great job - I really wish that you had masked the inside of the lid before adding the silicone, that would have peeled away with nice clean lines.
Silicone looks sloppy.
@@ultimaetsolder You're an expert on sloppiness, no doubt.
Of all the restoration videos this is the first one presenting something I myself have restored.
Manchmal frag ich mich wo man so tolle sachen zum restaurieren bekommt finde sowas aufjeden fall nice mach weiter so
Holy shit dude. You take restoration to a new level. I probably would have just de-rusted the box then painted it some sort of green and called it quits. Bravo!
Great restoration and the detail was great. The lettering was so meticulous. Didn't know that army green could look so good!
I'd like to see some gun restoration
Abdo Ghany yes
Wow it would take a real gunsmith, someone who knows the restoration well. Because slight change in the rifling or anything in the barrel could affect its performance
Neat video. After seeing your restoration I think I’m going to leave mine alone. I simply like the patina and the rust is minimal.
My heart sunk when I saw that the stencil was crooked. You worked so hard to only have that happen in the end
I've never seen a straight text EVER on any of the ammo cans I've opened in the last 20 years. USMC
Oorah! From my friend.
It's realistic. I have never seen one perfectly stamped or straight. It's a disposable product for the US military, you know? They cranked em out like crazy.

Blueblob thanks for the tip I'm sure I'll come in handy

Very cool. Was a little worried that a beautiful ammo box would have no ammo. Good to see you kept true to the build.
Hooray for the sponsorship!! The stencil pealing almost gave me an aneurysm.
ocd and overkill springs to mind.
nice job and well done with the sponsership.
Reminds me of the day's where I'd have to empty the contents of .50 Cal ammo with a M2 Browning .50 Cal. Love those ammo cans!
If you want surface rust to wipe off try a little Iron Out, unless it removes powdercoat paint? Which I'd question is there a powdercoat on those ammo cans and is there a liquid remover for that paint?
Your attention to detail is awesome.
Neat! I love WW II memorabilia and the M1 carbine. It's one of my favorite all time rifles!
Hi!
Great job, but this box is supposed to contain a 250-round belt of .30-06 Spr Armor Piercing M1 ammo, not a boxed .30 Carbine M1 ammo. The same is said in the decals you applied on the box.
Sorry for my English =)
30 cal is quite hard to get hold of in the UK - 30 cal belts would be near impossible
This is what that can was for. Belted means they go in a belt for the 30 cal Browning. users.skynet.be/jeeper/ammocans1.jpg
And the 4. A.P.- 1 TR is 4 Rounds armor piercing, Then 1 Round tracer then repeat
Your english was perfect and your points are valid. He just cant get the correct ammunition because he lives in a Freedom-Lite country.

Beautiful! Love the choice of yellow for the lettering.
I am in heaven, Restoreit video, Peter White 'Venice beach' jazz music in the back ground, chocolate and red wine

Great restore! So glad the yellow lettering had the centres to peel after the main peel off section. I would of lost sleep because of that 😂
Nice restore project! I wasn't too interested in viewing as I was just UA-cam surfing. But I did and loved it! Will be looking at more of your vids! Great job! Thanks!
Best restoration channel on UA-cam. Keep up the great work man
I could literally spend my entire weekend doing this kind of stuff.
Restore It Wife wanted a hot tub so no room for a shed
you can make a gasket easier. Take a plasticfoil and spray it with soapy water and lay it on the edges and close the ammo box.The silicone will not stick on the soapy plastic and the edges will print in perfectly
Great job! I did a restoration on a WCC Ammo Box as well.. your video is one of my main reference..thanks for sharing
Nice work !
Just bought that ammobox yesterday. Its so rusty. Now ive got to do what you did. Wish me luck😅😂
During the active war years, my brother used to get me empty cans all the time. You can never have enough. Hope you have a sweet carbine for that ammo.
Randy Magnum It's inert ammo. I doubt he has an M1 carbine in England. :/
mannys9130 damn your right. Well come on over and you can sling some lead downrange with us.
Randy Magnum I live here in Arizona. I sling hundreds of pounds of lead a year. :D The OP is in England IIRC.
mannys9130 well you are both welcome
Good stuff.
Funny tho, here in the US we can have the can and the live ammo, but the Demil'd cans are suppose to have the yellow markings removed / painted over.
Awesome, love those New old stock .30 cal in cartons
Great video. Nice starter project. Thanks
Great workshop, i would love a space like that!
It's a friend garage really. I'm looking to save up and get my own workshop as soon as possible :)

I have a old craftsman’s toolbox that I want restored.
Also I really love your channel it’s so satisfying to see the end result.
great job my friend well done. congratulations from Greece.
This restoration is awesome, cool thing is the end where you show the cal.30 ammo!
Thank you for all the wonderful video's. You truly have God gifted hands.
Now this is very nicely done.
Amazing work! And i love the colour combination you chose 👍🏻
Kewl job on that Ammo box looks just like the one's we had in the Army(Cheers)✨🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺✨✌
Stopped What I was doing to watch this video, Don't Regret it at all. keep up the great work man.
Awesome restoration
Sure did a great job on that ammo can. If my gaskets ever fail on my WWII ammo cans, I'll know how to fix 'em. Crack on mate.
Thanks Rusty!
You have excellent skills. I am especially impressed by the painting set-up. I could imagine you could make very authentic film props by reclaiming old objects... Just a thought... All the best.
Awesome work man! Good as new.
Good tip to the part when you're making the gasket. Dip your finger in soapy water so it will give a lot cleaner finish
Awesome job! Great video! Thanks for sharing!
I love your videos! Keep them coming.
The only thing I'm missing is the side by side before/after comparison in the end.
Great work! Except here in the US we can actually pack that box full of real ammo. Keep up the great work.
Cheers
Congrats on getting sponsored!
Awesome cleaning
Awe...I was hoping for a shiny box 📦 lol 😂 but it’s ok I love your work 💖
Extremely satisfying
Thank you!
Another great restoration, awesome job mate.
Great News On Sponsor May Many More Follow Suite.
wow... tons of work, nice job
Good job on that. I love the added touch of the real ammo!
Well, real, but not live haha. Just bullets seated into polished up and resized spent casings most likely with no powder.
Good work 👍👍👍👍
Edwin Sarkissian love your vids
Nice work! A lot fewer parts than usual :)
I have a old ammo box too! But I sprayed painted " GEN jack " on its side
A good restoration job, and a good project to pick.
Fantástico,maravilloso trabajo,desde Barcelona.
little tip: if you are spreading silicone with your fingers, keep them wet. the silicone will have a cleaner finish
Nice, thank you!
loving your work by the way. excellent detailing and no nonsense videos. perfect for relaxing to
Very good work
Very nice...but if your doing a nomenclature on the side of the Carbine ammo box your using the wrong stencil....looks like your stencil is for the belted 30 Caliber machine gun...Carbine ammo was usually on stripper clips or boxes not belted but very nice work
You have guts to peel off so fast :-D Nice video as always.
Great job!!
Other than using the wrong label, it’s a nice restoration
Another bad day turned good thanks to the smiley face tattoo.
your work is amazing. I wish I could work like that.
Dude i love the attention you give to the details...love ur videos bro
Absolutely gorgeous. Another great video as usual.
Thank you! Your channel is my favorite.
Would you ever consider getting a laser rust removal machine if it was cheap or do you enjoy the work that you put into removing all the rust?
that would make a epic lunch box. now bout a German ammo crate next :) that would be my lunch box lol
I never saw that trick with the silicone gasket before. Thanks-
Muy buenos tus trabajos, saludos desde Argentina
Restored it to better quality that original.
Looks great!
Interesting for techniques. How much did this cost? I hope UTUB helps offset that. Basically these items are designed for storage, use, disposal. Great vid.
Nice work.
Superbe restauration; j'adore.
I HAVE AN IDEA! You should restore the guns that go with the ammo box.
The ammo box goes with a .30-caliber belt-fed machinegun. There's little chance of that.
Nice restoration, though the stencil text seems an odd choice, being that it was clearly supposed to be a repacked lot of belted .30-06 for the M1919 machine gun. Though I doubt that would have fitted what the stencil says it would have, either.
Celebmacil The can was made for M1 carbine ball ammo, .30 carbine as shown in the boxes. The stencil is mismatched, as it describes belted .30-06.
Nice job. Thx!
Your just like me I have a body shop I use two part mix for any project I do and I order stencils awesome man
Seems like more than 250 rounds in that ammo box. But it looks amazing
The stencil you chose wouldn’t be on a carbine ammo can. Belted 4 AP 1 TR is for belted MG ammo. Nice work though!
